The First Sunday of Lent March 1, 2020

General Maintenance and Repair position available at St. Justin. Full time.

There is a full time position available for a maintenance and repair per-son at St. Justin Parish. The general maintenance and repair staff will be re-sponsible for the general upkeep of the parish facilities at St. Justin and Sacred Heart Mission. It requires knowledge of plumbing and electrical repair. It will require ordering supplies for the church, receiving deliveries, set up and take down for some events, recognizing hazards and being proactive in correcting them, and some outside cleaning of both properties. The person will need to be familiar with safe use of power tools and equipment. Also, the person will need to recognize when it is appropriate to bring in professionals for repairs, schedule the repair work, and ensure the work is done properly. Must have valid Califor-nia Driver’s License.

Applications are available in the Parish Office. Those interested must submit an application and resume to the Parish Office or to our

business manager at LSardagna@saintjustin.org .

Do you like to knit or crochet? Blankets needed.

Members of our Prayer Shawl Ministry knit or crochet items for those who are ill. The items are blessed and given out on the first Saturday of each month at 8:15 a.m., just before the 8:30 a.m. Mass during which the Anointing of the Sick is given. While our volunteers are making the items, they pray for the person who will be receiving it.

Yarn is provided, or you can use your own. You can use your own patterns. There are no time limits or deadlines, just do what you can when you can. The group usually meets once a month on the third Thursday. If you can’t make it to the meeting just bring your completed items or donations of yarn to the Parish Office. Introduction to the Bible

The Bible is a library of 73 books written over a period of a thousand years in a culture very different from our own. In our three sessions we will explore how the Catholic Church approach-es and interprets Scripture, how the canon of the Bible was formed and how to meditate and pray with the Scriptures. The sessions will be presented by Fr. John Monestero. The book we will be us-ing is "Introduction to the Bible" by William A. Anderson.

Join us from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. on Thursdays March 12, 19, and 26, in the Hope Room.

Please note that the book "Introduction to the Bible" is required for the class. Books will be available

TODAY'S READINGS First Reading --The man and the woman ate the fruit

of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7).

Psalm — Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51).

Second Reading — Death reigned from Adam to Mo-ses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]).

Strength against Temptation The first Sunday of the season of Lent al-ways includes a Gospel account of the tempta-tion of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temp-tation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. under the shelter.

Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession) is God’s gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confession we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. Stations of the Cross, also called Way of the Cross, is a devotion to recall and represent the events from Jesus’ passion and death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to pray and reflect on the day that Je-sus died. The series of 14 events depicted in the stations are: (1) Jesus is condemned to death, (2) he is made to bear his cross, (3) he falls the first time, (4) he meets his mother, (5) Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross, (6) Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, (7) he falls the second time, (8) the women of Jerusalem weep over Jesus, (9) he falls the third time, (10) he is stripped of his garments, (11) he is nailed to the cross, (12) he dies on the cross, (13) he is taken down from the cross, and (14) he is placed in the sepulcher (tomb).

Some experience the stations as a mini pilgrimage, moving from station to station. This devotion may be done individually or as a group. At each station we recall and meditate on a specific event. Prayers are recited (St. Justin’s has prayer booklets for you to use), then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete. At St. Justin’s the stations are hung on the east and west walls of the nave of the church. During Lent we installed 14 tall wood crosses along the walkway between the church and the rectory, representing each of the stations. You may choose to pray the stations inside or outside.

The devotional exercise of visiting and praying in front of each of the 14 stations and meditating on the Passion of Christ stems from the practice of early Christian pilgrims who visited the scenes of the events in Jerusalem and walked the traditional route from the supposed location of Pilate’s house to Calvary.

The 2:15 p.m. stations at St. Justin are led by the St. Justin School stu-dents. The 7 p.m. stations are led by a different parish group each week. Thank you to the English Faith Formation team for leading the February28th stations, and to the Filipino community for leading the March 6th stations.

ABSTINENCE

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on all Fri-days of Lent. Those age 18-60 are to also fast on Good Friday.

