H is Holiness Bava Thirumeni, respected Chief Guest, other dignitaries on and off the dais, parents, grandparents, staff and students, a very warm and pleasant evening to each one of you. Presentation of the Annual Report is an occasion to brief you all the major events happened so far and also the achievements of our students both in scholastic and co-scholastic areas. This academic year commenced as always with a retreat for all staff members and a training cum motivational session for teaching staff. The board examination results of std-X and XII were truly encouraging especially the exceptional achievement of Elizabeth Jacob of std-X –, the 3rd National Rank holder, who secured 497 marks out of 500. It is by God’s abundant grace that Elizabeth was able to secure such a wonderful result and make our school shine brighter. Majority of the students in both std X & XII secured excellent marks and we honoured and congratulated all our winners on Merit Day, 3rd June. Our manager Bava Thirumeni awarded the trophies to the winners. The presentand former leaders of this school and Governing Board members graced the occasion. We celebrated World Environment Day by planting trees. On Reading Day, the entire staff and students spent one full period, reading a book. On International Yoga Day, students practiced yoga exercises followed by a speech on the benefits of yoga by the Principal. Orientation programme for parents of Eurokids was held on 10th June, led by Eurokids Counsellor Mrs. Vinitha Mariam Jogi and our play school started functioning from 12th June. Senior Secondary Humanities students were taken to Collectorate on 15th June to familiarize them with the functioning of the different offices at Collectorate. Interhouse Quiz competitions were held class wise. All students took part in the first level written round and the qualified students entered the final oral round. Kottayam district was formed in July 1949; and our students celebrated its 70th anniversary on 1st July. We commenced the activities of our existing clubs – Nature club, Reading club, Birds Club International, Nallapadam and Balajanasakhyam units at the beginning of the academic year. One of the Nallapadam charity initiatives, Snehavelli commenced on 5th July, providing lunch for the inmates of the old age home at Bethany Ashram, Kuzhimattom. This continues every month on all first Fridays.Right after the Union Budget presentation by Ms. Nirmala Seetharaman on 1st July, we conducted a budget analysis session for our Commerce and Humanities students on 9th July, led by Chartered Accountant Mr. Jossey Thomas. A three-day book fair by Scholastic Publishers was conducted for children to explore and buy books of their choice for extra reading.A heritage walk was arranged for students of Higher Secondary Humanities by taking them to Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. Higher Secondary Science students were taken to ISRO Trivandrum to see the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Museum and also the launching of rocket.Sarang, our school cultural on-stage competitions were held in July, which is the main highlight of semester – I. This is the platform where our students compete house wise and the winners go on to the District Kalotsav and then to the State Kalotsav. This year also, we extended a helping hand to the flood victims. Staff of MBPS contributed relief items for the flood victims of Malappuram district and handed over to the collection centre organized by Collectorate, Kottayam.I am very proud of the initiatives taken by Edwin K Jayesh of std-X and all his batch mates for organizing an All in One Exhibition VYOMA, mainly based on the life and work of the missile man of India, APJ Abdul Kalam.Mar Baselios hosted the two-day capacity building programme for principals conducted by Centre of Excellence, CBSE. 60 Principals from different states in India and also a few from abroad attended the training session.Being a Board Exam Centre, Mar Baselios was chosen by CBSE as a lead collaborator school. Mar Baselios and five other schools in Kottayam district form our Hub of Learning. The principals of these 6 schools meet once a month to discuss and sharebest practices. We also conduct inter school competitions for students, ranging from art competition, quizzes and also sports and games. We hosted an HoL training session for teachers of these 6 schools on Experiential Learning and Art Integrated Education.Independence day and Onam were celebrated.Std-XII visited Mundakapadam old age home and spent a few hours with the inmates.Students of

different classes were taken to charity homes, orphanages and old age homes to create a sense of compassion and empathy towards less fortunate people around them.The two day 7th All Kerala Mar Baselian Interschool Basketball and Badminton Tournament was held in September. Sri. P.K Sudheer Babu IAS, District Collector, Kottayam was the Chief Guest of the opening ceremony and Sri. P.S Sabu IPS graced the closing ceremony and gave away the prizes.Guruvandanam was organized by std-XI on teachers’ day. Students of std-IX conducted a mock election – a hands on experience in understanding the procedure of election.Our Balajanasakhyam unit visited Ashraya Charitable society with vegetables for their Onam Sadhya. Hindi day was celebrated by conducting a special assembly with students and staff presenting everything in Hindi. Students planted fruit saplings and crotons in the front garden as part of Birds Club International initiative.Students of std-IV were taken to Eranjal paddy fields to see the initial preparations for paddy cultivation.The 2ndBaselian Interschool Fest MERAKI-2019 was conducted in September which was a platform for students of senior school to compete with students of our neighbouring CBSE schools in Quiz, Debate and Best management competitions. In addition to these, other fun competitions such as photography, cartoon, dance, treasure hunt etc. were also held. Thoolika 2019 was released by the Chief Guest Mr. Cyriac Pattani, Deputy G.M, Circulation, Malayala Manorama.Std-X was taken for an industrial visit to Malayala Manorama printing unit.On Gandhi Jayanthi, after taking the oath to keep our environment clean, staff and students together cleaned the campus, followed by a kappa party with Kappa, Chutney and Kattankappi.Kids Fest for Kindergarten was held on 3rd& 4th October.A session for the entire school on disaster management was arranged in association with Malayala Manorama Horizon.The students of Humanities dept. efficiently executed a mock drill by training and evacuating the entire school in less than 4 minutes in a fault free manner.Std-XI humanities visited Kadampuzha tribal colony at Thattekkadu as part of their project on indigenous people and social disparity.

