Family Friendly

Are your events “family Friendly”?

We are not asking whether you provide events for juniors; We are asking if you are happy if families attend, where a junior (who will be supervised by the parents) is also in attendance.

There is a large drop off in participation at events when people have young children. Often this is just seen as “the natural progression”. But it doesn’t need to be.

See the article on page 7 about how your events can benefit from our Fam-ily Friendly program.

Caravan Camping and Outdoor Adventure Show - Wrap Up

In late February Recreation SA held a stall at the Caravan Camping and Outdoor Ad-venture show. Member organisations exhibited at the stall over the 5 days of display as show goers passed through.

We would like to thank our member organisations and clubs for their support and participation over the duration of the show. A special thanks goes out to Bernard Goble for his hand made wooden sea kayak that was on display, this was a big crowd pleaser that attracted many questions and appraisals.

Caravan Camping and Outdoor Adventure Show - Wrap Up

Organisations such as Scouts, Canoe South Australia, Outgrow, Bikeabout, Escapegoat and Guides participated in the show along with West Lakes Canoe Club. The show gained valuable exposure for all organisations and clubs involved and as shown by Roger (see below) is exposure worth seeking again in the future.

An email by Roger French; President of West Lakes Canoe Club.

WLCC was a willing participant at the 2011 Caravan Camping and Outdoor Adventure show and I would recommend that we do this again in 2012. It is an excellent vehicle to publicise the West Lakes Canoe Club and to be able to talk to people about what we offer and what our members can do and do. Our static display of kayaks created much interest.

We hope to get some new WLCC memberships out of it and we can gauge response by the one hundred WLCC membership information packages & application forms that were taken over the four days.

The outcomes for the club will be greater community awareness of West Lakes Canoe Club and more people attending the monthly Club Social Paddles in the Port River with the Dolphins (with free coffee & pancakes after).

I have been involved in many Field Days and I know that talking to people is impor-tant. The more that you can engage with people, the more likely they will respond and then come along to see what we have to offer. It is the “drip feed” model of get-ting the message out there.

Kind regards,

Roger

Royal Life Saving Society - Australia works to prevent drowning and facilitate healthy, ac-tive lifestyles by equipping all Australians with water safety skills. Aquatics Attraction Project(Penny Curtis: Senior Project Officer Service Skills SA)

The Aquatics Attraction Project initially commenced in late 2009 and was designed to combat the increasing difficulties experienced by aquatics industry enterprises in attract-ing and retaining skilled professionals.

Late last year Penny Curtis, Senior project officer at Service Skills SA was engaged to maximise project outcome and complete the workforce development component of the project. Information collected during the recent industry consultations indicated that there may be a significant shortage of 100 -150 trained aquatic staff for the start of the 2011 (October 2011) season.

To assist the industry manage this skills shortage the Industry Skills Development Direc-torate of the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) have agreed to fund the training of a significant number of personnel.

The proposed program would be managed by Service Skills SA and involve a training skills set comprising of Pool Lifeguard, Pool Operator, Austswim, Bronze Medallion, Senior First Aid delivered by Sport SA and Royal Life. Current aquatics employees could be nominated to receive training in their specific skills gaps.

This is the perfect opportunity for SA Aquatics Industry enterprises to train up a select team of staff. To be involved employers will be required to attract, screen and recruit the participants as well as meet several other project obligations.

Submission will open shortly and training placements will be rewarded on a first in first served basis.

For any further questions please contact Penny Curtis on (08) 362 6255 or email: [email protected].

Family FriendlyKeeping and retaining members

There are a number of points in a person’s life where they start activities, stop activities, change focus etc. This affects the number of people who come to your activities. One of the these points is when people have young kids. Suddenly it can seem all too hard to pack for an activity and for your kids. It doesn’t have to be this way. Having some very simple Family Friendly practices in place can help you recruit and retain more members/participants.

Let me give you a personal example; Orienteering

On the morning you pack your car including the normal stuff; nappies, toys, food, etc and your orienteering gear. My wife an I work as a team; one of us intends to compete, the other is there to “play” with our kid.Parent/kid sign up for the easiest course (other parent participates at their normal level). Link-ing up with other parent/kid teams we go off to “find fairies”, locate Shaun the sheep, etc. This is done following the simplest course. The parent/kid teams usually complete a fair proportion of the course before the lure of hot dogs brings us back to the car park.Come the end of the activity, one member has completed their choice of activity, the other has;

- enjoyed an outdoor activity- met like minded parents- given their kid some exercise

YOU have had more participants!

Those of you with kids know that having other families around helps in “entertaining” and often makes it possible to get your kids involved in the activity. Put 1 young child with 1 kayak and only “random” play normally happens. Put a group together and the interest level rises.

Recreation SA through the Get Out and Stay Out program is about to start promot-ing Family Friendly Activities.

We will promote via; newsletter, Facebook and Twitter, your Family Friendly activities providing a point for families to see that other families will be at the activity.

What we ask you to provide is;

- An area where small kids are able to play- Activities where you allow parent/kid participation

What we are not asking for is

- supervision; the parents of each kid will provide the supervision- junior activities; you don’t need to provide an activity, but allow an area where the kids can “have fun” and be happy for parent/kid teams to participate at the easiest level.

Page 8: March 2011 E-news

How to get involved in the Family Friendly programTell us about the activity via; [email protected]

Give us details of “junior”, “basic” or “simple” activities that you are happy for parent/kid groups to get involved in.

We will contact you to confirm details then we will promote it to young families.

SA Mountain Bike AssociationSouth Australia has an amazing array of trails, parks and reserves. Only some of these are open to mountain bike riding. The South Australian Mountain Bike Association (SAMBA) was established to pro-vide an effective approach to mountain bike advocacy and delivering sustainable trail access, planning, development and maintenance across the State. Its mission is to create, protect and promote diverse mountain bike riding opportunities in South Australia by building a united, informed and engaged com-munity.

Our vision is the development of a world class trail network for South Australia. This requires a coordi-nated effort to advocate for access, develop new trails and ensure sustainable maintenance of the trail network.

We want to see the sustainable development of mountain biking across South Australia, not just for those who want to race, but everyone who wants to get outdoors and enjoy riding a bike in the bush. We would like to increase the number of people engaged in the mountain biking community, includ-ing in trail construction and maintenance. SAMBA wants to work collaboratively with the community to make this a reality.

More information on SAMBA and how to get involved is on the SAMBA website;
