DID YOU KNOW...

“Stewardesses” is the longest word typed with only the left hand

And “lollipop” is the longest word typed with your right hand. (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn’t you?) No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple.

“Dreamt” is the only English word that ends in the letters “mt”.

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. The sentence: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” uses every letter of the alphabet. The words ‘racecar,’ ‘kayak,’ and ‘level’ are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes).

There are only four words in the English language which end in “dous”: tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: “abste-mious” and “facetious.”(Yes, admit it, you are going to say, a e i o u)

TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard.

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. (Some days that’s about what my memory span is.)

A “jiffy” is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second.

A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes. A snail can sleep for three years. (I know some people that could do this too.!) Almonds are a member of the peach family. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.

Babies are born without kneecaps. They don’t appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age.

February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon.

In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been domesticated.

If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast, the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction. Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors. Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite!

Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated.

The average person’s left hand does 56% of the typing.

The cruise liner, QE2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns. The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket.

The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid. There are more chickens than people in the world. Winston Churchill was born in a ladies’ room during a dance. Women blink nearly twice as much as men.

Now you know more than you did before!!

TRUE OR FALSE? I hope you guys do better than I did! This information is according to

www.mythbusters.com.

1.It’s hotter in the summertime because the Earth is closer to the sun.

2.Waterproof sunscreen can cause blindness if it gets in your eyes.

3.If you stare at the sun, even during an eclipse, you could go blind.

4.Too many visits to the tanning salon can damage your internal or-

gans.

5.If you go swimming less than an hour after eating, you will get

stomach cramps and drown.

6.Sunscreens with an SPF of 40 or 50 do not provide significantly

more protection against UV rays than SPF-30 sunscreens.

7.If you are stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the ocean, you

should have someone urinate on the sting.

8.Eating bananas will attract mosquitoes, while eating garlic will

repel them.

9.You can get sunburned through a window.

10.Having a good “base tan” will help prevent sunburn if you’ll be

spending a lot of time in the sun. Answers on Page 20

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard. I could

tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was

well taken care of.

He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his

head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the

hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to

the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked

inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an

hour.

This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar: ‘I would like to find

out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are

aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a

nap.’

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note

pinned to his collar: ‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the

age of 3 - he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him

tomorrow?’

Page 4 March, 2009 Texas TwisterCold Winter

It was already late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn’t tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the tribe should collect fire-wood to be prepared. But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, ‘Is the coming winter going to be cold?’ ‘It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,’ the meteorologist at the weather service re-sponded. So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. ‘Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?’ ‘Yes,’ the man at National Weather Service again replied, ‘it’s going to be a very cold winter.’ The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later the chief called the National Weather Service again. ‘Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?’ ‘Absolutely,’ the man replied. ‘It’s looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we’ve ever seen.’ ‘How can you be so sure?’ the chief asked. The weatherman replied, ‘The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy.’

“Thumb Sucking”

Do you have a child over two or three who sucks his thumb, finger, or pacifier? If so, now would be a good time to really work with him on breaking this habit. In addition to spreading germs, a sucking habit can have serious consequences on your child’s teeth, jaws, and appearance! The longer the habit goes on, the more severe the problems be-come. When a child who sucks his thumb comes into my office, I can see the signs of his bad habit immediately. For one thing, many children who suck on a thumb or finger will have an open bite. This means that their front upper and lower teeth do not touch. Since these teeth are designed to cut food into bites for chewing, if they do not touch then your child will have to shift to their back teeth. This will cause difficulty cutting their food into manageable bites. Often times, if the habit has been going on for a while, then the child may also have a more narrow, protrusive upper jaw. This will make their front teeth stick out even more and an actually change the shape of their face, drastically altering their appearance. The child will usually require braces and/or facial surgery as a teenager in order to correct the damage done by thumb sucking. Many children only suck their thumb in their sleep, so it can be a difficult habit to break. However, due to the seriousness of the problems it can cause, especially the longer it goes on, it is not an issue you want to continue to ignore. If your child sucks his thumb, make sure to ask your dentist about it on his next check up. And make sure to have regular check ups for yourself and your children. Especially you moms! So many of you neglect yourselves and your dental health because you’re so busy making sure everyone else is taken care of. Remember though, early detection of problems results in far less pain and expense in the long run. So take care of your teeth and they’ll take care of you!

IF IT’S NOT WATER... IT’S NOT WATER!

