One Maple Ridge house hasbecome known far and wide forits all-out Halloween display.

The Peacock family has beendecorating its house on River

Road for Halloween for 15 years,and it has become a destinationfor trick-or-treaters.

It’s commonly referred to asthe “spider-web house,” saidTerry Peacock, whose three chil-dren seriously get right into theHalloween spirit.

A giant spider in its enormousweb is just part of the front-lawndisplay which grows every yearwith recycled decorations – likea discarded wedding arch – withadded ghoulish twists.

As they decorate, they getpeople honking and thankingthem for putting up the display,and some years on Oct. 31,they get upwards of 200 trick-or-treaters. People come fromas far as Abbotsford and NewWestminster. And no matterwhat age, they are welcome atthe Peacocks’ door.

“I don’t care what age youare... as long as you’re in cos-tume,” Peacock said.

They continue to do it partly

because it’s a family tradition,but partly because it’s part ofthe community, Peacock said.

The neighbours also get intothe spirit, and provide music onHalloween to go with the dis-play.

The family puts up five ofeverything, as there are fivepeople in the family – or were– until the father passed awayfrom cancer related to smoking.

Hence, the tombstone withthe epitaph “R.I.P. Here lies the

last person who smoked in myhouse.”

Peacock said her husbandwould have thought that tomb-stone was hilarious.

The sign is especially poign-ant, as the teens’ grandmother isstruggling with cancer as well.

This year on Hallow’s Eve, thefamily will be collecting dona-tions for the Canadian CancerSociety.

The Peacock home is at 21110River Road.

TransLink might reduce service onthe two routes that have the lowestregional ridership – the C-48 and C-49.

The two most under-utilized bus routes inthe TransLink area, both in Maple Ridge, arebeing considered for cuts.

The Thornhill and River Road portions ofthe C-48 bus and several kilometres on theRuskin loop of the C-49 are the proposedcuts, which would be part of the “optimiza-tion” of TransLink services, said the transit

authority’s spokesperson Derek Zobel.TransLink is proposing to change the C-48

so that it will loop along McClure Avenue,which has more density than the rural areas,but not go into Thornhill, Zobel said.

The C-49, which currently goes down280th Street from Dewdney Trunk Road toLougheed Highway and up 272nd, will cutthrough along 112th from 280th Street to272nd.

These proposed changes will be pre-sented in detail at an open house in earlyDecember, and, if approved, will take effectin the fall of 2013.

“Nothing is set in stone,” Zobel said.“[TransLink wants] to seek public input.”

Zobel said these two lines get the lowest

ridership in all of TransLink with five to 14people during peak hours on the C-48. TheC-49 has low ridership as well.

The proposed changes are part of a serviceoptimization plan and reallocation of servi-ces from routes that are under-utilized intomore productive areas, Zobel said.

Kim Day, executive director of the RidgeMeadows Recycling Society, said several oftheir employees use the C-48 bus route andthey need the route “because a lot of ourpeople with disabilities don’t drive.” Therecycling depot employs a couple dozenpeople with developmental disabilities.

A public open house on the bus servicechanges will be held on Dec. 6 from 4 to7:30 p.m. at The ACT.

“When grown men arescreaming and women arecrying you know you’ve donea good job, it’s a good indica-tor,” said Lorraine Bates, oneof the event organizers.

So far the event has attract-ed 2,000 brave souls andbrought in $13,000.

“Everyone is saying thatthe haunted house is bet-ter than the PNE’s hauntedhouse, which is what theysaid last year too,” said

Bates.“We had a really good

crowd this weekend.Saturday and Sunday hadabout the same attendance,”added Bates.

Oct. 30 is always a big day.The annual haunted house isexpecting a surprise at 6:55p.m., five minutes before thefinale fireworks display.

“This is what does myheart good – when volunteersare already talking about nextyear,” Bates said.

Last year, each group thatvolunteered to build GhostRidge made $4,900. Profitswill be split again this year.

Bonson land sellsResidents will be consulted before any residentialbuilding starts on 4.65 hectares in Pitt Meadows.


