After about nine months of construction, shop- pers at Haney Place Mall can now walk through from one end to the other, starting at the new anchor store, Target, and ending at the other relatively new anchor, Thrifty Foods, at the east end. Several merchants at Haney Place Mall were happy the retail store was finally open. Debbie Heron, manager of the Haney Place Mall location of Cartel Jewels, said being next to Target in the mall is “great” for business. “I’m ecstatic it’s open,” Heron said. “We really needed this store... Zellers closed last February to make way for Target, which had bought out the lease. Ashley Rudolph, manager at Bryan’s, a women’s clothing store in the mall, said she hopes that Target will attract other big name stores to the mall. “People like to shop local so I’m happy for people who live locally,” she said about Target opening at Haney Place Mall. Councillors met Tuesday to kick off its 2014 budget planning. by Maria Rantanen [email protected] Maple Ridge council members are getting ready to hammer out the budget for next year, which will determine property taxes for 2014 and where the taxes will be spent. A preliminary working estimate, using the information they currently have, is that taxes will go up roughly 3.25 per cent in Maple Ridge. However, Councillor Michael Morden, who chairs the finance and audit committee, said council will be presented with different options for tax increases and their implications – but not necessarily a zero-per-cent increase option like Pitt Meadows council looked at. Morden pointed out that the num- bers presented at Tuesday’s finance and audit meeting are “preliminary numbers” and any slight variation could have a “significant impact” on other areas . “Discussions on a whole variety of issues and line items will take place during business planning,” he said. “Once these are complete, then we can solidify the final numbers.” On Tuesday afternoon, all of coun- cil took part in the committee meet- ing in anticipation of budget delibera- tions at the beginning of December. Council looked at what areas are driving the budget upwards, how taxes could be lowered and what would be the implication, and what has been done to contain costs and find efficiencies, for example, shared services and service delivery improvements. continued on page A6... Police and fire officials areinvestigating three suspiciousfires in downtown MapleRidge early Wednesday.by Roxanne [email protected]

A family has lost everything, including their home and mostof their worldly possessions, inwhat could be a rash of arsonfires in downtown Maple Ridgethis morning.A screeching smoke detector

is credited with waking a six-member family including twoadults and four teenage children from a sound sleep around5:30 Wednesday morning.Fortunately, everyone was able

to get out safely as flames con-sumed much of the 1930s houseat the corner of 223rd Street and119th Avenue, said recently pro-moted deputy fire chief HowardExner. This was one of four early

morning calls received by MapleRidge firefighters, three beingblazes that officials are describ-ing as suspicious. The house fire on 223rd Street

was the most serious of the blaz-es, Exner explained.Because of the age of the

home, he said it was a difficultfire to control. The fire started on the outside

of the house, but quickly spreadup the back wall into the attic,he said.Fire damage was extensive,

Exner elaborated. While the frontexterior of the house lookedalmost unscathed, windows wereblown out and the inside andback of the house were torchedand charred, including numerous

rooms seriously damaged by fireand heat.Much of what wasnt destroyed

by the fire, has been damagedby smoke and water damage, heconfirmed. The family renting the down-

town home is being cared for byEmergency Social Services in theshort term. Its not believed theyhad content insurance, and itsexpected Exner said theyvelost most of their personal pos-sessions.They were allowed back inside

later that same day to attempt tosalvage some of their personaleffects.Incidents like this drive home

the importance of smoke detec-tors, because these family mem-bers did escape with the mostimportant thing their lives, he

    explained.The smoke alarm defin-

itely worked in this case, Exneradded.Crews were on scene all mor-

ning mopping up and investigat-ing the cause of this blaze aninvestigation being run in con-junction with the Ridge MeadowsRCMP.In the meantime, both fire and

police officers are also investigat-ing a dumpster fire just a shortdistance away in the 22500 blockof Lougheed Highway around thesame time, as well as anotherfire that had the potential to con-sume a house in the 11900 blockof Garden Street. In the case of the Garden Street

fire, a blaze was also startedoutside the house. But, thanksto the fast actions of the resident

and a neighbour, the flames wereextinguished before firefightersarrived.Initially, firefighters were also

called to a three-storey apart-ment at 222nd Street and 119thAvenue early Wednesday mor-ning.Residents evacuated the build-

ing when the fire alarm sounded. While fire crews feared it mightinitially be related to a rash offire calls coming in from thedowntown core about the sametime, fire chief Dane Spence con-firmed later that it was nothingmore than a water leak from theroof that triggered the alarms.Police are not yet saying much

about any of Wednesdays fires.Spence said fire officials are not

willing to link them. They willinvestigate each separately.

