Ovidio Ruiz, Jr. Blasted 300
At Rockaway Lanes
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –
Bill O’Neill of
Southampton, Pa., who
earned a “can’t miss” tag
after his 2005-06
Professional Bowlers
Association Rookie of the
Year season, cruised past
defending champion
Mike Scroggins of
Amarillo, Texas, 267-207,
to win his first major title
in the 67th U.S. Open at
Woodland Bowl.
O’Neill, who won his
first PBA Tour title earlier
this season in Detroit, had
a spare in the first frame,
failed to convert the 2-10
split in the second, and
then threw 10 strikes in a
row to race away to victo-
ry. Along with his title, he
earned $60,000 and a three-year PBA
Tour exemption.
“This title means everything to me.
I can’t begin to explain it,” he said.
“It’s the most difficult title on tour to
win. To have my name up there with
the guys who have won it is amazing.”
“I can’t believe I bowled a game
like that on this lane condition,” the
28-year-old O’Neill said. “I found a
little hold area and that’s all I needed.
It was just a matter of bearing down
and making good shots. It was the
most relaxed I’ve ever been on TV.
Scroggins never found a solid line to
the pocket, failing to put two strikes
together until the 10th frame. But it was
a pocket 7-10 split in the eighth
frame that clinched the win for
O’Neill.
“At the start of the match,
my thumb shrunk just a bit and
I was afraid to add a piece of
tape because I didn’t want to
hang up in the ball,” Scroggins
said. “I was losing it just
enough, so when I put the tape
in the ball in the seventh
frame, I got back to the pocket.
“But Bill bowled well. All of
the strikes looked the same, so
you know he was throwing the
ball well,” Scroggins added.
“It’s hard to beat 267 on an
easy condition, let alone the
U.S. Open oil pattern.”
O’Neill earned his berth in
the title match by defeating
Tommy Jones of
Simpsonville, S.C., 203-152,
after Jones romped past Jason Couch
of Clermont, Fla., 245-192, in the
opening match. In the first game,
Jones threw seven strikes in the first
eight frames to win easily, but when
the oil began to move, he got lost
against O’Neill, leaving and failing
to convert four splits.

fect with a 299 game and finished

GARDEN CITY, NY: The
LIGBT crowned two new cham-
pions while breaking a one-day
entry record for the club at AMF
Garden City. Mike Mullin of
Congers, NY earned $1,000 and
his first LIGBT scratch title. The
handicap title, with its $650 top
prize, went to Vincent Baliski of
Elmhurst, NY.
A total of 174 bowlers compet-
ed in the Garden City event on
the PBA Cheetah Pattern and the
scoring was playable but on the
low side. It only took a 209 aver-
age in the 49 & under scratch division to advance
while a 191 average in the senior division got you
into the finals.
Mike Mullin’s title had to wait until the last ball of
the tournament. Joey Serripico, Lindenhurst, NY was
the qualifying leader with a 953 four game series and
was seeded into the final shootout. Joey needed all 3
strikes in the tenth frame to tie Mike and force a roll-
off but a stubborn 7 pin, on what looked to be a per-
fect shot, gave Mike the title and Joey a second place
finish ($750.) The final score in the shootout was
Mike Mullin- 217, Joey Serripico- 216, and finishing
third was the high senior bowler
Tim Regan of E. Northport, NY
who shot a 199 and earned $500.
The 210 and under handicap
event had an incredible turnout
of 101 bowlers which meant 25
would advance to the finals.
Vince Baliski got to the winner’s
circle in style by shooting a 294
game (267 scratch!) Vince’s day
almost ended in the first round of
the finals as he just squeaked in
with a 198 which was the cut
score. Finishing second was
LIGBT loyalist Damon Gizzi of
St. James, NY who earned $350 with a 236, 58 pins
behind the champion. Rounding out the four man
shootout was third place finisher Joe Hoenig of East
Meadow 198 ($300) and Alex Padmore of Jamaica,
NY who earned $250 with a 181 game.
The LIGBT has two more events scheduled in
March; Cozy Bowl (Queens) on Sunday, March 14th
(2pm) and AMF Sayville on Sunday, March 21st
(2pm). For more information on the LIGBT, and
complete results of the AMF Garden City event,

