Apps.Gov: the Federal Apps Store

The Federal government launched Apps.gov, a site designed to be a storefront for approved cloud computing applications

The move is designed to streamline application adoption at federal agencies

“Like a utility such as electricity or water, cloud computing allows users to consume only what they need, to grow or shrink their use as their needs change, and to pay only for what they actually use” Vivien Kundra, US Fed CIO

The Italian Situation

Municipalities

More than 8.000 Municipalities

70% under 5.000 inhabitants

IT costs sometimes are too relevant

… but the needs of Local Public Administrations

are similar!

Health

Small structures are not able to meet the IT Costs

Page 5: Marabese and Roiter: Cloud

Why Cloud could be a solution…

The infrastructure is available (broadband connection : 97% of Municipalities, 99% of ASL)

Same business needs for each Administration

No upfront costs

Suitable for local environments

Cloud as tool of collaboration between different Local Administrations

Cloud as eDemocracy enabler

… but the way is still long to cover!