I told myself the same thing that many of you tell yourselves. I drink plenty of fluids. Coke, Diet Coke, Tea, or Coffee. But, your body needs ‘free’ water. According to wikipedia.com, Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water. Blood contains 95% water, body fat contains 14% water and bone has 22% water. The human body is about 60% water in adult males and 55% in adult females.Drinking fluids is great. However, if you want your body to be healthy, then you need to drink pure, clean water. And, don’t wait until you are thirsty to get a drink. You should keep some on hand. By the time you actually become thirsty, your body is already becoming dehydrated. If you take any living cell and dry it out, it will die. It cost me about $20 per month to have really cold and very hot water available at the touch of a button. I get it from Aerobic Water. I know that I can see a huge difference in the way I feel since I have ‘kicked’ my Diet Coke habit. And, I also kicked off about 40 pounds. Just give it a try, and see how much better you feel.

ADVICE COLUMNS Dear Walter,

I hope you can help me. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn’t driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband’s help. When I got home I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbours daughter. I am 32, my husband is 34 and the neighbours daughter is 22. We have been married for ten years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increas-ingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasinglydistant. He won’t go to counselling and I’m afraid I can’t get through to him any-more.

Can you please help?

Sincerely, Sheila

.......................................................................

Dear Sheila:

A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by check-ing that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors.

I hope this helps,Walter

Don’t Be Too Busy to Teach!

When we are living our day to day lives, do we take time to think about our habits? The way we disci-pline, our language, our housekeeping, or whatever it may be, and how it affects our family? I just realized this past weekend that sometimes I would get busy and my kids wanted to do something, I would just say no. And, when they asked why, I didn’t take the time to explain things to them. It was easier to say, “Because I said so”. It is our duty as parents to teach our children. We shouldn’t rely on their school, or others teaching them. It’s our job! A job that was given to us by

God, as a blessing! I decided to work on this part of my parenting. When my children ask me something I try, key word try, to explain to them the results of that particular action. I try to explain to them in a language they can understand. If my 2 year old is crying for a cookie, I am talking to him and explaining, “Dinner is almost ready. How about some yogurt, and after dinner you may have a cookie”. It’s amazing how he under-stands. With older children you may go into it with further explanation of why we don’t eat cookies be-fore dinner. Explain how we need to eat something healthy, if we can’t quite make it until dinner is fin-ished. Parents, I am not saying that you should ex-plain yourself to your child. You are the parent and your child is the child, and it’s very important that your child knows that. However, it’s a good idea to teach your child so they can understand, and when you are not available they can still make good choic-es.

It’s almost spring again. At least some days feel like spring. Then for a couple of days it is winter all over! We just have to grin and bear it. We will be complaining about the too hot weather soon, but wouldn’t you hate to live up north? We can always find something to be thankful for. This month you get some recipes that aren’t hard to make and they are good. So until we get some fresh vegetables out of the garden we will have to have canned or frozen. Oven Fried Chicken with Honey Butter Sauce1 C. all purpose flour 8 T. oleo (1 stick) melted2 t. salt ¼ t. pepper2 t. paprika 1 – 3 to 4 lb. chicken cut into 8 piecesHoney Butter Sauce4 t. (1/4 C.) Pour the melted oleo into a 9” X 13” baking pan. Add pieces of floured chicken in a single layer, turning chicken to

coat with oleo. Bake skin side down for 30 minutes. While chicken is cooking, make sauce by melting the oleo in a small pan and beating in the honey and lemon juice. Turn chicken pieces, pour honey butter sauce over them, and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until tender. Spoon pan juices over chicken and serve! OVER MEDICATED AND UNIFORMED? by Ginger Lane

“Walking, Mom just ‘needs’ to walk.” My sister, Debby, told me. “Walking, what are you talking about? What do you mean, she needs to walk?” I asked. “I don’t know, Ginger, she just says she has to walk, gets up, and makes several rounds through the house.”

