Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read provided an update on the Citys homelessness task force Tuesday at City hall.COLE [email protected]

Tension between residents of Cliff Avenue and the local street population, who have set up camp along the street reached a boiling point Tuesday, but the City has yet to decide on a plan to deal with the still-expanding camp.

Prior to an 8 p.m. meeting at City hall where mayor Nicole Read was to give an update on the work of her homeless-ness solutions task force a crowd of Cliff Avenue residents were involved in a heated confrontation with a few of the representatives from the temporary camp.

Residents are fed up with the tempor-ary camp, which has expanded from around 30 people, to over 60 as of this week according to some estimates.

But there are no easy solutions, said Read in her presentation to council.

And while the council and the mayor expressed their sympathy during the meeting to Cliff Avenue residents, the mayor remained committed to the stance that simply moving a camp from place to place would only be a temporary solu-tion.

Its very important to provide a lasting and meaningful solution, instead of hav-ing bylaw moving people in the morning only to return at night, said Read.

But while many residents of Cliff Avenue were in attendance last night seeking a solution to the issue at hand, Reads presentation was focused more on the long term plans for the task force.

Council recently approved a $325,000 budget for the task forces first phase of work, which earmarked funds for a num-ber of outreach workers specializing in mental health and addiction ser-vices.

Those roles will be filled by staff at Alouette Addictions, and the Canadian Mental Health Services, Read said in the presentation.

With the funding approved, and the hiring process outlined, Read said she expected the workers to begin can-vassing the community within a couple weeks.

But she later emphasized that the Cliff Avenue problem would not be waiting on outreach workers, and that council was

working on an interim solution to the issue.

Everything is on the table right now, nothing is off the table, said Read.

The outreach work-ers will identify gaps in the continuum of care for the local street population, while other aspects of the task force will work on community safety, and educa-

tion for young people about addiction, explained Read.

Meanwhile, Councillor Bob Masse had a recent meeting with Mike Murray, execu-tive assistant to Randy Kamp, regarding issues in transition housing being avail-able in Maple Ridge.

Coun. Gordy Robson, who works along-side Masse on the task force, sympathized with the residents of Cliff Avenue, and assured those in attendance that the work of the task force was designed to have an immediate effect on the problem.

Were gonna have this on the ground in a week, or two weeks, and if we dont feel the difference in a few days or weeks, its something were going to change, said Robson.

Read echoed Robsons comments, stat-ing that if change wasnt felt within the first week, the task force wouldnt be afraid to pivot and change direction.

Those involved in Fridays protest in Whonnock oppose extensive agricultural land use near their homes.

A high noon protest is on the books for this Friday in Whonnock.

An organized rally has been planned for May 22 at noon, against the licensing of an industrial scale medical marijuana facility proposed for 9860 272nd Street.

The facility is a 97,000 square foot greenhouse, plus a 16,000 square foot production/storage building, accord-ing to organizers of the rally.

According to the website, WhonnockGrowOp.com, the residents are not against medical marijuana, but are against intensive agricultural land use next to our homes, in an area where our water is a constant con-cern.

Also stated on the website: The quiet rural area of West Whonnock is about

to be destroyed by an industrial land use approved by

the Federal Government and The Agricultural Land Commission of BC, without any warning to residents. The blatant dishonesty of the developer has kept locals in the dark for over six months, despite repeated attempts to obtain information regarding what is being built.

The residents say they are concerned about their wells running dry and the safety of their community, in addi-tion to environmental impact and decreasing property values.

Preet Bhatti spent a week in Lima, Peru, helping impoverished children and adults.TROY [email protected]

A trip to the dentist isnt something most people look forward to, but in a first world country such as Canada, its a somewhat necessary evil for their dental and overall health.

In a developing country like Peru, a dentist visit can be life altering when it comes to patients well being and, espe-cially, comfort moving forward.

This is where a Pitt Meadows dentist and his colleagues from around the world come into play.

On April 20, Preet Bhatti from Pitt Meadows Dental returned from a mission trip to Perus capital of Lima, where he per-formed much-needed dental work on residents who other-wise wouldnt have been able to afford such care.

While this was the third such mission trip through Kindness In Action (www.kindnessinaction.ca) for the 39-year-old Bhatti, born and raised in Maple Ridge, it was his first to Peru. He did similar dentistry work with the

organization in Guatemala in 2009 and Costa Rica in 2012.

