Theperson who cuts your fabric in the fabric store will know whatthis means. There is more information about fabric selectionon the supply list for this class. 2010 OPPORTUNITY QUILT TRAVELNEWS

Help! We Need More Travelers!

If you read the article in this Newsletter thanking all ourguild members for volunteering their time to travel ourquilt, youll see that many have taken the quilt on morethan one trip. We need more help and I would begrateful it if you would please check your calendars and atour March meeting (or sooner!), please volunteer for oneor more of the following.

QUILT RUSH April 14th 18thFor anyone not familiar with how this works, QUILT RUSHis an annual event, hosted by 15 Northern California shops.Shoppers (shopper = quilter) pick up a passport from anyone of the participating shops their goal is to visit all 15

shops during the 5 day event. Their passports are stampedat each shop they visit. If they turn in their completedpassport with all 15 stamps by Sunday, April 18th (or attheir last shop stop) they become eligible for QUILT RUSH prizes. Tayos Fabric in Fair Oaks is one of theparticipating stores and theyve invited us to display ourquilt and sell raffle tickets during this five day event. Itsa great opportunity for our guild, but does require a lot ofwomanpower (manpower didnt seem appropriate somehow!).We have 14 ladies whove signed up already, but we needfour more volunteers. The first four days are actually

9:00 am to 7:00 pm but Ive cut down the hours in thehopes it will encourage more volunteers. We still need:Friday April 16 9:00 am 1:00 pm One (1) Person

1:00 pm 5:00 pm Two (2) PeopleSunday April 18 10:00 am 4:00 pm One (1) Person

LOOMIS QUILT GUILD Wednesday April 21 7:00 pmJulie Sackett has volunteered for Loomis, but we coulduse one additional person to travel with her. Its alwaysmore fun with two people and certainly much easier forthe set up and handling the ticket sales.

Please email or call me if you have any questions. Thank you!

Thanks to ValerieKinion for covering for me during the Christmasbrunch and at the July meeting, Thanks to JulieSackett for giving me some good ideas that workedout. NO SLIP HOOP ORDERI have had lots of requests to put in another orderfor the No-Slip Embroidery Hoops. I have found a lessexpensive source - straight from the owner himself. So I have set up an account with him. I am orderingnow and they will be available at the next guildmeeting. I have also received requests for 7" hoops, Iwill be ordering that size as well as the 5" size. Theadvantage of the 5" hoops, although you do have tomove it around your work more, it it does not causehand damage like Carpal Tunnel, cramping or enhancearthritis if you already have it. The advantage to the7" hoop is that you don't have to move it around yourwork as much and many people find that they can workwith this size and not get any cramping. I am orderingone dozen of each size.

5" Hoops: $6.50 each7" Hoops: $7.00 each

Bring cash, or pay by check made out to MargaretWard. If more are requested/needed I will makeanother order later.

A Job Well Done!

Thank you to the group of women (Carol Black, SueTerwilliger, Gabrielle Wildanger, Cordelia Min, BeverlyPerdue, Phyllis Day, Donna Palmer, and Karen Gray) whave stepped up, and are going through all thefinancials, to give the membership a really good ideaof what it costs to run the guild. In seeing some ofthe emails and information going back and forth, theyare trying their best to give us all the information, sowe can make the best choice for this guild.

For the first time, since the guild was started, we areoperating in the red (as per the approved budget, notthe bank balance). We do have some financial 'cush',but we cannot continue on this path, or it couldpossibly be the demise of this guild. The board isaware that an increase in anything, during these tougheconomic times, is difficult. But we are also in our 8th

year as a guild, and have never increased dues, eventhough many of the operation cost have gone up.

An email will be coming in a day or so. Please read itthrough and think about how you want to vote, regarding an increase in dues, this month. Andwhatever decision is decided, know that we will allcontinue to be friends and 'quilt sisters'.

History of Aprons

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.The principal use of Grandma's apron was toprotect the dress underneath, because she onlyhad a few, it was easier to wash aprons thandresses and they used less material, but alongwith that, it served as a potholder for removinghot pans from the oven.It was wonderful for drying children's tears, andon occasion was even used for cleaning out dirtyears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used forcarrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were idealhiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandmawrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiringbrow, bent over the hot wood stove.Chips and kindling wood were brought into thekitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts ofvegetables. After the peas had been shelled, itcarried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in applesthat had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, itwas surprising how much furniture that old aproncould dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out ontothe porch, waved her apron, and the men knew itwas time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone inventssomething that will replace that ' old-time apron'that served so many purposes.Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies onthe window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sillto thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure outhow many germs were on that apron.I don't think I ever caught anything from anapron.

Quilty Tips

When you are making 1/2 square triangles always sew a SCANT 1/4 inch (rather than a regular 1/4 inch) from thecenter diagonal line so that the fabric will have a bit more room to flip over when you press it. Most times you cancut your initial squares a FULL 1 inch larger (rather than the standard 7/8 inch) and then just trim them down tothe finished size + 1/2 inch for the seams allowances. Easier 'math' and better to be too big and trim down, thanto end up being too small.

Do you have those plentiful free-advertising, flat refrigerator magnets? Put 'em to use; they safely handle rotarycutter blades... instead of risking a finger, the magnets will safely hold the blades while removing from thepackage or loading the cutter, etc... easy and free.

White Vinegar _ it's not just for coleslaw anymore. It is useful for quilting as well. Unlike me, you probablypre_wash your fabrics. One cup of vinegar added to the wash water will help set colors. It also helps whenpressing. Keep some vinegar in a spray bottle. If your fabric is wrinkled, give it a sprits, then press _ the wrinkleswill disappear. A sprits on the right side of a seam will also help you press that sucker flat. Yes, it makes yourquilt smell like salad dressing, but the scent will dissipate over time. And, if you're impatient, a blast of perfumeshould do the trick.
