JAMES A. YEEND.

James A. Yeend is a self-made man who is now the owner of three hundred and eighty acres, constituting a valuable farm property on section 20, township 8 north, range 36 east, \,Valla Walla county. He was born in Gloucestershire, England, on the 8th of March, 1856, and is a son of William and Ellen (Surman) Yeend, who were natives of England, ,vhence they crossed the Atlantic to the new world in December, 1870. They settled on a farm in section 20, township 8 no~th, range 36 east, Walla \:Valla county, and here the father passed away, while the mother later became a resident of Walla 'Walla and died in that city. They were the parents of sixteen children, se,·en of ,vhom survive.

Jamcg A. Yeend was a lad of fourteen vears when he crossed the Atlantic

to the United States in company with his parents. He had acquired his education in England and remained under the parental roof until twenty-one years of age, when he started out in life for himself. Two years later he took up a preemption claim of one hundred and twenty acres and bought one hundred and sixty acres of railroad land in Walla vValla county but in 188.3 sold this property to his father. He then removed to \Vhitman county, \Vashington, where he took up a homestead and timber claim, upon which he li\'ed for twelve years and through that period wrought a marked transformation in the appearance of his property, for he brought much of the land under a high state of cultivation .. In 1896 he sold that place and came to \Valla Walla county, where he now resides. Here he owns three hundred and eighty-four acres of rich and productive land. upon which he has placed many modern imprO\·ements, including an attracti,·e home and substantial buildings that furnish ample shelter for grain and stock. He is an energetic and progressive farmer and his place pre:-ents a most attracth·e appearance, indicative of the care and labor which he bestows upon his fields and also indicative of the careful supervision which he gives to a11 branches of the farm work.

On the I 5th of December, I 883, Mr. Yeend was united in marriage to :\Jiss Lydia Chandler, also a native of Gloucesterl-hire, England, and a daughter of Joseph and Eliza (Surman) Chandler. I Ier father clic<I in that country and her mother came to America in October, 1882, locating in \Vhitman county, vVashington, where she took up a homestead claim and spent the remainder of her life. To ).fr. and ).frs. ·Yeend have been born eight children. nam<'ly: Ernest E .. Edith M., Fred S. and Frank J., twins; Flora E .. \VilJiam ,\ .. ()]in~ and Esther.\.

l\fr. and l\frs. Yeend are devoted members of the Ivlcthodist Episcopal church. in the work of which they take an active and helpful interest, Mr. Yeend serving now as one of the trustees. His political support is given to the republican party and he has scn·cd for !-ixteen years as a member of the school board .. FratcrnalJy he is connected with the Ancient Order of United Workmen. As the architect of his own fortunes he has builded wisely and well and is not only one of the self-made men of \Valla \Valla county but is also one of its most progressive farmers and in all that he does holds to the highest standards of agricultural development and activity. __c,_ ___ _

SURMAN N. YEEND.

Surma~ _N. Yeend, one of the leading wheat raisers of the Walla Walla valley, res1dmg at Valley Grove, was born in England May 21 i866 f \x1·11· , , , a son o

·v 1 1am and Ellen Yeend, who are mentioned elsewhere 1·n thi·s k · · · h wor m con-nection wit the sketch of their son James.

Surman N. Yeend was reared and educated in Walla Walla count h · be n b t 1 d 1 b 1 · Y' a vmg . e u a young a w 1en roug 1t by his parents to the new world. The fam-ily home. w~s established in the northwest and he has since been familiar with the upbmld1?g and progress of this section of the country. His youthful days were spent m the usual manner of the farmbred boy who divides his time be-

iween the duties of the schoolroom, the pleasures of the playground and the work of the fields, and his early training in farm work well qualified him to take up work of that character on his own account after he had reached man's estate. He located on the place which is now his home and which comprises s~ven hundred acres of rich and productive land, all under cultivation. He makes a specialty of the growing of wheat and his broad fields present a most pleasing picture, giving indication of abundant harvests. He is also successfully engaged in stock raising and keeps upon his farm high grades of cattle, horses and hogs. In all ·of his business affairs he displays a progressive spirit and keeps in touch with every improvement that has to do with farm life.

