Dignitaries and members of the public all braved the cold March 2 as the Town of Strath-more celebrated the grand commissioning of the East Cal-gary Regional Waterline.

Those who have had a hand in getting the waterline in op-eration were invited to the ceremonies, including Strath-more-Brooks MLA Arno Doerk-sen, former Strathmore-Brooks MLA Dr. Lyle Oberg, Transpor-tation Minister Luke Ouellette, Environment Minister Rob Renner, Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews and Calgary Ald. Oberg said he recognized the need for water and that Strathmore was growing ‘expo-nentially’ and the water supply was not.

The Grade 4-6 students at Westmount Elementary School performed their play “A Promise is a Promise” to a packed house March 3.

Students have been pre-paring for approximately four months on the adapta-tion of Robert Munsch’s chil-dren’s book.

“It was a good story that I could add and write in a whole bunch of extra cast,” said Dana Graff, associate principal and director. “If you ever get the book and read it there’s no ravens in it or polar bears, but it’s easy for me to write them all in.”

“A Promise is a Promise” is written by Robert Munsch and is a collaboration with Inuit story-teller Michael Ku-sugak.

The story is about Allusha who, despite her mother’s warnings, wants to find the Qallupilluits, the Inuit crea-tures that live in the ocean.

Allusha goes to the edge

of the ocean to find the Qallupilluit and challenges them to catch her.

When the Qallupilluits do appear they drag Allusha be-neath the sea. They finally release her after she promis-es to bring her brothers and sisters to them.

When the Qallupilluits ap-pear at Allusha’s home, her parents help her keep her promise by distracting them while Allusha brings her brothers and sisters to the sea.

The message in the play is all about keeping your promise, and the saying “A Promise is a Promise” is spo-ken throughout the play.

“It’s has a good Native feel to it and we could then tie it into the curriculum,” said Graff.

The afternoon perfor-mance of the play invited the seniors in the commu-nity to come watch and then have snacks and coffee af-terwards with the Grade 6 students.

“It’s our way of paying

back,” said Graff. “Strath-more gives to schools in so many ways and this is our way of giving back.”

He said it is also a way of teaching kids about citizen-ship and helping others.

The kids did a great job and knew all their lines, or

most of them,” said Graff. “The choir really adds to it and that’s a great thing too.”

The choir leader was Jana Kopp. Angie Hitch, a parent, was the make-up coordina-tor and librarian Bonnie Big-ras organized the costumes.

An interim report released by the Electoral Boundar-ies Commission has rec-ommended changing the Strathmore-Brooks constitu-ency and dividing Wheat-land County into two differ-ent constituencies.

The proposed changes would see a Strathmore-Chestermere constituency and a Brooks-Drumheller constituency.

The line that divides the County would be between Gleichen and Cluny, with the Cluny area being included in the Little Bow Constituency.

The current lines have two complete countyies, Wheat-land and Newell, in the one riding.

“The way it is now, all the County is in one con-stituency riding, which is Strathmore-Brooks,” said Ben Armstrong, Reeve of Wheatland County. “We feel we have more in common

with that area and the MLA than what’s west of us.”

The County also feels the representation between ur-ban and rural is unbalanced with a ratio of two urban to one rural in the proposed boundary.

“We just feel we’d get bet-ter treatment if we’re work-ing in the area that we’re in right now,” said Armstrong

Another concern of the County is they would be dealing with two different MLA’s, something that hasn’t always worked the best in the past.

“We had trouble dealing with that issue when we were trying to deal with grant money and trying to get things done in different areas and you have to deal with two MLAs who aren’t getting along,” said Arm-strong. “It made more sense to put us all into one area.”

MLA for Strathmore-Brooks Arno Doerksen said he wouldn’t have a prob-lem adding Chestermere in

terms of representation, but understands and has heard concerns from residents about the new boundary lines.

“It’s always difficult for the people living close to the boundary lines to determine where they need to vote,” said Doerksen.

Doerksen said people un-derstand the current lines because they do contain two complete counties.

“This is an interim report and they are inviting com-ments from people,” he said. “The interim report really di-vides up those in the coun-tyies.”

Doerksen does live in the proposed Strathmore-Chestermere, but where he would run in the next elec-tion is determined through nominations.

“It’s [his home] quite cen-tral in terms of the existing Strathmore-Brooks [con-stituency], but that’s neither here or there.”