Ok, I’m no doctor, but from about 100 miles away from my parents, that sound-ed more than a little bit weird. My mom is the most sensible, well-rounded person I’ve ever known. When I got her back on the phone, when I questioned her ‘need’ to walk, she was defensive. And, being defensive was also not in her nature. All the things that had kept me from visiting in the last couple of months were now not so important. And, the first thing I thought of was the enormous amount of medicine she had been given by her doctor. I had questioned her in the past as to why she was taking all of it because, outwardly, she looked to be the picture of health. She said, “Because the doctor told me to.” It didn’t take long for me to make the trip back home to see for myself. It just didn’t seem real, like it could really be a problem. We were all sitting around the den, and my mom got up and took off towards the back part of the house. I followed. She asked me where I was going, and I told her I was going to find out where she was going. I could see that she was a bit agitated and her steps were a bit shuffled. She told me she was just going to walk, I asked why, and then the words I really didn’t want to hear. My wonderful, smart, level headed mother told me she didn’t know why, she just had to walk. Tears came to my eyes, and a my flight or fight reaction took over in the fight mode. When we made our way back to the kitchen or her pharmacy, I asked her to get them out, and explain what each one of them was for. There were 13. And, we were able to have a conversation about other symptoms she was having. I went home and spent the next 25 of my waking hours on the internet. I researched each one for side effects. And, I found the culprit. And, the news wasn’t good. One of the medications she was taking was Reglan, or generic name metoclopramide, for acid reflux. And, one of the side effects was drug induced Parkinsonism. The condition was 95% irreversible in women her age. She had taken Rolaids for years, but when she asked her doctor if it was ok to use Rolaids with all her other medications, he quickly whipped out the prescription tab-let and gave her more drugs to take. I wanted to be sure, so I took the list of drugs to 3 pharmacies, gave them the symptoms, and asked if they could tell me which one they felt might cause them. Not one pharmacist had a clue. Not one. But, the information I got from the internet was clear. Stop taking the medication immediately, and get to a neurolo-gist! I wasn’t sure my mother was in the mood to take my advice, but I made the call. I didn’t want to scare her, but since it was just a treatment for heart burn, I felt safe in getting her to stop taking it. She agreed, and she also made the appointment to see the neurologist. She took her list of medication with her, and after the list was examined, she was instructed to stop more medications, and she made an almost overnight recovery! According to www.yourhealthbase.com drug induced Parkinsonism is common. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have just released the results of a 15- year study aimed at determining the incidence of the various types of parkinsonism in a representative sample of residents in Olmsted County. During the period 1976 through 1990 the researchers documented 364 cases of parkinsonism. Most of these (42 per cent) were classified as Parkinson’s disease, but an astounding 20 per cent was deemed to have been caused by poisoning by pharmaceutical drugs. The incidence of drug- induced parkinsonism was particularly high among women where it accounted for 28 per cent of all cases. We were very blessed. But, please, be careful of your medications. Talk to your doctor before stopping any medications. Most of them are safe. Make sure each of them is necessary and not producing side effects worse than the illness. There is so much in-formation available to us now. We can be informed about cause and effect. Alternative treatments are at the touch of a button. If you don’t have access to the internet, can’t get to a library or please ask for help. Being overmedicated and uninformed can be a recipe for disaster.

Q. When my mother passed away last year, we were told that the funeral director could not dye her hair because it would not take right. Prior to her death, mother had been in the hospital for a very long time and she just didn’t look like her-self without her darker hair. Is this really true or could we have colored mothers hair for the fu-neral? Shannon (Quinlan) A. At the moment of death, the natural break-down immediately begins to happen to the body. The heartbeat ceases, the blood flow stops and the body will become cold. Most professional hair dyes rely heavily on the natural body heat of the scalp to assist in the satisfactory comple-tion of the chemical reaction of hair dyes. While the funeral director may not have been able to use the hair dye as per the instructions included with such dyes, there are other ways to create the

same effect without relying on body heat. Once the dye is placed on the scalp, a hair dryer can be used to ‘heat up’ the scalp. Once the hair is com-pletely dry, the hair needs to be conservatively rinsed. Due to the much needed natural body heat, the final results may not have the same dra-matic color that you are used to seeing but the hair will take on a large amount of the color. The best option for coloring the hair of a deceased loved one is to use a hair rinse. A rinse follows the same concept as permanent dyes ex-cept they do not rely on body heat to complete their process. A rinse will place a layer of col-or on the hair shaft but does not penetrate the hair itself, as with permanent dyes. A rinse can be washed out easily so there is no need to ap-ply water following the process. Once the hair is cleaned and conditioned, the rinse is applied onto the hair. After it is massaged in, the hair is dried and styled as usual. The rinse form of dye-ing the hair truly creates the best and most dra-matic results. Either option is very time consum-ing and may take great patience on the side of the funeral director to complete but as they say the end justifies the means. If a family can re-ceive a small comfort during the most tragic time in their lives, then every effort is worth it and

should be pursued with honor and compassion. (If you have a question that you would like an-swered in this column, please write to ASK THE DIRECTOR c/o Ingram Funeral Home P.O. Box 2218 Quinlan, Texas 75474).