They organize about a dozen trips every year, Bhatti said. Its a dentistry-focused organ-ization. Usually, therell be some dentists, some dental assistants, some dental hygienists and theyll have non-dental volun-teers, as well.

All three trips were positive experiences for Bhatti.

Youre helping others with a spe-cialized skill set that not everyone else has, Bhatti said.

Bhatti said he made a donation to Kindness In Action and the charity in turn arranged for his flight and accom-modations.

In Peru, Bhatti noted that he did a lot of extrac-tions along with some basic dentistry work for a week in April.

Id say more extractions than fillings, Bhatti added.

The Kindness In Action team was headquartered in a youth centre in Lima, which on top of being the capital is also the largest city in Peru.

The volunteers stayed about an hour away from the centre, where, Bhatti said, the poor-

est of the poor children would come after school for tutoring and food.

Its really for people who cant afford it all, Bhatti said, about those he treated. Its in a rough part of the city, as well.

Bhatti found that out when he stepped outside the centre to take photos. A security guard manning the front door strongly suggested Bhatti go back inside

    for his own safety.

Many of the extractions Bhatti did were on children, a few of whom needed 80 per cent of their teeth pulled because they were beyond repair.

It seemed as though there was a high consumption of pop, and little dental knowledge, Bhatti said.

Luckily for most of the children, it was their baby

teeth being extracted, but Bhatti pointed out, We were extracting adult teeth on kids, as well.

Its hard seeing these kids in this shape, Bhatti said. Here [in Canada] were trying to take a proactive approach; were try-ing to educate parents early.

Bhatti communicated to patients through volunteer trans-lators, making things easier for

him, but it was still difficult trying to speak with children as freely as hed like to, to put them more at ease.

In one case, a young girl with severe cerebral palsy and confined to a wheelchair had to be carried up three flights of stairs to see Bhatti.

After he had frozen her and completed the extractions in one corner of her mouth, Bhatti stopped and asked if he should continue with the remaining extractions.

Her mouth was in bad shape with multiple abscessed teeth, Bhatti said. We had no other choice but to restrain her while we worked as she had no under-standing of what we were doing. This was emotionally difficult

as we strive to make every child as comfortable as possible back home, but here we had to put comfort secondary to the greater good of the patient.

Bhatti was one of the more experienced dentists on site, so he and another dentist did screenings, determining the best way to help each patient.

Reflecting on the trip, it was a satisfying experience for both Bhatti and his patients.

You can tell people are always very appreciative of the work that youve done for them, Bhatti said. They want to give you a hug or they want to shake your hand in apprecia-tion, especially the adults. You feel good about the work that you are doing for these people.

    No glamour in gangs

Its not been a good year for gang activity. At least two gangs, each apparently chock full of armed, reck-less young men, have been taking pot shots at one anothers mem-bers for weeks. Over a 10-week period, there were 27 shootings in Surrey and nearby North Delta. It will be welcome news to locals that another 100 RCMP officers have

been approved by the federal government. More police means faster response times, more investigators, and hopefully quicker arrests of the most dangerous bad guys.

But more important in the long term will be the $3.4 million announced by the federal government to educate kids away from joining gangs. Up to 400 children, aged 11 to 19 who are considered vulnerable to joining gangs, will be the targets of the program.

Perhaps the new initiative could be expanded to other areas around the Lower Mainland, the province, and the country as a whole.

The truth is probably one of the best ways of reaching kids. The aver-age drug dealer, for example, can make less than minimum wage. Studies in the 1990s showed that drug dealers and gang members just dont make that much cash, with most gang members living at home with their par-ents.

Then theres the danger aspect. Its not just the chance of dying that can have a mystique for many aggressive young men. Its the chance of getting a bullet that severs your spine, lodges in your skull and leaves you with brain damage, or just slices through internal organs, leaving the vic-tim with chronic pain and years of operations.

If youre very lucky, you might add a prison term to that list of fun gang facts.

Gang life in the movies looks grim and gritty, but glamourous. Gang life in the real world often ends in a hospital bed, a prison cell, a grave or maybe worst of all, still living at home, with no skills, a criminal record, and wishing like crazy youd applied to work at that fast food place rather than becoming a gangster.

The mall is dying. Sure, it looks healthy enough, especially around the holidays, but make no mistake, its days are numbered.

The mall is a new thing. You can find various kinds of proto-malls indoor shopping with multiple merchants going back to the Elizabethan era. But the idea of retail sales as a separate category is only a little older than that. From medieval fairs to permanent shops to the department store to the modern mall has been a journey of just a few hundred years.