Muchas gracias a nuestros voluntarios en el Miércoles de Ceniza Muchas, muchas gracias a todos nuestros voluntarios que ayudaron el

Miércoles de Ceniza. Es siempre uno de los días más ocupados de todo el año. Ayudaron con las liturgias en la iglesia y en el salón miembros de Hospitalidad, Lectores, Ministros de la Eucaristía, Monaguillos, Sacristanes y coros. Un agradecimiento especial a los que trabajaron afuera, ayudando a dirigir a las personas, el estacionamiento y el tráfico. En verdad que por su ayuda todo fue en orden y con seguridad. Gracias a todos por su dedicación a nuestra parroquia.

Colección para la Electricidad, 7/8 de marzo Habrá segunda colecta en estos próximos fines de semana para ayudar a cubrir los

costos de electricidad de nuestra parroquia.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Primera lectura — Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y ambos se dieron cuenta de que

estaban desnudos. (Génesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7). Salmo — Ten piedad, Señor, porque somos pecadores (Salmo 51 [50]). Segunda lectura — Una sola trasgresión acarreó sentencia de muerte para todos,

pero la rehabilitación merecida por uno solo, obtuvo perdón y vida para todos (Romanos 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]).

Misericordia, Señor, Hemos Pecado Cuaresma, un camino hacia la Pascua. Cuaresmas es un periodo de cuarenta días

de preparación para la Pascua, solemnidad que constituye el centro de todas las cele-braciones del año litúrgico; de hecho, el ministerio de la muerte y resurrección de Jesus, por una parte, es el acontecimiento culminante y supremo de su existencia terrena; por otra parte, es el fundamento de nuestra fe, la fuente de donde brota toda nuestra vida cristiana.

Génesis 2, 7-9; 3, 1-7 Después de haber creado el cielo y la tierra, el Señor Dios tomó polvo del suelo

y con él formó al hombre; le sopló en la nariz un aliento de vida, y el hombre comen-zó a vivir. Después plantó el Señor un jardín al oriente del Edén y allí puso al hombre que había formado. El Señor Dios hizo brotar del suelo toda clase de árboles, de her-moso aspecto y sabrosos frutos, y además, en medio del jardín, el árbol de la vida y el árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal.

La serpiente era el más astuto de los animales del campo que había creado el Señor Dios. Un día le dijo a la mujer: “¿Es cierto que Dios les ha prohibido comer de todos los árboles del jardín?”

La mujer respondió: “Podemos comer del fruto de todos los árboles del jardín, pero del árbol que está en el centro, dijo Dios: ‘No comerán de él ni lo tocarán, porque de lo contrario, habrán de morir’ ”.

La serpiente replicó a la mujer: “De ningún modo. No morirán. Bien sabe Dios que el día que coman de los frutos de ese árbol, se les abrirán a ustedes los ojos y serán como Dios, que conoce el bien y el mal”.

La mujer vio que el árbol era bueno para comer, agradable a la vista y codicia-ble, además, para alcanzar la sabiduría. Tomó, pues, de su fruto, comió y le dio a su marido, que estaba junto a ella, el cual también comió. Entonces se les abrieron los ojos a los dos y se dieron cuenta de que estaban desnudos. Entrelazaron unas hojas de higuera y se las ciñeron para cubrirse.

Rom 5, 12-19 Hermanos: Por un solo hombre entró el pecado en el mundo y por el pecado entró la muerte, y así la muerte pasó a todos los hombres, porque todos pecaron.

En efecto, si por el pecado de un solo hombre estableció la muerte su reinado, con mucho mayor razón reinarán en la vida por un solo hombre, Jesucristo, aquellos que reciben la gracia superabundante que los hace justos.

En resumen, así como por el pecado de un solo hombre, Adán, vino la con-denación para todos, así por la justicia de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, ha venido para todos la justificación que da la vida. Y así como por la desobediencia de uno, todos fueron hechos pecadores, así por la obediencia de uno solo, todos serán hechos justos.

