Kimber MacWilliams has never let a littlething like a hole in her heart slow her down.

The 42-year-old Maple Ridge resident, whohas lost count of the number of surgeriesshe’s had to replace numerous pacemakers,has defied the odds.

MacWilliams was born with ahole in her heart.

She spent the first half year ofher life in the hospital, and atsix months, she had a temporary“banding” surgery.

“It’s basically, in normal terms,taking a bandage, and puttingit over top a hole in the heart,”MacWilliams explained.

Doctors had to wait until MacWilliamshad reached a weight in which it was safe tohave the procedure done.

In some cases, a heart will repair itself overtime.

“Many people have holes in their heartswhen they’re born, and it’s just minor. It fillsin and it’s good to go,” MacWilliams said,

MacWilliams was not as fortunate.At six years old MacWilliams had open

heart surgery to fix the hole. It had notclosed and her heart was having many dif-ficulties.

Doctors were frank when speaking toMacWilliams’ parents about her future. Theywere told that even with the surgery, therewas no guarantee that she would live past13.

MacWilliams said that her own built-in,

natural pacemaker was torn, adding evengreater risk to her health. Doctors had toattach an external pacemaker to her heart,because it wasn’t able to run on its own.

She spent two-and-a-half months in thehospital before doctors implanted a pace-maker into her groin area because she wastoo small to have it put in her chest

Once out of the hospital, MacWilliams,with her parents’ encouragement, lived asnormal a life as she could.

“At six-and-a-half years old, when youhave something implanted in you, you justwork around it and go with it, and do the

very best you can,” she said.At the time, a pacemaker could

only beat at one set rate, so regard-less if she ran, jumped, or satstill, her heart-rate maintained at60 beats per minute. This causedMacWilliams to have trouble keep-ing up with other kids.

MacWilliams’ next surgery hap-pened when she was 13.

This time a pacemaker was implanted inher chest, and it had variable rates. It wentanywhere from 60 beats per minute to 120.

“That was like night and day for me,” sherecalled. “It was like, yay! Let’s go!”

Since that time she has relied on a pace-maker for her heart to beat, and has hadcountless surgeries to replace and upgradethe pacemaker as research has led to newand improved pacemakers.

Pacemakers have a shelf life because theyrun on batteries, MacWilliams explained.

“The ones that have more gadgets, they’renot going to last as long,” she said. “Themajority of people who have pacemakersare senior citizens. They’re not out kicking aball, running around, going to the gym... thatsort of stuff. So it’s quite fine for them. Theirbattery will last 10, 12, 20 years.”

“Everything” is on the table as Maple Ridge-PittMeadows school trustees face a possible $6 million defi-cit for next year, according to trustee Ken Clarkson.

The former board chair put forward a motion at lastweek’s board meeting to urge boards of education acrossthe province to take “collective action” to protest theunderfunding of education, as many boards across theprovince face deficits.

Clarkson pointed out that 90 per cent of the budgetgoes to wages, so there isn’t much room in cutting thebudget.

“The last time we faced this, it was a $2 million defi-cit, and we closed two schools,” Clarkson said.

He said the board is facing a deficit because of moredownloaded costs, for example, higher medical pre-miums and benefits.

“We can’t maintain the quality of education withoutmore funding,” Clarkson said.

A few years ago, when facing a budget shortfall, thesummer reading program, Reding Racers, was cut.

“That was a program that no one – nobody – wantedto see cut, but we had no choice,” Clarkson said.

Brains and brawn will be com-bined to create a garden for chil-dren and seniors.

An intergenerational gardenis being built on a municipallyowned lot at the corner of EdgeStreet and 121st Avenue, and tostart the project, on Friday threeloads of gravel were dumped onit.

The garden was envisioned bythe Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Seniors Network, andwith a $25,000 grant from thefederal government’s NewHorizons for Seniors program,the lot will be transformed into agarden with 19 raised beds.

Senior volunteers and chil-dren from the two neighbouringschools, Eric Langton Elementaryand St. Patrick’s School, willgarden together, with the seniors

providing the knowledge and thechildren helping with the heavylifting.

“It’s the perfect [match]between brains and brawn,”said Christian Cowley, executivedirector with the CEED Centre,which is involved in the newgarden project.

The inter-generational gar-den project wasinitiated by theseniors networkin collaborationwith Maple Ridge-Pitt MeadowsParks and LeisureServices.