Mr. Yeend has been married twice. He first wedded Miss Anna M. Harper and to them were born two children: Charles E.; and Helen, the wife of Arthur Anderson. The wife and mother passed away and in 1901 l\fr. Yeend was again married, his second uniori being with Miss Mary Loland, a native of Wash· ington. They have become parents of six children: Cleola M., Roland A., Allen C., Wilbur H., Lowell W. and Howard S.

l\lr. and 1\1 rs. Yeend arc members of the Nazarene church. Mr. Yeend votes with the republican party and has served on the census board, filling that position in 1900. He is not active in politics, however, preferred to concentrate his time and energies upon his farming interests, and by his close application in bu~iness affairs and his unremitting industry he has won a. very gratifying measure of success, being now numbered among the substantial and prosperous agriculturists of \Valla \Valla county.

Philip Yenney, deceased, was for many years a well known and prominent agriculturist of western Washington. He became identified with the state in pioneer times and lived to witness the remarkable changes that were wrought as the work of development and improvement was carried forward, and with the ·passing y_ears he bore his full share in the work. of general progress and

improvement. Mr. Yenney was a native of Germany and came to the United States when

a youth of sixteen or seventeen years and for some time worked on the Potomac river in connection with its traffic interests, while subsequently he was employed by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company. Later he se~ured a situatfon on a plantation in Virginia and on leaving the Old Dominion went-to Iowa, where he met the lady whom he afterward made his wife, her parents having removed from Pennsylvania to Indiana and subsequently to Iowa, where they were residing at that time. In 186o Mr. Yenney came to the northwest, which was then far removed from civilization, being cut off by the long stretches of· hot sand and the higl1 mountains that of ten seemed an insurmountable barrier to the traveler who would have desired to become a resident of the Pacific coast country. Undeterred by hardships and difficulties which he must meet, Mr. Yenney made his way to ·washington and for some years was engaged in freighting between Walla Walla and the Idaho mines. The district into which he came bore little

resemblance to the highly developed section that one sees here today. After freighting for a time he became connected with Mr. Still in the conduct of a trading post on Hangman's creek, near the present site of Spokane, a place which n;as then. known as the California ranch. Subsequently he engaged in farming, with which he was prominently identified up to the time of his death, and as his financial resources increased he kept adding to his holdings by additional purchase until he had acquired some sixteen hundred acres of wheal land and one thott!--ancl acres of grazing land. He thus won a position among the foremost agricultmists of this state and his life record illustrates what it is possible to al·compli:-:h in the west when the individual possesses industry, determination and 1:mc1:1hlt• ,:,mhitinn.

THE YENNEY TOWN HOUSE -- 1896 834 East Alder

John Yenney and his son Robert are the fourth and fifth generations of the Yenney family to farm the same land. Philip Yenney, a native of Germany, came to the United States in 1850, working his way to the mid-west. He married Miss Rachael Winnett in Iowa and in 1857, with her father, the two families started west by ox team. At Hangman's Creek, near Spokane, they opened a trading post. A few years later, moving south, the Yenneys came to the Walla Walla area while the Winnetts settled near Dayton.

Philip freighted between Walla Walla and the Idaho mines, bought eighty acres and staned farming, He acquired more land, fenced it all, planted orchards and raised stock and horses in addition to wheat, becoming one of the most successful farmers in the state. Since the organization of his school district, #8, he served as a school director.

ln 1896 he and Rachael moved into their new house at 834 Alder and he supervised the farm from town. Before his death in 1905 he gave the entire charge of the farm operation to two of his sons, William and Lewis.

Rachael Yenney was a very old lady when she died in 192$. John Yenney still remembers his great-grandmother retiring to her room after Sunday dinner where she enjoyed her corncob pipe.

The house was purchased by Dr. and Mrs. George McCany in 1943. Dr. McCarty, a naval officer in France during World War I, met Mlle. Marguerite de Poumayrac there. They were marri:!d in New York where he was discharged. Dr. McCarty died in 1945 and Mrs. McCarty remained in the house, a recluse with her cats, until 1973.

