TheOBLs meteringpumps MB/MC seriesare controlled-volumereciprocating pumps. The crank gear is drivenby an electric motorand the strokes per
minute of the diaphragmare given by anintegral, oil-splash-lubri-cated , endlessscrew/wormwheelreduction gear(fig.1).
In MB/MCs mechanicaldiaphragm meteringpumps, suction stage(diaphragm backwardstroke) is by springreturn.
TheMB/MCseries mete-ring pumps are characterised by a so called mechanical diaph-ragm, where the reciprocating movement is transmitted directly bythe crank gear.
The mechanical diaphragm works, both giving the swept volume, acting basically as plunger, and as separator between crank gearand the handled fluid.
TheMB/MCmechanical diaphragm metering pumps give a dou-ble advantage:
- Leak-free head;
- No plunger packing andrelating wearing pro-blems.These results are reachedthanks to the peculiarstructure of the diaphragm(patented), which bearsthe whole thrust of the
handled liquid, and, likea plunger pump, guaran-tees a linear flow rate(tableA).
Descrizione della pompa Description of the pump
Fig. 1
The reciprocating motion of the diaphragm determines the flowthanks to the inlet and outlet check valves of the pump head
(fig. 2).
During the suction stage the inlet valve opens because of thedepression created by the diaphragm while the outlet valveremains closed. The product enters the pump head and goes outthrought the outlet valve when pushed by the diaphragm duringthe discharge stage.

Theoretical flow rate
The theoretical flow rate corre-sponds exactly to the volumedisplaced by the diaphragm duringits motion. Its graphic representa-tion is a diagonal straight linewhose progression is determinedby the diaphragm stroke increasing(fig.3).
Actual flow rate
The actual flow rate is inevitably lessthan the theoretical flow rate becauseof the losses due to the reaction timeof the valves. The ratio betweenthese two flow rates determines thevolumetric efficiency of the pump. The efficiency depends on pumpsize, pump head type (plunger or
diaphragm), liquid to be pumped, viscosity of the liquid, working pressu-re, etc. (fig. 4)
Portata teorica

Altezza max 1,5 metri Lunghezza totale (Verticale pi
orizzontale) 2,5 metri.
A proper installation and sizing of the suction line are of particular impor-tance for a correct operation of the pump. The following factors shall be taken into account:
A) Pipe inner diameterThe pipe inner diameter will be chosen asa function of the pump flow rate(see tableC).The pump connections are oversized, inorder to cover all applications.
B) Length of piping
Suction piping is to be as short as possi-ble.Following the indications of tableCit issuggested:
Max suction lift 1,5 metres Total length 2,5 metres
(upright plus horizontal)
C) Arrangement of the suction lineFor the arrangement of the suction line see fig.7.
Provide with adequate clearance areas and safe access foroperation and maintenance, in particularin front of the hydraulic side and of theadjustment knob (fig. 6).
If the pump is installed outdoors, a shel-ter is recommended, specially when thepump is equipped with electric actuatorsor other delicate devices.
PP pump heads can work properly onlyat ambient temperature and metered liq-uid temperatures below 40C. If neces-sary, provide suitable protection from sun
rays and check the temperature of the metered liquid.

Filtro in aspirazione
The installation of a filter on the suction side is always advisable, particularly when the liquid to be metered contains suspended par-ticles.
Caution:
A small-sized filter will affect the meteringperformances.UseY- filters with a size larger than thesuction connection.
The characteristics of the filter net depend on the kind of liquid andpump flow rate.
For liquids with viscosity not exceeding 200 cps see tableD.
To prevent sucking of impurities, specially when liquids withsuspended matters are metered, the suction pipe shall not drawthe liquid from the bottom of the tank. The suction point should be10 cm from the tank bottom (fig.8).

Specific technical information is required for the installation ofpumps intended for metering viscous liquids.
For this kind of application we recommend stainless steel pump-heads.Spring-loaded discharge valves are also recommended in theevent of high-viscosity liquids.
The suction piping must have an adequate diameter; as a rule, for high-viscosity liquids (2000 cps), select the size immediatelyabove the diameter of the pump suction connections.
In any case, when viscous liquids are to be metered choose for
the pipe at least the same size as that of the pump connections.

