TEACHER BIBLE STUDY Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus
Luke 16:19-‐31 In Luke 16, Jesus taught His disciples about money. The Pharisees listened, and they did not like what they heard. The Pharisees loved money. (See Luke 16:14.) Then Jesus told them a parable about two men. The first man was rich, wearing expensive clothes and feasting daily. The second man, whose name was Lazarus, was poor and sick. He sat outside the rich man’s gate. Lazarus suffered greatly, and he died. Then the rich man died too.
Nothing the rich man had on earth helped him in eternity. The parable reveals that the rich man went to Hades. Hades is a Greek word that translates to “hell,” the place of the dead. Luke says that the rich man was in torment there. (Luke 16:23) He looked up and saw Abraham, the father of the Jewish faith. At Abraham’s side was the poor man, Lazarus. Lazarus was comforted in heaven while the rich man suffered in hell. There is a great chasm between heaven and hell, and no one can cross it. No one can change his mind and trust in Jesus after he has died.
Remember that having wealth on earth is not a sin, and living in poverty is not a one-‐way ticket to heaven. Lazarus was saved by faith, but the rich man was consumed by his wealth. He devoted his life to living in luxury, and he did not love God or other people. In his suffering, he asked Abraham to warn his brothers.
Abraham refused. Sending Lazarus would not help. The rich man’s brothers had access to God’s Word, and Scripture is clear about salvation. Even a miracle would not convince the brothers, as Jesus raised His friend Lazarus from the dead and the religious leaders still plotted to kill Him. (See John 11:43-‐53.)
As you teach kids about Jesus’ parable, clearly share the gospel. Getting into heaven has nothing to do with who you know, what you wear, or what you do. Entering into heaven requires faith in Jesus, the Son of God. The Bible says those who trust in Jesus will be with God forever, but those who reject Him will suffer without God forever.

me choosing a snack, or at least trying to. Sometimes when I’m not getting someone popcorn or taking tickets to see a movie, I’ll buy myself a snack and watch part of the movie. I seem to always struggle when deciding what I want as a snack. Which do you think I should choose? We all have choices to make, and some of those choices are bigger than others.
That reminds me of a very sad story in the Bible about a man who didn’t make the right choice about following God. Why don’t we find out more?
Big picture question (1 minute) Leader • Great job. So this week’s big picture question is about something very serious, but the Bible has a lot to say about it! Here it is: What happens when we die? Let’s listen carefully to the Bible story for the answer.
Timeline map (2 minutes) Leader • These are the Bible stories we’ve learned about so far. All of them are parables, or stories, Jesus told to teach people about God and His kingdom. The first one was about some vineyard workers and a landowner. Why does God give good gifts? God gives good gifts because He is generous. Then we learned about heaven being like a wedding feast. Everyone is invited to the kingdom of heaven, but few will choose to come. And finally, we learned about the faithful servant. Do you remember the answer to our big picture question, What will happen to the wise and faithful servant? The wise and faithful servant will be rewarded.

THE BIBLE STORY Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus
Luke 16:19-‐31 Jesus had been teaching His disciples. He told them parables, or stories, to help them understand things about God and His kingdom. One day, Jesus told His disciples a parable about a rich man and a poor man.
Jesus said, “Every day, a rich man dressed in nice clothes—purple and fine linen. He ate whatever he wanted. But a poor man named Lazarus sat at the rich man’s gate. Lazarus’s body was covered with sores, and he was hungry. Lazarus wished he could eat even the crumbs and scraps of food that fell on the floor under the rich man’s table. Instead, wild dogs came and licked his sores.
“One day, Lazarus died. The angels carried him to heaven, where Abraham was. The rich man died too, and he was buried. The rich man did not go to heaven; he suffered without God in the place where there is sadness and pain. The rich man looked up, and he could see Abraham far away in heaven with Lazarus.
“The rich man called out, ‘Father Abraham! Have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to help me. I am suffering!’
“Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember your life. You had so many good things, and Lazarus had nothing but trouble. Now Lazarus is comforted here, while you are suffering.’
“Then Abraham said, ‘There is a great divide between us, like a pit, and no one from here can cross over to you; neither can anyone from there cross over to us.’
“The rich man said, ‘Then father Abraham, please send Lazarus to my father’s house on earth. I have five brothers. He could warn them so that they will not come to this place of suffering and pain too.’
“But Abraham said, ‘They have the Scriptures—the Law of Moses and the writings of the prophets. They should read and learn from that.’ “The rich man argued, ‘No, father Abraham! But if someone came
to them from the dead, then they will repent. They will turn from their sin and turn to God.’
“But Abraham said, ‘If they don’t listen to the Scriptures, to Moses and the prophets, then they will not listen even if someone comes back from the dead.’ ”
Christ Connection: Those who receive salvation from Jesus have changed hearts; they treasure Jesus above any earthly treasure. Getting into heaven has nothing to do with who you know, what you wear, or what you do. Entering into heaven requires faith in Jesus, the Son of God.