The schooldistrict is also involved in theproject, and the steering commit-tee for the garden also includesrepresentatives from the CEEDCentre and Golden Ears FEAST(Food Education Action StrategyTable).

There are 10 other school gar-dens within the school district,however, this is the only onethat is not on school propertyand the only one that has a for-

mal intergenerational componentand a gardening coordinator, SueFleming, said Heather Treleaven,coordinator of the seniors plan-ning table.

“The goal of the intergenera-tional garden is to bring seniorsand students as garden friends,”Treleaven said. “Seniors will

share theirknowledge andexperience withthe youngergenerationsand we hope togrow more thanjust vegetablesand flowers.”

The mainfocus will be on

growing vegetables for consump-tion by the students and volun-teers, Treleaven said.

There could be some earlycrops like lettuce before theend of school, but in the fall,Fleming hopes that the gardenwill produce food for stir friesand soups.

“Our dream plan is to adda culinary component to theproject encouraging students to

cook what they have grown,”Treleaven said. “We will beworking with Golden EarsFEAST to try and make that areality.”

Currently, there are a dozenseniors who volunteer at EricLangton Elementary as “GrandBuddies,” and they could be partof the project.

The intergenerational gardenwill have a few allotment bedsthat will be rented out to com-munity members, but the detailsare still being worked out.

The garden was approved byMaple Ridge council and thejoint parks and leisure commis-sion earlier this year.

The seniors network is one of10 seniors planning tables in theLower Mainland funded by theUnited Way.

The group’s goal is to “bringthe community together towardthe common goal of improvingthe health and well-being of ourseniors,” Treleaven said.

The school district maintains lowerthan average class sizes, and if those areraised to save money, it will mean layingoff teachers.

But to cut the budget, “we’re looking ateverything,” Clarkson said.

Clarkson pointed out that while theschool district hasbeen waiting forseveral years for theMinistry of Educationto provide the capitalfunding to build anew school in Albion– the current one isover capacity andhomes are continu-ously being built inthe area – with thecurrent deficit, itwould put a strain onthe budget to operate it.

“We would not have any more moneyto run that school,” Clarkson said.

The teachers at Maple Ridge Elementarysaid the survey asks parents and employ-ee groups to “further weaken our increas-ingly broken-down system.”

“We feel that this survey creates div-isiveness between employee groups,parents and student groups who rely ona cooperative environment for the educa-

tional system to be effective,” the letterstates.

The teachers ask the board to recon-sider making more cuts and “instead takea stronger stand and demand adequatefunding from the Ministry of Education.”

In response to the criticism, however,Clarkson said that he’d rather be criti-cized for consulting too much.

“[The survey] wasn’t the ideal instru-ment but it forces you to prioritize,” hesaid, adding that there have been 1,200

responses.In the past,

when open houseshave been held togather feedback onthe budget, veryfew people havecome to them.

This is the firsttime a survey hasbeen done likethis online forthe budget, andClarkson said the

technology is not yet fully developed.Senior school district staff will bring

back recommendations to the boardof education in the spring on how thebudget can be cut to address the fundingshortfall.

Another motion approved by the boardlast week, also put forward by Clarkson,was to endorse a campaign by the B.C.School Trustees Association to make edu-cation an election issue in the upcomingMay provincial election.

“Last election education wasn’t even anissue,” Clarkson said. “Hopefully it willbe this time.”

Locally, the board of education wouldlike to see an all-candidates meetingabout education.

Children were entertained by Dilly the Clown, whiletheir parents enjoyed listening to the band GreasyLizardz and watched the Sionnaine Irish Dance Academyperform at the second annual Sham-rock Shake onSaturday.

The crowd of festival goers wore green to celebrate St.Patrick’s Day in the Meadowvale Shopping Centre park-ing lot.

The event was organized by the Pitt MeadowsCommunity Association.

There were games, prizes, a hotdog barbecue, bal-loons, face painting, a colouring contest, crafts, andmuch more.

April 21 will be an exciting day forDarin McClain and anyone involvedwith the Bell-Irving Hatchery atKanaka Creek Regional Park.

McClain, the hatchery manager,has the third Sunday in April circledon his calendar for two reasons:Bell-Irving hosts the Goodbye Chumsfry release event and at the sametime welcomes the public to the 30-year-old hatchery’s grand re-open-ing, following a complete rebuildthat started in September.

“We hope to have everything com-pleted,” McLain said.

