    Introduction

Welcome To PODxt Live...Thank you or inviting PODxt Live into your lie. Whether you use your PODxt Live asthe ultimate multi-eect pedal, a direct recording miracle, a powerhouse preamp, a prac-tice partner, or as a creative digital signal processing tool (and heck, why should it be justone o these?) we think youll agree that PODxt Live is about the most amazing thingto happen to the electric guitar since, well, since the guitar amplier itsel! PODxt Livedelivers the incredible tones o the acclaimed Line 6 Point-to-Point Interactive model-ing technology (as eatured in our Vetta series amps) and uses it with the wonderullyportable and easy to use POD, which has been the guitar recording world standard oryears. So youve got the tonal heritage o the past century o guitar amplier and stompbox design, plus no-compromise recording and direct sound excellence all ready toroll when you are.

Who is Line 6?As you may know, Line 6 rst came on the scene several years back with a new kindo guitar amplier the rst to put digital sotware modeling technology to work in acombo amp or guitarists. We also knew then that guitarists need great amp tone whenrecording, but generally dont have the room to crank up that classic stack, or the moneyto hire a team o ace engineers to get it to tape. So we squashed our patented model-

ing technology down into a small, kidney-bean-shaped wonder called POD, and oreverchanged the world o guitar recording.

Once wed gotten this whole modeling amp and POD thing started, it was time to seewhat we could do i we really cranked up the horsepower and took our modeling to thenext level. I mean, once youve climbed to the top o the mountain, its on to the nextmountain, right? So, eyes glowing like power tubes, we stocked up on the Pepsi, gatheredour genius engineers into a secret lab, red up our extensive collection o ampliers and

stomp boxes... and spirited their treasured tones into a newly-supercharged modelingtechnology we dubbed Point-to-Point modeling. It rst hit the streets in the award-win-ning Vetta amp, whose superb tone and unparalleled selection o dream amps, cabinetsand eects make it a pretty good contender or the world heavyweight amp title. Aterthat, we poured the same magic elixir into the classic POD andta-dah!PODxt Livewas born. Its now available in the original bean shape, a rack mount, and the foor unitthat you are enjoying.

    14/146

    Quick Start Guide

    14

How does PODxt Live help you create a guitar tone that is out o this world, and thenget that tone wherever you need it? Easy! Its

ModelingModeling: just what is it, and why is it so important?

To answer that question, well start with tubes (better know as valves to our riends inEngland and elsewhere). Tubes, we can all agree, are the heart and soul o pretty much

every legendary guitar amp, and are key to the warm, harmonic-rich tone quality othose amps. Solid state devices (transistors) are simply unable to duplicate tube warmthand perormance. And hybrids a tube in a circuit along with a bunch o transistors are really a vain attempt at warming up a transistor-based tone. They all short in anycomparison to a 100% tube circuit. So thats it tubes or nothin, right? Well, not anymore....

You see, Line 6s team o crack engineer-guitarists has spent years understanding pretty

much everything there is to know about tube-powered gear, including exactly how di-erent types o tubes respond under various conditions typical o guitar amplier design. How tubes process an input signal, how the signal is colored and shaped, at what point itbegins to distort, the quality and characteristic o the distortion, what happens when thesignal gets to other parts o the system complicated stu, but all analyzable as elec-tronic data. A guitar pickup output, ater all, is an electronic signal, and tubes and all therest are really just a complex orm o signal processing.

Having sussed it all out, the Line 6 engineers translated all this arcane knowledge intosotware that simulates the signal processing o guitar amps tubes and other electronics, entirely within the digital domain. Cool, huh? The Line 6 crew also directed their ca-eine-enhanced modeling attention to a study o guitar speaker cabinets and the impor-tant part they play in communicating great guitar tone. And the great variety o stompbox and rack eects that guitarists use to juice things up. They translated it all intoyet more powerul sotware, and its this revolutionary DSP (Digital Signal Processing)

sotware-based modeling technology that gives Line 6 the power to create super silicon-based lie orms like PODxt Live.

These models were tweaked through careul, scientic A/B comparisons to thegear that inspired them, with an ear open or the eects o dierent volume levels andsettings o the originals tone and gain controls. The gain and equalization characteris-tics o the modeled gear were careully measured so that changes to knobs on the modelswould mirror the eects o these changes on the originals as closely as possible. Weretalkin major attention to detail here. Tone control center requencies, slopes, and cut/boost range were painstakingly analyzed, in addition to a whole host o actors unique

to each piece o gear. Not only that, but since many classic amps and eects have highlyinteractive circuits, we paid careul attention to the way that the setting o one knobchanges the way that another knob may behave. All in an eort to make our Models asmuch like the amps, cabs and eects in our collection as possible. The resulting Amp,Cab and Eect Models are the oundation oPODxt Live.

Now, then here are a couple o things we want to be completely crystal clear on:

    1. The Line 6 modeling process is a patented, 100% digital sot-ware-based technology exclusive to Line 6.

    2. Line 6 Modeling is not sampling, nor is it solid state; no special

guitar, pickup, or cabling is needed.

Theres Magic in the A.I.R.For recording and direct eed to a mixer, PA system or headphones, PODxt Live deliversits modeling tones through another innovation: Line 6s A.I.R. direct recording out-put. The A.I.R. (acoustically ntegrated recording) technology is the result o intensiveresearch and careul study o the tonal characteristics produced by the interaction oampliers, cabinets, speakers, microphones and the recording room during the recordingprocess.