Wesley and Mary Fields purchased the house in 1974 and have completely restored the interior. The wrap-around windowed porch has been incorporated into the new kitchen, the only exterior alteration.

)

A plaque at· the front entrance: Yenney Town House

1896 Fields Residence

1974 This is a comfortable version of a Queen Anne style house.

Wide steps lead to both the two main entrances • the Alder Street entrance to a front hall with stairs to the second floor and French doors to the living room. The more-used Madison Street entrance is set at an angle in the bay, flanked by a massive stepped red brick chimney. It opens directly into the dining room. The door knobs on these doors are at eye level.

Simple squared columns on the wrap-around windowed porch, projecting dormers and varied window patterns add interest without ornamentation. The upper panes of the windows on the north and east side have permanent wooden screens in a diamond pattern and the windows in the living room and dining room arc topped by horizontal bands of small panes. There are two beveled leaded windows in the hall, matching the two in the barn!

Inside there is paneled wainscotting in the dining room with its beamed ceiling and sliding French doors between it and the living room which has a traditional mantel with egg and dart molding. Upstairs, over the porch is a solarium with a metal floor.

Architectural plans, professional maga:ines and a water color of the front elevation of the Court House with the name of Osterman and Siebert were found in the basement. How they came • to be stored in the house is a mystery. Was it possible Mr. Osterman designed this house?

A private residence.

WILLIAM I-I. YENNEY.

The great wheat fields of Walla Walla county and the surrounding sections of this state and of northern Oregon are always a matter of marvel to the traveler, who thinks of the west as a region of mines and of forests ancl little realizes what wonderful strides have been made along agricultural lines. Prominent in con .. ncclion with farming interests in 'Walla Walla county is William H. Yenney, who superintends his operations from his city home.

He was born in this county October t7. 18(,9, arnl i~ a son of .Philip an<l Rachael (Winnett) Yenney. He spent his early youth on the old home farm

and was educated in the district schools and in Whitman College, which he attended for two years. After reaching adult age he continued to remain on the old homestead and cooperated with his father in the latter's extensive farming and horse raising enterprises. Since his father's death he and his brother Lewis have operated the farm in partnership and are classed among the most successful agricultm.-isls of Walla \,Valla cmmly. ThcJ·e is no phase of progressive farming with which they arc not familiar and their thoroughly up-to-date methods produce splendid results. They have broad wheat ·fields and also produce other crops, while at the same time they arc extensively and successfully engaged in stock raising. In the spring of 1917 W. H. Yenney removed to Walla Walla, where he now lives in a handsome new residence at No. 20 Merriam street.

At Dayton, \i'vashington, Mr. Yenney was united in marriage to Miss Cora Edgell, a daughter of William and Sarah (Kuykendall) Edgell, of Illinois. To Mr. and Mrs. 'Yenney have been l>orn four children, namely: Frank, who is now on the home ranch; Philip, now a·ttending high school; and Clark and Richard, also in school. Philip Yenney is president of the champion football team of the norlhwest, which is the Walla Walla high school team. It has defeated all co.mpctitors in the northwest and also the Salt Lake City team.

Mr. and Mrs. Yenney arc acti:ve workers on committees for the successful prosecution of the war, being prominently connected with the work of the Red Cross, the Young Women's Christian Asso~iation and the Young Men's Christian Association. Mrs. Yenney is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and, like her husband, enjoys the warm regard and friendship of all with whom she has been associated. Her home is noted for its warm-hearted hospitality and is the center of a cultured society circle. Fraternally Mr. Yenney is connected with Washington Lodge, No. 19, I. 0. 0. F., and he gives his political allegiance to the democratic party. He is regarded as one of the foremost business men of Walla Walla county and there is no phase of modern day en~rise having to

LEWIS 0. YENNEY.

' Lewis 0. Yenney, a representative farmer of Walla Walla county, is· resid-ing at No. 834 East' Alder street in· the city of Walla Walla. He has spent hls entire Ii fe in this county, where his birth occurred on the 8th of May, 1872. He represents one of its o]d and prominent pioneer families, his pareµts being Philip J. and Rachael (Winnett) Yenney, who are mentioned elsewhere in this volume.