O’Neill, Wes Malott, Norm Duke, Mike Scroggins, Walter Ray Williams
Jr., Brad Angelo, Pete Weber, Mike Fagan, defending Japan Cup cham-
pion Patrick Allen, Tommy Jones, Ryan Shafer, Sean Rash, Mika
Koivuniemi, Parker Bohn III and Chris Loschetter
Every four years I have to express my perplexity at some of the sup-
posed sports that are included in the winter Olympics while bowling
has continuously gotten shunned. Bowling made it in one time as a
“demonstration sport” and even the non-bowling athletes enjoyed
going to the lanes and bowling for fun and relaxation.
But now there is curling. And as of 1998 in Nagano it’s a medal
sport. What the heck is that? I watched it from my dentist’s chair and it
was more painful than the stuff going on with my teeth. The crowd
cheering, the sweepers sweeping and the “innings” known as “ends.” I
guess I just didn’t get it. Spittoons and brooms. One positive note: I
would like to hire some of those sweepers to grab a Swiffer and do my
hardwood floors.
And “they” say that bowling isn’t a sport. One of the numerous crite-
ria for a sport to get into the Olympics is “international appeal.” It has
to be available to as many countries as possible. The Jamaican bob-
sled team notwithstanding, bowling is in countries I never heard of and
can hardly pronounce. Tim Mack has bowled on six of seven conti-
nents. Now that shows international availability to me.
All of the other winter sports surely look like sports to me. There is
speed and endurance, excitement and drama. But watching curling
even put my cat to sleep. Maybe I should have been drinking to enjoy
the full magnitude of this tough competition.
I’ve had my winter Olympic rant and you won’t have to read it again
for four more years. But wait until the summer Olympics come
around. Did someone say rhythmic gymnastics?

FAIRLAWN, NJ - It took him half a sea-
son, but Holiday Bowl I’s Rob Andresen
has reached the coveted “200” average
mark by smashing his way to 259-696 in
Sunday morning’s Stan Niemiec Youth
Travel League action at Fair Lawn. With
the Kattine brothers Kyle and Ryan chip-
ping in with 214-613 and 243-592 respec-
tively, Holiday Bowl I snared two of three
games from sister entry Holiday Bowl II.
The latter had solid outings from the
Landau boys as Kyle lifted his average to
203 by scoring 257-656 while Ryan added
219-610; teammate Colette Malyack con-
tributed a 198 in Holiday Bowl II’s sole
win.
Bobby McCarthy rolling 235-621, Brian
O’Flaherty 244-620 and Nick Rossi 222-
597 produced more than enough firepower
to turn back Fair Lawn I, 2668-2599.
Deuces for Fair Lawn I came from Simon
Lezaja 216, Isiah Tolbert 214 and Marla
Auslander 200; Marla’s 569 set was an
impressive 122 pins over her threesome
average although short of her best set; ear-
lier this season, she rolled an astounding
162 sticks above average series which will
be difficult to surpass.
Elsewhere, Montvale I benefited from
season-high scores from 13-year-old Greg
Khan 212-561 and 15-year-old Cassidy
Fiore 210-586 in taking two games from
Bowler City. Anchor Brian Galbraith
closed with 215 and Diane Kalman bowled
fifteen pins over average to help their
younger mates to a team best 1014. For
Bowler City, Ray Geller had an opening
game 219, Stacy Fernandez a pair of 192
singles and 11-year-old David Grant two
fine scores of 173,168.
Maggie Schultz came through with over-
average efforts of 149,152 and Jake Rollins
added 214-603 to carry Fair Lawn II to a
three-game 2467 total, good enough to earn
the team all seven points.
