Anyone had enough cloudy, rainy weather? I sure have.

Reminds me of winters up north where you don’t see the sun for

weeks or months at a time. I moved south for a reason – the

sun!

Have had some fun helping a couple of young gentleman with a

homebuilt project. Nandi’s sons Jay

and Dev had a school project that

involves a wind turbine. As part of

the experiment they wanted to put a

shroud around it to see if that improved the efficiency. So, they came

over to my shop and we

cut some aluminum

strips to make the

shroud. They learned

about cutting, filing,

watch them learn. The boys won 3rd place with their project. They ran the wind turbine with and

without the shroud to see if there was any efficiencies from the shroud. They demonstrated a 4%

increase in efficiency with the shroud attached.

Maybe someday they can build their dad an RV-12. I bet if they do, Nandi will never get to fly it –

they’ll be in it all the time!

Fly safe!

March Meeting: The March meeting will be at Daniel Field, in the upstairs conference room. Our presentation will be

about flying in Antarctica from Dave Rossi, who spent quite a bit of time down there. There will be

coffee, pastries, and other goodies. If you feel like baking and bringing something along, by all means

please do! After the meeting, the plan is to go to lunch over at the Village Cafe. Hope you’ll join us!

This month’s Night Out/Eat Out will be at the Southbound Smokehouse at 1855 Central Avenue,

Augusta, (706) 733-5464. We’ll meet about 6:30PM on Thursday, March 28th. Please join us -- we try

to get there a little early for socializing and beverages!

February Meeting Minutes: Thanks to all who came to Augusta Regional Airport for the tour of StandardAero. We had a good

showing of 27 members, and four guests.

There was no actual meeting, so no

minutes/items were discussed. The tour of

StandardAero’s facility was conducted by

David Coley, who showed us the airframe

overhauls, and Chris Jones who provided

details of their engine support services. We

were split into two groups where each

learned about Standard’s Major Periodical

Inspections (MPI) and Core Zone

Inspections (CZI) of the Honeywell TFE731

turbofan engines, overhaul capability of

TPE331 turboprop engines, line service and

“minor” servicing of the HTF7000 engines,

and full overhaul capability of the GTCP36-

150 series auxiliary power units (APUs).

We also heard about

their scheduled

airframe inspection

and repair services as

well as avionics

services and

installations. There

were Bombardier

Challengers, Dassault

Falcon 90s & 2000s,

an Embraer Legacy, a

few Hawkers, and a

couple of Learjets all

in various states of

disassembly! Many thanks to David and Chris who took time out of their Saturday morning to

provide the tours.

More From the President’s Desk

All, I recently received this letter from Light Sport USA. I don’t usually post advertising material, but

this sounds like a pretty good deal if you’re looking to upgrade your avionics and/or your panel!

NAME THAT AIRPLANE?

This month’s homebuilt is a scratch-build from plans, similar to last month’s airplane. The design

has won several ‘Grand Champion, Plan-built Aircraft’ awards at Oshkosh through the years. Plans

are available online for free, and yours to download if you can identify this aircraft!

Last month’s ‘name that airplane’ was a Stolp SA-500 Starlet. There aren’t many out there,

but this tube & fabric aircraft is available as a “plans” airplane from Aircraft Spruce. The

Bi-plane version is called the Starduster. This particular airframe, N23ME, resides in

Arizona.