The constituency office is

currently in Brooks.The Electoral Boundaries

Commission released their interim report Feb. 24 and have made recommenda-tions on the changes to con-stituency lines after review-ing the existing electoral map of Alberta.

The changes were based on the latest census and population information and have increased the electoral divisions in Alberta from 83 to 87. There are two new constituencies in Calgary, one in Edmonton and one in Fort McMurray.

The commission is seek-ing public input through written submission until April 2. They will then have a series of public hearings from April 12 to 30 before finalizing the final boundar-ies.

A final report will then be submitted to the Legislative Assembly by July and once the document is approved it will be used in the next pro-vincial election.

The shamrock, which was also called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it

symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the

shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule.

Continued from page 1The waterline is approximately 50 ki-

lometers long and cost approximately $53 million, with the Alberta Govern-ment funding 87 per cent of that and Strathmore and Chestermere the other 13 per cent.

Many have expressed the need for the line to continue on and bring water to other residents in surrounding areas.

“There are smaller communities to the east and other municipalities that have concerns about water,” said Arno Doerk-sen. “It’s a good solution for Strathmore, and we need to continue to work on ini-tiatives to carry this on further.”

The City of Calgary doesn’t have any intentions of extending the line. Ald. Andre Chabot said their agreement with the Towns of Strathmore and Chester-mere is based on sustainable develop-ment.

When the line is pushed out to one, two or five-acre developments the tax base can’t pay for the pipes said Chabot.

“Those kinds of communities do draw extensively on the City of Calgary’s in-frastructure without contributing to the tax base, which is why the City of Calgary has always been fighting for a regional agreement where we can look at sound planning principles around de-

velopment,” said Chabot. The line has been in operation since

Jan. 18. The main difference people will notice is the taste and odor of the water, said Lattery.

“As far I can see, this water is the best water you can get anywhere, be it for drinking, bathing, cooking, what-ever, you will not find better water any-where,” Lattery added.

Also, the water treatment plant that was in Strathmore has been decommis-sioned. The water coming from Calgary will be re-chlorinated once it has arrived at Brentwood Station to make up for the chlorination lost through it’s travels.

More than 300 people attended the 16th annual Wheatland Conservation & Wildlife Association Wild Game Supper and Auction March 6 at the Civic Centre.

This is the major fundraiser for the group with tickets selling out within three days.

“It’s unreal,” said Darrel Blackley. “We get people coming to this supper from all over southern Alberta.”

The supper featured a variety of meat

including moose roast, parmesan goose, roast elk, smoked cougar and smoked wild boar just to name a few.

The walls of the Civic Centre were lined with silent auction and raffle items such as artwork, tools and fishing poles for people to bid on.

Money raised at the auction goes to-ward the association’s habitat project that centers around assisting with wild-life and species management and con-servation through education and com-munity involvement.

Some of the habitat projects the asso-ciation has worked on over the years in-clude planting and maintaining 100,000 food and shelter trees, working with area farmers to secure and fence lands for habitat preservation, and placing flax straw bales in wetlands for safe goose nesting sites.

Blackely said everything the associa-tion does is aimed at youth because they are going to be the ones here tomorrow.

“The more youth involvement the bet-ter it is for tomorrow,” he said.

The youth were very present at the dinner from members of the Junior Shooting club selling raffle tickets to the Cheadle 4-H Club serving dinner and many youth in attendance.

Awards were given out to the top hunters in different categories in the as-sociation for male, female and youth.

The association was also recognized for a number of awards they won at the Alberta Fish and Game Annual Confer-ence for their efforts in habitat preserva-tion, hunting ethics, education, pheasant programs and the dedication to youth programs.

Also at the dinner was Cody Robbins from the television show Live 2 Hunt who spoke to the crowd after dinner and had his own booth at the dinner.

“He is very well-known and was sup-

posed to be here last year, but couldn’t make it,” said Blackley.

A baby is usually the center of attention no matter where you go, but especially so in Debbie Fule’s grade five class at Brent-wood Elementary Feb. 22.

As eight-month-old Brett Young sits in the middle of the class all eyes are on him and the students are super excited anytime he comes in close contact with them dur-ing their weekly Roots of Empathy class.

“Through the use of a baby we teach the kids about empathy because babies can’t talk so the kids watch for facial ex-pressions, body language and the different cries,” said Kari Jumaga, Roots of Empathy instructor.

The program aims to help the develop-ment of empathy among students from kindergarten to grade eight.