Hospital parking is a burden onseniors, according to a protest group.by Maria [email protected]

The Maple Ridge Raging Grannies areangry that visitors and patients to thelocal hospital have to pay for parking andthis Saturday, they will be expressingtheir rage musically.Oosha Ramsoondar said that pay park-

ing is discriminatory against all patientsbut in particular seniors who tend to needthe services of our hospitals more thanany other age group. Many seniors, who are on fixed

incomes, have complained about thesefees which are a financial burden notonly on the patients themselves but onloved ones and friends who visit, sheadded.Parking at Ridge Meadows Hospital is

$3.50 for the first hour and $3 for eachadditional hour. The day rate is $8.25 andevening rates are $5.25.The parking lot is maintained by

Impark, but Fraser Health oversees park-ing services for all the health authoritiesin the Lower Mainland.Maple Ridge resident Lausanne Ham

illness, Ham said.Duanne Van den Berg pointed out that

if someone is coming to the hospital fortests or to visit someone, its hard toknow how long it will take. How can you run out in your hospital

gown to put in more money? she said. Its not right that a private company

makes a profit on sick people, she added. The Raging Grannies will be on the hos-

pital grounds at 10:30 a.m. to sing theirprotest songs.

...continued from page A1Key cost drivers in next years budget

include RCMP, infrastructure mainten-ance, the fire department, the parksmaster plan, drainage improvements, andcontribution to the Districts reserves.Morden pointed out that the policing

costs alone are increasing by seven percent, something that is decided by higherlevels of government.Throughout the budget planning pro-

cess, District staff have to listen to coun-cil at different times, and then present abudget with these thoughts in mind, alsotaking into account long-term planningand regulatory requirements, Mordensaid.

Its a huge amalgamation of lots ofballs in the air and quite a challenge tohave it land right, he added. Its dif-ficult to please everyone all the time, hence why we go through this wholeprocess.Morden said that the District is aiming

to present a budget that is easy to readand understand.Looking at a $110 million budget can

be overwhelming but he said the wayit will be presented this year with thingslike pie charts should make it easier tounderstand.Business planning takes place on Dec.

Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Times Thursday, November 14, 2013 A15

Since 2009, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, andMission three of B.C.s fastest growing com-munities have been working together on a num-ber of initiatives to grow the regions economy. This work is carried out under the Invest North

Fraser brand. This regional approach to economic development

increases opportunities, offers new perspectives, andleverages resources.Together, we all win.In 2011, Invest North Fraser was fortunate to be

selected as a pilot project by the Government of B.C.sMinistry of Jobs, Tourism & Skills Trainings BC JobsPlan.Through an economic forum in December 2011, 67

opportunities were identified by close to 100 delegates. This list was then whittled down to nine workable pro-

jects for the North Fraserregion. The projects were chosen

based on their potential todrive future investment andjob creation. For Pitt Meadows, our

office has been working onan agrifood hub project andthe Pitt Meadows airportinternational education andbusiness park project.Through funding from the

province and Pitt MeadowsEconomic DevelopmentCorporation, a report wasundertaken to better under-stand the required compon-

ents of an agrifood hub in the North Fraser region. An agrifood hub provides services and resources in

one location to help producers sell their products locally.Hubs may include distribution and aggregation sup-

port, storage, processing, or an indoor farmers market.By looking at the supply and demand that could even-

tually support a food hub, and researching the modelsused by other agrifood hubs in North America, thereport provides good information and insight for movingforward with this initiative. The draft report concludes that through

the development of a hub, there is signifi-cant potential to increase activity in theregional food economy.Following the lead of Pitt Meadows,

Maple Ridge and Mission are working onimplementing the True North Fraser sign-age program to increase the awarenessof the regions high-quality agriculturalproducts. To support the signage program, a True

