I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11

My dear Children, Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

We are reflecting on Jesus Christ our Lord as the Good Shepherd.

A Good shepherd is concerned about feeding the lambs, bringing them to good pasture lands and water, grooming and clipping them, delivering new lambs, leading them and teaching them to stay together, going off after the wandering lost ones, and protecting the sheep in the field and in the sheepfold.

Good shepherd begins to feed the lambs by introducing the ways of God, first with the instruction and teaching in God’s way. Then the instructions to live in righteousness so that the lambs can be fully equipped, able to stand in the day of testing. Good shepherd grooms the lambs to correct them from wrongdoing. He must teach lambs discipline and encourage and rebuke them so that they remain true to the Lord. Good shepherd preaches the Gospel so that many are brought to new life. On the other side, a good shepherd leads his flocks, not just individual sheep. Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd to us as individuals and make sure that we receive all the benefits of being part of His flock, that we be fed, pastured, groomed and trained, that we stay together, that the lost among us be led back, and that we are protected from evil even at the cost of His own life.

Our bishops and priests are His shepherds among us this day, maintain the flock and carry out Jesus’ work of shepherding by leading us to our Lord. They further call us to be good shepherds to one another by taking up the same work of feeding, grooming, and delivering each other.

    God’s blessings upon you!

the ross s o r hope pope g es r et or ess g On Friday, before an empty and rain covered St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis held Eucharistic adoration and gave an e traordinary rbi et Orbi blessing, praying for the world during the coronavirus pandemic which has killed more than ,000 people.

The holy hour March included a reading from the Gospel and a meditation by Pope Francis, who spoke about faith and trust in God during a time when people fear for their lives, as did the disciples when their boat was caught in a violent storm.

e ha e an an hor: y his ross we ha e een sa ed. e ha e a r dder: y his ross we ha e een redeemed. e ha e a hope: y his ross we ha e een healed and em ra ed so that nothing and no one an separate s from his redeeming lo e Pope Francis said.

Embracing Christ’s cross, he said, means finding the o rage to em ra e all the hardships of the present time.

Em ra ing the ord in order to em ra e hope: that is the strength of faith whi h frees s from fear and gi es s hope the pope stated.

Pope Francis held Eucharistic adoration on an altar set up under the portico in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. Also present nearby was a miraculous crucifi which the pope visited March 1 to pray for an end to the coronavirus pandemic.

The crucifi , which usually hangs in San Marcello al Corso, was venerated as miraculous by Romans after it was the only religious image to survive unscathed from a fire that completely gutted the church on May , 1 1 .

An image of the By antine icon of Mary as Salus Populi Romani, was also brought to the square for veneration during the prayer.

At the conclusion of the prayer, Pope Francis gave an e traordinary rbi et Orbi blessing, and gave benediction with the Blessed Sacrament while the bells of the basilica rang.

Pope Francis said during the hour of prayer that part of faith is reali ing we are in need of salvation, that we are not self sufficient.

Dear Friends, Prayerful greetings from the Cathedral!

The Cathedral is here to provide you with assistance during this difficult time. If you (or someone else) need help, feel free to contact your ward officials or the numbers listed at the bottom of this letter. The Cathedral’s Response Team will get back to you.

The spread of the coronavirus may be one of the most challenging periods of this generation and this century. All of us are in some sort of risk. For example, our healthcare professionals and their families are at high risk. The situation of business owners and their families is the same.

For preventing the spread of the virus, we must strictly follow the preventive measures and cooperate with others who try to implement preventive measures recommended by government agencies and our Diocese.

The difficulties presented by the virus can likely include lack of necessary supplies and feelings of fear, frustration, isolation, helplessness, and uncertainty. It is difficult to list them all, and it depends on a person’s circumstances. Overcoming difficulties requires resilience and perseverance based on faith and assistance from others. The Cathedral is here to help you.

Our forefathers in Kerala went through epidemics and challenges during the first half of last century and before that. The foundation of the success of those families was rosary and family prayer. I request each of you to pray together every evening at your home the same way you did with your parents and siblings in Kerala, and the Father Almighty will not abandon us.

We will remember all of you in our Holy Qurbanas and our prayers.

    Yours in Christ,

Rev. Fr. Thomas Kadukapillil and Rev. Fr. Kevin Mundackal Cathedral Vicar Assistant Vicar March 22, 2020 March 22, 2020