Jumaga said the program also tries to teach kids about anti-bullying through use of a baby to teach the kids empathy.

These grade five students get the Roots of Empathy program as a part of their health curriculum.

Jumaga comes in once a week for 27 weeks to teach the kids about empathy. There are nine different themes through-out the course of the year. which are given in three week periods.

The first week introduces the class to a

topic, whether it be caring and planning, sleeping, safety or emotions.

The second week is their ‘family visit’, when baby Brett and his mother Jennifer come in to answer questions about that week’s topic.

The third week wraps up the topic. “We have a different baby for each class

because each class owns that baby for that duration,” said Jumaga.

The babies have to be between two and four months old when they start the pro-gram so the kids can see the development of the baby over the duration of the first year.

The students also track the babies’ weight and height as they grow over the year.

“This is their baby. They look after them. They love to hear about the different stages that [Brett] goes through, the new things he is able to do,” Jumaga said.

Jumaga said the students are unsure at the beginning on the year but once they get used to the program the kids are defi-nitely excited when Brett comes to visit them.

“You would think the girls would be more prone to going towards the baby,” said Jumaga. “All the boys are just ecstatic when Brett comes up to them and laughs with them.”

Fule said she has noticed a change in

her students since the Roots of Empathy has started in her classroom.

“These are life-long lessons in learning compassion for others and I’m postivie this will help these children become better citizens in their own communities,” Fule said.

“It is a powerful anti-bullying program that involves students interacting with a local instructor and local families.”

Fule said it is important to create a safe and caring environment in schools and believes the Roots of Empathy program is doing just that.

She also said the lessons the children are taught in Roots of Empathy transfers over into other parts of their curriculum such as math and language arts.

There are five different Roots of Empa-thy classes in Strathmore right now, two grade five classes at Westmount, a grade five class at Brentwood, a kindergarten class at Trinity Lutheran Academy and a grade one class at Sacred Heart.

There are different curriculums offered for different grade levels.

“We’re hoping it will carry on with them throughout their lives, being more empa-thetic towards each other and more under-standing,” said Jumaga.

The Roots of Empathy program is not only offered across Canada, but also in New Zealand and the United States.

As the 2010 Olympics have now concluded, I would like to congratulate Team Canada and Alberta’s athletes for their con-tributions to our success. Par-ticipation at this level of com-petition requires dedication and perseverance over many years. We can all be proud of what has been achieved by partici-pants and organizers in bring-ing the Vancouver Olympics to the world stage. I also want to extend best wishes on behalf of the Strathmore-Brooks constitu-ency to the athletes in the up-coming Paralympic Games.

The ability to compete suc-cessfully is also a key aspect of ensuring the economic future of our province. As we start the new session of the Legislature, the focus is on strengthening the partnership between busi-ness, industry and government through the introduction of Bill 1, the Alberta Competitiveness Act. The importance of estab-lishing a climate for business that encourages investment and limits red tape is something I well appreciate from my experi-ence in agriculture. A top pri-ority in this regard is making sure that federal, provincial and municipal regulations strike the right balance. While some stan-dards are appropriately reflected in law, it is equally important to let the market (not government) establish any need for specifica-tions that exceed this threshold. In this way we can be certain that the effort and investment made by industry will be re-warded. Any other approach can add significant cost making it more difficult for sectors to com-pete in the global marketplace.

Bill 1 sets the tone for a sys-tematic examination of our regu-latory framework and the role of government in business. From my perspective, it will be vital to consider these factors in both the domestic and international context. Our province has es-tablished a strong presence in markets around the world with exports of goods and services more than tripling between 1998 and 2008 to approximately $120 billion. All of this depends on our ability to ensure businesses in Alberta are, at minimum, on a level playing field with com-petitors. As the saying goes “the only thing constant in life is change” and for this reason we need a system of meaning-ful benchmarks that will enable us to evaluate Alberta’s position over time. These benchmarks should be communicated to all Albertan’s so that we can work together to enhance our com-petitiveness and productivity. Certainly the adoption of new technology will be key in this re-gard and was considered in the development of Bill 1.