His youthful experiences were those of the farmbred boy. He spent his early life under the parental roof and was early trained to the best ~uethods of tilling_ the soil and caring for the crops. His education was acquired in the district schools, supplemented by study in Whitman College, and on reaching tnanhood he became the active assistant of his father and brother in the management of extensive farming interests. For some years prior to· the father's death the brothers had entire charge of the important agricultural business which he had built up. He gave to them each an interest in the farm and since his death they have continued its cultivatio~1 and improvement. It is equipped w~th_ all of the,

latest accessories and conveniences known to the model farm of the twentieth century. There are large ahd commodious buildings for the shelter of grain and ~tock and the latest improved machinery promotes the work of the fields.

Mr. Yenney resides with his mother and is looking after her interest, comfort and welfare in her old age, for she has now reached the age of eighty-five, having been born on the 22d of November, 1832. She is .remarkably well preserved for one of he.r years and keeps in touch with interests and events of modern clays. The fact that many of Mr. Yenney's warmest friends are those who have known · him froin his boyhood is an indication that his Ii £e has _been an active, useful and honorable one. For forty-five. years he has lived in this county and has witnessed much of its growth and development. He has seen its lands reclaimed and cultivated, its forests cut and_ its other· natural resources utilized. As the years have passed on he has borne his share in the work of general improvement an·d progress, while at the same time he has conducted his private business interests in a way that has brought very substantial results, and today Walla Walla county numbers him among her leading agriculturists.

THE ZUMWALT FAMILY

THE COVERED WAGON SETTLERS 1848 -1928

Levi Isaac Zumwalt

Levi was born March 16, 1848 in Franklin County, Missouri, the tenth child born to John Harrison and Lucinda (Hopkins) Zumwalt. There were in all eleven children in the family, five girls and six boys, the last son born one month following the father's death in June 1850. While Lucinda remained in Franklin County, some of the brothers and sisters made their home as adults in the Waynesville district, Robideaux township, Pulaski Co. where Levi grew up. Many other relatives lived in close proximity.

When the Civil War erupted, citizens of Missouri were called upon to register and volunteer for service in this War between the States. Older brothers Thomas and William enlisted in Co. F 8th Missouri Infantry together, the Confederate side of the War. Little is known of their personal service except that William was hospitalized in Yellville, Ark. from either wounds or disease and later died. Military records list being absent/ill in 1862 which may have actually been 1864. Levi at 17 yrs. enlisted but after a short period appears to have been

~ released from service. This was his first experience away from his family.

In family story, Levi could neither read nor write. However, new information surfaced a book, the revised edition of The Elementary Spelling Book by Noah Webster, published by D. Appleton & Co., in 1857. It contains Levi's signature in three places and is dated, presumably in his hand, June or July 26, 1867. He would have been 19, meaning after his experiences in the Civil War. Being away from family and in close quarters with fellow soldiers may have shown, as it had many other men, if you can't read or write, you can't keep in touch with home. This spelling book shows Levi made the decision to learn.

About this time, Levi is shown living in West Plains, Howell County, while most of his family were in nearby Pulaski County. On his visits to that district he found the woman he would marry.

Mariam Catherine Dobbs

Mariam Catherine was born February 11, 1854 in Cass township, Douglas County, Missouri to William. and Clarinda (McElroy) Dobbs. She was the middle of three daughters, between Polly and Nancy. Although as yet undocumented, family history believes the three Dobbs girls were orphaned between 1860 and 1870. Whether this may have resulted from the Civil War is unkown. In documents through the years, Mariam's first name varied widely (Maram, Mariam, Marian, Maryan, Mary, even just M.C.) but her middle name remained consistent. To family and friends, she was called Mollie, the name used from this point on.

Page 47: Mar. A-J • ~-• .-' i'II Al J --bJ,,.n- · 2018-09-08 · Uae n:vor10 aide: for addlllonal cbUdrcn. ocher lldea, refe1-once1 or Information. JAMES A. YEEND. James A. Yeend is a

When the 1870 census was taken on June 22, Mollie was shown as keeping house in the home of widow Elizabeth Brownfield and her two children. The Brownfield home was located in Robideaux township, Pulaski County, Missouri. Elizabeth may have been a McElroy, related to Mollie's mother. Older sister Polly was of a marriageable age and may have married by this year; younger sister Nancy is possibly the girl traced to the Ladies Protection and Relief Society (orphanage) in San Francisco, then lost.

