Welcome new neighbors to the Mar Vista neighborhood. This publication is created by your local neighborhood association (Mar Vista Neighborhood Association/MVNA). Our principal purpose is to encourage neighbors to get to know each other and make our blocks safer, friendlier places to live. Our big event of the year is our community mixer/potluck picnic, which is scheduled for Sunday June 12th, followed by our annual meeting in January. On a weekly basis neighbors shop and schmooze at our local Mar Vista Farmers’ Market. It’s a wonderful market with family friendly activities, great food stands and plenty of fresh, local produce and prepared foods to cover nearly all tastes and budgets. On June 5th the Mar Vista Farmers’ Market will be hosting elections for the Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC), which is a registered City of Los Angeles neighborhood council. We have the opportunity to show the City of L.A. that Mar Vista is a community of engaged and concerned residents by showing up to vote. MVNA is located in Zone 4 of the MVCC’s territory and we have a choice between two candidates who have been actively working to make a difference for our community. I encourage you to read their statements and make an informed decision. You’ll also have the opportunity to vote for up to six people running for the At-Large positions. There are eight candidates running for those positions. At the last election, just over 200 people voted out of more than 34,000 stakeholders. We can do better. The more people participate the greater the impact the neighborhood council can have when working with the City. We’re fortunate to have a very engaged City Councilperson, Mike Bonin, who actually lives in Mar Vista – however his ability to influence government is also dependent on an engaged community. So vote June 5th for the next board of directors of our local neighborhood council – the Mar Vista Community Council. For more information and candidate statements go to https://empowerla.org/elections/region11/mvcc16/ or stop the MVCC Community Outreach tent at the Farmers’ Market! There are many ways to find out what’s happening in the neighborhood Our website www.mvneighbors.org has information about our organization, lost pets, membership and city resources. Our Facebook page www.facebook.com/MarVistaNeighbors is where all the action is. We run a very active page that gives you up-to-date information about the neighborhood happenings. Our Twitter feed at www.twitter.com/MarVista90066 engages our community with the communities around us. www.NextDoor.com is like talking to your neighbor over the backyard fence. This site is good for recommendations and offering things for sale. You can also visit the following websites for a broader look at our area.

Come meet old friend or make some new ones. We especially want to invite our neighbors who have recently moved into the neighborhood and those who are shy about attending because they don’t know anyone. Please come and find a Board member or ambassador (we’ll be wearing a badge), and say that you’re new and we’ll certainly make you feel welcome. Or, another wonderful way to get involved is to become an ambassador. Please email [email protected] to sign up. We look forward to seeing all our neighbors at the best “Potluck Picnic” in Los Angeles!

Take the Metro to Santa Monica It’s finally here—you can now take the metro from Santa Monica to downtown. I jumped on the metro on opening weekend to Santa Monica. It’s wonderful to let Metro do the driving so I can relax on the 20-minute commute. And, the best part, no worries about parking! - Debbie Rochlin

What’s the difference between the MVNA and the MVCC? By Jean Roth

The MVNA (that’s us!) and MVCC both serve the community but in very different ways

MVNA MVCC We are independent of the council, and we don’t represent anyone — we are just neighbors like you! We work together to foster neighborliness and community spirit, improve safety and security, and keep our community informed about events in our area, from fun happenings to crime alerts. We live in Zone 4: from the 405 wall (Globe) to Centinela; Venice Blvd to Palms.

The MVCC represents Mar Vista residents with the City of L.A., serving as elected advocates for all six Mar Vista zones — a fairly extensive area. The MVCC handles issues on zoning, laws, education, transit, street services, and other government-mandated issues. Community-elected Zone Directors and At-Large Directors represent all six zone of Mar Vista. That’s why the upcoming election is important — because these are the people who will bring your concerns to the attention of the city.

Hopefully that clarifies some of the confusion!

Remember: Vote to be represented on June 5 at the MVCC Elections. Then come have FUN on June 12 at the MVNA Potluck Picnic!