By Pastors Dean & Ruth [email protected]

Why blame God when things don’t go right? God is good, and He still performs miracles today. However, He’s not obligated to go beyond His Word. We need to be looking at our own reflection to find out who’s respon-sible and looking to the Word of God to turn things around. Here are a few simple truths about faith that will get you from wanting to having: But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (He-brews 11:6) For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall be-lieve that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. (Mark 11:23, 24)FAITH ISN’T worrying and crying and trying to “get God to do something.” Faith knows that it’s done. We ask God for something and believe that we have received it. We don’t have to cry or crawl or beg. Faith doesn’t run on emo-tion. Faith isn’t a feeling. Begging isn’t believing. Faith works by love, through the Word of God. It’s not faith to think, “Well, if this doesn’t work, then I’ll do this other thing.” We don’t try faith to see if it works. We trust God, we confess His Word, and we rest in the assurance of His promises.FAITH ISN’T “just waiting on God” to do it.According to some people, they’ve been “waiting on God” for years. And all that time God was waiting for them to obey what He has already told them in His holy written Word. We are to be led by peace if the Bible doesn’t ad-dress a matter specifically (Colossians 3:15), but there are several things in the Bible that we know are God’s will. For example, He wants everyone to be saved (1 Timo-thy 2:4). So, if we pray for Uncle John to get saved, and nothing seems to happen, does that mean that God doesn’t want Uncle John saved. NO! It means we need to learn how to exercise our faith for our loved one’s salvation and to pray effectively; pray like the Bible teaches us to. Pray the Ephesians prayers (Ephesians 1:17-23 & 3:14-19) over them so “the eyes of their understanding will be enlight-ened” to the Gospel or pray that laborers be sent into their pathway (Matthew 9:37-38).FAITH ISN’T saying you’re well when the Doctor con-firms you are sick. We can’t cure a disease by saying it’s not there. However, if you say “my disease” then your words have taken ownership of that disease. And why would you ac-cept a delivery of disease and/or death when you are believ-ing God for health? We don’t deny that someone is sick, we deny the sickness’ right to exist in his/her body. We believe God’s Word that by Jesus’ stripes we are healed. He personally bore our sins in His [own] body on the tree [as on an altar and offered Himself on it], that we might die (cease to exist) to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed. (I Peter 2:24, Am-plified)FAITH ISN’T believing one minute and whining the next. Making faith-filled confessions is what believers

do to activate the Word of God in their lives. This is a con-sistent effort to keep God’s Word in your mouth instead of rehearsing the circumstances. If you’ve developed the habit of complaining, make the decision now to replace negative thoughts with God’s promises. It’s not hit and miss—up one day and down the next. Stop yourself when the sewage of doubt, gossip, and unbelief begin to spew out of your mouth. Instead, take the scriptures that you are standing on and say them out loud in faith to see the situation change. If you stay with the Word of God it will change you and it will change your circumstances. “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19, NIV)

Local author and Bible teacher Ruth Remmers is asking for help from the ladies of the area. She is currently interviewing women of all ages who want to share something extraordinary that God has done in their lives. “This book will have the testimonies of women from all walks of life telling how they trusted God through difficult and even impossible situations,” Mrs. Remmers said. “These testimonies are not only giving God the glory He deserves, but they also encourage other women going through similar circumstances.”

Mrs. Remmers formerly taught algebra at Ter-rell Middle School and at Wills Point High School, and she and her husband owned a porta-ble building business in the area. The Remmers are currently pastoring Life of Faith Covenant Church, located on Hwy. 34 at Joyce Road in Kaufman. Their column, “Faith is a Lifestyle,” is published monthly in the Texas Twister news-paper. For more information, please call 903-217-6988.