The Marriage of Levi and Mariam

At 22 yrs. of age, Levi Isaac Zumwalt married 16-year-old Mariam Catherine Dobbs on Nov. 10, 1870 at the home of his brother Thomas. One wedding gift was a large family Bible, the only entry being their wedding event. (This Bible, printed in 1869, is with their great-granddaughter, Nancy Johnson.} The newly married couple settled in West Plains where their first three children were born. Daughter Julia Ann Zumwalt was born Nov. 12, 1871 followed by second daughter Sarah Ellen Zumwalt on April 4, 1873. A son, Oliver Webb Zumwalt was born April 29, 1875, called Web by his family.

A New Life In A New Territory

~ Levi, Mollie and their three children joined a wagon train in 1876 with the destination of Washington Territory. This included other Zumwalt family members; at least one brother Christopher Dudley Zumwalt and his family, and sisters who had married and had new surnames of Lemmons and Barnes. A Zumwalt train had made this trip much earlier in 1854, as noted in other covered wagon train diaries, some of the family settling in Colorado, others in Oregon Territory. The 1876 train detoured to Denver, Colorado, where some family left the train and other earlier settlers joined to continue on to Oregon Territory by the Overland Trail. Winter coming on, the train stopped in Longmont, Colorado, where a diptheria epidemic killed many of the travelers. Levi and Mollie's son Webb fell ill with diptheria, died, and was buried in Longmont on Sept. 12, 1876; only 17 months old. Sarah, also near death, survived. Levi began the trip with oxen, finishing with horses. The train continued when health and weather improved in spring of the following year.

By 1877, railroad travel to cross the country had experienced an overwhelming introduction and passed on to commonplace; travel by wagon train was waning. There remained a great need for other railroad routes, regional lines and competing railroad companies to prevent monopolization of this new industry in the west. The many wagon trains still crossing, including this Zumwalt group, often followed close to the railroad tracks for great distances and passengers on both types of travel would wave in passing, but wagons had other destinations to reach off the routes of the railroads.

Completing a difficult and sad journey, the families arrived in the Walla Walla County area, some settling in what is now Idaho. Mollie was pregnant with

their fourth child, a daughter Malinda who was born November 4, 1877 in their new home country. They found a place to begin near Waitsburg, a growing township in the midst of verdant farm and forest country. Many Zumwalt families settling in this and nearby counties were farmers and those who settled in earlier years assisted the new arrivals.

Levi farmed but also put his money to use loaning to others on interest. He kept a record book of these loans and would sign his name with his personal X. This book may still exist among other possessions passed down to the hands of Levi's great-granddaughter.

Levi is Murdered

A tragic event occurred about eighteen months after arrival. Levi was shot and killed by his niece's husband, William Russell, whose wife Fidelia was the daughter of Levi's oldest sister, Sintha Ann Barnes. Levi and his young daughter were traveling in his wagon in the Coppei Creek/Whiskey Creek area when Russell approached, angry and armed with a hand pistol. It was said there was an old grudge between them or Russell took offense at something Levi had said about his wife, and Russell demanded Levi explain himself. Levi had only his wagon whip and when he approached, Russell shot him several times. In some manner, Levi was able to get home with his daughter, perhaps with Russell's aid. Mollie hurriedly sent Sarah for the family Bible and read to him as he died.

This incident was widely reported in newspapers as far away as Portland, Oregon, including the trial and sentencing of Mr. Russell. Quoting from the Davenport Times, "May, 1879 MAN MURDERED Last Saturday, May 10, One Levi Zumwalt was murdered by Wm. 8. Russell on Coppei Creek about 12 miles from Dayton. The murderer rode into this city the evening he committed the murder and gave himself up to the sheriff who took him into custody." Mr. Russell was tried and sentenced to 14 years hard labor which he served at Tacoma, Washington. His wife, Fidelia divorced him in 1882, remarried and lived with her second husband in Spokane, WA. In later years, Fidelia or a relative came to Mollie's home and apologized for Mr. Russell's act.

