Dear Parents and Community Members,
God, who created us and made us who we are, we come to you at the beginning of this season of Lent.
We ask you to bless us, to continue to walk with us, to lead us and teach us your will and your ways.
Guide us and strengthen us for the days that lie ahead. Keep us faithful to the good things we’ve planned,
and if through weakness we should go astray bring us back and heal us – don’t let us turn away.
We ask this of you God our creator and maker of all that is good.
Amen. P&F Congratulations to our hard-working P&F committee on an extremely successful Welcome Community Sundowner last Friday afternoon. It was lovely to meet some of the new families who attended and it was wonderful to see people enjoying each others’ company, while the children ran and played. The next P&F meeting will be on Tuesday 14 March at 6.00pm, everyone is welcome. NAPLAN National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy is an annual national assessment of all students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Academic Scholarship Exam Saturday 6 May 2017
Orientation Day Thursday 30 November 2017 Parents are welcome to come along on Friday at 9.00am in the Hall. Parking Please find attached to this newsletter parking guidelines, as a reminder. There have been a number of concerns expressed about people parking on the brick paved islands at the entrance to the main car park or along the verge, inhibiting visibility for people leaving the car park. Just a reminder that if the car park is busy in the morning, you can use the ‘Kiss-and-drop’ area and drive through in front of the Church to drop your children in front of the Prayer House, right near the school gate. Also, a reminder to parents to remain in the car when using the afternoon ‘In-car pick-up’. This is to ensure the flow of cars through this area to enable safe delivery of all students to their parents. Please be assured that staff on duty will call children when their car arrives, it is not necessary for parents to walk down to the assembly area to collect children. Playground Equipment after school Please be aware that the playground equipment is out of bounds for students after school, due to duty of care issues. Many students are meeting up here but for safety reasons we are unable to allow play in this area after school hours. Personal Devices at school If you child has a mobile phone or brings an iPad, iPod or other device to school possibly for use on the bus on the way home, please note that these need to be left at the office in the morning and collected in the afternoon. For security reasons, they are not to be left in student bags or classrooms or accessed during the school day. Harmony Day As a way of partnering with our neighbouring school, we will be celebrating Harmony Day with Dardanup Primary School on Monday 13 March. We will take our lunch and walk to DPS to participate in afternoon activities before walking back to school. Parents are welcome to join us for the afternoon activities. Nature Play Plans are on display in the undercover area and requests for donations and for assistance will be sent home soon. This will be a staged project with ‘Busy Bee’ dates to begin construction communicated soon. Special thanks to Vicki Noonan for her work so far. Dyslexia-Speld Foundation presenting a Parent Information Evening On Thursday 6 April, a presenter from DSF will hold an information session designed to answer the following questions: What does the current research tell us about reading acquisition? Why do some children struggle with reading and writing? What is a learning disability? What is dyslexia? What are the causes? What can we do about it? How important is the home/school partnership? The session will go for 1 ½ hours in the school hall, from 6.30-8.00pm, all are welcome to attend. Photo Permission From time to time, photos may be taken at school events of parents and other adults. These photos may be used on the school managed FaceBook page or in the school newsletter. If you do not give permission for your photo to be used, please let the school know. Sacramental Information and Registration If you were unable to attend last Thursday evening, you need to contact Fr Wayne to discuss your child’s participation this year. Ash Wednesday Liturgy This will be held at 11.00am in the school Hall on Ash Wednesday, 1 March. Parents are welcome to attend. Enjoy the long weekend! May God bless you Mrs Angela Hegney Principal
Upcoming dates:

Gospel Reading
Matthew 6:1-6,16-18
Jesus teaches that almsgiving, prayer, and fasting should be done in secret.
The season of Lent presents families with an opportunity to examine our family life and to re-commit ourselves to
the Christian practices of almsgiving, prayer, and fasting. Each of us is invited to do these things as individuals, but
we can also do one or more actions as a family.
Ash Wednesday is a good time for families to pray together and to plan the family's Lenten practices.
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, a day on which Catholics
traditionally resist eating between meals (fasting) and avoid
eating meat (abstaining). Many Catholics also attend Mass or
have special prayer liturgies.
Lent is a forty day period preparation for Easter. It reminds us of the
forty-days that Jesus spent in the wilderness before he took up his
ministry. During this time he fasted and prayed. Lent is a time of
self-denial and prayer for us as well. During this period, we are called
to focus on becoming closer to Jesus by praying a little more, doing
good deeds for others, going without something we like and giving
generously to others in need. Ash Wednesday is a good time for us to
think about what we can do to grow closer to Jesus over the Lenten
period. Fasting: Fasting is about more than avoiding
certain indulgent foods, like chocolate or ice-
cream.
Eating is just one of many activities in which we
are prone to over- indulge. Try these ideas to
increase the impact of your fasting:
Take half serves- for one day, let hunger really bite;
pray for those for whom hunger is constant
Give up gossip- let the bad news stop at you
Quit blaming others- practise acceptance and
responsibility
Religious Education News
It has been a busy fortnight in Pre Primary! We have been
busy learning new sounds and learning how to write our
names correctly.
We have been having fun learning different fine motor
activities and we are becoming very clever at threading and
picking up objects with pegs. In maths we have been
measuring different objects, and matching numbers to ten.
We have also been creating pictures by cutting out shapes
and gluing them together. It is very tricky to keep track of all
our shapes as we are cutting them out!
