WELCOME TO ThE NAIL fAMILy

METAL POSTCARD RECORDS pg 10–11Metal Postcard Records was founded in 2002 and launched with the now infamous 7” Imagine This by Australian mash-up artist Wax Audio, which had George W. Bush singing Lennon’s classic peace song. The artist received a personal email from Yoko Ono saying that John would have loved the idea, and when Bush visited Sydney in 2007 and 100,000 people gathered to protest the Iraq War, this was the song chosen by march organizers to play to the crowd.

Metal Postcard now has over 50 releases under its belt, and like the labels that inspired them — Factory, Island, Small Wonder, Rough Trade, and especially Fast Records — they hope to bring the left-field into the mainstream and help people understand that pop music isn’t all “X Factor” and “American Idol!”

Metal Postcard has been resident in Hong Kong for the past five years, and spent a lot of time combing the best of China and Asia’s underground to bring you the first wave of independent and alternative artists to emerge from the region, including acts such as the Cambodian Space Project, Pairs (Shanghai) and Volt In Music (Hong Kong), among many others. But they aren’t limited geographically and also have acts from Australia, the UK, and the U.S. as well. They intend to find the Congo’s Aphex Twin, Laos’ White Stripes, and Papua New Guinea’s Neil Young. If they aren’t out there now, Metal Postcard will be the ones on the ground to find them for you when they are!

sellinG PoinTs• Original Sixties-era LP is a hard-to-find and highly

sought-after collector’s item. • Sampled by influential producer Steinski in

the ’90s, C.K.’s music became an instant underground hit!

C.K. Mann made his name as a virtuoso guitar player in Ghana when he played with Moses Kweku Oppong in the Kakaikus Guitar Band in the early ’60s. He then became the leader of the band Ocean’s Strings until 1966. In 1968, he enjoyed a hit with the single “Edina Benya.”

This album came out of the Essiebons label, run by Dick Essilfe Bondzie. The album could have been a massive hit in Ghana, but due to the country’s economic downturn, the factories ran out of vinyl and demand for the record could not be met.

In the late ’90s hip-hop producers started hearing about Afrobeat through the sounds of Fela Kuti. Then Steinski, one of the most influential producers in hip-hop, sampled Mann’s song “Asafo Beesoun” and suddenly all the hip-hop collectors wanted it! The original LP is a hard-to-find and highly sought-after collector’s item.

“A non-stop funky party from C.K. Mann — and a set that definitely lives up to its title … a shifting array of styles that runs from highlife to funkier African rhythms!” — DUSTY GROOVE

This brand new recording will see the light of day in 2013 via the band’s new home at Small Stone Recordings.

“Kudos to Swedish heavy rocking four-piece Deville on their signing to Small Stone. The Detroit label, who’ve already had so busy a 2012 that I haven’t been able to keep up with reviewing everything, seem not to be slowing in the slightest as 2013 comes on.” — THE OBELISK

Larry Coryell’s third album on Wide Hive Records is simply astounding. On this throwback-style rock trio record, Larry delivers quintessential performances throughout all 12 tracks. Offering rock, blues, and soul-infused jazz, Larry is on his game with skills so amazing, it will make you seriously question how they could be the one-take performances they are. Guitarists take note: Larry’s got game!

“As one of the pioneers of jazz-rock — perhaps the pioneer in the ears of some — Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE

“Larry Coryell’s name isn’t bandied around much now, but in the 1970s he was almost as big a guitar star as John McLaughlin, and an equivalent influence on the development of early electric jazz-rock fusion … Coryell’s crackling uptempo bursts and engagingly rough-hewn energy give this familiar music a vividness and infectious enthusiasm.” — THE GUARDIAN

“You don’t even have to be a fan of his or a guitar aficionado to dig this disc; anyone who likes that old school funky rock-jazz with a few delectable diversions will find a lot to like about it. The old Larry Coryell, the Father of Fusion Guitar, is back.” — SOMETHING ELSE!

Functional Arrhythmias is the latest and most ambitious chapter in saxophonist Steve Coleman’s ongoing study into patterns found in nature — in this case, the various rhythms found inside the human body — and using them as the building blocks for his highly individual musical language. Considered by many to be the most influential figure in jazz of the last two decades, Coleman’s music is most readily identified by its elusive and constantly shifting rhythms. To help realize his latest musical vision, Coleman has re-enlisted two veterans of his band, Five Elements: Sean Rickman on drums and Anthony Tidd on bass. Together with long-time member Jonathan Finlayson — one of the most highly acclaimed young trumpeters on the jazz scene — they possess the rare combination of intuition and experience to capture Coleman’s music in all its labyrinthine beauty.

“The most influential jazzman of his era.” — WALL STREET JOURNAL “Of all the musicians who followed Coltrane, Ornette, and the AACM, Coleman has done the most work and sustained the highest level of innovation and creativity of output and impact.” — DOWNBEAT

Onkalo (“hiding place”) is the name of the nuclear fuel repository currently under construction in Finland to house hazardous nuclear waste. It is designed to last a minimum of 100,000 years, a scale of time unimaginable when the oldest surviving man-made structures have endured not even a tenth of that time. Is it possible for humankind to build something that will endure a timescale that vast? And what will be left to uncover it if it does so?

New material from this New York-based composer! With ONEIROGEN, Mario Diaz de Leon creates his own style of hallucinatory music, merging ethereal synths, brutal distortion, dark ambient, and noise. The project was initiated in 2012 with the release of Hypnos, which garnered widespread acclaim among fans of experimental and heavy music for its varied and cinematic intensity. While maintaining a strong electronic (and unclassifiable) sound, Kiasma offers an intensification of the metal elements present on the debut.

Never content to follow trends or formulas, Informatik continues to refine their unique sonic vision on their seventh full-length album, Playing With Fire. The album’s opener, “No Sympathy,” offers a rich showcase of their musical talents with its scathing lyrics, densely layered guitars, and intricate vocal arrangements. The irresistible groove of “How Long” is destined for the club floor with its inventive programming and spectacular sound design. The album’s centerpiece, “No One,” with its vast pastoral soundscapes and cinematic orchestration, is bound to be the crowning achievement of their career. Truly, Informatik is Playing With Fire … can you take the heat?

“The slow seething synth of ‘Predator’ instantly gives a sense of foreboding. Din’s deep vocals are perfect to drawl slowly across the surface of the song, sounding like it was designed as a soundtrack for a nightmare.” — SOUNDSPHERE