Pitt Meadows is $12.25 million richer after the sale ofthe City’s property at 11431 Bonson Rd.

The 4.65-hectare site located south of Airport Way andwest of Bonson Road was sold to the Onni Group.

The site is designated for residential development inthe Official Community Plan and will be developed formedium-density housing similar to Osprey Village.

The agreement had been nearly two years in the mak-ing, said Mayor Deb Walters. After a request for expres-sions of interest was released by the City in 2011, anumber of proposals were received.

“We were very fortunate to sell when we did and thepurchase price was right in line with our independent

market projections,” Walters said.“We must be strategic in how we

use these dollars. We need to con-tinue to think long term and ensurethat we are still in a positive placea decade or more from now,” sheadded.

Three-quarters of the sale pro-ceeds, or a little more than $9 mil-lion, will be used to pay down someof the borrowing incurred for com-munity projects such as the arenarefurbishing and drainage improve-ments.

The balance of about $3.05 mil-lion could be used to further reduce debt or fund futureinfrastructure projects or reserves.

Council will discuss funding issues as they move intobusiness planning later this fall, Walters said.

Next steps for the development will require the sub-mission of a rezoning application and a public consulta-tion to gather feedback on design and land use.

The City expects an application to be made by thedeveloper in late 2012 through 2013.

“Onni has had a successful partnership working withthe City of Pitt Meadows for the past decade on suchdevelopments as Meadowtown Centre and the GoldenEars Business Park,” said vice-president of developmentBeau Jarvis.

“The City of Pitt Meadows is a well-planned commun-ity offering citizens a mix of rural and urban lifestyles ina natural setting with all the city amenities,” he added.

The legion in Maple Ridge will beflooded with memories this Sundaywhen entertainer Linda Jones sings.

Linda Jones has a deep-rooted connec-tion with veterans.

The respect the Maple Ridge entertainerhas for the men and women who serve– and have served – their country is lit-erally in her blood.

Her grandfather was a First World Warveteran and during the Second WorldWar, Jones’ father Trevor Nash was amember of the Saskatoon Light Infantry(SLI).

Nash survived not only the war but alsothe London Blitz, one of the most notori-ous bombings of Britain.

He was working overtime, puttingbarbed wire in place to make strategicareas inaccessible for the enemy, whenGerman bombs fell on London on Sept. 7,1940.

Nash passed away five years ago. Hisdaughter dedicates her concerts to himand all the Canadian veterans, past andpresent, who fought for freedom duringthe two world wars of the 20th century.

Jones describes herself as a “varietyentertainer.”

“I run the gamut from old Klondikeshows with the flaunts and feathers andfun stuff and I work through the early1900s into the First World War,” she said.“I used to entertain a lot of First WorldWar vets. My forte is the ’40s but I alsodo comedy – everything you can thinkof.”

Jones also wrote a country music CD,Stepping Out.

She started singing for veterans aftermeeting a couple who once performed ina nightclub in downtown Vancouver manyyears ago. The husband was a veteran, arecipient of a military medal for bravery.

“He took a bunch of guys out a burningammunition truck,” Jones said.

As time passed, the trio entertained atballroom dances and regular dance clubs.

One day, Jones suggested that they per-form variety shows.

“They took me under their wing andshowed me a lot of stuff,” Jones said.

She was already familiar with much ofthe music from that era, having heard herdad sing the ditties around the house.

“So I had an affinity for it,” Jones said.“I saw there was music of every genrethat you could think of, but there wasnobody doing the veterans’ songs any-more. There was nobody bringing backtheir memories. They were the ones whogave us the freedom to listen to the kindof music we like.”

Jones continues this tradition of filling

that void this Sunday (Nov. 4) startingat 3 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion,Branch 88, in Maple Ridge. Accompaniedby keyboardist Patty McGregor, she willperform songs from the Second WorldWar era, and to add levity, will sprinkle inbits of comedy. She appears in costumesof that era and her version of a Canadianmilitary uniform.

The show is open to the public.“This is my seventh year running for

performing for this particular prelude toRemembrance Day,” Jones said.