Year 4. In Mathematics we have been reinforcing our knowledge of place value and continue to improve in our multiplication skills. Some lucky people have also earned their first belts in our "Multiplication Karate" challenge! In English we have practised all of the roles we will need to complete our "Reading Circles" and we are all well into our class novels. Last Thursday we completed our "Egg Drop Challenge" in Technology and Enterprise. The students designed and constructed a contraption to house their egg for the drop. They evaluated the materials that they used and looked at designs that best met the challenge. It was pleasing to see so many eggs survive!
The Year 2's have begun to create books on the iPads. We have been learning how to add and change text, and also how to create and add drawings. We have been learning how to write a narrative, and have written some interesting and quite funny stories about monster parties, rainbow adventures, and flying up in the sky by a string of balloons!
We have been really busy in Year 5! We had a really good session about using 'punchy' verbs in our writing. We read a mentor text about Jackie Robins first and we were able to identify verbs that added more meaning to the story. Then we had a go at writing introductions for narratives with great verbs and wow!! What a difference! In Maths we are revising subtraction with regrouping and how to solve word problems. The second edition of the Godwin Gazette will be published this weekend!
The Year One class have enjoyed participating in the cricket clinic over the last two Thursday. In Mathematics, we continue to practice skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. We have also been looking at two dimensional shapes and have been on 'shape hunts' in the classroom and school grounds. In Religion, we have been expressing ways that followers of Jesus can care for others. Students made a clay model to represent themselves helping someone at home, at school or in the community. In Literacy we have been focusing on our Narrative writing and have used a story map to help us to include the features required. We are looking forward to writing our stories next week.
Kindy. In our class we are exploring the concept that as humans ‘we are all the same but we are all different’. We have looked at different body features and discussed our interests and likes. We are learning to draw people and include all the main body parts. We are discovering so much about each other and making life-long friends.
In Year 3 we have been learning about the properties of 3-D shapes. We have been learning how to identify and draw lines of symmetry. Come and check out our line of symmetry self-portraits. We are becoming experts in common and proper nouns and we must remind ourselves when to use capital letters. We are learning about the great ways Jesus used his body to help others and to show God's love.
CLASS NEWS
Last Wednesday the Year 6’s had a cricket clinic where the girls won the competition. In T & E we are building earthquake proof buildings for a model town. On Thursday our class did a maths test on fractions. In History, with Mrs Maslin, we’ve been looking at key figures in federation like Sir Henry Parkes and Sir John Quick.
SECOND HAND
UNIFORMS If you are buying and selling
second hand uniforms with other
parents, please arrange your own
drop off and collection of the
items and money.
The office has had an influx of
parents dropping garments and/
or money in to be passed on.
This is not the role of the office
administration staff.
I thank you for your co-operation
on this.
Hair with Heart Past OLOL student Madeleine Congdon (now Yr 11 BCC), has been growing her hair for a long time. This Friday at BCC she is cutting off her long ponytail and donating it to Variety - the Children's Charity to be made into a wig. As you are aware there are so many children affected by cancer and other diseases like alopecia, that result in hair loss. It can cost up to $6000 to provide a wig for a child, so Maddy is also fundraising towards this cause. If you would like to donate she has a fund-raising page with everday hero or you can follow the link bit.ly/cut4cancer
SHORTS IN STOCK!
Size 6 sports shorts are now
back in stock in the
uniform shop.
Orders can be placed in the office and
will be filled on Thursday Morning.
Invitation
The Dardanup Bull and Barrel Festival Committee invites you to our AGM on Wednesday 8 March, 7.30pm at the Wells Recreation Park Clubrooms.
If you want to meet people and make new friends. If you want to help organise the 15th Festival on the 7 October.
If you want to share your ideas for Festival activities. Then come along on the 8th - you’d be most welcome. Supper provided. Any enquires to Leanne 9728 1121
PARKING GUIDELINES In Car Pick Up - Afternoon
In car pick up has already commenced. I urge people to consider using this system to relieve parking congestion and improve safety. Could everyone wanting to use this system, please register for 2017 (even if previously registered) so that we have an accurate list of participants. Some information to assist parents:
Registered students do not have to use the system on all registered days. However, it is really important that the students know which
days they are using this support. Please write if you are/are not using the system in your child’s diary.
Please do not come early and park in the line. This disrupts the flow, particularly if your children are not organised. The students will
not be available for collection until approximately 3.05pm, so please spread arrival times between 3.05pm and 3.20pm. If students are still in line after 3.20pm, we will move them over to the covered area for parents to collect as staff have meetings after school.
Cars are to drive through the Church car park to the back of the Church, turn right behind the Church, drive between the presbytery and
the Church, and then turn left into the pick-up zone. This is really important to avoid cars backing up onto Ferguson Road.
Please make sure all car seats, etc., are organised prior to entry into the queue so the pick-up is efficient.
Please display the laminated family name sign we have given you. This helps staff recognise the cars to get the children ready.
See over the page for map.
Kiss & Drop – Morning
You can ‘Kiss & Drop’ your children from 8.30 each morning. The location is the same as the afternoon in car pick up. This system helps ease congestion in the main car park.
Please note the staff member on duty is in the school playground.
Please ensure your children walk into the school by using the footpath in front of the Prayer house, not through the car park.
Car Park Safety
Please do not park on the brick paved island at the entry to the car park, or on the roadside immediately beside the exits. This cuts down visibility for those turning out of the car park.
Children should not enter the car park unless they have a parent with them.
If the parent car park is full (especially on Assembly days) please consider parking in the Church car park area to the west of the Church and walk across to the school.
Arrival At School
We have a teacher on duty to supervise the children from 8.30am. Students should not arrive before this time unless a prior arrangement has been made with the office.
