“Pressing On” One of the many things I love about scripture is how certain passages apply to all kinds of situations in life. One example of this is Philippians 3:14 where Paul says, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” I know Paul was speaking of spiritual things, but to “press on” is good advice in many practical matters.

For instance, I think (I hope and pray!) we are nearing the end of the covid-19 pan-demic and that life can soon return to some semblance of normalcy. But let’s not let up! As we near the end I already see some relaxing a bit and not being as careful as we were a month or two ago. I completely understand. We are all so tired of having to take all these precautions. But if we do not “press on” we might get sick, or worse, infect someone else. Letting up is almost always a bad idea.

Ask Leon Lett. Remember him? Super Bowl XXVII? He was the defensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys who nearly had a dream come true by scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl . . . except Lett let up just before crossing the goal line. Leon recov-ered a fumble and rumbled 65 yards untouched toward the goal line and glory! Uh, make that 63 yards, because he slowed up and began to celebrate. Don Bebee of the Buffalo Bills caught up to him and knocked the ball out of his hand 2 yards short of the endzone. Watch it on YouTube https://youtu.be/U6gmDtVYdLA. Funny, isn’t it? Unless you’re Leon Lett. Again, Lett let up, and letting up is almost always a bad idea.

So, let’s not be like Lett! Let’s “press on,” like Paul. He was pressing on toward God through Jesus Christ, as we all should. But let’s also press on toward keeping others and ourselves healthy. I know no one here wants to cause another to get ill. This is a pain and grief we do not want to inflict on anyone.

We have done well so far. Press on. Phillip

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

The Feb. conference was presided over by Frank Jones. Minutes of the December meeting were approved as printed, there being no meeting in January. There was no old or new business. The following committee reports were given: Music: Lee Stogner, worship leader, announced that he hopes to get back to some choir rehears-als, now that many other areas of the church are opening back up. Trustees: Gene Floyd, chair, reported on the three bids secured for paving the area next to the Daniels Building and repairing an area next to the choir entrance. This work entails prep, sub-grade for positive drainage, soil sterilant, 6 inch crush run, 2 inch asphalt or

other top, paint, line and mark off, and replace concrete at choir entrance. The bids ranged from $59,200 to $49,500. After much discussion, the body voted to go with Osborne Paving for a turn-key concrete job at cost $49,500. Gene contacted the City Administrator about helping with the sweeping of the three parking lots since they share them during the week. He agreed to bring this up at the next council meeting but felt this fair proposal. The prices discussed were $1,300 for thorough clean sweep and $80 monthly after that. Gene will get back with us as soon as he hears from them. Finance: Linda Shotwell, chair reported another very good month in January with our receipts exceeding our expenses by $21,789.91. Keep up the good work, church family. Children and Youth: Andy McCall, was with youth so Dr. Reynolds brought his report. They are working on re-opening Children’s Sunday School clas-ses during the 10am Sunday School hour beginning March 7th, They are also working on re-opening nursery and Children’s Church during the 11am worship hour beginning March 7th. Youth Group is now meeting at 6pm every Wednesday evening. Between 10 & 15 youth attended. They are looking forward to hosting other youth get-togethers outside regular church hours. WMU: Honri Jones, director, reported that we sent 5 backpacks filled with clothes, food, toiletries and school supplies to Appalachian Children’s Ministry. We also sent 19 prison packets to Santee Association to be sent to Columbia. Before Christmas one was given to each prisoner in a state prison in SC.

FEBRUARY BUSINESS MEETING NOTES

Our church sent $16,052.92 to Lottie Moon Christmas Offering! This is happy information as we exceeded our goal and early on. Recreation: No one was there from this committee, but Frank Jones announced that the playground is now open for church members. Christian Academy Foundation: Ray Langston, chair, reported that the Foundation is paying 90% of Andy’s seminary cost. He is doing very well. Ray encouraged members to give memorials and honorariums to the foundation, so we will be able to continue this worthwhile cause. This concluded our business. We went into Bible study.