Among the songs she sings at theseshows: Vera Lynn classics such as WhiteCliffs of Dover, When the Lights Go OnAgain, I’ll Pray for You, and carry-oversfrom the First World War such as It’s ALong Way To Tipperary and Pack Up YourTroubles in Your Old Kit Bag.

When she sings these songs, Jones oftensees veterans singing them right back toher.

“I’ve dedicated mycareer to them [veterans],”Jones said. “They’ve beensuch a true blessing in mylife and I really get quiteemotional about thembecause so many mem-ories come back for mewhen I’m singing. I haveto really concentrate some-times because I get drawnin.”

She sees her dad in theveterans’ faces.

The Lynn song You’llNever Know is one thattouches Jones deeply. She

sang it to her father whenever he came toher shows.

The lyrics are, in part, You’ll never knowjust how much I miss you. You’ll neverknow just how much I care. And if I tried,I still couldn’t hide the love for you.

Years ago, Jones performed at the WhiteRock legion. When she was finished, aFirst World War veteran approached her,cane in hand for support, tears rollingdown his cheeks.

He shook Jones’ hand.“He said ‘Thank you so much. You

brought back so many memories. Somegood, some bad, but it’s been a fantasticday,’” Jones related. “That’s when I knewI was doing what I meant to do.”

Her efforts in keeping those mem-ories alive were recognized in April,2008 with a Minister of Veterans AffairsCommendation award.

“It’s essentially an award that was cre-ated for veterans in aid and service andsupport of other veterans,” Jones said.“Occasionally, a non-veteran can be arecipient, so I was honoured to be arecipient of that. It was like the icing onthe cake of a very long, very happy, andvery proud career.”

The submission processis open to everyone, andforms along with furtherinformation are availableat the Maple Ridge ArtGallery website (www.theactmapleridge.org/gal-lery-submissions). Hardcopies are available in thegallery and at the ticketcentre at The ACT.

Artists are asked to submit work thatsuggests an “ensemble.”

“This could be a shared theme, med-ium, or any series of works that suggestsunity in its display,” said Maple Ridge ArtGallery curator Barbara Duncan.

“The fact that the show includes all

mediums tends to encour-age a lot of variety andsome unexpected andunusual items,” she added.“The ‘ensemble’ displayformat works well in thecapacious Maple RidgeGallery where smallerworks can sometimes beoverwhelmed by the largevolume of space.”

The show also repre-sents an opportunity tofind a unique gift, and therelatively reasonable pricepoint of many of theseartworks offers visitors anaffordable entry point tobuying original work.

The purpose of the amendment is to aid in its interpretation and administration and to ensurethat the regulations are consistent with the City’s intent.

Section 12.2.2 – Mainstreet Commercial, Permitted UsesTo add “Chapel” to the list of permitted uses and to include a new definition of “Chapel” in Sec-tion 2.3, General Definitions.

A small spotlight is fixedupwards onto its torso andpowerful wings. The light castsan ominous shadow off thesculpture and onto the back wallto accentuate a daunting pres-ence.

Consciouslyor not, enteringthe room, one isdrawn to it, mak-ing it the centre-piece of sculptorDanielle Swift’seclectic BrokenNarrative exhibit,showing at TheACT gallery untilNov. 17.

Swift, who grewup in Maple Ridgeand now lives inEast Vancouverwhere her studiois located, said theharpy, Podarge, or “fleet-foot,”was nspired by her own historyand that of harpies in literature.

The piece, made mostly outof beeswax and fabric, was twoyears in the making.

In Greek mythology, harpiesdevolve into hideous and filthycreatures.

“I was interested in exploring

that evolution as well as bring-ing the harpy back to, or atleast closer to, her original form– beautiful as well as powerful,”Swift explained.

Once it returns to her studio,she will be making a few chan-ges to the piece.

“I guess you could say she’sstill a work in progress,” Swiftsaid. “I didn’t physically workon her every day for two yearsbut often hit a wall and neededto step away and think about mynext move before continuing.”

