Children’s Services provides a safe, healthy and inclusive environment for children aged 0-12 years to participate in leisure and recreational activities. Recognizing that all children have strengths, our programs build on a child’s capacity to learn, play and be active. In a non-competitive environment, children make friends, become leaders and contribute to their own health and well being. Children’s Services acknowledges that recreation is essential to the healthy development of children and youth.

FACILITY EXCELLENCE AWARDAfter 10 years of operation, the Greg Moore Youth Recreation Centre in Maple Ridge is still described as a `state of the art`facility. The facility supports a wide range of activities and events for the community and fosters an environment in which community organizations work as a team to provide services that meet the needs of its youth.

As a central hub for youth, parents, families and youth-focused community agencies, the Centre features a large, open active area with a rock climbing wall, multi-purpose room, teach kitchen, concession area, community meeting space, com-puter lab and more. The active area supports plenty of activities for youth such as skateboarding, volleyball, basketball, informal sports, rock climbing, youth dances and special events.

Extensive youth engagement and community input created an optimal design addressing as many needs as possible at the Greg Moore Youth Recreation Centre. For this, the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association proudly presented the Centre with a 2011 Facility Excellence Award. Watch for more in-formation at www.mapleridge.ca

of activities, facilities, services, talents, research, and special events;

• Provide easy access to information (in the form of a list and map) on assets and where they are located; and

• The process will support and connect people who participate in the arts and strengthen the cultural fabric of our community.

Neighbourhoods

Wildwood’s First Annual Neighbourhood Block PartyWhat a great day we had!...we pulled together a BBQ and Pot Luck social on a sunny spring afternoon. Chef Harlan Fowler cooked up some great hamburgers and hot dogs while many neighbours contributed added dishes. The kids played in the park and enjoyed the portable fishing hole we provided; bal-loons and bubbles were a big hit. It was a great excuse to get outside and play. We also enjoyed an hour of live bluegrass music provided by “Five on a String” band - what a perfect way to liven up the day! The singing and strumming got a few feet dancing and really put everyone in a festive mood. We passed a donation can around to pay the musicians a few bucks. By late afternoon things were winding down, but ev-eryone agreed that it was a successful day with about 60 friends and neighbours coming out to celebrate their community! We’re proud of our Wildwood neighbour-hood, and plan to make this an annual event - next year will hopefully be even bigger and better!- Wildwood Neighbourhood
