    FACTS ABOUTPRENATAL NUTRITION IN THE

    DEVELOPING WORLD

At least 20% of the burden of disease in

children below the age of five is related to

poor maternal healthand nutrition. The first 1000 days from conception

until the age of two are the most critical

for a childs growth and development.

When maternal nutrition suffers, the negative impact is doubled the child

also suffers from the lack of adequate nutrition. If this happens within thefirst 1000 days of a childs growth and development, the effects can last alifetime. Vitamins and minerals are essential to healthy growth anddevelopment, yet over 2 billion people across our world experiencevitamin and mineral deficiencies. Without key micronutrients, a childnever fully develops and whole populations never reach their potential;when the deficiencies are widespread, education gains are eroded,health-care budgets are drained, and the economic workforce isweakened (Investing in the Future: A United Call to Action on Vitamin andMineral Deficiencies, 2009).

Fortunately, the health benefits of prenatal vitamins are well-documented,and MAP International is already responding to the hidden hunger withthis proven solution. Through our global footprint of partnerships,MAP reached over 2.5 million women in 2010-11 with prenatalvitamins.

Partner program requests have come in recently from Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Liberia, and WestBank/Gaza, along with several other countries that receive ongoing support. Over the next 6 months (October 2011 March 2012), MAP has field requests for 50 pallets of prenatal vitamins with 7 months or greater dating upon arrival intoour Global Distribution Center. Donations would have an immediate impact in the following hospitals and health centers:

For every pallet of prenatal vitamins, over 1,700 women will receive a full year of nutritional support. Please joinus in the global effort to improve the lives of those without access to adequate nutrition.
