Map Book Generation The purpose of the Map Book Developer’s Sample is to allow for the creation and output of map books. Map books are multi page documents based on a dataset and an index grid representing the pages. The Index grid for a map book represents how the dataset set should be divided up for plotting at a more workable scale. For instance, if a road atlas is being created, the index grid would represent the individual pages or the atlas. For a Land Records office, the index grid would represent the distribution of 1:400, 1:100, and 1:50 scale maps for the county. (Excerpt from DS Mapbook instructions)

Map Book Generation

• The purpose of the Map Book Developer’s Sample is to allow for the creation and output of map books.

Working in Mapbook

I am not a expert at map book what I am showing you are things I have learned by using the program

The map book was set up by our vender as part of our remapping project.

If I cannot figure out what to do I ask my friend Harry

If he doesn't know I call our support.

• To use these tools, the following pieces are needed:

• A dataset to output• An index grid to divide up the dataset into

pages (the grid may already exist as a feature class in your database, or the grid generation tool in the Map Book toolset can be used)

• A single layout to use with each page

Page 5: Map Book Generation

• Let’s look at how this works • The first example is an area of

Parkersburg district (P.D.) an area around the City of Parkersburg

Page 6: Map Book Generation

PRINTING MAPS

• There are thirty two tax maps in the P.D. without mapbook I could print one big Map of P.D. but you could not see the details such as lot # lot dimensions Parcel numbers and so on.

ZOOM PRINT

• Next choice we could zoom into different Areas and print that area

• If your maps where cut out on a north south grid you could make this work but our maps are not so this would be very confusing.

Mapbook

• Fortunately we have another choice DS Mapbook which is what we have been using.

• Mapbook gives us a way to print multiple maps form one esri project

• You draw a Index grid around the area that you wish to print or they can be automatically generated.

Page 11: Map Book Generation

Generate the Grid

• In Arc Toolbox you can do a Dissolve on the District and Tax Map Number to create your grid. Then do a buffer on that grid.

Page 12: Map Book Generation

• Mapbookgrid- Here lies the lines that encase each different tax map which allows us to print individual tax maps. I like for the grids to have or 50 foot buffer to allow for printing the match lines on the roads, adjoining tax maps, and to make sure that all lines on the subject map print.

Index Grid

• Number that grid to match the map number by opening the attribute table with the grid selected and assigning that map # to the Index Grid.

MAP SERIES

• When you get all of the maps finished you create a map series in the mapbook tab.

Page 24: Map Book Generation

Map series

Click on Map Book select Add Map Series When editing in your map projects You have to delete the map series and

install a new map series for the changes to reflect in mapbook.

Page 27: Map Book Generation

Finish Series

• Click finish. • Click on one of the maps to see if it has the data you need.• If the map did not cut out right you did not

check all the boxes.• Before printing click on the display tab and

make sure all of your data is turned on.

Field Maps

• We customize the field maps and make them a smaller size than the master maps in the map room.

• The field maps are 18 X 24 and we are not to worried about the scale so we created two new fields in the attributes table scale2 and angle2.

Page 30: Map Book Generation

Customize Field Maps

• Then we can blow up the field map and rotate them to maximize the size of the map on the smaller paper size so you can still read them.

• We use an interactive scale and add in a shadow layer to show adjoining parcels on other maps.

• We have two mapbook projects but they both use the same mapbook Attributes Table we just add a scale 2 and angle 2 field to the table.

Page 31: Map Book Generation

Add Fields too Attributes Table

• To add a field • click on options at the bottom of the table and

select add field name: scale2 Alias: scale2• Type: Double. Same for angle then you can

change the scale or angle of rotation for the smaller maps Independently of the larger maps. Then you don’t have to maintain two attributes tables or keep changing them back and forth in one table.

Map Template

• Working on your map template• Lets link the adjoining map numbers to the

attributes table.• Select the number you want to link

Page 38: Map Book Generation

Click on map series. Select Tag with index layer field.

All maps linked

• When you link all map numbers on one map to the map field in the attributes table all maps in that series are linked.

• The numbers can be move by using the arrows on the keyboard or with the select elements arrow.

• The Select element arrow will select anything in your template.

Page 42: Map Book Generation

Shadow layer

• The field people like the shadow layer. • It shows the adjoining parcels and

map/parcel number in a very light color.• I use the check plots field maps to

determine the adjoining map numbers it really makes this chore easy.