The history of shopping has been essen-tially a history of disruption through the last hundred years.

Weve gone from general stores and almost medieval single-item shops to department stores, and from there to big box stores and discount retailers. The undisputed juggernaut of these is

Walmart, which is both department store and dis-count retailer, which can stand alone or slot into a mall itself.

The genius of the mall was to take all kinds of retailers the old depart-ment stores, the modern big box, the discount stores, plus specialty stores, and to glue everything together with a food court and a couple of quarter-operated rides for the toddlers. Warm in cold climates, cool in hot

climates, and never rained out. As long as there was enough parking and a sur-rounding support system of suburbanites with cars, a mall couldnt lose.

Weve seen a number of big and medium-sized retailers pull out of the Canadian market in recent years. For some, Im sure its the recent recession. For others, its consolidation. For Target, it appears to have been hubris.

Hovering over all of these closed stores, like a dark cloud, is Amazon. What Walmart is to brick and mortar, Amazon is to online shopping. And then some. Their strategy is not unlike that of the Borg, from Star Trek. They will assimilate your retail experience.

The mall sells clothes? So will Amazon. Pet food? Sure. DVDs? Electronics? Furniture? Fresh groceries? Yes, increas-ingly.

Does it cost more to get some of these things from Amazon? Well, yeah. But there are costs to everything. When you go to a mall, the cost is spending time at the mall.

Im not a shopper by nature. The only stores I ever liked going to were book-stores. Now there are bookstores online. I can go there at midnight. I can browse titles in my pyjamas, from my couch. No screaming toddlers. No long lines. No finding a parking spot.

Fine for books, right, but what about clothing? Surely thats immune to e-com-merce. Well, there are online retailers

working on that, too. High end outlets will ship you all kinds of clothes, and their websites have tutorials on how to get your measurements exact. On the low end, if you buy tube socks in plastic bags at the store, what difference does ordering online make? The high and low end retailers are steadily eating their way towards the middle.

Eventually, this is going to kill off some individual retailers, whether big box or specialty or discount. And there will be nothing in the physical world to replace the stores, because those shoppers are gone. Thats when the malls are going to be in real trouble. Some people love to shop. The mall, for

them, is a social place. here are bargain hunters who love checking for discounts. But just as

Walmart killed off plenty of department stores, Amazon is gunning for the

shopping mall. And the online sellers have lots of ammo.

    LettersDear Editor,

Health Canada has publicly stated that they will exercise the highest level of due dili-gence on all applications to produce Medical Marijuana.

As a homeowner in the Whonnock area, I would like to take this opportunity to respond to this statement.

To date, there has been a great deal of oppos-ition to the proposed industrial-scale medical marijuana greenhouse (approximately 97,000 square foot) at 272nd Street and Bell Avenue but I have recently learned that there was also a second application proposed for Whonnock.

The company, My Marijuana Canada Inc., submitted an application to Health Canada for a medical marijuana greenhouse for property located at 26521 Lougheed Hwy.

This site is just a few kilometres west of Tantalus Labs proposed operation. From the documents I reviewed, they had received approval from the city to build a 14,000 square foot production facility and their future plans included the construction of a 120,000 square foot greenhouse.

This proposed greenhouse is larger than Tantalus Labs and completely dependent (again) on well water for irrigation. The company also stated that they were in stage four of the appli-cation review process with Health Canada.

We can not look at these industrial-scale greenhouse applications in isolation. We have to manage our groundwater resources wisely. There is a cumulative effect here. There are approximately 450 plus homeowners and live-stock farmers who depend on this low produc-tivity, highly vulnerable aquifer.

The water shortages we experience are well known and have plagued the communities of Thornhill and Whonnock for years. There are many residents who must haul water or have it delivered during extended dry periods.

Even those who have deep drilled wells can experience problems with their water levels.

Does Health Canada not hire staff who have

expertise in planning, engineering and hydrol-ogy to review these applications?

Marijuana production requires a great deal more water than other crops.

Health Canada needs to develop some guide-lines and regulations for these massive green-house facilities.

They also need to take steps to ensure that there is sufficient infrastructure in place to support these operations. Imagine a developer submitting an application to build homes with-out sufficient water to service them and stating: Dont worry I will have water delivered.

If you do the calculations you will realize that it is impossible, as well absurd, to have these massive facilities truck in water in an attempt to deal with their huge shortfall.