North Fraser website has been launched www.true-northfraser.com and the Invest North Fraser partnersare working with their agriculture and tourism partnersto populate the site.In respect to the international education and busi-

ness park at Pitt Meadows Regional Airport (YPK), theprovince co-funded the development of communications

and marketing materials in support of the participationof Invest North Fraser and YPK at the Pacific NorthwestAerospace Alliance Conference. Now equipped with materials to support discussions

with potential business investors, including a finalizedbusiness attraction target list and a tenant attraction

strategy, the airport is well positioned forgrowth.YPK representatives also attended the

BC Aerospace Conference in Abbotsfordthis summer to explore business andinvestment opportunities for the region. The North Fraser/BC Jobs Plan pilot

has produced significant results relatedto the identified priority projects andan enhanced understanding of regionalissues and provincial supports.

To learn more about the work that is underway, con-nect with me, economic development coordinator LoriGraham, by email [email protected] or604-460-6747 or visit the Invest North Fraser display atthe chamber of commerces upcoming business sum-mit and trade show being held at Meadow Gardens onThursday, Nov. 28.

Its that time of year again, when packing items in ashoebox will lift a childsspirits overseas.

    by Troy [email protected]

There is a lot of love stowedinto little shoeboxes earmarkedfor needy children abroad.Once again in November,

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadowsindividuals, families, businesses, schools, and churches are pack-ing shoeboxes with toys, schoolsupplies, and hygiene items forimpoverished children aroundthe world.Through Operation Christmas

Child (OCC), these gifts will betransported to suffering childrenin Argentina,Costa Rica,El Salvador,Guatemala,Nicaragua,Paraguay,Uruguay,Venezuela,EquatorialGuinea, Guinea,Guinea Bissau,Ivory Coast,Senegal, SierraLeone, andHaiti. The shoeboxes will be deliv-

ered using whatever meansnecessary: trains, airplanes, boats, elephants, bikes, andeven dog sleds, all to get theminto the hands of the children.Drop off dates locally are

Monday, Nov. 18 throughSunday, Nov. 24 at Maple RidgeBaptist Church (222nd Street andLougheed Hwy) from 10 a.m. to4 p.m.Anyone can participate in

    OCC.Barb Gustafson, Ridge

Meadows OCC coordinator forthe past 13 years, said taking

the time and effort to pack ashoebox can definitely brightena childs life.Words cant describe it, said

Gustafson, who before takingon the coordinator role volun-teered by packing shoeboxes forchildren. It makes such a differ-ence in a childs life. They knowsomeone cares and loves them, even though they dont knowwho that person is.Gustafson noted that many of

these children only get one giftin their lifetime, which makesthe shoeboxes that much morespecial. We have so much here, she

said. Were so blessed and theyhave really nothing. They arethe future generation for theircountries. While OCC is headquartered

at the Maple Ridge BaptistChurch, the charity effort is a

    communitything, Gustafsonstressed.And the more

    helping hands,the better.If people want

to help, we couldsure use theirhelp, she added. From Dec. 2 to

4, Gustafson anda team of abouta dozen local

residents are going to Calgary tohelp out at the OCC warehouse. There, theyll inspect each

box to ensure they are safe forthe children to receive. Onceinspected, the shoeboxes areplaced into cartons and shippedto the countries involved withOCC.Once we pack them into

cartons, that will be the lasttime anyone will see each boxuntil its in a childs hands,Gustafson said.Local donations can have a

profound effect on its recipients. For example, the West Coast

    Ford Football Club donated soc-

cer gear last year, and this pastMay one of the clubs uniformswas hand deliv-ered by localresident MeghanTrafananko toa young boy inNicaragua. My trip to

Nicaragua wasamazing, includ-ing the smiles oneach childs face, the kids thatgraduated from The GreatestJourney program, and theunexplained miracles that hap-pened when we were about to

run out of boxes, Trafanankorecalled. We were able to

    give OperationChristmas Childgift-filled shoe-boxes to over2,000 childrenand show themlove in a tangibleway.Gustafson

has made threetrips overseas to deliver shoe-boxes, including two journeys toNicaragua and one to Bolivia.