As we move forward, Bill 1 will involve consultation with repre-sentatives of the various sectors of the Alberta economy around how our competitiveness can be enhanced. Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to provide a response to the Throne Speech on behalf of the residents of our constituency. I shared with the Premier and the members of the Legislature the importance of the competiveness review to sectors such as energy and ag-riculture which employ signifi-cant numbers of individuals in our Strathmore-Brooks constitu-ency. It is encouraging that Bill 1 seeks to establish the current state of Alberta’s competitive-

ness and to recommend further actions that can be taken by gov-ernment, industry and business. In this regard, I know there are perspectives within our commu-nities that need to be brought forward as part of this process. To facilitate this you can share your thoughts by responding to the Constituency Consulta-tion on my website at www.Ar-noDoerksen.ca. If you prefer, you can also contact my office to provide this information. The feedback I have received since becoming your MLA has indicat-ed to me the high priority you assign to this area and I will con-tinue to communicate this in the Legislature.

Arno Doerksen will be hold-ing a number of public meetings this month. Since being elected in March 2008, MLA Doersken has met with many individuals and groups in the constituency over issues from health care, deficit spending, energy, senior’s care and the economy. With Constituency Week upcoming at the end of March, Doerksen would like the opportunity to hear from constituents.

Meetings will be held:-March 29, at the Rosemary

Recreation Centre at 10 a.m. and the Rolling Hills Community Hall, Multipurpose Room at 2 p.m.

-March 30, at the Hussar Se-nior Sundowners Centre at 9:30 a.m., Rockyford Village Office at 2 p.m. and Travelodge in Strath-more at 7 p.m.

-March 31, at the Brooks Heri-tage Inn at 7 p.m.

Constituents are encouraged to attend any of these public meetings.

For more information contact the Strathmore-Brooks Constitu-ency Office at (403) 362-6969.

When you walk into Combs n’ Curls it is like any other hair and es-thetics salon, patrons are getting their hair cut and washed.

Courtney-Tyler Albig is preparing her client Lori Roes hair to get dyed and really looks confident in what she is getting ready to do.

However, close behind are her teachers watch-ing closely over Albig be-cause she is still learning her cosmetology skills.

Combs n’ Curls is the salon run out of Strath-more High School and the hair dressers and es-theticians are students learning skills.

Each year students like Albig get the opportunity to practice their skills on clients.

“It’s nice to do a lot of hands on work be-cause you can read and read and read and never know anything,” said Al-big. “When you work on a real person you learn so much more.”

Students who take cos-metology at Strathmore High School begin learn-ing the basic skills in grade 10 and then start taking clients in grade 11 and 12.

Albig, who has taken six cosmetology classes at the school, said she has always enjoyed doing hair and knowing you can help change someone’s feelings about themselves just by doing their hair.

She is thrilled at the opportunity she gets at Strathmore High School to take these classes and work on clients.

She also said its good practice for what it’s go-ing to be like when work-

ing in a real salon.“It’s nice to learn how

to talk to people, so your’re not just standing there doing their hair and feeling awkward,” said Albig.

Combs n’ Curls offers hair cuts, dying, high-lights, lowlights, mani-cures, pedicures, make-up, waxing and eye lash and eye brow tinting at reduced rates.

Teacher Cheryl David-son said they get quite a few people in to keep them busy, but because the classroom is smaller they can’t hold too many people.

“They talk their friends into it and moms, grand-mas, people they work with to come in,” said Da-vidson.

Davidson said the stu-dents begin practice on mannequins, but until the students start working on people they don’t really

understand all the skill that it takes.

“Every head of hair is a new challenge and pres-ents its own difficulties and challenges,” said Da-vidson. “You get to learn from every head of hair.”

Davidson, along with Louise Leptich, a licensed cosmetologist, and Jea-nette Greep, a teacher and licensed stylist, are always close by to step in and help when they are needed.

“We always see suc-cess,” said Davidson. “It’s fun when you can step back and say ‘look what I did.’”

Those students who take cosmetology can also use every credit they earn at Strathmore High School and put it towards 25 hours at an accredited university.

“Really what it gives them is an opportunity to learn, if this is something they want to go into,” said

Davidson. “But more than anything it gives them self-confidence.”

roAd BAnninGWheatland County decided to ban

one raod at their March 2 meeting be-cause of heavy trucks damaging roads.

The only road that was ban is located near Carseland, but some roads north, west and east of Strathmore are being monitored.

“They are going to be monitoring them if they show excess wear beyond what is normal when the thaw starts coming out,” said Reeve Ben Armstrong.

There will not be a county-wide ban, but haulers will only be allowed to car-ry 50 per cent of their load.