There are some tanks being fabri-cated that might not be in place intime for the re-opening.

“That’s not going to impact thehatchery at all this spring,” McClainsaid. “That’s just a minor detail.Most importantly, the building’sgoing to be open.”

“The scope of this project is veryfar reaching,” McClain added. “Whatwe’ve found in the last few years,especially with the opening of thenew [Golden Ears] bridge, is thatwe’ve had people from all over theregion coming in to visit us. That’swhat makes the stewardship centreso important.”

The old building was far past itsexpiration date and needed to bedemolished to make way for a newstructure.

“It wasdilapidatedand started tohave mouldproblemsand differentthings andhad to betorn down,”McClain said.

The rebuiltBell-IrvingHatchery,in conjunc-tion with the future Kanaka CreekWatershed Stewardship Centre thathas a 2015 target completion date,will encompass one facility.

This will allow for continuedsalmon production and watershed/environmental based education.

The stewardship centre will incor-porate a classroom and offices forMetro Vancouver Parks interpretersand KEEPS (Kanaka Education andEnvironmental Partnership Society).

McClain describes the hatchery as“the centre-point” for salmon andwatershed education in the area.

“The most important thing withhaving a stewardship centre, wecan have workshops, communityevents, meetings… you name it takeplace in that facility, and literallywelcome everyone, not only MetroVancouverites, but the world, essen-tially,” McClain said.

The project is supported by theDepartment of Fisheries and Oceans,Metro Vancouver Parks, PacificParklands Foundation, the District ofMaple Ridge, and the Pacific SalmonFoundation.

“Without the Pacific Salmon

Foundation’s help in past yearsas well as now and in the future– they’ve made a tremendous con-tribution to this and many otherprojects throughout the LowerMainland and B.C.,” McClain said.

The hatchery portion of the projectis slated to cost just under $300,000.As a whole, the project, includingthe stewardship centre, has a rough-ly $1 million price tag.

“This has been a vision of KEEPS’for 12 years, along with MetroVancouver Parks,” McClain said.“The culmination of this is incred-ibly important. It makes me proudto be part of this because you see all

the hard work that goes onthat most people are noteven aware of. Much ofthat is volunteer work.”

The hatchery on 256thStreet is operated byKEEPS in partnership withMetro Vancouver and theDFO.

On any given year,150,000 coho and 200,000chum are raised at thehatchery.

In odd years, as manyas 400,000 pink eggs arebrought to the site toincubate and are releaseddownstream of Cliff Falls.

The fish that are releasedare done in such a waythat it sustains the stocksand provides marked cohofor retention in the sportfishery.

The hatchery also servesas an ecological outdoorclassroom for studentsattending local schools andbeyond.

“We provides eggsfor programs in schoolsthroughout the north sideof the Fraser and all theway into Vancouver,”McClain said. “On anygiven year, as many as 30to 40 schools will receiveour eggs.”

Students raise the eggsright through to hatchingand will feed the fish oncethey emerge.

The hatchery is also asatellite facility.

A number of the fishraised there go to many

different watersheds north of theFraser, including Stoney Creek, theBrunette River System, Byrne Creek,and Spanish Banks Creek.

The stewardship centre projectcould get a financial boost to thetune of $100,000, with the public’shelp, through the Shell – FuelingChange contest.

Pay attentionto stay alive

It’s spring break this week.That means kids aren’t in school this

week.And that means they could be any-

where, anytime this week.And that means drivers have to be

extra careful this week.And so BCAA has some timely advice

– advice that we’d like to share thisweek.

BCAA has passed along some shock-ing statistics about children and roadsafety. Ominously, the statistics origin-ate with the BC Coroners Service.

More than 2,400 children pedes-trians are seriously injured each year inCanada.

Thirty are killed.The kids most at risk for pedes-

trian-related injuries and fatalities arebetween the ages of fiveand 14 years.

“As the weatherwarms up, more andmore children ventureoutside to play in theirfront yards, on theirstreets and in neighbourhood play-grounds,” notes BCAA’s Mark Donnelly.

They’re at an age when kids are easi-ly distracted already, but throw in somenice spring weather and a few days outof school… add just one distracted driv-er, and it’s a formula for disaster.

We all know that one of the mostdangerous distractions identified fordrivers is cellphone activity – talking ortexting while driving is deadly danger-ous.

