THE PROJECT

Page 5: Marcano / Maldonado art project

Contemporary Art is an active international subculture growing in number,

with inherent values which address its own conditions and variations. Con-

temporary Art, is present in everyday use as a general term in reference to

current art as a whole and the way it is perceived. It is inserted within com-

plicated exchanges between diverse cultures creating mutations capable of

generating new trends while setting them in the international high culture

realm. Contemporary art reconstructs the historical discourse concerning 20th

century art from a innovative point of view and delivers the answers about

who we are, what we think, and how we function. It is what we sell and buy,

what we incite it to do, and the interpretations we give it. Contemporary Art is

a scene with a complex structure that defines itself by a multiplicity of prac-

tices and constant promotion of its own representation that support the collu-

sion of its collective consciousness.

In our era, Contemporary Art requires both a broader analysis and rethinking

of basic forms and definitions. The workings of globalization promotes the in-

tegration, interaction and exchange of different points of view, making oper-

able to the artist his surroundings. In this present moment in history, where

direct communication is obscured by the presence of a plethora of gadgets

intended to keep ourselves connected; art is the medium to promote a more

collective awareness, aiming at a broader involvement of people in address-

ing society's changes and challenges.

Art fairs are spaces for artistic legitimization which thrive on the abundance of resources

available in the major cities of the world. With a great list of international art fairs, Art Basel

Miami and parallel offerings such as Spectrum Art Fair, provide great opportunities for

artists to be recognized, and to connect with an audience. Art fairs are indispensable pro-

motional platforms for artists and galleries. Art Basel and its parallel exhibitions and cul-

tural events connect artists with the public and the art-market, creating an exciting

environment which bolsters and solidifies relationships amongst artists, art professionals,

and collectors. With more than 2,500 artists participating at the same time in different ven-

ues, new possibilities for newness and novelty emerge. With more than 65,000 visitors,

Art Basel promises a unique experience for both artist and audience.

Art cannot speak for itself, needing a foundation for a discourse and a vehicle to foster it;

this is where Marcano Maldonado artproject enters the panorama. Under the direction of

Sharon Maldonado and José Marcano, Marcano Maldonado artproject espouses emerg-

ing and established artists by introducing them to the art world and helping to shape and

develop their careers utilizing unique strategies. MMartproject has provided art advisory

Peter Vigil

Peter Vigil confronts the everyday or provocative, socialand cultural themes that promote divergent perspec-tives and transcend collective principles. These themesencompass power, structure, excesses, sexuality, for-mality, sadness, and anger as they relate to the interre-lationship of individuals and their environment. Usingbold and vibrant colors, specifically hues of red, to pro-vide the subject a physical sense of existence and tounderscore the passion or fury inherent in interpersonaland emotional experiences. Peter creates the physicalsense of existence to increase the depth and impact ofthe experiences depicted. In a large body of his work,he uses black lines or swatches to conceptualize theconflicting and often subdued perspectives held by in-dividuals, which are at odds with conventional societaland cultural views.

José Peyo Vazquéz

Peyo Vazquez’s journey with art has been in-tense, as life itself. We can describe his work asautobiographical, expressive and intimate. Thevisceral struggles of his conscience and his spiritexposed to the canvas can be violent, cruel, mocking, sensual, or tender. Absent is the resig-nation and disdain, the artist is in constant disputewith fate, society and himself. Peyo studied at theEscuela de las Artes Plasticas in San Juan, PRand currently work in Arecibo, PR

Page 22: Marcano / Maldonado art project

Graphic art based on the use of color stim-ulate his passion for painting. His work expressesthe soul and body of situations that surround himat the moment. David is a very promising emergingabstract expressionist artist based in Puerto Rico.

Claudia Nieves

Marne Alder Steven Shooster

The work of Marne Adler evokes a certain nostalgia. De-scribed as magical realism, the artist shows the unreal ina common and everyday verses of poetry. With a partic-ular palette the artist takes us into her world, a very com-plex world full of textured and embossed papersintrinsically high detailed images that leave us lost in ourthoughts. Figurative content of these mostly GrecoRoman Renaissance images transport us through time, the smoothness of the faces with contrasting textures en-velops us in a monologue that makes it very difficult tolook away from these parts; for her conversation is anendless work.

In an ever changing world Stephen Shooster assimilates

himself through the creative depictions of the times.Through his narrative explorations we are transported toevents like epic historical snapshots on the canvas of theartist. Mixing reality with his passions Shooster capti-vates our attention through his monological narrativefilled with symbolism and his unique chromatic palette.

Salvador Gomez Joaquin Gonzalez

The works of Salvador Gómez go beyond the can-vas, most are the materialization of previous inter-ventions on the street and walls unrestricted inwhich he uses industrial materials. In an urbancharacter with a classical sensitivity Salvador bringsa dialogue of everyday experiences

The work of Joaquin Gonzalez if fundamentallyconcerned with a series of complex issues regard-ing the individual in society. Drawing on an array ofpersonal and cultural elements, Joaquin has devel-oped an elaborate symbolic visual vocabulary. Hecreates what one critic has referred to as "an arche-ology of the imagination.

eing attached to feelings, memories and emotions within us is something we deal with every-

day and every moment of our life. Knowing, without noticing, how emotive we are

My work aims to express the complexity of human emotions that resides within each of us. It’s aninvitation to reach more deeply ourselves and find what it would look like if we could see that in-tangible thing called emotions. Like the vagueness of memory, or the clarity of a certain moment...The inseparable relationship between them is how we are... full of many things at once…