Swift’s exhibit includes a shortvideo that profiles the artist inher studio working with con-crete, steel, and beeswax, theessential elements in her largelyfigurative oeuvre.

The 30-year-oldhas been pursuingthe arts profes-sionally for nearlyseven years andher imagina-tion comes aliveinside the gallery.A graduate ofthe University ofthe Fraser Valleyfine art program,Swift teaches artto young studentspart-time at theArts Centre andTheatre (ACT).

The conceptsfor her pieces come from manyareas of life.

“It could be advertising, litera-ture, an experience or good story,philosophy or a stranger on thestreet,” she said. “It is usually acombination of these things.”

Swift said that’s why she hasa hard time verbalizing her workand the meaning behind it.

“I have many ideas from manysources that I put into one visualpiece.

“It becomes too difficult toorganize them into a single orlinear train of thought. I guessthat’s why I had to pursue the

visual arts and not the written,”Swift said.

The title of both the exhibitionand video refers to the story-telling component exhibited inSwift’s work, as suggested by theregular appearance of harpies

and other semi-mythical beings.Also on view in the gallery are

mixed-media paintings by AshleyPaquette, whose work wasselected for its thematic affinitieswith Swift’s work.

Poppy pinsa small price

None of us born in the years sincethe Second World War ended are everlikely to see such dark days.

Though we’ve seen the Cold War,terrorism, and dozens of far-off wars,for the most part, Canadians have beencocooned in a bubble of peace at homefor nearly 70 years.

It’s easy to forget that the war wasmore than grainy footage on a cable-channel retrospective. Hundreds ofthousands of young men and womenfrom Canada, and millions world wide,went off to fight and die. Many veter-ans are still alive and carry memoriesof Dieppe, Juno Beach, Sicily, and theNetherlands. Others recall the sound ofdepth charges dropping into the choppyNorth Atlantic, or the boom of anti-air-craft guns over occupied Europe.

Starting this week, we will again seemembers of the Royal Canadian Legiongiving out poppy pins and collectingdonations. Wear a pin, and drop somemoney in the box. The money in thePoppy Fund goes to veterans and theirdependents, to help with everythingfrom expenses to adding small comfortsduring a long hospital stay.

While the veterans of the First WorldWar are now gone, and there are fewerveterans of the Korean War and theSecond World War, Canada is makingnew veterans every year. Thousandshave served overseas in Afghanistan,along with thousands more who woreblue helmets in peacekeeping, or whosat nervously on bases in Europe, wait-ing for a third world war that nevercame.

Whether you agree with some ofCanada’s wars or not, the poppy cam-paign helps those who have volunteeredto put their lives on the line, usuallyfor less pay than they could have foundstaying at home.

So wear a poppy, in commemora-tion of the sacrifices of those who havecome before us, and in fervent hopethat no future generation will be askedto risk their lives again to keep us safe.

If you happen to peekover your neighbours’ fenceand you happen to noticethey are building a very,very large swimming pool,you might ask yourself, arethey planning on adopting abeluga whale – one that wasbeached on a remote islandoff the coast of B.C. last sum-mer and against all odds sur-vived and now is looking fora home?

Are you worried about hearing beluga whalemating calls in the middle of the night when it’sbeluga whale mating season? Or that the belugawill make such a big splash it will drown thedelicate dahlias on your side of the fence?

Don’t worry, the District of Maple Ridge willensure that your neighbours won’t have thatbeluga whale for long.

Because the new animal control bylaw passedby Maple Ridge council last week bans petbeluga whales.

Orcas (killer whales) and dolphins are pro-hibited, as well.

And don’t think about bringing in an elephantor any erinacidae – except for an African pygmyhedgehog.

You also can’t own any chiroptera, that is, batsand flying foxes, which is too bad, because bathouses are all the rage these days.

Other prohibited pets are canidae, edentates,hyaenidae, marsupials, mustelidae, pinnipeds,and procyonidea. (I think I can spell them– don’t ask me to pronounce them.)

