CHANGING LOCATIONTo leave a location, you will need to find and click on an exit hotspot – usually a door. Move the mouse pointer over that exit and if it changes to an animating pointing finger then click the left mouse button. The character will walk to and leave through the exit.

EXAMINING THINGSIt is important to examine things in the environment. To do this, move the mouse pointer over the hotspot and, when an action cursor appears, press the right mouse button (rather than the left mouse button which generally instigates an action). Clicking the right mouse button will give a voice-over description of that hotspot.

If the action cursor is a blinking eye, then ‘examine’ is the only option available for that hotspot, however you can still try using an inventory item on it (see Inventory section below).

COLLECTING OBJECTSNico and George collect some truly bizarre objects as they progress – you will soon discover that almost anything can have a use. If you see an item you think could be useful, move the mouse pointer over it. If it can be picked up then the pointer will change to a cursor of a grasping hand. Click on the item to pick it up and it will go into your ‘inventory’. Note that some objects may require precise timing to swipe them - particularly if they’re right under the nose of unhelpful people.

INTERACTING WITH THE ENVIRONMENTA set of turning cogs indicates that George or Nico can interact with that background object. This could result in anything from pressing a button or opening a hatch to pushing a shopping trolley or stroking a goat.

GAME CONTROLSAdventure games offer investigation and exploration – and this requires you to discover and interact with objects and people of interest. To do this, move your mouse pointer around the screen. As it passes over something of interest (we call these ‘hotspots’), the mouse pointer graphic will change to an action cursor to show the type of action you can perform.

The purpose of some hotspots may not be immediately obvious, but don’t worry, think logically and all will become clear. The game will not let you progress from a section until you have achieved everything that needs to be done there, so you’re not going to miss anything.

MOVING AROUNDTo move George or Nico around, simply move your mouse pointer to the point you want them to walk to, and click the left mouse button. If they can’t exactly walk to that point, then they will get as close as possible – so don’t worry about being too precise.

Some areas are larger than the screen you are playing on. In these cases, as your character walks towards the edge of the screen, the camera will pan to reveal more of the location.

THE INVENTORYThe inventory is a visual display of the all items that your character is carrying. It can be viewed by clicking on the bag icon at the bottom of the screen. This opens a window that shows everything in George or Nico’s possession. To exit the inventory and return to the game, simply click anywhere outside the inventory area.

Items in the inventory can be examined by moving the mouse pointer over them – when the pointer turns into a cross-hair cursor click the Right Mouse Button.

You may want to use inventory items on hotspots in the world, or give or show them to other characters. To do this, open the inventory and then click on the item you want to use. Move the item out of the inventory: after a moment the rest of the inventory will fade away. Now, move the item over the background object or person. When the pointer turns into an action cursor, click again and see what happens.

Some inventory items can be combined with each other to form a new item. To do this, select one inventory item - any item with which it can be combined will stay solid, the rest will grey out (unless you have disabled ‘hints’). Move the selected item over another item that has remained solid (if there are any) and click again to combine.

CONVERSATIONDuring your adventure, you will encounter many characters – some helpful, some indifferent, and a few downright dangerous. To start a conversation, move the mouse pointer over the person. Click when the pointer changes to a mouth cursor. Some characters may not want to talk to you immediately. If they do, a window will appear offering icons representing conversation subjects, and below these smaller icons representing objects in your inventory, which you can show to the person with whom you are in conversation.

Once a subject has been exhausted, the icon will be greyed out or removed – but if the icon remains in the topic bar, then there’s still more to be discussed about it. Likewise, an inventory object can continue to be talked about until its icon is greyed out.

The range of possible subjects will be dictated by knowledge already gained from chatting to other characters, witnessing other events, or visiting certain locations. Once you’ve discovered more, having another chat with a character may provide new things to talk about.

To end a conversation, tap on the red arrow icon. Note that sometime this icon may not be available until a particular conversation has been finished.

INSPECT AN AREAAn animating magnifying glass cursor shows that you have the opportunity to get a close-up view of an area of particular interest. It is always worth investigating further.

USING THE MAP SCREENSAs you progress, your character will be offered a choice of locations to visit. On leaving some areas, a map will be displayed with available locations highlighted with red pins. To select a location, click on the pin that marks the location that you want to go to.

MAKING PHONE CALLSThrough careful and painstaking investigation, you will accumulate a selection of phone numbers. Open your inventory and left mouse click on your cellphone and you will be offered a list of numbers to call.

CLOSE-UP PUZZLESSometimes you will need to solve a puzzle in a close-up view. Each of these puzzles has it’s own unique controls which are explained the first time you encounter each one.
