Our concert band percussion section at our May Concert

May Concert – Monika’s Reflection My number one motivation for joining Southern Area Concert Band was the opportunity to share in the love of creating music (socialising with beauti-ful, like-minded people is a close second!). I joined the band in late 2015 thanks to a recommendation from Nick Roney and have really cherished the chance to whip out the good ol’ sax again. The poor thing had been left untouched in its case since the stage band days of secondary school. The SACB’s annual May Concert held on the 21st of the month was a 2 hour ‘taster’ of – what was really – hours upon hours of shared organisation, en-thusiasm and commitment. Led by a very diverse and supportive team of musical conductors, we were able to share our musical passions to a very receptive audience inside the Kingston Town Hall. Our repertoire showcased music of composers past and present. Darryn began the afternoon with toe-tappers, 42nd Street Overture and Holly-wood. My Omi, a dedicated SACB supporter, declared Bolero and Sousa’s Nobles of the Mystic Shrine as her favourites. Jacinta Ewers guided the band through a magical rendition of Lux Aurum-que. Jacinta, my words here cannot fully express my gratitude to you for helping us to take this incredible piece of music, enclose it fully with our hearts and to finally release it, teeming with emotion. Another noteworthy performance was that of Sheltering Sky. From my chair on the stage, the pure tones of Mel’s saxophone as she soloed throughout the piece to its climax was a wonder to be heard. An SACB favourite, Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons, took the audience on a playful adventure whilst the classical “Liberty Bell” rounded off our perfor-mance spectacularly. Once again, I’d like to thank all involved in putting this concert together. Your work does not go unnoticed and indeed, your efforts absolutely SHINE on concert day. To Peter, our forever optimistic and jubilant president, thank you for your energy in introducing each new work and revving up the audience participation! To Darryn, Jacinta and Nicole (despite her overseas absence), a massive thank you for your musical direction, purpose and ded-ication. To our volunteers and audience supporters, thank you! To my fel-low SACB members, THANK YOU! That each and every week we can assem-ble together, share in the wonders of music and be given the chance to pre-sent this to the wider community makes every moment worth it.

Member’s News A big congratulations to Ryan from our saxophone

section whose graduate film, with original music

composed by Tray, recently premiered at the Astor

alongside other selected films from the graduate

cohort!

Faux Grandpa: A quirky comedy short film about A

nineteen year old girl and her single mother inter-

viewing candidates to fill the role of a grandfather,

leading to the establishment of an unconventional

family that has a lot to learn from each other. It

made it's festival premier at the prestigious St Kilda

Film Festival on the 24th of may at the St kilda town

hall. The short was also a nominee for the 'best

youth short film' award. Ryan says "St Kilda Film

Festival is easily my favourite Australian film festival.

So it was such an honour for it to be the first festival

it plays at. It should help us heaps in getting

shortlisted into other festivals as well!"

Another success at our annual May Concert!

Training Band The Training Band have had a wonderful last few months prepar-ing for and performing their Annual June Concert at the Kingston Arts Centre on the 4th June. ‘Whisper in the Winds’ showcased the talents, hard work and community spirit of all of the band members. It was a true delight for the audience, as they were treated to a wide range of music played by a group of pas-sionate and talented musicians. Special mention must go to Erin, who played a gorgeous trumpet solo in ‘Embraceable You’. The performance would not have been possible without the support of the wider and band community, com-mittee, family and supporters. I know that Jacinta and Nicole would like to thank everyone involved, both the playing members and those who support the band. Speaking of conductors, this con-cert would not have been possible without the dedicated and passion-ate leadership of Jacinta and Ni-cole. The band are very fortunate to have such inspiring and motivat-ed conductors leading them. At the moment, both conductors are en-joying extended overseas travel and, as such, have asked me to step in to lead the band in their ab-sence. Whilst I am a new face to many band members, as work commitments necessitated a leave of absence from the band, I actual-ly joined the Southern Area Con-cert Band in 2004. I have loved be-ing a part of the band over the years, both as a trumpeter and conductor, and I am thrilled to have been asked back to help out during Jacinta and Nicole’s absence. I am particularly pleased to see how well the band is doing and to have the opportunity to work with such a spirited, enthusiastic and welcom-ing group! In the rehearsals since ‘Whispers in the Wind’, the band have been sight-reading and re-hearsing some new music, working towards performances later in the year. We have also welcomed along players who have either re-turned to the band or come along to try it out for the first time. It’s wonderful to see the band continue to grow! I look forward to seeing all of our new (and long-standing!) members back at rehearsal after a week of well-deserved rest during the school holidays. Jenny

The Training Band at their annual May concert!

From the M.D.

Exciting News – “Massed Bands” is back for 2017. This is a fantastic day of music making

with our friends from the other bands of the City of Kingston, and after a short break

from the event in 2016, it’s back on the calendar on July 30th this year, and will be held

at the Kingston City Hall from 2:30PM. So please bring your family, friends and acquaint-

ances and help the three bands celebrate The Rise of the Phoenix.

Following this fantastic concert, I will be taking six weeks leave for a well-earned (well, at

least I think so) holiday to the United Kingdom. During my absence, I have organised for

Mat Klohs and his team from the Defence Force School of Music to lead the band through

the rehearsal process and preparation for the 2017 Annual September concert. I have no

idea what the repertoire will be as yet, but given the music that we have worked on with

Matt earlier this year, I am looking forward to hearing it at the concert the week after I

return home. This concert will be on September 17th at the Kingston City Hall from

2:30PM, but there will be more detail distributed closer to the time.

The Australian National Band Championships will be held in Melbourne over the Easter

weekend in 2018. As part of our preparation for this event, we will be holding a band

rehearsal camp over the weekend of 23rd to 25th of February. This weekend is a critical

part of our preparation for the Nationals, and we ask all members to make every effort to

get involved. Preliminary planning has already started, and we will be asking for a depos-

it very soon. This weekend promises to be a terrific mix of music making and socialising –

both as important as one another in terms of building the quality of our amazing ensem-

ble.

I look forward to seeing you all at the massed bands concert on July 30th.

Until next time…

Darryn.
