Prisons are not always made of four walls with bars over the windows. Some prisons are made of despair, addiction, hatred and unforgiveness. In Matthew’s gospel Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35-36) In what ways can we be with the sick and the imprisoned.? St. Augustine’s increase totals $727 per week and Holy Family’s increase totals $658 per week. Thus far, St. Augustine’s average increase per person in weekly offerings is $5.59. Holy Family’s average increase per person in weekly offerings is $5.22. This is even better than anticipated so early in our Campaign. We will keep you informed as more envelopes are returned. Corporal Works of Mercy

Pope Francis has said that Jesus is the face of the Father’s mercy – he reveals the mercy of God by his words, actions, and person. We follow Jesus’ example when we when we open ourselves to the Father’s mercy by sincerely “looking into the eyes” of our brothers and sisters, especially those who have been denied their dignity. Here are a few suggestions to help restore others’ dignity just by “being with” them.

Visiting the Sick Those who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time to visit and comfort them. • Give blood• Spend time volunteering at a nursing home – Get creative and make use of your talents (e.g. sing, read,

paint, call Bingo, etc.)!• Take time on a Saturday to stop and visit with an elderly neighbor.• Offer to assist caregivers of chronically sick family members on a one-time or periodic basis. Give

caregivers time off from their care-giving responsibilities so they can rest, complete personal chores, or enjoy a relaxing break.

• Next time you make a meal that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and give it to a family in your parish who has a sick loved one.

Visiting the Imprisoned People in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ. Even St. Paul was a prisoner along with St. Peter as well. • See if your parish, or a nearby parish, has a prison ministry and if so, get involved.• Volunteer to help out or donate to charities that give Christmas presents to children whose parents are in

prison.• Help make toiletry bags, cards and letters, for Sacred Heart rehab.

Pope Francis says, “Mercy is the “beating heart of the gospel” and “It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy.” (Misericordia Vultus) Be the beating heart of the gospel by serving our brothers and sisters through the corporal works of mercy each week.

Upcoming Out-reaches

April 16th @ Holy Family May 21th @ St. Augustine June 18th @ Holy Family

It's a long Mass today. Palms and Passion all rolled into one. We rejoice and we become somber as we recall some of the most important events of our faith. Remember back in January when we read from the very beginning of Luke's Gospel. This is what he said: "Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you" (Lk 1:1-3).

Luke's orderly account has Jesus slowly making his journey to Jerusalem. Today's Mass brings that journey to an end, at least as far as our reading of Luke is concerned. To the acclaim of crowds, Jesus enters the city on a colt. But his journey eventually leads him to the Mount of Olives and then to Golgotha and finally to a rock-hewn tomb. We know that this is not the end of the story. There are still other events to be fulfilled. But we will have to wait until we get to Pentecost for that final chapter of Luke's narrative.

Like the Mass this weekend, our own journey through life can have its ups and downs. We can be filled with joy one moment and saddled with grief at another. Our Lord and Savior experienced the same. As a human person like us he had joyous times and sad ones as well. The same holds true for those eyewitnesses who Luke speaks of in the introduction to his Gospel. The ones who were with Jesus from the beginning also knew both sorrow and joy. They persisted in the faith, handing down the story of Christ to our day. And in our joys and in our sorrows we pass on the faith as well.

Right to Life-LIFESPAN—Doritos Sees Life! During the Super Bowl, the Frito-Lay company ran an ad showing the ultra sound image of a baby (actually, the son of the creator of the ad) engineered to appear to reach for a Dorito Chip his father was eating. Cute and clever, right. Not if you believe in abortion. Abor-tion supporters condemned the ad, saying it “humanized” the unborn child. Well gee, what else is that pre-born baby it if not human? It is so annoying when scientific fact gets in the way of someone’s agenda! For more information, please call the LIFE-SPAN office, 248-816-1546.

St. Augustine Lenten Almsgiving Spotlight

Steubenville Youth Conference 2015

Steubenville Conferences, an outreach of Franciscan University of Steubenville, have served hundreds of thousands of Catholics across North America since 1975. In the spirit of St. Francis, their mission is “Go, Rebuild My Church.” Steubenville Conferences invite youth, young adults and adults into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ, empower them for discipleship, and equip them for the work of the New Evangelization. Each summer, tens of thousands accept this invitation to grow in their Catholic faith through inspiring talks, dynamic worship and profound encounters with Christ in the Eucharist and Reconciliation.

Part of our alms collected this Lent will help defray the cost for the youth of our parish to attend this dynamic conference.

Currently the Center serves 200 seniors a day, 7 days a week which amounts to over 55,000 meals annually. The sharing, caring and loving community of St. Patrick Health and Wellness Center empowers the elderly to live independently with happiness through programs of education, health, and socialization, and gives lasting support and dignity to the equality of life.

Wine Tasting Wrap-Up

A huge thank you to everyone that joined us for the St. Augustine School Wine Tasting! The event was held at Sage Creek Winery in Memphis and we had a fabulous time! We tasted nine wines, ate delicious treats including chocolate covered strawberries donated by Mrs. Irene Kaltz, raffled off prizes, and joined in a 50/50 raffle. A big thank you to Mrs. Ellen Basmaji for donating her winning portion of the 50/50 back to the school! Sage Creek Winery also made a very generous

donation to our cause! A good time was had by all and in the end, we made $880 to put towards the Auction Start-Up Fund!

As is our tradition, we also unveiled this year’s theme for our annual dinner auction at the wine tasting. Please join us on Friday, October 21st at Maniaci’s Banquet Center for St. Augustine’s Speakeasy: A Prohibition Party! It’s a little bit flapper, a little bit gangster, and a whole lot of 1920’s fun! We hope to see you all there!

THIRD GRADE HAPPENINGS

On Thursday, February 4th, the third graders at St. Augustine Catholic School were invited to celebrate the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools’ Week Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. They received this invitation because they obtained the highest score of the ninety-four Archdiocesan elementary schools on the Archdiocesan Religion Test taken back in October. At the end of Mass, our class was presented with a certificate of achievement. This is the second year in a row that the third graders have received this honor. Upon returning to school, the students were treated to a special lunch.

Earlier in the week, the third graders, along with all of the students at St. Augustine School, traveled to Holy Cross Catholic School and Church to celebrate Mass, have lunch, and participate in a variety of fun activities with all the students from the Blue Water Vicariate. A good time was had by all.

During the month of March, we are involved with many “March is Reading Month” activities. One of the favorites is the Pajama Day Afternoon read-in which was on Friday, March 11. We are also working hard to help the school reach its goal of 300 books read by the students this Month. In addition, we are collecting gently used books of all levels to be donated to literacy programs throughout the Detroit area.

As you can see, the Third Graders have been busy with many worthwhile activities the past couple months. We have lots more to look forward to through the end of this school year!
