MARCH 2011 NEWSLETTER

Each month there will be a “Maniac poll”. This poll will be posted online. Pleasetake a few moments to answer this poll. I will post the results in the nextnewsletter.

This month’s question: Have you ever run an ultra marathon?

Please vote online between now and May 5: http://www.marathonfreak.com/maniacpoll

Last month’s question: Assuming that you have to wear aManiac shirt/singlet, which is your favorite?

The “signature” yellow singlet is still the most popularshirt/singlet among Maniacs. Of the 91 votes 51% wouldwear the signature yellow singlet. The black and whitesinglet, flashy singlet, red shirt and pink Divas shirt all camein second with 8%. Thanks for voting!

MARCH 2011 NEWSLETTER

Here are some possible topics for your short story:• How did you get into running? • What was your life like before running and how has it changed? • What inspired you to become a Maniac? • Have you lost a lot of weight because of running?• What groups or friends have inspired you the most?• What words of thanks would you like to say to the Maniacs?• How have you inspired others through your running?

This is a call out to ALL MANIACS, I want to hear your story!! I know many of you have a great story to tell. Many of youhave great stories of incredible weight loss and many of you have changed lives since you started running. I know some ofyour stories, but I’m sure everyone would like to hear them too. Don’t be shy to tell the story, it will encourage us all andgive us all a little motivation.

Here is what I want you to do, take a few minutes and write out your story, it can be on one main topic or point, or it canbe a summary of how your life has changed! It can also be just words of encouragement or a thank you to the Maniacs asa whole. All I ask is that you keep your story to 500 words or less, basically what I want is a short and simple story of howyour life is different then it was before running!

If you want to share a photo along with your story you can e-mail it to me ([email protected]).

I have set up a very simple form that will only take seconds to fill out. Click on the following link to share your story!

http://marathonfreak.com/mm/mystory.htm

I started running in 1989 on Block Island. I babysat for a family who spent several wks a year there, and the parents were runners. They were in their late 30's/early 40's and could outrun me -a 20 yr old (I'd put on those lovely freshman 15 in college). I quicklygot in good running shape. Kept it up til I got married and had kids. Stayed in shape by walking for the next 10 yrs. In Dec. 2009 afriend asked me to run a 5K w/ her(that was my 1st race). Ran another 5K, a 12K, and decided I wanted to run a marathon. I hadalways been a lone runner, but have found it much more fun to run w/ others...thus have taken to these races! Started chatting w/another runner on my 2nd marathon (the Tri-Cities Marathon), and she was a Maniac. She encouraged me to run the SeattleMarathon and join the Maniacs. So I did, and I'm very happy to be part of this awesome group of runners!

Marathon Dietby David Spooner (#446)

I started running to lose weight. I was up to xxxl shirts and they started getting tight so I went on a lowcarb diet. I started loosing weight so I decided to start running to help speed thing along. I went to thetrack to run a mile, I think I almost died. I started increasing my mileage little by little. I could see runningwas changing my body. I read a story about the Seattle marathon and decided to run it. People would sayI couldn't run that far so that’s all I needed for inspiration. At mile 18 I felt awful, gutted it out and toldmyself I would never do that again. I changed my mind the next day. I started eating some carbs againand that helped. My next mission was to get to Boston and people told me I was too big to run fastenough. It took me 16 marathons and I made it. I would see Marathon Maniacs at the races and looked atthe web site. I didn't know if I could make it in. I ran 6 in 6 weeks to get in. I have made allot of friendsfrom running. My goals are to Make it to the 100 marathon club(almost there), The 50 state club and runBoston every year, And of course loose some more weight. My starting weight was 328lbs. Now I am at208lbs. That’s why I go by marathon Diet. I want to get below 200.

MARCH 2011 NEWSLETTER

I started running because of my fast and stressful life, took on the big challenge of the marathon as my firstrace ever, having never ran over 8 miles before that I had only 3 weeks of training and half the fourth toachieve those 26.2 at the Los Angeles Marathon 05/25/2009.

After my second marathon Las Vegas on Dec 06, 2010 on my way back to Los Angeles had a car accident(Dec 7, 2009) that left me with 7 fractured bones in my spinal cord from L1 to L5; L1 and L3 left and right, kept me from running for 4 months, God knows how many times I tried to run before that only to stop aftera mile because of the excruciating pain. My doctor recommended acupuncture to help me ease the backpain and as of today I have not needed it, my only therapy to the pain was running, started on April andafter one and a half month of hard work and dedication reached my first 10 miles focused on progressionnot perfection at that point...

Took my first challenge after my accident on 05/29/10 Half marathon Long Beach Marina Vista Park.Ran my second half marathon Legg Lake 06/27/10.

After that ran my first FULL marathon on 07/25/10 not any but the challenging San Francisco Marathon.Followed by the Long Beach Full marathon 10/16/10.

Las Vegas Rock n Roll full marathon 12/05/2010... This was a very important run mentally and physically was going back to where Ihad the accident.Operation Jack Marathon 12/26/10. Which qualified me to become a Marathon Maniac !!!