But a University of Alabama atBirmingham study shows that cell-phones can be dangerous in pedes-trians’ hands, as well. In fact, childrenwho talk on cellphones while crossingthe street have as much as a one-thirdgreater likelihood of being hit or nearlyhit by a car.

So pedestrians need to put downtheir cellphones and pay attention, too.

A lot of folks pretended theywere Irish on Sunday and worefunny green hats and got roaringdrunk on green beer and stufflike that.

And a lot of folks didn’t.Among those who didn’t pre-

tend to be Irish were most folkswho actually are Irish or of Irishextraction.

Apparently, they’re not crazyabout Canadian St. Patrick’s Day“traditions.”

Hmmm… I wonder why? Couldit be that they’re not crazy aboutbeing automatically being associated with wear-ing funny green hats, getting roaring drunk ongreen beer, and stuff like that?

A survey commissioned by Ancestry.ca justbefore St. Pat’s iconic day indicates that about60 per cent of Irish-Canadians wouldn’t be cele-brating. (I’m guessing most of them are the oneswho are as thrilled to be labelled as hyphenatedCanadians about as much as I like being called a“Dutch-Canadian”… but more on that a bit lateron.)

The Ancestry survey revealed that about aquarter of all Canadians claim to have Irishancestry. That’s about nine million people – andif my calculations are correct, that means some-where between five and six million people getannoyed every time you put on one of those sillyhats and order a green beer (that’s on top ofeveryone you annoy when you get falling-downdrunk).

Remarkably, those five to six million peoplewith real Irish association think that things likethat serve to under-appreciate the value of theircontributions to overall Canadian culture.

Go figure.In fact, a significant number of Canadians of

Irish extraction are actually embarrassed by theirgenerally perceived association with shamrocksand leprechauns.

Frankly, I’d be embarrassed, too, by general

misperceptions that my ancestryautomatically made me a cleverlad whose intelligence was most-ly geared toward smooth-talkingmyself out of gainful activitiesand into free beers and nap-times.

I’m not even going to getinto how I’d feel about obtuseperceptions of genetic proclivitytowards luck or chasing rainbowsand little people to steal theirpots of gold.

Personally, I get offendedenough by louts who guess at

my low-lander heritage and cleverly ask me howmany dikes I’ve had my finger in.

Gee. I’ve never heard that one before. Youmust be VERY clever to have come up with thatone!

Or wooden shoes. I absolutely double up withlaughter every time someone asks me why I’mnot wearing mine.

Actually, the wooden shoe lines wouldn’tbother me by half, if they weren’t so ignorantlyderisive – during breaks, my Dad made woodenshoes for spare cash when he was a kid andworking in his Dad’s bicycle shop.

So you see, it’s not the wooden shoes thatbother me – it’s the stupidity that they reveal inpeople who really know nothing about woodenshoes or my ancestry.

And tulips… don’t get me going about tulips!They’re beautiful, they’re edible (they kept alot of people alive during the Nazi occupationthrough the Second World War)… and they’renot actually from Holland. They’re from Turkey.

I’m not ashamed or embarrassed by my Dutchheritage, by any stretch. But like most Canadianswhose ancestral origins are misunderstood here(which covers probably just about all immigratedgene lines, including those originating fromIreland), I’m not Dutch-Canadian.

I’m Canadian.And remarkably, I can’t skate worth a darn.

Where Am ‘i’?

Heritage restoredDear Editor,

Mr. Bazett stated that he has lived inMaple Ridge for the past 10 years [‘i’ founddisgusting, Mar. 14 Letters, TIMES], and heis disgusted.

Why?I saw the same photo in your paper, and

said, “Hey! That’s the Bank of Montreal.I remember opening up my first accountthere! I got my first loan there!”

And as kids growing up in Hammond, mybuddies and I loved going up the stairs andpeeking into the bank on a Saturday, whenthey were closed. That was in the late 60s.

As for his statements that it is not a locallandmark, he needs to do some research.There is a lot of history behind this land-mark, and I take offence to his comments,as this building along with others in thearea of Hammond paved the way for manyto live in our community. Hammond is richin history.

As for comments about the Hells Angels(stupid), as far as I know, this is a legitim-ate business and the owners have lovinglyrestored the old Bank of Montreal.

Mr. Bazett should get off the Internet andgo see some heritage in Port Hammond.

Dear Editor,Do politicians grow into arrogance after

getting into power [Politicians all growinto arrogance, Mar. 14 Letters, TIMES]? Ithink not. It is the unrealistic expectationsof the voter that changes over time.