The prominent Turner family, one of the first to settle the Waitsburg surrounding lands, generously gifted the widow with 40 acres of fenced land and would build a home for her family.

It is unknown where Levi was buried, but may be one of six graves near Mollie's original property. Although the years Levi and Mollie had together were relatively few, just under ten, they were very active years and through these two people the direct line of this family continues. Mollie was suddenly a widow at 25 years of age with three young girls to raise and land in early development. She applied for a land patent which was granted in 1882 and made Waitsburg her permanent home. This appears to be a purchase of land, rather than the process of homesteading.

Mollie Remarries

Mollie met John B. Sampson, a substantial man twenty years her senior whom she married November 25, 1880 which successfully continued for 38 years. John established the first butcher shop in Waitsburg with other land nearby resulting in the family moving into Waitsburg town. He was there beside Mollie as a reliable stepfather for the daughters' growing years. Many relatives lived within visiting distance, and Mollie maintained strong ties to the Zumwalt families. Not forgetting those still in Missouri, Mollie and the girls sent letters and gifts. In one letter, Mollie asked cousin Byron Zumwalt if he went to church which showed this to be an important part of her own life.

Waitsburg was a good place for a family to grow. A portrait taken about 1890 shows an attractive, prosperous and confident family: John in a welltailored three-piece suit, watch and chain, with neatly combed white hair and flowing beard; Mollie in a fine gown and, as with Julia and Sarah, coiffed and dressed in current styles. Malinda appears to be 12 - 13 years of age, appropriately dressed to allow for physical changes of a growing young lady.

The Middle Years

Normal life - school, church, community activites shared with cousins and friends - filled the years. In time, the girls each met and married young men from Waitsburg and surrounding community.

THE CALLAHANS: Sarah, the second daughter, married Robert Callahan January 1, 1895, made their permanent home in Waitsburg and raised three children, Opal, Ivan and Lillian. In family story, Sarah was said to be the more serious and religious one, the Christian Church being an important part of her life.

Opal, their oldest child, married and had four children. She died in 1985 in Pendleton, Oregon at the age of 89. Ivan Callahan, born in 1902, is recalled as a big man. He suffered a stroke while living in Vallejo, CA in the fifties and died 1956 in Walla Walla, leaving no descendants. Youngest daughter Lillian was born 1904 in Waitsburg, married and had a son Thomas Reynolds and daughter Nancy (Reynolds) Johnson. Lillian lived many years in Walla Walla, dying in April 2008 at the age of 104 years, buried in Waitsburg.

After her husband Robert's death in 1939, Sarah bought a little house in Walla Walla to live near daughter Lillian. Only Malinda was left in Waitsburg and the sisters' relationship had suffered for many years. When Sarah died April 18, 1959 in Walla Walla, she was buried next to her husband in Waitsburg City Cemetery. Sarah had outlived all of this Zumwalt family.

THE WHITES: Eldest daughter, Julia Ann Zumwalt, met a Waitsburg native, Harry Clifford White, son of a rancher. They married July 2, 1895, six

Page 50: Mar. A-J • ~-• .-' i'II Al J --bJ,,.n- · 2018-09-08 · Uae n:vor10 aide: for addlllonal cbUdrcn. ocher lldea, refe1-once1 or Information. JAMES A. YEEND. James A. Yeend is a

months following Sarah's wedding. Julia and Harry began their life in Waitsburg before moving to nearby Dayton where their family grew to seven children. Sarah, in later years, would occasionally take the train with daughter Lillian to visit Julia's family in Dayton. The family's direct line continues through the Whites; their history is told in their own story.

THE STEWARTS: Malinda, the youngest daughter, married John Mansfield Stewart in Waitsburg. They raised two children, Harriet and Harry (known as Bud). Malinda is remembered by Waitsburg old-timers as having a dress shop (for repairs) on the second floor of a business on Main Street. She and John had a large, three-story home nearby the business district where he kept a barber shop and she "marcelled" ladies' hair when the fashion came in. Niece Odetta remembers "Aunt Lindy'', as a fun and very sweet person. Malinda died in 1947, living 20 years past John. Both are buried at Waitsburg City Cemetery.