Run in the Sun Marathon 01/30/2011.Surf City Half Marathon 02/06/2011.Presidents Day Marathon 02/21/2011.

I’m going to run The Los Angeles Marathon this coming March 20th... and from there my plan is to run a full or half marathon eachmonth... as preparation to run an ultra marathon (32 to 50 miles) at the end of 2011.

I’m thankful now every day of my life that I’m alive and running again, I was given a second chance and I'm going to hold on to it, livelife. If this story helps motivate other runners or anyone to take on a challenge and DO IT! , then my purpose was done.

- Violeta Lopez (#3344)

Why I began running…..Up until 2006, I never thought I would run a ½ marathon, much less a full marathon. Originally I made thiscommitment for several reasons. First, I lost my wonderful sister, Jincy “Smiley”, to cancer at the age of 39, and decided to raisemoney for TNT. I believe cancer touches all of our lives and wanted to help by raising money for research. Second, I was, and stillam, grateful for my good health and still follow through with this commitment in honor of her and the pain she endured. Mysister, or shall I say, my “Guardian Angel”, keeps me motivated…there is not enough pain from running to ever match what shewent through for two years.

My son, Garrett, is my biggest cheerleader and fan! Once I overheard him telling a friend, who was asking about my medals on my“wall of fame”, and referred to me as a “kick-butt MOM”. There is not a better feeling than for your kids to be bragging on you.HOW COOL!!!

I have now completed 24 full marathons (Including Boston ’10 and running Boston again this year) along with many ½’s. My firstone being in January 07 and I have not stopped yet. My fondest memory is the first time I crossed the finish line. I was hookedafter that. All the pain, at the time invested, just doesn’t’ matter once you have crossed that line at the finish. The friends I havemade along the way – and the inspiration I receive from other runners is amazing.

One other memory I have from my running experience, was a practice run prior to the RNR San Antonio marathon when two littlegirls saw us running and said they “wanted to be like us” (my friend and I). So we stopped and talked to them and saw them a fewminutes later running and practicing. You never know who is watching and may be inspired by you along the way…

I was out pulling weeds one day, feeling depressed because I couldn't play softball the summer of1978 because of an elbow injury. along came a guy I had seen running by every now and then. hestopped and ask if I ran. I said a mile each day. he said he needed someone to train for amarathon with him. so I asked how far is that. his reply 26.2 miles. my reply "YOU GOTTA BESHITING ME". to which he said when you can run 6 miles call me and gave me his number. thatwas a Friday. Sunday I called said I can do it. we ran six on Monday and I thought I was going todie. we (Glenn Bearson and I) started running together six days a week and that lasted 22 years.we never ran more then 13 miles for a long run leading up to our first marathon, Seattle 1978. wesaid never again, three months later another marathon and the same thing, NEVER AGAIN. wellYakima 2011 will be my 99th and hopefully Whidbey April 10 will be my 100th when I visit the guythat got me started. Oh, and I became a maniac with the urging of Lesa Overfield # 49. I am proudto say that after running Napa this year (March 6, 2011) with my friend Doug Jordan of Santa Rosacalif, he was so inspired by the maniacs that he joined and is now #3590.

- Gary Otheim (#232)

I started running in 1989 on Block Island. I babysat for a family who spent several wks a yearthere, and the parents were runners. They were in their late 30's/early 40's and could outrun me -a 20 yr old (I'd put on those lovely freshman 15 in college). I quickly got in good running shape.Kept it up til I got married and had kids. Stayed in shape by walking for the next 10 yrs. In Dec.2009 a friend asked me to run a 5K w/ her(that was my 1st race). Ran another 5K, a 12K, anddecided I wanted to run a marathon. I had always been a lone runner, but have found it muchmore fun to run w/ others...thus have taken to these races! Started chatting w/ another runner onmy 2nd marathon (the Tri-Cities Marathon), and she was a Maniac. She encouraged me to run theSeattle Marathon and join the Maniacs. So I did, and I'm very happy to be part of this awesomegroup of runners!

F R O M T H E E D I T O R …

As you can tell, I changed the look of the Maniacs newsletter. I hope you like the new look. Ithink it improves the look of the newsletter. The month of March was a fun month for so manyreasons. Personally, it was a big month for me as I ran my "goal" race for the year in running for24 hours straight at Pacific Rim and ran a PR of 110 miles and raised about $2,800 for OperationJack and autism. Other highlights have to be the WET Los Angeles Marathon, the NationalMarathon, Dizzy Daze, Bataan Death March and the Gorge Waterfalls 50k.

As we come to the month of April, I can't help but think about the "BIG" race of the year: Boston! If you are going to be running Boston thisyear please do me a favor. Please write about your experience and take pictures. I would love to have a huge Boston Marathon section in thenext newsletter with photos and stories. You can e-mail them to me at: [email protected] Don't forget to keep sending me photos andstories. The more you guys provide the better this newsletter will be!

F R O M T H E R A M B U N C T I O U S R E V

R H E T O R I C A L R E V E L A T I O N S A N D W ( R I T E S ) …

My Dear President Yee, Henderson, and Phillippi, I do hope this epistle finds you quite well.