Before an election, many voters haveunrealistic expectations of what a govern-ment should do or be able to accomplish.Voters expect that the government will beable to cut health care wait times to days,solve homelessness, or solve global warm-

ing. Voters expect the government to puttheir personal pet peeves or concerns asfirst priorities.

Politicians will promise to do what theycan. When in power, a government haslimited resources and many, many voterexpectations. All need to be prioritized.

It is impossible for any government tomeet all expectations. If they do not meetvoter expectations, they are considered arro-gant and indifferent.

Educational expectations are a goodexample of past changed loyalties. TheNDP is supported by teachers and teacherunions, and once the NDP government isnot able to deliver unrealistic goals, they arenot supported for re-election.

We now have a lot of voters who areagainst the current government simplybecause they perceive them to be arrogant.Instead of voting on issues, voters will voteagainst a government because it has notreached their unrealistic expectations. Theywill unrealistically expect a new govern-ment to achieve miracles.

Voters need to be realistic. Anyone whovotes against a government because theysee them as arrogant, should look at theirexpectations with some realism. Theyshould ask themselves if a change of gov-ernment would actually meet their expecta-tions. It is far better to vote for policy anddirection.

Dear Editor,It is with dismay and disappoint-

ment that the teaching staff of MapleRidge Elementary became aware ofthe 2013/2014 budget shortfall andthe School Board Budget CuttingSurvey by School District 42.

We feel that school trustees, asan elected body and as advocates of publiceducation, have been given the responsibil-ity to protect and support the students andchildren in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.The premise of the survey is that anyoneand everyone who completes the surveyfavours additional cuts to the educationbudget. The survey does not allow for those

who participate to express oppos-ition to cuts or reductions.

Parents and employee groups arebeing asked to further weaken ourincreasingly broken-down system.

We urge the school board to takea stronger stand for adequate fund-ing from the Ministry of Education.

The Supreme Court ofCanada has ruled we haveto give Winnipeg back.

In a ruling that couldcost tax payers billionsof dollars, the SupremeCourt of Canada ruledthe Metis were wrongedand that Canada failedto live up to its promisein the agreement thatbrought Manitoba into theCanadian Federation in1870.

The government’s appar-ent main defence was thatit happened more than140 years ago and today’staxpayers should not befinancially responsible foran apparent wrong fromseven generations ago.

The court decided infavour of the Metis.

It was Queen Victoriawho demanded, as part ofher agreement to transferRupert’s lands to Canada,which had been purchasedfrom the Hudson’s BayCompany, 1.4 million acres

of land along the Red andother rivers in Manitobawere to be given to the7,000 Metis children, asa head start in the futuredevelopment.

There is a great dealof discussion about howmany got what uselessland, but within anothergeneration, 90 per cent ofwhatever land it was hadbeen squandered.

Lisa Shepherd, localpresident of the GoldenEars Metis Society, told meshe was hosting a presen-tation by genealogist, Ms.Katerick, this past Sundayat the Bonson CommunityCentre, about how to fillout the registration toobtain Metis citizenship.

Lisa, along with thehierarchy of the BC MetisAssociation, were not surehow to answer my ques-tions about who is Metisand how the distinction isdetermined.

They indicated that,if you believe you are aMetis, then you are.

Their view is, “It isabout preserving the cul-ture.”

It must be. Who elsewould want to live ina city that has a ditcharound it and big insectsthat eat you?

In trying to understandthe significance of theSupreme Court ruling andits repercussions, I reachedout to one of the best rep-resentatives this commun-ity has ever had, our pastmember ofParliament,Reform(one ofa kind)SenatorGerry St.Germaine, who is a proudMetis from Winnipeg.

He is appearing thisweek as a witness in theSenate discussions includ-ing who is Metis.

I thought they were allFrench.

Gerry informed me theFrench were “Michifs,”and the Scots were “Half-breeds.”

“Metis” means: mixedblood. OMG! I may be oneof them!

This becomes a slipperyslope.

In the early 1900s, sev-eral southern states in theUS passed laws that saidone drop of Negro bloodwas enough to make youblack.

Currently in Hawaii, the

members of the HawaiianNation claim that, if youhave one drop of Hawaiianblood, you have the rightto liberate the islands.