You dont ever forget that, said Gustafson, whose last trip

    was in 2006.This is life-changing. Its a

reality check to see how peopleactually do live in this world. The impact we have in thesekids lives, to show our love andconcern, when you see it first-hand it makes an impact. Its avery emotional experience, aswell. To get to pack your ownbox and hand deliver it is a veryemotional, awesome experi-ence.Filling a shoebox requires

three simple steps: select a shoebox Use a

regular-sized shoebox or shoe-box-sized plastic box. If wrap-ping your shoebox, wrap the lidseparately; determine whether your

gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the childs age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14; fill your shoebox with

school supplies such as pencils, pens, pencil crayons, note pads, and picture books; toys andother gifts such as stuffed ani-mals, small musical instruments, hair clips, toy jewelry, T-shirts,socks, and candy (loose, individ-ually wrapped hard candy in asealable bag); soap in a sealablebag; and a personal note and/or a photo (not inside the dona-tion envelope). For those donating shoeboxes

full of items, Gustafson stressedthat nothing with an expiry dateshould be included, due to cus-toms restrictions. Hard candy, for example, has to be takenout of its original package andplaced in a Ziploc bag.Since 1993, more than 100 mil-

lion boys and girls worldwidehave received shoeboxes. However, theres still lots of

room to give kids some hope,Gustafson said. For more information on

how to participate in OperationChristmas Child, people cancall Gustafson at 604-467-9794or visit www.SamaritansPurse.ca/occ.

    International goodwill

Good things do indeed come in small packages

A boy in Nicaragua was excited this past May after receiving a soccer uniform from MapleRidge, through the Operation Christmas Child program.

It makes such adifference in a childslife. They knowsomeone cares andloves them, eventhough they dont knowwho that person is.Barb Gustafson

A group of festive fabric birds, made from recycled silk kimonos by Keiko Kiyota, will be part of the ensemble.

An annual art show features severalpieces by various artists.Maple Ridge Art Gallery will showcase

groups of art pieces at its fourth annualEnsemble exhibit, opening on Saturday. This annual his exhibition is known by

local art aficionados for it distinctly looseand eclectic flavour.Although there are strict size restric-

tions, the submission process is open toartists working in all media, in either twoor three dimensions. The one constant feature underpinning

the display is that each artist is able toshow his or her work in an ensembleformat, so that the visual statementcarried by the artwork is significantlyenhanced.Fabric artist Keiko Kiyota has an ensem-

If last weekends tournament is any indica-tion, time hasnt diminished the basketballskills of Pitt Meadows Secondarys alumni. The schools annual

grad basketball tourna-ment was a big successjust as it has been inprevious years, accord-ing to Shane Kool, oneof the events organiz-ers who also played forthe winning 2004 andolder squad. The player turnout

was as large as weexpected and we allhad a great time seeingeach other again and playing in the games,Kool said. No injuries were reported whichis always the most important thing in the gradtournament. The 2004 and older graduates and 2008-2010

graduates each went 2-0 in the round robinstage and then met in a rematch of the 2012

final, which was won bythe 2004 and oldergroup. The 2004 and

older squad waswithout their bestplayer BrysonKool for the two

Saturday games due to illness, so theteam leaned heavily on tournamentMVP Aaron Christensen in the afternoonwin over the 2011-2013 grads, and thenagain in the finals. The championship game was tied at 50

points apiece in the third quarter, when,

according to Shane Kool, 2008-2010 inexplic-ably assigned 57 Wadah Nour to guard65 post players.Kool believes that this move helped to

jumpstart the 2004 and older group toa big run and an eventual 82-64 victoryfor their second consecutive tournamentchampionship. This years members of the cham-

pionship 2004 and older team includedAaron Christensen, Kevin Wallsmith,Mike Vanderwal, Shane Kool, MarkArdron, Sam Te Henneppe, Bryson Kool,

Scott Kollen, Nathan Larden, and head coachMike Alain.

Hamideh Abol doesnt go to fabricfairs or showrooms to buy fabric forher fashion collections; she visitsfarms, buys raw wool and felts itherself in her Vancouver studio.

The result? Beautiful Simork woolshawls that work with winter coats, cosy sweaters, or over pretty cocktaildresses. They are very warm, unique, and definitely our new favouritealternative to fur. Shes also a bit ofan artist when it comes to pattern, and her beautiful printed scarves area great accent to a dark coloured fallwardrobe.