“If you want to haul half your load than I guess you can, but there’s no pay in that,” Armstrong said.

He said the ban shouldn’t last long, but will continue through the spring thaw because that is when the roads take a beating. The ban gives them a chance to stiffen.

If they need to put a ban on a road,

Armstrong must sign off on it and it will come into effective the next morning. It will not occur during the day.

AreA structure PlAn, Growth mAnAGement study

The Growth Management Study and Area Structure Plan for Rosebud and Nightingale are under way after the county opened the proposals they re-ceived.

The Growth Management Study is happening so the county can determine where reasonable growth can occur in the county.

The Area Structure Plan deals with the development that is occurring with-in the hamlets of Rosebud and Night-ingale.

“The area structure plan will go in there, take the boundaries of those two areas and give us a plan of how the growth can happen there so that it’s regulated, control and makes sense,” said Armstrong.

He said developers are going into these communities and rather each of

them trying to come up with their in-dividual plans the county is coming up with the plan.

“When they go in and develop than they fit within that and have to follow the regulations. It’s the same as the area west of Strathmore for the industrial growth,” said Armstrong.

The county sent out 21 proposals to companies they thought would be in-terested, with five sending in their own proposal for the Area Structure Plan and six for the Growth Management Study.

The planning department will now go through the proposals and make recom-mendations to the councilors.

The county hopes to have the study completed by the end of September.

GrAvel PolicyAfter a number of unsettled bills for

gravel a decision has been made in re-gards to how ratepayers will be able to get gravel from the County.

A pre-pay system will now be in place for anyone looking for gravel. This has changed from the previous policy

where ratepayers could just call up the loader and pay later for gravel.

“I hate to see that we have to do that way,” said Armstrong. “We just have too many outstanding gravel bills from rate payers that are saying ‘I didn’t receive that gravel’ or ‘I can’t remember getting those.’”

Ratepayers will now have to come to the County office and pre-pay for the load of gravel they want.

Each load of gravel will require one ticket, which will be given to the loader at the site.

Haulers will have to know how much a load they want because tickets will be marked with how much gravel they will be receiving.

Each ratepayer is able to have 400 tones of gravel per year.

Armstrong understands that some ratepayers will be unhappy having to pre-pay, but that bad debts have forced them to do this.

“Now it’s not going to be that easy to run over and get it. They have to pre-pay for it and get a ticket,” he said.

The federal budget was re-leased March 4 and the gov-ernment has implemented the second year of the Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The government has stated they will continue to protect and create jobs and provide a three-point plan to reduce the federal budgetary deficit.

“This budget will solidify Can-ada’s recovery from the global economic crisis, keep the focus on jobs and help create a Cana-da where business can grow, in-novate and prosper,” said Kevin Sorenson, MP for Crowfoot in a news release.

Sorenson said the federal bud-get will help local businesses. For example, he said the gov-

ernment will continue to work with the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and is helping pro-vide cattle processing facilities in Alberta with $75 million to support investments and help improve their operations.

Also, the government will help support the operation of the Canadian Grain Commis-sion over the next two years with $51.7 million in funding.

The budget also confirmed $19 billion in new federal stim-ulus that flows from last year’s decision to not introduce new spending and it will keep Can-ada’s economy ‘on track’ said Sorenson.

The government also stated they will cut the deficit nearly in half in two year and by two-thirds in three years.

“We will not cut spending on

health care, education or sup-port for seniors,” said Sorenson. “Rather, we will be finishing the stimulus spending and com-mence restraining government spending through targeted mea-sures and launching a compre-hensive review of government spending on administration and overhead.”

Sorenson said the budget will help continue Canada’s eco-nomic recovery and prepares the country for the future. He said he was confident the oppo-sition will pass the budget.

The Throne Speech, delivered March 3, also spoke of the Ca-nadian government’s commit-ment to modernizing the Cana-dian Grain Act, providing the freedom of choice for Western Barley producers and ending the gun registry.

Mad Science timeThe Strathmore and District Child Development Society brought in Lightning Leah to entertain some as-piring young scientists during the Mad Science extravaganza Feb. 28 at the Hope Community Church. Amber Link, a volunteer with the Society expressed her regret that this will more than likely be their last event. The Society was started in the 1980’s by a group of Moms who wanted affordable learning experiences for their children. They have had a lot of fun over the years, but unfortunately with the rise in the cost of entertainers and the decrease in attendance and volunteers, they may have no choice but to call it quits. Lighting Leah also demonstrated how different chemicals will change colour when burnt. Wendi Tashlikowich Photo

HCC boy’s basketball wins banner over CrowtherAmy GreGsonTimes Reporter

It was a close game for Holy Cross Collegiate and Crowther Memorial’s senior boys basket-ball teams as they battled for the league banner in their last league game March 4.