I cannot imagine whatthe qualifications are goingto be to be recognizedas Metis, but as long asthey only want land inManitoba, I think theanswer should be, “Yes!”

about are the descendantsof the people from thegeographical area wherethe culture and govern-ment existed before 1870– people like CuthbertGrant and Louis Riel.

In hindsight we realizethat, in their minds, theywere just standing up fortheir rights against theHudson’s Bay Companyand got a promise fromQueen Victoria that hasnot been honoured.

their profits to BC Children’s Hospital in honour of a fellow

She added, “As the pace-makers got better and bet-ter, I always seemed to getthe newer, most improved

kind of pacemakers.”Her current pacemaker

will go no lower than 60beats per minute, and willrise up to 195.

“But I’m also 100 percent dependent on it,”MacWilliams noted. “Somepeople may only need it 50per cent of the time, or 25per cent of the time, but thisthing [pacemaker], it rocks.”

MacWilliams continuesto lead an extremely activelife. Mom toher 16-year-old daughterCarley, sheis currentlytraining fora body com-petition, andhas madelifestylechanges toreduce stress, as well.

Once, as an aerobicsinstructor, when partici-pants were lagging behind,she challenged them: if shecan lead the class relyingon a pacemaker, they toocan overcome whateverobstacles they’re facing, andfinish the class.

While there have beensome small hiccups alongthe way, MacWilliams isthankful for the work doc-tors have done on herthrough the years.

“It kind of gets my goatwhen I hear people com-plaining, ‘Well this doctordoesn’t know what he’stalking about, and blah,blah, blah.’ But they’redoing the very best they canwith the technology they

have,” MacWilliams said.She rarely talks about her

pacemaker, and never usesit as an excuse.

“I kept it to myself,”MacWilliams said. “Whenyou have it when you’reborn, you kind of just gowith it. I don’t know lifeany different.”

But she admits her chal-lenges give her a differentappreciation for life.

“When I was little I neverthought Iwas goingto get mar-ried, neverthoughtanyonewould everwant me,”MacWilliamssaid. “But Iwas lucky

enough to find someone,and we created the mostbeautiful little girl, to whichI was told that I wouldnever have, and I’m verythankful for it.”

Jeff Campbell has anew lease on life afterbeing treated for abrain tumour – thanks

to his furry friend.The 48-year-old was an

accountant prior to his diag-nosis, and is now on dis-ability.

In the time that followeda second surgery to removethe tumour, Campbellwhiled away his time athome.

“I was sitting on thecouch, doing nothing, notfeeling good,” he said.

That was before Digbycame into his life.

The three-year-old NovaScotia duck tolling retrievermay not be aware of it, buthe has energized Campbell,giving him a new purposeduring their twice-a-week springtimeexcursions to JerrySulina Park, a 6.2-hectare green spacein Maple Ridge.

Before he dis-covered the park,Campbell walkedDigby around theneighbourhoodwhere he lives inPort Coquitlam.

“He [Digby] isgoing to force meto go [outside], have to atleast get my butt off thecouch and feeling sorryfor myself,” Campbellsaid, looking back on whyDigby joined his family. “Itworked out really good butafter a week of walking theneighbourhood, I was boredsilly.”

During his travelsCampbell came across awoman who also owned aretriever.

She showed him a fewof the techniques she hadbeen working on in trainingher dog. Instantly, Campbell

realized this kindof exercise is whatDigby, and he, forthat matter, needed.

“Without a doubt,that ‘retrieve’concept is bredright into them,”Campbell said. “Onehundred per cent,it’s in their blood. Itgave me a purpose.Now, not only doI have to train thisdog, I have to figure

out how to do it.”He connected with the

B.C. Labrador RetrieverClub, and early on, he waswelcomed into their fold.

“They got me going, ultim-ately, with duck hunting andother bird-type hunting,” hesaid. “The dog componentof it is not about hunting.

It’s about takingyour dog to thatlevel, to the abil-ity where youcan go huntingwith your dogand it’s goingto do what youwant it to do,when you wantit to do it.”

Once he was clearedto drive again, Campbellmotored east to find a suit-able training ground forhimself and Digby. This typeof dog training blends landwith a water component,and Campbell had a hardtime finding the right venue.

He knew the Jerry SulinaPark was there after helooked it up on the internet,but the big draw for himwas the fact it also offers anoff-leash dog area.

In the spring, the two areat the park an average oftwice a week. But in thesummer, once the lily padsgrow in, the water becomestoo thick with vegetation forDigby to swim there.