Evangelio Lectura del santo evangelio según san Mateo 4, 1-11

En aquel tiempo, Jesús fue conducido por el Espíritu al desierto, para ser tentado por el demonio. Pasó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches sin comer y, al final, tuvo ham-bre. Entonces se le acercó el tentador y le dijo: “Si tú eres el Hijo de Dios, manda que estas piedras se conviertan en panes”. Jesús le respondió: “Está escrito: No sólo de pan vive el hombre, sino también de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”.

Entonces el diablo lo llevó a la ciudad santa, lo puso en la parte más alta del templo y le dijo: “Si eres el Hijo de Dios, échate para abajo, porque está escrito: Man-dará a sus ángeles que te cuiden y ellos te tomarán en sus manos, para que no tropiece tu pie en piedra alguna”. Jesús le contestó: “También está escrito: No tentarás al Se-ñor, tu Dios”.

Luego lo llevó el diablo a un monte muy alto y desde ahí le hizo ver la grandeza de todos los reinos del mundo y le dijo: “Te daré todo esto, si te postras y me adoras”. Pero Jesús le replicó: “Retírate, Satanás, porque está escrito: Adorarás al Señor, tu Dios, y a él sólo servirás”.

Entonces lo dejó el diablo y se acercaron los ángeles para servirle. Palabra del Señor. R. Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

“Si el tentador, el enemigo de la luz, te asalta después del bautismo –-seguramente lo hará, pues incluso tentó al Verbo, mi Dios oculto en la carne, es decir, a la mis-ma Luz oculta por la humanidad- sabrás como vencerlo: no tengas miedo a la batalla. Oponle el agua, oponle el Espíritu contra el cual se estrellarán todos sus dardos. Si Jesús, recordándole su hambre para moverlo a transfor-mar las piedras en panes- recuerda la respuesta que le dio. Hazle saber que no aprendió la lección; oponle aquella palabra de vida, que es el pan bajado del cielo y es vida para el mundo. Si te tienta con la vanagloria –como lo hizo con Jesús al llevarlo al pináculo del templo y le dijo: “Échate para abajo”, para demostrar tu divini-dad-, no te dejes dominar por la soberbia. Si en esto te vence, seguro que no detendrá ahí: es insaciable y lo quiere todo; se muestra complaciente y de aspecto bon-dadoso, pero acaba siempre confundiendo el bien con el mal. Esa ha sido siempre su táctica. Este ladrón es un experto conocedor, incluso de la Escritura.

Pequeñas reflexiones Apuesta por la vida

Había una vez un pozo donde vivía una ranita huérfana. Era diferente a las demás, era atrevida y tenía la ilusión de explorar el mundo exterior. Brincaba y brincaba para salir del pozo, pero las demás ranas le gritaban: “Ni lo intentes, eres una perdedora, fracasarás en el intento y morirás”. Pero la negatividad y falta de apoyo del ranal sólo lograron que la ranita no se diera por vencida, ni renunciara a sus sueños. Esto la motivó a brincar con más fuerza, hasta que logró salir del pozo.

¡No fue fácil! Sin embargo, la valentía de esta atre-vida ranita la llevó a gozar las riquezas de la creación, se casó, formó una familia y vivía muy feliz. Una bella tarde de primavera, se dio cuenta que donde estaba el pozo, estaban construyendo casas. Corrió hacia el pozo con desesperación y les gritó a las ranas que aún vivían allí: “¡Ese mundo que yo soñaba existe! Salgan de ese pozo apestoso, su vida peligra; ¡el pozo será tapado y morirán! ¡Elijan la vida, luchen por ella! ¡Pero las necias ranas se aferraron a su forma de vivir y murieron!”.

Esta historia suena cruel, sin embargo, no está lejos de la realidad. Hoy en día parece que vivimos en un pozo donde casi todo huele mal, hay violencia intra-familiar, suicidios, divorcios, enfermedad, pobreza e injusticia. Mucha gente vive esclava de la depresión, muerta en vida, vacía e infeliz. Algunos piensan que la vida no vale la pena, o lo que es peor, para qué esfor-zarse si el mundo está messed-up o como se dice en español está hecho un rollo. Las personas que nos de-bieran animar y apoyar a veces nos arrebatan nuestros sueños, nuestra fe y esperanza.