And in case your Latin ain’t as good as it wasin high school, these categories include wolves,jackals, foxes (but dogs are allowed!!), anteaters,sloths, and armadillos, hyenas, kangaroos, opos-sums, and wallabies, minks, skunks, otters,badgers, and weasels (but, yes to ferrets), seals,fur seals, and walruses, and raccoons, coati-mundia, and cacomistles.

If you’re more into bugs, make sure you are

not caught with any millipedes,centipedes, stickbugs, or hiss-ing cockroaches in Maple Ridge– although I guess you couldalways argue they just wan-dered in, like the neighbour’scat who hangs out a lot at myhouse.

And in case you were soinclined, don’t buy any “oldworld” arachnids (eight legs,two body parts), bullfrogs, or

scorpions, except of the pandinus species.And for those of you who are thinking of mod-

elling the Christina Lake couple who were feed-ing a dozen or so bears on their property – don’teven go there. Ursidae are definitely prohibited.

And there’s more.Snakes – sure, you can have a pet snake,

as long as it’s shorter than two metres whenfully grown. But no pythons, at least amethyst,Burmese, reticulated (isn’t that a yoga position?),or African pythons. Also green and yellow ana-condas are prohibited. (How about if you breedthem and get a brown one?)

What about a crocodile? Nope. They made theprohibited list along with alligators, caimans,and ghariels. Sorry, Mick Dundee.

If you want a lizard, make sure it won’t belonger than one metre at full maturity. But don’ttry sneaking an African Nile monitor, an Asianwater monitor, a Papuan monitor, an iguanaiguana (common green iguana), or a tatara pastthe Mission-Maple Ridge border.

And if you want a cat, that’s fine, as long asit’s a domestic cat or a Savannah or Serval cat,but all other felidae are most definitely banned.That includes (according to Wikipedia) anytigers, lions, leopards, or jaguars, as well as cou-gars, cheetahs, lynxes, and ocelots.

of the national beef recallwhich has implicated XLFoods, an Alberta-basedmeat processing facility.Such a complex issue isoften accompanied by mis-information, and the factsdeserve to be heard.

What Liberal MP FrankValeriote [Omnibus bill putfood safety at risk, Oct. 11Letters, TIMES] fails to pointout is that, in responseto years of neglect of ourfood safety system by pastLiberal governments, our

Conservative governmenthired more than 700 addi-tional new food inspectorssince 2006 – including170 meat inspectors. Wedid so with no help fromthe opposition, who votedagainst this initiative.

Second, our governmentrecognizes the import-ance of the Canadian FoodInspection Agency (CFIA),and increased its budget by$156 million, a 20-per-centincrease. Once again, theopposition voted against it.

Third, our govern-ment has tabled Bill S-11

– known as the Safe Foodfor Canadians Act – whichstrengthens the authoritiesunder which CFIA acts.The opposition has alreadystated they will not supportthis bill.

Since the beef recallbegan, our government’sstrong record on food safetyhas been misrepresented bythe opposition parties.

For example, the claimthat the recommendationsby an independent reviewof the 2008 listeria outbreakhave yet to be implementedis simply not true. In fact,all 57 recommendations ofthe independent investigatorinto the 2008 outbreak havebeen implemented.

In addition, we haveincreased funding for foodsafety multiple times since2006, including by $52million in our last budgetalone.

Canada has a strong foodsafety regime and our gov-ernment is aiming to makeit even better with the pro-posed Safe Food for CanadaAct.

We ask the oppositionto stop playing politicalgames and get serious aboutfood safety in Canadaby supporting our bill tostrengthen the authoritiesof the CFIA. The health andsafety of Canadians, particu-larly when it comes to foodsafety, is a priority for ourConservative government.

What do we do with a federal government that appears tobe acting in the best interests of a foreign power and theirworkers, rather than our own?

I am, of course, speaking of the Canada-China ForeignInvestment Promotion and Protection Act, which has beensigned and is due to be ratified and put into place for 31years, beginning in early November.

The treaty apparently would give Sinopec, one of the bigChinese backers of the Northern Gateway pipeline, the rightto sue the government of B.C. if it blocks the project.