The incidence ofoverweight pets hasincreased by 40 percent in the past five

years to the point that nowmore than half of dogs and catsare overweight or obese.

Most of this happens due tolack of awareness that theirpets are obese or guilt about“depriving” their pets whencontrolling portions or with-holding treats.

Now there is a new approachto weight management thanksto the researchers at Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

The Pitt Meadows Marauders’ season endedon a losing note Saturday afternoon at theLangley Events Centre.

The Marauders fell 68-63 to the Sir WinstonChurchill Bulldogs in the game deciding 13thand 15th place at the 2013 B.C. senior boysTriple A basketball championship.

“Today we just weren’t ready to play at thelevel of the opponent,” Marauders veteran headcoach Rich Goulet said, moments after the finalbuzzer sounded. “And when it [the Maraudersraising their level] happened we came backand made a game of it.”

Ultimately, Pitt Meadows Secondary’s squad,playing its fourth game in as many days, lostits mojo at the 68th edition of the prestigioustournament.

The Bulldogs outscored the Marauders 30-15during the second quarter and 40-24 in the firsthalf in the event centre’s gymnasium. Despitea fourth quarter in which Pitt Meadows had adistinct 23-13 advantage in points, the canyon-sized hole they found themselves in was far toodeep.

“We just didn’t come out nearly strongenough,” said Grade 12 guard SebastienMarshall. “We came out flat. We came out likewe’re going to lose, and we lost.”

In the final game of his high school career,centre Jordan Rich led the Marauders with 16points. Grade 12 guard Sanj Toor (13 points)and Grade 10 forward Graham Smith (10points) also reached double digits in scoring forPitt Meadows.

Bulldogs star Mindy Minhas scored a game-high 21 points.

The Marauders bookmarked a pair of lossesto the Bulldogs – the Vancouver team edgedPitt Meadows 67-64 in overtime to openthe tourney Tuesday – with one-sided winsWednesday versus Burnaby Mountain Lionsand Thursday against the Mount Baker Wild.

Goulet was candid when assessing his team’soverall performance at the B.C.’s.

“We didn’t play very well,” he said. “Notcompared to past years.”

The Marauders enjoyed a resurgence inJanuary, then struggled with injuries that keptthe walking wounded from training.

“You could see that as we were coming inhere,” Goulet said. “We weren’t quite the sameas we were when we won the Fraser ValleyNorth league.”

Marshall said the Marauders weren’t able toplay to their potential.

“I thought we could play better, but that hap-pens, sometimes,” he said. “We were probablypretty tired. We played some pretty tough ballcoming into the tournament. I guess it’s kind ofbittersweet.”

The Marauders’ opening day loss to theBulldogs was filled with drama. With just sec-onds left on the clock and his team down 61-58, Pitt Meadows’ Alejandro Canjura picked off

a pass before tossing up a shot from just pasthalf-court. The ball arced into the hoop with3.3 seconds remaining to tie the score at 61and send the game into overtime. The Bulldogsoutscored the Marauders 6-3 during the extrasession.

The loss pushed the Marauders out of medalcontention, which meant they were playing forpride over the final three days of the tourney.In a way, the setback took some pressure offthe players.

“As much as we would have loved to win,we would have had to play [B.C.’s No. 1-ranked team and provincial finalist] WalnutGrove and we would have had to regain ourfocus,” Marshall said. “We lost so we had toaccept that fact, and then we just started play-ing basketball, and that was a lot of fun. Wegot to enjoy the tournament a little bit more.”

win by a 20-point margin.Leading 46-42 after three quarters, the

Marauders owned the fourth stanza, out-scoringthe Lions 21-5.

Rich had another fine game for Pitt Meadows,scoring 29 points while blocking five shots.

Mount Baker Wild 19In a game that got underway at 8:30 a.m.

Thursday morning, the Mount Baker Wildreceived a jolting wake-up call from theMarauders.

Pitt Meadows dominated from start to finish,leading 35-10 at halftime and never looseningits grip, outscoring Mount Baker 25-5 in thethird quarter and 15-4 in the fourth to win 75-19.

Quickly realizing the Wild was overmatched,Goulet used his entire bench. The result was avery balanced attack with four players hittingdouble figures in points.

Smith led the way with 13 points, whileCanjura had 12. Rich (11 points) and guardEnzo Tadeo (10 points) were the otherMarauders scoring in double figures.

In total, 13 Marauders scored two points ormore.