The teams were tied neck and neck until the fourth quarter when HCC pulled ahead to win the Gold-en Hills South Division.

“It was a great game and Crowther is a very tough oppo-nent, but our guys played hard,” said Michael Annicchiarico, coach. “We don’t have a lot of banners so hopefully we can change that in the coming years.”

This is the first banner for the basketball team at the school.

“It’s been a great year. Our record is something like 17-5 so we’re re-ally happy,” said Annicchiarico. “We just want to continue to improve our school’s athletics program.”

A big difference in the game was HCC player Daniel O’Leary, who hit a number of three pointer shots throughout the game and whom Annicchiarico said is one of the top players on the team.

“He’s a bigger guy. He can take

it down low. He’s a good ball han-dler and he’s very good at shooting the three [pointers],” said Annicchi-arico.

However, he said his whole team stepped up and it wasn’t just one or two players.

“It was great to see,” Annicchi-arico said.

Crowther head coach Troy Filipi-onek said it was a great even game and thought his team played well.

“They made big shots and we just missed too many,” said Filipi-onek.

The season has been up and down for Crowther’s team, said Filipionek, with some really great moments and some really down moments.

Filipionek said three players have stood out this year on the team: Cory Campbell, Joey Doig and David Kuljanin.

“They’re the three guys with experience. They’re my captains,” said Filipionek. “They’ve all played and set a good example for the rest of the boys.”

There are six teams in the Gold-en Hills South Division, two from HCC, two from Crowther and one each from Standard and Siksika.

Crowther girls take top spotAmy GreGsonTimes Reporter

In a season that their coach describes as up and down, the Crowther Memo-rial girls basketball team ended with a bang.

The girls captured the Golden Hills South Divi-sion and also won their last game of the season against Siksika Nation High School March 3.

“It feels really good,” said coach Scott Koller.

This year’s team was young, said Koller, with only one Grade 9, five Grade 8’s and seven Grade 7’s.

“We’re playing against teams that are usually Grade 9 girls,” said Koller. “We didn’t win all of them,

but we’ve been close just about every game we’ve played.”

He said the team has re-ally come together from the first game of the season and that it’s been a lot of fun.

“Our first game I thought, ‘oh, we’re in for a long sea-son,’ and now we’re kicking butt everywhere,” he said.

Koller said a standout player from this year’s team was starting point guard Jade Ballence, who was the high scorer and ran the of-fensive while on the court.

“She’s the heart and soul of our team,” said Koller. “It would be hard to have a team like this without her.”

The team’s final tourna-ment of the season was in zones on March 6 and 7 in Olds.

The girl’s basketball team at Crowther Memorial Jr. High received their banner March 3 after finishing in the top spot in the Golden Hills South Division. Crowther Memorial and Siksika Nation High School girl’s basketball teams faced off against each other in the final league game of the season. Crowther edged out Siksika by a score of 22-6. The First ParadeThe first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not in Ireland but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched

through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as

fellow Irishmen serving in the English army. In 1848, several New York Irish Aid societies decided to unite their parades to form one New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Today, that parade is the world’s oldest

civilian parade, with over 150,000 participants.

Skating through the centuryAmy GreGsonTimes Reporter

For their annual carnival this year, the Gleichen Figure Skating Club will be celebrating 100 years of skating in their community.

The theme of the night will be skating through the century with each group skating to a different era in history.

“We have some good history,” said Cindy Bolinger, president of the skating club. “It’s a small little town, but we’ve got a lot of history to celebrate.”

The 34 skaters from the club vary in age from three to those who have grad-uated from high school.

There will be seven groups skating to themes such as pioneers, roaring 20s and disco that represent the different

music and dances from cer-tain decades.

“We have some flapper dresses and one boy dressed up as a gangster, so they’re all really excited about that stuff,” said Bolinger. “It’s been fun to go through and grab a fun area from each decade to focus on.”

Bolinger said it’s also been fun to see the differences in skating through the years.

The coach and assistant coaches of the figure skating club are choreographing the performances.