Sinopec could also demand that only Chinese labour andmaterials be used on the pipeline. Moreover, the treatygives Chinese state-owned companies the right to full pro-tection and security from public opposition.

The agreement also does not require provincial consent. Itcomes without any risk-benefit analysis. And it can be rati-fied into law without parliamentary debate. Nowhere do Isee the benefit of this agreement for Canadians.

I would like to be enlightened, and I would love theopportunity to discuss the pros and cons. I don’t recall thisas part of the federal Conservatives’ election platform, sowould venture to say they do not have a mandate for it.

Dear Editor,I’ve been inundated with all the latest on

the hottest topic of bullies, as of late in TheTIMES, The Sun, The Province…

I recently turned 53 and remember notso fondly when I was 11 years old inEdmonton, and this fellow – I can stillremember his name – picking on me andpicking on me. He threatened to “beat theS*&%” out of me one cold winter’s day.

I didn’t get off the school bus till the nextstop, where I ran into a building and justbroke down crying. Two men heard mydilemma and offered me a ride home. Wedrove right by my bully, who saw me in theback seat. He beat his fist in the air, like Iwould get it the next day.

I told my Dad – an RCMP inspector – thatnight. He came home from work wearinghis uniform, as always, and paid a visit tothe bully’s parents. The bully never spoketo me again.

I also had a large girl push and shove merepeatedly for a time when I was about 12,until I grew and she finally left me alone.

Another fellow also picked on me, till hehit me and pulled a big chunk of my hairout – I finally slammed my lunch kit acrosshis head. He left me alone after that, too.

Weird, isn’t it? All this talk and the recentdeath of a young girl, about what seems tome an age-old issue. I guess it is all aboutsticking together and standing up for othersyou see getting bullied. Maybe talking to thepolice, if you don’t already have a Dad whois one. Reporting it – immediately – beforeit gets to a stage where an entire life is lostbefore it even began.

I have no children, but have worked ata school in the past, and boy, they sure

nipped things like this in the bud, by talkingto the children and by talking to the parentsand by taking notice of what they observedand putting an end to mole hills before theybecame mountains.

What is the answer? Probably it’s in earlylearning: learn to fight back, stand up foroneself, and tell everyone what has hap-pened to you.

My Dad always said 98 per cent of thepeople out there are good, law-abiding cit-izens; it is the other two per cent who makeit miserable for everyone else.

Apples, for instance, havebeen a magical fruit overthe ages – especially linkedwith fertility.

A very potent versionof apple cider (calledThe Witches Brew)may have assisted thisreputation. It wasapparently a trad-itional Halloweendrink.

In Celtic lore,apples were said toattract unicorns, ifyou were to burythe fruit in theground on the lastday of October.

The oldHalloween gameof apple-bobbing(trying to pick anapple out of a tubof water, usingonly your teeth)was used by countryfolk as a method ofdivination. Sometimesit appeared to foretellfuture mates or prosper-ity or happenings in thefuture year.

Apple-bobbing could bemade harder by blindfoldingplayers.

Hazelnuts were thrown into afire on Halloween as another wayof looking ahead. How they burnedindicated much to the watchers:whether a marriage would be happyor a lover faithful.

In those far-off times, the hazeltree was thought to be sacred, andan especially good material forwands. A forked twig of a hazel tree,carried on Halloween, was reputedto prevent drunkenness.

Even today, the forked branches ofthese hazel trees are used by dows-

ers to indicate where to find under-ground water.

Witches were among the entitiesbelieved to be abroad on the nightof Halloween – and some familiargarden plants were among thosebelieved to be of use to them as part

of their Flying Ointment.Flying ointment ingredients include

aconitum (monkshood), belladonna(deadly nightshade), helleborus, fox-glove, and hemp. All are poisonous,and some hallucinogenic.

Combined with other ingredients,flying ointment appeared to be ableto give the illusion to participantsthat they had left the earth.

The practice of carrying lanternson Halloween originated in Ireland,

where large turnips, not pump-kins, were hollowed out and

carried with candles inside toilluminate paths and scare

away any wandering spir-its.