An awareness class on air pollution was conducted for stds-VIII & XI by Dr.Harshavardhan, Thoracic surgeon of Sri Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi and as part of their survey a lung capacity test was also conducted for these students. All our academic assessments were conducted as per prior schedule and PTA general body meetings and open houses were held correspondingly.A special awareness session on the hidden dangers of social media and its consequences was conducted for parents and students led by Mr. Arun Kumar of special wing, DySP office, Kottayam.PTA Executive Committee meetings were also held regularly, presided over by PTA President Mr. Ajay George Varghese.Annual Sports Day was conducted on 27th Nov, and Baselian Mini Marathon with the theme Fitness and Nutrition on 2nd Dec. Annual sports events for Kindergarten were also held on the same day.As part of Fit India Movement, which is a new initiative by Honourable Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi, we observed ‘Fit India School week’ recently by conducting several physical activities and fitness sessions for students.I am really proud to announce the grant of `20 lakhs sanctioned by the Central Government through Niti Aayog for setting up a Robotics lab. It is a major addition to our infrastructure and pivotal in equipping students for 21st century needs. The ATL lab is almost ready and will be inaugurated in January.Young Baselians brought laurels to school by taking part in many inter school, district, state and national level competitions. Due to lack of time I am not reading out a very long list of winners, but only a few major ones. Bhadra Deepak of std-VIII, 4th position in the 5th National contest and Nivedh Raj of std-IV, 2nd position in the National Abacus competition held in Chennai.Lakshmi Ajikumar, std-IV, our chess wizard bagged many first prizes this year. To name a few, 1st positions at Kottayam Chess Academy Championship, the 7th All Kerala Open Chess Tournament and also the CBSE HoL Chess Competition. Our Roller-skating champions are Basil Sunny of std-VII and Kevin George of std-XI. Both of them bagged several first and second prizes at district level and are selected to the state level competitions.Ranju K Rajesh and Ishita Elyza Jogi secured 2nd place in the BMM Interschool Quiz.

In the Excelsior Interschool Fest, the following students bagged prizes. Nimisha Elizabeth Varghese and Geo Roji of std-XI won first positionin theBusiness Quiz, Sruthi Susan Mathew & Elizabeth Jacob of std-XI first position in the News on Air Contest, Reina Reji Kurian of std-XI 1st position in the line strokes contest, and Mathen James Kottarathil won the audience friendly speaker award in the debate competition. Sarath Mathew Jacob and Mathen James Kottarathil of std-XII secured 1st place in the Baselian MERAKI Interschool Debate. Yadunandan P of std-IX secured the best performer award at Akhila Kerala Balajanasakhyam two-day camp.Kottayam Sahodaya Sargasangamam winners – 120 schools participated and we secured several prizes and I am mentioning only the major ones.English Elocution – George Mathew of std-VI, 1st Place.Guitar Western –Ryan John, Std-XII 1st Place.Classical music and Sanskrit recitation, Geethanjali S, Std-XI, second place for both and Western music concert – 2nd place.The 1st and 2nd place winners of Kottayam Sahodaya took part in the State Kalotsav and Geethanjali secured 2nd place in Classical music and 3rd place for Ryan John in Guitar Western.George Mathew secured A Grade in English Elocution.Our basketball team won second position at 19th Kottayam Sahodaya Interschool Basketball Tournament. Our football team also won the first runner-up trophy at the Sahodaya Interschool Tournament.A short film ‘Free Birds’ prepared by Baselian Birds Club International Unit was sent for competition at the Rain International Nature Film Festival organized by Film Director Mr. Jayaraj and his team at Munnar.Details of all the other winners and achievements will be published in the next edition of Thoolika.Apart from imparting bookish knowledge, students are taken out of their class rooms to experience life skills by interacting with people to get exposure, especially senior school students.We arrangedinteractive sessionswith subject experts for Senior Secondary students. A seminar on Sociology by Amrutha Rinu Abraham, lecturer CMS college, Kottayam, a special session on Religion and Humanity by Dr.Jaisy Karingattil, School of Legal Thoughts, Kottayam, a class by Advocate Varghese Varghese on cyber law, a seminar on Artificial

Intelligence by Dr. Jobin Varghese, tutor Ilahia College of Engineering, Muvattupuzha.I am grateful to one of our parents who arranged training for std-X & XII students on how to change a tyre as part of life skill enhancement.Children enjoy life at Mar Baselios by taking part in outside class room activities such as mass drill, free hands exercises, zumba, yoga, gardening etc.Pleasure trips and school excursions of this academic year are almost over except for KG and Senior Secondary which is arranged for this month.We completed portions for both std-X & XII by October end. We conduct three model exams for Board Exam students. From January beginning, academics take exclusive priority and the rest of the portions for all the other classes will be taught and proper revisions will be done before annual examinations.This year also we are Board Exam centre, so the dates of the annual examination for Stds I to VIII will be set later. Annual examinations for Stds - IX & XI will be

conducted by January end and their next academic sessions will commence in February. All our major school programs are over except Christmas celebration, Founder’s Day and staff trip.We will also conduct a food fest to raise funds for Annual Christmas Charity.The admissions are open for the next academic year and you parents and students are our best ambassadors.Mar Baselios is a child centered school and we try our best to make the children under our care happy and confident to face life and also to be wholesome humanbeings.May I conclude by extending my sincere gratitude to each one of you for your cooperation, help and support at all times.Thank you very much and do enjoy the rest of the evening.
