It looks to me the new Frisbee golf course is completed. I heard a rumor that there will be a tournament yet this fall. I haven’t seen anyone out sharpening their skills so maybe it’s just an idea someone is promoting!

I have some trees that are beginning to loose their leaves. Soon there will be color in the beans and corn will ripen, and we will be concerned about the first frost. Let’s pray for an injury-free season for the Warrior football team, and the safety of our farmers during the busy harvest.

Donald Dean Ambroson was born in Mason City, Iowa on Oc-

tober 27, 1931, the son of Alfred T. and Alma (Huglen) Ambroson. He graduated from Mason City High School with the Class of 1949 and graduated from Mason City Junior College (now NIACC) in 1951. Don continued his education at Luther Col-lege in Decorah where he graduated with a B.A. Degree in English, history and journalism in Janu-ary of 1953. He was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1953. After basic training at Camp Roberts in California, Don was sent to Hiroshima, Japan for three months of special training as a ste-nographer at the former Japanese Naval Academy then operated by the United States Army. Upon graduation, he was sent to Korea for a year where he served as the personal secretary of Command-ing General John Cogswell Oakes of the 25th Divi-sion Artillery. As soon as he returned from his 16 months over-seas tour, he married Gloria Falk of Northwood, Iowa on December 28, 1954, whom he met while attending Luther College. They were married for 63 years. Don began his career in education by becoming a teacher of English, history and journalism at Decorah High School in 1955. In 1959, he became the principal at Decorah High School after receiving his Master's Degree in school administration from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Later, he would also receive a Specialist in Educa-tion Degree (Ed.S) in school administration from UNI. In 1960, at the age of 28, Don became the Super-intendent of Schools at the Northwood-Kensett Community School which at that time had an en-rollment of 1,000 students. In the following years, he served as an Assistant Professor of Education at St. Olaf College, and Superintendent of Schools at Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock, Clarion and Storm Lake. During his years as superintendent, Don's leadership with local committees twice resulted in the passage of bond issues which created new high schools for both, Northwood-Kensett and Clar-ion. While in Storm Lake, he also served two years as President of the Rotary Club from 1971-1973. In 1974, he became the Chief Administrator of the Arrowhead Area Education Agency in Fort Dodge where he served for 19 years as the supervisor of 250 staff members in a nine county area. While in Fort Dodge, Don was President of the Fort Dodge Chamber of Commerce in 1981-1982, was Presi-dent of the Rotary Club, and also served on The Board of Directors at Friendship Haven for 12 years. Taking early retirement in 1993, Don and Gloria returned to Mason City for a ten year period where

he was active in the community and his home church. He worked part-time as the Superintendent of Schools in Lu Verne; served as church council member and president at Trinity Lutheran Church; was a member of the Civil Service Commission for the City of Mason City, and was a volunteer an-nouncer and board member at radio station KCMR. Also, during 1996-1997, Don was the District Gov-ernor for Rotary District #5970 which included 52 communities throughout northern Iowa. During Don's 35 years in Rotary, he received three Paul Harris Fellow Awards. Don and Gloria later moved to Ankeny, where Don continued in the field of education by working ten years as a part-time Supervisor of Student Teaching for Iowa State University. Don was always proud to be from Mason City and he attended every reunion of his high school class. He was also proud to be 100% Norwegian-American. He is survived by his wife, Gloria and three sons, John (Cindy), Tom and David, all of West Des Moines; two granddaughters, Amy (Taylor) Reid, and Laura (Austin) Olson, both of Kansas City; one great-grandson, Logan Reid; and three nieces, Beth, Trena and Kristine. MARBLE ROCK HISTORICAL SOCIETY Knitting for Victory On the home front during World War II (1941-1945), knitting to help the war effort and to keep American soldiers warm and dry was a major preoccupation of Americans, particularly women; however, some men also participated. The November 24, 1941, cover story of the popular weekly Magazine Life explained “How To

Knit” along with basic instructions and a pattern for a simple knitted vest. The article covered the great American question, “What can I do to help the war effort?” The commonest answer was ‘Knit.’" Knitting was supported by the popular Glen Miller orchestra with their song: “Knit 1, Purl 2”, The lyrics were: Knit one, purl 2, This sweater, my darling is for you, While vigil you’re keeping through rain and storm, This sweater will keep you warm… Our trials I know have begun, And while you are fighting each battle through, My darling, my heart’s for you. I just left the cot where our little Todd, In sleeping was smiling, He must have dreamed of you. Knit one, purl two, My darling, whenever I’m blue, It’s a comfort to know that when he is a man, He’ll be glad his Dad came through, Knit one, purl two…” The World War II knitting effort took place almost entirely under the auspices of the American Red Cross. In January 1942 the War Production Board designated the Red Cross as the single clearing agency for all knitting, and the War Production Board granted them priority status for receiving wool for knitting. The Red Cross supplied patterns for sweaters, socks, mufflers, fingerless mitts (which allowed sol-diers to keep their hands warm while shooting), toe covers (for use with a cast), stump covers, and other garments. These were to be knitted in olive drab or navy blue wool yarn. A label indicating which chapter of the Red Cross had provided the garment was sewn into each piece. Surviving pat-terns show that these knitting patterns were typed and retyped with carbon-paper copies and shared among the knitters. Many knitters chose to knit the same item in the same size again and again so that they could memorize the pattern and produce pieces more quickly. The knitted garments were “for American soldiers and sailors assigned to posts where General Winter is an added enemy. The supply of socks in some areas was critical as a terrible condition called “trench foot” occurs with constantly wet socks. The malady is often so bad the foot would need to be amputated. The solution is to frequently change to dry stocks which mean each serviceman requires many pairs of socks. Here in Marble Rock, the American Legion Auxil-iary members were busy knitting. My Mother, Delia Handley, was one of the member knitters that made sweaters and balaclavas. Whenever she was be-ginning a new hank of wool, my brother or I would need to hold the hank stretched between our out-stretched arms. She would then unwine the yarn from hank and roll it into a ball. I think today you are able to purchase a skein or ball that you can

knit directly from them, but in those days you needed to go through this step of making your own ball. She also found time to knit a maroon long sleeve sweater for me and a brown sleeve-less sweater for my brother Warren Handley. This was in the winter of 1942-43. Max C. Handley

I would like to thank everyone who brought in food, came to visit or sent flowers and cards since by ac-cident. God Bless! Bonnie Schriever Letter from Sammy Logsdon Dear Beverly, I continue to enjoy the Journal greatly. Whenever it arrives, I put everything else aside and spend time basking in nostalgia. It’s especially rewarding to read about old friends and acquaintances and their families. When I was young and foolish, words came easily to me. Now that I am much, much older and far, far more foolish, I often have things I wish to say, but words fail me. It will have to be enough, I guess to simply say, “Thank you and your minions for doing so much to keep the spirit of the midwestern small community alive and fresh.” It is rare and important thing that you do.

Warm regards. Thank you Sammy so glad you enjoy reading our Journal. It is a joy to put it out every month. We greatly appreciate your contributions. Understand what you are saying about words failing you. Seems that’s what happens as we age gracefully. Thank you again. Beverly Fisher