It was the Irish potatofamine in the 1840sthat triggered thewidespread emigra-tion of Irish peopleinto North America,along with theirHalloween trad-itions.

Pumpkins werealready a favour-ite food of thepioneers – soonthe new immi-grants realizedpumpkins werelarger than tur-nips, better look-ing, and mucheasier to carve.

In some trad-itions, lit, carvedpumpkins can be

used as a light towelcome any wan-

dering spirits whomight find their way

back to their lovedones on Halloween.Many plants had a

reputation as protectionagainst evil spirits.Protection was believed to

be essential over Halloween.Hawthorn branches were

thought to give protection if youhung them over the outside of your

house doors – but you’d regret it ifyou brought them inside.

Mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia)also had a great reputation for keep-ing people and their animals safefrom anything malefic, especiallywhen planted close to houses.

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows CommunityServices wants people to share their stor-ies with them.

They are holding a contest askingpeople to tell a story about how they gotinvolved in their community, how theysupported someone else, how they helpedsomeone who was feeling down, or howthey overcame a personal challenge.

“Everyone has a story to tell,” saidCarla Glasgow with community services.

The stories should be one page inlength and typewritten and shouldinclude contact information.

However, she added, the stories can bepublished anonymously.

The top five stories will be published inThe TIMES and the authors will receive acommunity services gift basket.

The deadline for submitting the stor-ies is Oct. 31 and they can be emailed [email protected].

Community services offers a wide var-iety of programs for seniors, includingMeals on Wheels, and for families.

It was a long time in the mak-ing but Rotary Field at SamuelRobertson Technical has a newscoreboard.

“Honestly, it took them sometime to put it up, but once itwas up it was wellworth it because it’s agreat clock,” said CodyLidstone, 15, who playsfor the SRT Titans as atackle.

Mark Ogloff, who is theSRT Titans’ head coachand the president of theMeadow Ridge FootballAssociation said that thescoreboard was erected atthe south end of Rotary Field the

last week of August, about twoyears after the project began.

“A lot of people wantedit put in the north end,but it’s on the south endbecause it doesn’t getwashed out by the sun,it’s closer to power, andthe ground is more firm,”Ogloff explained.

The principal of SRTMike Keenan was atthe official unveiling onThursday night as well,

and spoke highly of the Meadow

Ridge Rotary, who donated$18,000 for the clock.

“Like the field, our school isindebted to the Rotary, first forthe field and now for the scoreclock. We certainly wouldn’t havea football club like this,” Keenansaid.

“We worked hard to get thisclock put in. We had involvementfrom Rotary, the school board,parks board, and the Knights,”said Glen Cote, Peewee GoldKnights coach and MRFA boardmember.

Eighteen local athletes will take partin the provincial championships onNov. 16 in Richmond.

Maple Ridge Secondary swim teambattled their way to a win at the FraserValley Championship on Oct. 25.

The highlight of the meet was a broth-er-sister battle between Nicholas andRebecca Todd.

In their first three races of the day eachcame in second and third places.

In her fourth and final race Rebecca,who is 15 and in Grade 10, won the 50-metre butterfly.

“At that point I could see the determina-tion in Nick’s face” said MRSS coach KierMiner. “He was not going to let his sisterbeat him in the standings.”

Nick, who is 17 and in Grade 12, alsoplaced first in the 50-metre butterfly.

Both Rebecca and Nicholas swim for theHaney Neptunes in the summer and theirschool team in the winter. They have beenswimming since they were in elementaryschool, said Miner.

MRSS had a great showing with 18 ath-letes qualifying for the BC Championshipswhich take place Nov. 16 in Richmond.

The 18 athletes are Bianca Constantin,Zac Osmond, Alex Aguilar, KaelenOsmond, the Todd siblings, MathewHalajian, Emily Halajian, Julia Cooke,Connor Heidama, Thomas Yeo, Yiwen Gu,Julia Rosec, Victoria Good, Julia Cielecka,Daniel Floyd, Kate McIntyre, and AidanElphick-Miner.

The MRSS team also won the seniorboys Fraser Valley Championship for thefourth consecutive time, Miner said.