In addition to tapping into the aquifer, indus-trial-scale greenhouses will be capturing and diverting all surface water to large cisterns. This reduces the amount of groundwater recharge.

Closed system greenhouses are also permitted 75 per cent lot coverage and this dramatically increases areas of impervious surface. Another fact that seems to be overlooked by staff when processing these applications.

Thankfully, My Marijuana Canada Inc. have been unsuccessful in obtaining sufficient finan-cial backing and appear to have aborted their plans. The point is there will be others.

Please ask the tough questions, the right ques-tions and thoroughly review these applications. If staff are overwhelmed and lack expertise hire more. This is a future billion dollar industry. These medical marijuana companies can afford to purchase land in areas that have sufficient infrastructure to support them. We can afford to have competent and knowledgeable staff over-see these applications.

To the greater community at large, please support your neighbours to the east and join us at our High Noon Protest at 272nd and Bell Avenue at noon this Friday, May 22. This is an issue that will eventually affect all of us.

    Dear Editor,This letter is in

follow up to our ear-lier letters concerning Westview Park.

We presented a peti-tion that was heard by Maple Ridge Council on May 14, with an overwhelming major-ity of residents who live in the Westview area, who signed the petition, saying that they do not want a dog park there.

Geoff Mallory, man-ager of parks and open space, presented area residents feed back from an open house that he held on April 28, 2014.

The feedback from the majority of resi-dents from that was that they do not want a dog park there.

So what happened at the Council meeting?

    Council did what

they wanted anyway, albeit another six month trial period for the park to see if the park would stay.

Turning a beautiful park into a cesspool

of dog waste that will ultimately cost the tax payers hard earned dollars to clean up.

So what is the point of having your voice heard?

I guess council will have to wait and see what my voice has to say at the next elec-tion.

A new piece of art is now on display at a local high school.

    TROY [email protected]

A piece of First Nations art that was four-and-a-half years in the making was unveiled May 14 at Thomas Haney Secondary School.

The pole was acquired four-and-a-half years ago, one of many from the 2006 wind

storm that wreaked havoc in Stanley Park.

For five months it was dried, and then in November 2010 the pole was blessed and the carving began.

All creative ideas for the pole came from Thomas Haney Secondary students and were turned into a design by artist and cultural advisor Quentin Harris.

Master carver Huuyaah from Squamish First Nation, along with his son, Simon Baker, took over to guide the carving of the pole to completion.

    Special guests at the unveil-

ing ceremony and pole blessing included Colleen Pierre from Katzie First Nation; Huuyah; Joanne Foot from the Fraser River All Nations Aboriginal Society; Metis jigger and pow wow dancer Madelaine McCallum; actor/speaker Nathaniel Arcand, who is an honourary elder with Pikani First Nation; Colleen Hannah, the Ministry of Educations enhancement agreement coordinator; School District 42 Aboriginal Education principal Ron Lanzarotta; school trustee Dave Rempel; and district Aboriginal Education staff.

For most 17-year-olds around Maple Ridge, mid-May usual-ly signals the impend-ing end of school, and the countdown towards walking across the stage at a graduation ceremony.

But Erik Bruendl is not your average 17-year-old in fact, school is the last thing on Bruendls mind this week, as he prepares for a week of performances with Coastal City Ballet, a professional com-pany debuting their spring production of Cinderella.

Normally, I go to school in the mor-ning, at noon I leave, and I train 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on average, said Bruendl.

This week though, Ive only been to school one day.

    Bruendl, who start-

ed his ballet career with the Warren Performing Arts school of dance in Pitt Meadows, now dan-ces with the Pacific Dance Arts academy in Vancouver.

Through Pacific Dance Arts, Bruendl was offered the opportunity to dance with the professional company, Coastal City Ballet, as they prepared a brand new production this spring: Cinderella.

Its a new produc-tion from scratch even professional dancers dont get a chance to be a part of a full length, brand new classical produc-tion, said Bruendl, meaning he will be the first to dance his role on stage ever.

A new production, with all new choreog-raphy, is somewhat of a rarity in the ballet scene, especially in B.C., explained the dancer.

Im the youngest male dancer in the production, but its been good. Its been nice to have some-thing so big and com-plex to be a part of, said Bruendl.

Cinderella debuted on May 15 in North Vancouver at the Centennial Theatre.

Another perform-ance takes place on May 30 in Surrey, at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88th Ave.

The show starts at 4 p.m., and tickets are available by calling 604-501-5566.