Bud was born with a deformity but lived a successful life as a gambler, remembered by the town as the real card shark of the local pool halls. He never married nor had children, in later life living comfortably at the Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla. Bud and his sister Harriett maintained a close relationship.

Harriet married Charles Vollmer who had the farm adjoining hers, ~ combining them into one large farm. In their later years, they sold it and built a

retirement residence in town, where she lived out her life alone; Charles died before the house was finished. Having no children of their own, their entire estate was left to the City of Waitsburg. There were no remaining descendants of Malinda and John's marriage.

The Older Years

Beginning the 20th Century, Mollie and John continued in their home on Preston Street. A picture of them with their dog, taken in 1912, shows them sitting in the front yard of their charming house, contentedly enjoying the passing of time. They had a large family in town and Julia and Harry's children visited periodically. John died in 1918 at age 85 and was buried in the family plot at Waitsburg City Cemetery. Mollie planted a small tree near John's grave. Every few days, she and granddaughter Lillian, living only two doors away, would walk along the railroad tracks to the cemetery with a bucket of water to nourish its growth.

Mollie had been one of the early pioneers of the area. She became a member of the First Day Adventist Church, but the family often attended the Christian Church. She was credited with living a good and faithful life; a friend to the community. There remains Mollie's hymnal, the New Jubilee Harp copyrighted 1881.

Sarah and Lillian's memories of Mollie leave some images of the woman she was in her mature years. Her home was a place of music, as this interest

Page 51: Mar. A-J • ~-• .-' i'II Al J --bJ,,.n- · 2018-09-08 · Uae n:vor10 aide: for addlllonal cbUdrcn. ocher lldea, refe1-once1 or Information. JAMES A. YEEND. James A. Yeend is a

passed to her children's homes. Sewing and quilting, while necessities of the early years, were also pleasures shared, leaving behind hand-stitched star quilt pieces and complete quilts which descendants will cherish. Lillian recalls her mother Sarah as a stern, critical woman throughout her life, but Grannie (Mollie) was gentle and always a welcoming comforter. The picture of the Sampson home shows an abundance of plants and flowers, of lovely detail and was known to be well-kept. Many years later, after Mollie's passing, her home was severely flood-damaged and had to be demolished.

In January, 1928, Mollie's health took a bad turn and on the 23rd of the month, she died at daughter Sarah's home of cholecystitis, three weeks after daughter Julia's death in Dayton. Mollie was 7 4 years old, had outlived her first husband Levi by 49 years and her second husband, John, by 10 years. Funeral services were held at the Callahan home with the pastor of the Christian church giving the sermon. Mollie was buried January 25, 1928 in the family plot at Waitsburg City Cemetery near John. In coming years all immediate family members except Julia would be buried there, shaded by the tree Mollie had planted years earlier.

Mollie - Mariam Catherine Dobbs Zumwalt Sampson - leaves the image of a woman who worked hard her entire life at whatever was put before her. She took on some of the most difficult challenges of the mid-1800's, not allowing any misfortune to stop her life moving forward. The rewards of a good life were hers, and she had earned them.

More Murder.----Last Saturday, May 10, One Levi Zumwalt was murdered by Wm. B. Russell, on Coppei creek about 12 miles from Dayton. The murderer rode into this city the evening he committed the murder and gave himself up to the sheriff who took him into custody. Russell had a trial before Justice Hunt on Tuesday last, Mr. Weatherford prosecuted the case, while Mr. Baker defended it. Several witnesses were sworn and testified, but the testimondy failed to prove anything definite, farther than the statement of Russell who acknkowledged the murder and claimed he could prove his provocation was sufficient to justify the horrible tragedy. A little daughter of the murdered man was the only eye witness to the affray, but her testimony was not given. Defendant offered no testimony. Local prejudice was very strong against Russell who was bound over to the disposal of the grand jury. When the case is decided and developed, we will give it in full that the public may see for itself, the causes of the crime and the decisions of the court. ~- .