“The older girls will be do-ing the performances they will be doing in competitions later in the year and that they’ve already done some competitions as well,” said Bolinger.

The show happens March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Gleichen arena. Tickets are available at the door for $2, which also enters you in for door prizes.

There will also be a birth-day cake at the end of the event to celebrate 100 years of skating.

Everyone is welcome.

Ringette Try OutThe Strathmore Minor Ringette Association held their Annual Come Try-it event at the Family Centre Feb. 26. There were about 18 players who showed up to try out the sport, which included different drills such as passing, shooting and skating. An information session was also held for parents. Showering just prior to tanning will clear the skin of any potential barriers that might hinder the tan. Applying a tanning lotion right after a shower will help the lotion absorb more readily into the skin and prepare it for the tan. The exception is with lotions that make your skin heat up and “tingle”—proximity to the tanning session time is a little more critical with those lotions. Ideally, you should wait a few hours after tanning to take a shower. The reason: Skin takes a while to process the light that it has received into a tan. Taking a shower right after a tan won’t eliminate the tan altogether, but it will minimize the total impact of that individual session.

Varsity Girls Basketballs wins league in dramatic fashionstrathmore high schoolSubmitted

The Strathmore High School Varsity Girls Basketball team beat High River in the Foothills Basketball League Champi-onship in High River on Saturday March 6. The most amazing thing was not that they beat the Highwood Mustangs (cur-rently ranked #7 in the province) by a score of 72-70, but how they beat them.

Strathmore came to the Champion-ship Game missing two starters to the Provincial Ringette Tournament in Leduc and one sprained ankle. With a squad of seven players (and one that should not have played because of ill-ness), Strathmore took to the floor with a monumental task; trying to beat a team that went undefeated in league play including two wins against our own Strathmore Spartans by a com-bined total of 50 points.

After the first quarter, Strathmore was up by a score of 15-9. Stella Lopez de Freitas was able to make four key three-point shots not to mention help break

the press all game long. Ra-chel Warrack and Irina Li-akhar played tough defense on their two key players and keeping to the game plan, Strathmore continued to in-crease their lead, ending the first half with a flurry of shots and layups. After 20 minutes of play, the Spartans were up by a score of 40-22.

Highwood came out strong in the third quarter and chipped away at the lead and were only down by seven go-ing into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, with only sev-en players, foul trouble be-came an issue and Highwood took advantage.

Early on in the fourth quarter and holding on to a four point lead, Rachel War-rack fouled out. However Megan Bradley stepped in and played some great de-fense. But with just over five minutes to go, Megan Brad-ley fouled out and on came Kirsten Barret, who had a key steal and a layup at the end of the game. With 3:22 to go, Felica Jerry who was playing excellent defense, fouled out.

With a team of seven play-ers and three fouled out, Strathmore had to finish the game with four players. It was an exciting and pressure

filled final quarter with the game tied six times, High-wood taking the lead at 62-60, and the rest of the time Strathmore lead.

Even though Strathmore finished with only four play-ers on the court, they played like there were six. “It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen in a basket-ball game. Everyone one of the seven girls played with heart and desire… you just can’t teach that.” added Coach Dion Galandy. Of the four playing at the end of the game, two of them had four fouls.

With 20 seconds to go, up by one and with four per-sonal fouls, Irina Liakhar stole the ball and made a la-yup to put Strathmore up by three points. It was one of her 20 points of the second half. Coach Galandy said “Af-ter 15 years of coaching, that was the gutsiest play I have ever seen.” Jenna Campbell played a great game on the boards and had some key blocked shots especially at the end of the game. After playing some great team de-fense to take time off the clock, Highwood made their shot giving Strathmore con-trol of the ball up by one

point. Highwood fouled with three seconds to go and Stella made one of two free-throws to put them up 72-70. High-wood missed a desperation shot to finish the game giving the victory to Strathmore.

Previously, the Varsity Boys had won the Goldenhills Bas-ketball League in 2001 and 2005 and the girls also in 2005. This is Strathmore’s first banner for winning in the highly competitive Foot-hills Basketball League.

Next for the Varsity Girls is zones. Because the South Central Zone is one of the most competitive in the prov-ince, it will be not be easy to get one of the two births to provincials. They will face Olds, Brooks (currently ranked #3 in the province), Springbank (ranked #5) and High River. The South Central Zone will be played March 10-13 with games in Olds, Brooks and at the SAIT campus.