Reading what the members have accomplished in the wake of what you three begat eight years ago is alwaysinspirational! ‘Tis glorious that ye have provoked wondrous feats!

Now, Mr. Prez, Sir, HAVE I GOT AN IDEA!!!I have been pondering outside the box of distance running. What could you three and I, Rev. Pokeyfeet, do together

that might inspire and create new fun? So I took stock.Mr. Prez, you run marathons like others take walks, an activity you also pursue passionately, at beautiful sites around

the world. Mr. Phillippi multiples his athletics through triathlons: swimming, biking, and marathoning. Mr. Henderson, inaddition to his enviable acumen for speed though an amateur, is pleasant companionship anywhere. Me? I entered yourworld from another world of discipline, tradition, and rich history: the world of golf.

So then? Follow my thinking in the letter I propose we send forward:

“Dear Gentle Members of The Augusta National Golf Club,

By way of vital introduction to what follows, we are the three founding members (plus one Reverend friend) of what has become an internationalphenomenon: The Marathon Maniacs, a club of nearly 4,000 amateur long-distance recreational runners world-wide.

We broke from the narrow thinking that marathons should be run, if at all, no more than twice per year. We discovered that subtleties in the challenges of thisancient sport inspire dedication, discipline, good health, and renewed appreciation for the world’s beauty and the miraculous nature of the human body. We runbecause it is trying yet fun, demanding yet joyful, and deeply so. We run marathons dozens of times per year.Upon finding we each made these discoveries independently, we united and launched a simple club for like-minded people. The idea has spread exponentially. Our very existence as amateurs and voluntary participants in this profoundly rewarding but maniacal “game” has unwittingly inspired acts of courage and effortsfor personal health and charity-raising that in turn has affected thousands, for which we seek neither fame nor praise. It is our sport that is the hero, and throughit, the thousands who participate. They have inspired and benefitted the millions. We believe we are kindred with you, and you with us, in the spirit of the above. Thus we bring to you an idea that might further compound and historicallyincrease the contributions of our parallel perspectives.

To wit:We beget together a new dual-sport, that itself might generate unknowable millions of good deeds, dollars, and days of delight in dual-sport devotion. That sport: Marathon-to-Golf.The tangible process we propose: together we create an historic event that exemplifies the tenacity, discipline, sportsmanship and endurance of our individualsports, but in a new light, celebrating two traditions that have in common foundations of profound honor, harking back through the history of the hills of Georgiato the hills of ancient Greece. That event: a competition combining a run of 26.2 miles commencing pre-dawn, followed immediately by eighteen holes, a combined score to determine theChampion. The Premier Inaugural Event of the Sport of Marathon-to-Golf would follow a carefully designed course around (if not gently through) the pristine, peaceful pine-needle-carpeted woods of Mr. Jones’ unsurpassed nursery, followed by 18 holes of striking the ball with implements ill-suited for the purpose… .

The Champion would be awarded The Paper Cup Trophy: a sculpture of the long-distance runner’s coveted paper cup of water resting on a table just beyondHogan’s bridge.

The friendly inaugural might have three simultaneous competitions: The Club President’s chosen foursome versus the MarathonManiacs’ team, or in otherwords, The Golfers who do not Run Much, versus the Runners who do not Golf Much. Second, join two golfers and two runners on each team. Third would be theIndividual Event. We are under no false notion that Augusta National needs to add to its standing in charitable traditions. Nor, please, do we propose this idea in the spirit of theSilly Season. Rather, we believe a prudently promoted event of 26.2 miles and 18 holes on the grounds among eight so proposed, for the express purpose ofsuggesting the new sport, would launch an epidemic of contagious proportions, which, in the traditions of both sports, would beget untold new charity-supportingevents, to say nothing of encouraging new and further healthy and civilized recreation generally.

For centuries we humans have run, and we have hit a ball with a stick into a hole, because both restore the mind and soul. None of us deserve any honor forparticipating in these which come so naturally, and which have been established so honorably by heroes before us. To combine the two thoughtfully has apotential that suggests great possibilities.

The world always craves a breath of newness. That the 21st Century might birth a genuinely new recreational idea, yet founded in these ancient and historictraditions, we think is compelling. As for the quiet chortles in the confines of the clubhouse or the bellicose banter in the beer gardens long after, these mightmake it worth doing alone, but we hope rather to see inspired the sort of reflections akin to those for golf, the marathon, and the Olympic Games themselves, thatmove humankind to selfless acts of compassion.

We are in awe of the great cities of Boston, New York and Washington, DC managing the marathon for tens of thousands. We hope more humbly that wemight together contrive a far simpler day that nevertheless would forever touch the lives of millions.

For the possibilities that may come of it, for the charity of it, and to share in simply a good, new, old-fashioned time, we thoughtfully greet you.

President Steve Yee, Mr. Henderson, Mr. Phillippi, and…

The [email protected]

p.s. Yee? I know… I’m nuts. But you started it. Luvya, Rev.