Well, it’s the same old story. Warm and cold. The fish that were holding in the shallow water, have backed out in deeper water since the cold front on Saturday 2-21-09. The water looks good and what fish we are catching are good quality fish, from 3 to 7 pounds. We are not catching the numbers but they are decent fish. The water temp. is between 52 degrees out on main lake points to the upper 50’s and low 60’s in the backs of the shallow creeks. I am using red and crawfish colored lipless crank-baits and the new Lakefork Trophy lure Wack-N-Worm in green pumpkin. Its a little early yet but there are a few fish on main lake points to be caught on a chatterbait with a 3.5 inch lakefork swim shad, in white and shad colors. Looks like the wind is going to keep on blow-

ing, so get on the main lake points and keep searching the edges of the grass in 4 to 8 feet of water. They will show up soon and go to eating these swim baits and they will be good fish. When fishing the Wack-N-Worm, fish it slow and make deliberate casts to the grassy edges and the standing timber. I’m using these baits in watermelon red and green pumpkin also with the tail dipped in chartreuse dye fished slow. Just remember be careful and courteous out there,

we all want to have fun and

catch that fish of a lifetime. For any info on guide trips, please feel free to call me at Tim Walkers guide service at 817-999-7876 or call Froggy D’s Bait and Tackle at 903-765-2100. Bob and Janie will make you feel right at home and can take care of all your bait and tackle needs. Or call Lake Fork Light House at 903-765-2415, Fisherman’s Cove Marina at 903 765 2943. They all know how to get in touch with me. And stop in at LAKE FORK TROPHY TACKLE in Emory and visit with Ernie Dye. They are great folks and will get you what you need.

Fishing Report From Lake Fork Jerry Bonner from Irving, Texas spent his Valentine’s Day fishing Lake Fork. He stopped in at Froggy D’s and purchased his minnows and was happy to stop back in on his way out to provide this fishing report. Jerry was crappie fishing and from 2:00 to 4:30pm and he limited out (25 fish) in this short time period. He was fishing off the point of Little Caney in 55 ft deep water, but on a 40 ft. hump. He was using minnows 3 rounds off of the bottom. He caught most females with eggs, but some very nice size crappies.

***Last Minute Fishing Report from Froggy D’s: February 22, 2009There was a crappie weighed in at 3 pounds. Which for the folks familiar with Lake Fork this is just under the Lake Record!

*** Ben Clay from Moline, Il, fishing by the 515 bridge caught a 3lb black crap-pie using a ultra light rod and reel. This fish was caught using shiners.

ANSWERS TO TRUE-FALSE QUESTIONS ON PAGE

1. FALSE! The Earth is actually closer to the sun in Janu-ary, and farthest from the sun in July. It’s not the distance from the sun that causes the change in seasons, but our position relative to the sun. The Earth is tilted at a 23.5-degree angle to its orbit around the sun. In the summer, even though it’s slightly further from the sun, the northern hemisphere is tilted so the sun’s rays hit it more directly than they do in the wintertime, which is what makes it hot-ter. Because the days are longer in the summertime, the sun also has more time to heat up the Earth. The Earth’s tilt is also why the seasons are re-versed in the southern hemisphere.2.FALSE! An email that circulated on the Internet in 1998 told the frightening tale of a 2-year-old who got water-proof sunscreen in his eyes. The mother claimed that be-cause it was waterproof, she wasn’t able to flush it out with water or the child’s natural tears, and had to rush him to the emergency room. Even after doctors cleaned his eyes with special chemicals, the child was blind for two days. However, no details were provided to substanti-ate the facts of this story (the boy’s full name, the brand of sunscreen, the name of the hospital, etc.). Tales such as this that fail to provide any details can generally be safely disregarded. Just because a sunscreen is waterproof doesn’t mean it can’t be flushed from the eyes with water or tears. And while sunscreen can irritate your eyes, there is no evi-dence that it can cause blindness. The American Academy

of Ophthalmology and the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System both released statements indicating that this story was a hoax.3.TRUE! Direct sunlight can damage the retina -- light-sensitive nerve endings in the back of the eye -- causing impaired vision or blindness. You should never look di-rectly at the sun. Dark sunglasses or even a welder’s hel-met will not protect your eyes, not even during an eclipse.4.FALSE! Variations of this cautionary tale have circulated by email for several years. For example, a young woman wants to look good for her wedding or other formal event, but is told at the tanning salon that she is limited to 30 minutes a day. Eager to achieve a “healthy glow” in time for the big day, she visits every tanning parlor in town over the next few days, maxing out her time at each one. At or soon after the event, the woman emits a foul odor and/or dies, and it is discovered that she has essentially cooked her internal organs. Tanning lamps emit ultraviolet light waves, and ultraviolet radiation only penetrates one-sixteenth of an inch into your skin -- not nearly enough to affect a hu-man’s internal organs. So while tanning, either naturally or on a tanning bed, can cause skin cancer or eye damage, it cannot harm your organs. 5.FALSE! Not once has a drowning death been attributed to “swimming with a full stomach.” Yes, swimmers can develop cramps in the water, but few are the result of eat-ing right before swimming. And unless you can’t swim (in which case you should wait until you’ve had lessons be-fore hitting the water), no cramp would be serious enough to prevent you from swimming to safety.6.TRUE! Tests have shown that sunscreens with an SPF of