DISCUSSION: Leader • The parable Jesus told is about more than a rich man and a poor man. Jesus taught something about heaven. Jesus’ story was about a rich man who had everything—a big house, lots of food, and nice clothes. A man named Lazarus had nothing. He sat outside the rich man’s house and hoped to eat some of the crumbs that fell off the rich man’s table.
Both of the men died. Lazarus went to heaven. He trusted in Jesus. But the rich man suffered. He was rich on earth, but his sin kept him from being with God. He had not loved and trusted in God. Now that he was dead, no one could help the rich man; it was too late. So the rich man asked for Lazarus to warn his brothers about the terrible suffering that happens if someone dies apart from God. Abraham said that the brothers had already been warned because they had God’s Word, which tells people the truth about Jesus.
What happens when we die? Those who trust in Jesus will be with God forever. Those who reject Him will suffer without God forever.
The Bible says that everyone sins. (Rom. 6:23) Our sin keeps us out of heaven. The Bible also says that God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to die on the cross to take the punishment we deserve for our sin. Getting into heaven has nothing to do with who you know, what you wear, or what you do. Entering into heaven requires faith in Jesus, the Son of God. We can trust in Him as Lord and Savior.
Questions: Ask the following review questions:
1. Who sat at the rich man’s gate? (Lazarus, Luke 16:19-‐20) 2. Why did Lazarus sit outside the rich man’s gate? (He was poor, sick, and hungry; Luke
16:20-‐21) 3. What happened to the rich man when he died? (He went to a place of torment, Luke
16:23) 4. What happened to Lazarus? (He was comforted in heaven, Luke 16:25) 5. What happens when we die? Those who trust in Jesus will be with God forever. Those
who reject Him will suffer without God forever.
The Gospel: God’s Plan for Me (optional) Using Scripture and the guide provided, explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Tell kids how they can respond, and provide counselors to speak with each kid individually. Guide counselors to use open-‐ended questions to allow kids to determine the direction of the conversation. Encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.

Key passage (5 minutes) • Key Passage Slide or Poster
• “Secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven” song
Display the key passage poster. Lead the kids to read it aloud together. Encourage kids who have memorized the key passage to recite it from memory.
Leader • Jesus often taught with parables, or stories. These stories helped people understand what is true about God and His kingdom. Some people who heard Jesus’ parables did not understand what they meant. Jesus knew not everyone would believe the truth if they heard it.
In today’s parable, “Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus,” Jesus taught about life after death. What happens when we die? Those who trust in Jesus will be with God forever. Those who reject Him will suffer without God forever.
Prayer (2 minutes) Leader • What happens when we die? Those who trust in Jesus will be with God forever. Those who reject Him will suffer without God forever. This is very important. If we believe this is true, we should tell others about Jesus before it is too late. Let’s pray.
Lead kids in a time of prayer. Pray for people who do not know Jesus as Lord and Savior. Ask God for opportunities to tell others the good news about Jesus. Thank God for sending Jesus to take the punishment we deserve for our sins so we can be with God forever.
DISMISS TO SMALL GROUPS Please be VERY slow and orderly with dismissing to small groups to keep kids safe:

The Gospel: God’s Plan for Me Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.
God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-‐17 aloud and explain what these verses mean.
We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)
God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-‐9.
Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18.
We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-‐10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He’s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.
Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus.
