First, he goes to her land. He does not wait for her to find him; he goes out to find her. We cannot wait for people to come to us. We must venture forth from our church to find them wherev- er they are. Then, when she approaches the well Jesus begins to talk to her. He does not wait for her to initiate a conversation. Notice that he speaks to her about what she is doing. She is going to the well and he asks her for water. He begins a discussion of water that leads to the living water. The woman wants such water, and she begins to turn toward Jesus hoping he might be able to supply it. When we engage our culture we must address it about its own concerns. We engage it in dialogue around common issues. And in that dialogue we will be able to indicate some Christian values in such a way that they might at- tract the person or group to want to know more. Like Je- sus, we are making friends and inviting people rather than arguing with them. As the dialogue goes on, Jesus demonstrates that he knows all about the woman and that he accepts her; he doesn’t reject her as her fellow townspeople have. He speaks to her of her own heritage and traditions in such a way that he shows her the way to himself. But again he leads her in such a way that she perceives an invitation to pursue her quest rather than simply feeling she is wrong and therefore at fault. The underlying tone Jesus uses throughout this dialogue is one of engagement with the person on her own level, an invitation to explore a deeper level which will bring her closer to acknowledging the Christ. Jesus’ meeting with the Samaritan woman provides a
marvelous model for evangelization. First, he goes to her
land. He does not wait for her to find him; he goes out to
find her. We cannot wait for people to come to us. We

Why is the season called Lent? Lent is the Old English word for spring. In almost all other languages, Lent’s name is a derivative of the Latin term quadragesima or “the forty days.”
Why is Lent approximately forty days long?
In the Bible, forty days is a traditional number of discipline, devotion, and preparation. Moses stayed on the mountain of God forty days (Ex. 24:18, 34:28). The spies were in the land forty days (Num. 13:25). Elijah trav-eled forty days before he reached the cave where he had his vision (1 Kgs. 19:8). Nineveh was given forty days to repent (Jonah 3:4). And, most significantly for our Lenten observance, Jesus spent forty days in wilderness pray-ing and fasting prior to undertaking his ministry (Matt. 4:2). Thus it is fitting for Christians to imitate him with a forty-day period of prayer and fasting to prepare to celebrate the climax of Christ’s ministry, Good Friday (the day of the crucifixion) and Easter Sunday (the day of the Resurrection).