15 block 93 percent of UV rays, while SPF-30 sunscreens block about 97 percent. Anything higher than 30 still hov-ers around 97 percent. The Food and Drug Administration has recommended limiting SPF values on sunscreen labels to SPF 30 to prevent consumers from spending more time in the sun than they should.7.FALSE! If you are ever unfortunate enough to get stung by a jellyfish, you’ll have some small consolation in knowing that there is no need to add insult to injury by asking someone to pee on you. Experts recommend care-fully scraping off any tentacles that have adhered to the skin and treating the sting with vinegar, baking soda, ice packs, salt water, hot water or even meat tenderizer -- but definitely NOT urine.8.FALSE! Modifying your diet will not protect you against mosquito bites. Nor will rubbing yourself with fabric soft-ener sheets -- another common home remedy. The only proven way to prevent mosquito bites is to keep your skin covered and wear an insect repellent containing DEET.9.TRUE! While most car windshields and newer windows in homes are treated to filter out the sun’s UV rays, they can’t block them entirely, so it’s still possible to get burned through a window. Just because you are inside your home or car, don’t think you’re safe from sunburn.10.FALSE! There is really no such thing as a “healthy tan.” Visiting a tanning parlor before your Caribbean cruise or Hawaiian trip can cause just as much damage to your skin as the sun exposure you’ll experience on your vacation. A dark tan on fair skin is only equivalent to a sunscreen with SPF 2 or 4, which won’t provide much additional protec-tion from the sun.

Stop sending text messageswhile driving your car!!

I can only imagine that when the first cars hit the road, parents were worried about their children’s driving habits. “Keep both hands on the wheel!” Then, with car radios, they probably restricted them from listening in an effort to keep their minds on the road. I know my Mom and Dad have been worried about me talking on my cell phone for years. And, with each new generation, there are additional toys to keep us entertained as we drive. And, all of these toys bring new danger. More deaths. But, now, the absolute limit! The ‘DON’T DO IT OF ALL TIMES!’ Do not text on your cell phone while driving. We like to call it multi-tasking, but the truth is that text messaging while driving is just an accident looking for a place to happen.Parents, you need to set an example for your children. Just don’t do it. There are a couple of products on the market to make sure that your children aren’t.Websafety from a company out of Dallas called WPN now offers a product that will disable the cell phone from work-ing while the phone is moving at ‘driving speed’. I personally don’t have any experience with it, but if I had a teenager who I thought might be using text messaging while driving, I would definitely give it a try. The only down side is that it also disables it while the child is riding with someone else. Check it out at www.websafety.com! It also will:• The World’s Most Comprehensive Word Recog-nition Library searches 4,000-plus words and phrases that reveal threats, sexually explicit content, cyber-bullying, suicide dialogue, drug involvement and contact with dan-gerous strangers. • ‘Smart’ Alert Network Notifications are sent to parents instantly when a child’s safety is in question. • “Where R U?” Technology allows parents to locate a child who doesn’t show up or check-in when agreed. • GPS “Virtual Fence” Technology enables parents to set predefined areas for their child to stay within ... and be alerted if that boundary is violated. Ideal for blocking any location you want your child to avoid, or to make sure your child arrives at — and stays at — school. • Keeps Teenage Drivers Safer: - Speed Reminders: If your teen exceeds the speed limit, or races, you’ll receive an alert.- Driving Curfew Reminders: Make sure your child doesn’t forget what time they promised to be home.- Designated Driving Zones: If you want certain hangouts, hot spots or areas to be off limits, you’ll be alerted if your child goes anyway.- Arrival & Departure Notifications: Know when your child gets to or leaves a destination.• Texting Termination: Parents can program the phone to prevent children from sending or receiving text messages in class, on school grounds or while driving. Teachers are calling this feature a significant breakthrough that eliminates many of the problems they face today, in-cluding: daydreaming, socializing during school hours and cheating on exams.