Tubazione di mandata
When the free surface of the liquid in the suction side tank isabove discharge-side tank level, an uncontrollable flow from thesuction side tank to the discharge side tank will occur.
To prevent this natural passage of liquid, the discharge pressuremust always be at least 0,3 Kg/cmq, higher than the suctionpressure, in case of small flow rates 0,5 Kg/cmq
If for any reason this condition cannot be complied with the plant itis necessary to create a backpressure by means of a suitablevalve, or better to highten the discharge pipe so as to prevent thesiphoning effect (fig. 10).
Discharge line

Mechanical diaphragm metering pumps absolutely need theinstallation of a relief valve; a pressure higher than the ratingplate value would break the mechanism.
The safety valve has to be installed immediately after the dis-charge connection, anyhow before the on-off valve.
The relief valve setting (set pressure) must not exceed the pumpmax. pressure value.
Relief valve

The relief valve protects the pump against:
Excessive pressure(pressure higher thanrated value).
Operator mistakes(i.e., on-off valveclosed on the discharge line when thepump is running).
Obstruction of the discharge piping
(reduction in section, clogging).
A relief valve is absolutely necessary whenan on-off valve is fitted on the dischargeline (fig.11).
Anyway, the installation of a safety valveis always essential both because of theabove reasons and for the safety regula-tion for accident at work.

The pulsation damper is decisive for a proper operation of themetering pumps. The installation of a pulsation damper offers several advantagesbecause this device: Protetects the metering pump against pressure peaks, thusincreasing the working of life of the pump.
Prevents vibrations along the discharge line.
Smooth the flow, useful for the process.
Pulsating flows, which are negative characteristic of all meteringpumps, can therefore be prevented by installing a pulsationdamper on the discharge line (fig.12).
Examples of installation of the pulsation damper

Polmone a sacca
Bottle damper
Is made up of a cylindrical-shape barrel developed in its height.
Damper volume: about 35 times the pump swept volume.
Advantages: It does not need precharge because is self-running.
Disadvantages: It has to be regenerated periodically by releasing the liquid through thedrain valve in order to restore the air absorbed by the liquid.
Bladder type damper
The liquid is separed from the relieving chamber by a diaphragm.
Damper volume: about 8 times the pump swept volume .
Advantages: Small volume. No need for periodic inflation because the gas is contained in the bladder.
Disadvantages:
It is necessary to know prior the working pressure in order to determinethe damper precharge.
In order to check if the metering pumpoperates correctly, it is essential to install apressure gauge on the discharge line.(fig.13).
The pressure gauge shows the actual work-ing pressure of the metering pump. Thisvalue must not exceed the max. pressure ofthe pump.

Before the startup verify the following conditions:
Make sure that the baseplate is stable and even. Do not installthe pump directly on a concrete foundation.
Fix the pump to the baseplate using the specific anchor holes in
the pump feet.
Make sure that the pump valve axis is perfectly upright.
Before connecting the piping to the pump, it is absolutely neces-sary to flush the pipelines with water, especially the suction lineand relevant feed tank.
This preliminary flushing is often underestimated by the instal-lator; if this operation is not properly carried out, the pump willbecome a collector of all foreing matters contained in thepipeline and tank, such as weld drops, gasket scraps, soil and
other stuff.
The pipelines must be independently supported, so as to pre-vent stresses on the pumphead. Therefore, besides the baseplate, the pump needs a supporting framework for both suction and dis-charge pipelines.
Make sure that the pipeline fittings and flanges are perfectlytight and in particular that no air enters the suction line, as thiswould hinder the priming of the pump.
Act as follows:
With pump not running, check the oil through the oil window (foroil type see tableF).
Check the electric connections and also the direction of rotationof the motor (shown by the arrow on motor body).
Make sure that all on-off valves on the suction and dischargepipelines are open.
Make sure that the liquid to be metered has not solidified orfrozen inside the piping.
Carry out the first startup with discharge pressure as low as pos-sible and with adjustment knob set to 20%; keep these conditionsabout 3 5 minutes. Increase gradually the flow rate up to themaximum value, then set the pump to the required working condi-tions (flow rate and pressure).
During the first stage check the pump discharge pressure by means ofthe pressure gauge: the pressure value (max. oscillation of the pointer)must not exceed the max. pressure indicated on the pump rating plate.

Attenzione !

Afls trykket p manometeret.
ADVARSEL:Driftstrykket m ikke overstige vrdien, derer angivet p identifikationspladen. For hjt
tryk beskadiger pumpen.
- I de frste 3 driftstimer kontrolleres pum-pens temperatur (maks. 40 C) og motorenstemperatur (maks. 80 C).
