Year in and year out, you show us—and tell us—how much you appreciate the Sturgis Library. You come to the Library to borrow books and other library materials, to sit and read or browse the internet, to connect with other members of the community and to use our special collections and research archives. You attend programs, events, workshops and classes. You participate in reading and discussion groups, or bring your children to story hour. Sometimes you come to escape the heat of summer or the cold of winter. But most importantly, you come! Some of you visit only a few times as year, but take the time to stop in and say hello when you’re on the Cape. Others bring friends to tour our historic building, or bring a relative to look up family history. In last year’s community survey, we asked you to comment on what you thought the role of the Sturgis Library should be. Here’s a sampling of what some of you said: Sturgis Library should be a lending library, a research center and a community gathering place. Sturgis Library should preserve Barnstable and Cape Cod history for future generations. Sturgis Library should be a place where all ages feel welcome—a place to encourage learning, research, discussion and social interaction. Sturgis Library should be a place for learning and sharing of knowledge and a place to foster an appreciation for the written word in all its forms. Sturgis Library should be a place for reflection and connection. Sturgis Library should be a place to have fun! Whatever your reason for appreciating the Sturgis Library, we are most grateful for your interest and your support. Your generous donations each year fund annual expenses, including new library books, movies, music, periodicals, games, staff salaries, building and grounds maintenance and repairs, heat, electricity and other utilities, CLAMS fees for the circulation and cataloging of library materials, computer resources, equipment maintenance and repairs, collection maintenance and preservation and much more. Since we receive only 40% of our annual operating budget from the Town of Barnstable each year, we must raise 60% of our budget through donations, grants, investment income and other funding sources. Your donations make it possible to meet our funding needs and to provide exemplary library services to the community. We look forward to meeting your needs—and your expectations—in the years ahead. Many thanks! STURGIS LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT FALL 2013

“Sturgis Library admirably serves as a traditional library as well as one that is reaching forward

technologically; it is a museum of Cape Cod history; it is a used bookshop; it is a

Blockbuster (a kind of video store that once existed); it is a forum for authors and other presenters; it is a place of contemplation (such places grow more rare); it is a place where old friends are found for

the first time.” Comment from the Library’s