The direct output o many preamps, ampliers and direct box-style amp replacementsavailable today oer some limited orm o cabinet simulation or speaker emulation. Those that happen to be more than simple high end roll-os have little or no controloptions. Generic cabinet simulations cannot reproduce the markedly dierent tonesresulting rom the choice o speakers, wood, and other details o a great real-lie speakercabinet. Other equipment also ails to reproduce the signicant tonal contribution o

microphone selection and placement, and do nothing to reproduce the subtle ambienceo the recording space.

The result is the amiliar dissatisaction with direct recording products even thosethat deliver a reasonably usable basic tone ail to reproduce the lie o the guitar sound, and destroy the proper eel in the process. It is as i your guitar strings became heavierand less responsive, like they just went up a couple o gauges when you plugged into yourdirect box. And your sound lost its lie.

PODxt Lives combination o Amp Models and A.I.R. technology provides superiordirect tones by recreating all the elements contributing to a great recorded guitar sound, and giving you that tone with the same eel as playing through a real amp and speakercabinet:

The eect o the guitar amplier circuit is emulated by the Amp Model you choose. Each model was developed rom extensive study o a classic amplier treasured as atone classic.

In a guitar amp, once the guitar signal passes through the electronics, it is outputto one or more speakers in a speaker cabinet. The specic design o the speakers, howmany there are, and how they are arranged contributes signicantly to your guitartone, as does the construction and resulting tone o the wood box itsel. A Marshallhead driving a single 12-inch speaker in an open-back cabinet, or instance, will sounddramatically dierent rom the same head driving a 4x12 closed-back cabinet. Line 6has careully constructed virtual sotware speaker cabinets that emulate the contribu-tion made by real speaker cabinets to get great guitar sound.

Once the sound makes it out o the speaker cabinet, the next important link in therecording system is the microphone that receives that sound. Guitar recordists selectdierent microphones, and arrange them in dierent placements, to get particularsounds. A microphone pointing directly into the cone o a speaker will hear somethingdierent than one positioned o-axis. Line 6 careully analyzed the coloring that vari-ous microphones add to the guitar sound, as well as the eects o dierent mic place-

ment techniques, and gave you control o these details in your PODxt Live.

The guitar amp, cabinet, and microphone dont just sit in empty space. The roomthat they are in contributes importantly to the guitar sound you will record. Reverbcan be used to capture the basic character o the space, simulating the eect o thesound refecting o the rooms walls, foors and ceiling. But there are other subtledetails that have more to do with the spread o the sound as it passes through the air

between the speaker and microphone. This nal component is the key to the sensethat the listener is in one position in the room, and the guitar sound is in anotherposition, and that the two are separated by a mass o air that sound spreads through to

    reach the listener.

All o these important sound-shaping components are accounted or in your PODxtLive. Turn the Amp Model knob to call up the amplier emulation you want. PODxtLive automatically matches that amplier with an appropriate cabinet and microphonesetup, and gives you the sound o that setup coming through the air o a recording space.Turn the reverb knob to taste, and start recording incredible micd up sound. Press a but-ton and twiddle a knob or two, and you can switch cabinets, change out mics and theirplacement, and adjust the spread o the sound in your virtual room as well.

The A.I.R. direct recording output is exclusive to Line 6. In combination with the Line6 Amp, Cab and Eect Models, it is the key to PODxt Lives phenomenally satisyingdirect recording sound.

5 Phones - Plug your headphones in here or silent concertos. The volume is set

knob. Any time you use headphones, it important to be suretheyre not set or ridiculous volume beore your slap them on your ears. Try an Outputknob setting o about 10 oclock when rst putting the headphones on, them turn uprom there i you need more volume.

So that you hear appropriate sound through the headphones, PODxt Live automati-cally switches to Studio Mode whenever headphones are connected (or more on StudioMode, see What are you connecting to? on page 37).

A quick note about headphones: Earbuds and headphones designed or use with portableMP3 players and tape players are very low impedance as well as not very accurate inrequency response. This makes them not suitable or use with PODxt Live. We recom-mend a pair o 150-600 ohm pro or semi-pro level studio headphones or best results.

6 Output to Amp/Line- The unbalanced 1/4-inch connectors here get yourPODxt Live

s sound to a guitar amplier, recorder, mixer or PA system. Flick the rearpanel switch toampwhen youve got your PODxt Live eeding into the ront o a guitaramp, and otherwise choose Line. The rear panel LeveL knob sets the you guessed it! output level. Changing the Outputlevel does not change your tone, so you can getthe tone you want at any volume level. This setting is not saved when you store settingsinto one o the PODxt Lives memory locations.

When running into a guitar amp, youll want to avoid setting the LeveL knob so high that

youre overdriving the ront end o your amp. Try turning any drive-type control on youramp low so that its not adding more dirt to your sound, and compare the PODxt Livesound on headphones to the sound coming rom your amp to be sure the sound rom theamp isnt getting too crunchy because youre eeding it too much level rom the PODxt.The tone rom the headphones and rom the amp will o course sound dierent, depend-ing on the color that your amp adds. You just want to make sure that youre not gettingextra distortion degrading your sound and preventing you rom achieving the tones you

    want with your PODxt-Live-and-amp-setup.

When running into line level gear (like recorders, mixers and PAs) PODxt Live will give

the best signal-to-noise perormance when you have the Outputcontrol at max. Withthe Outputcontrol turned down low, you may get extra hisswhich obviously aintwhat you wanti you turn up your mixer or recorders output to compensate. In orderto allow you to set the Outputas high as possible when connecting to recording, mixing, and other studio gear, be sure you are plugging PODxt Lives outputs into line level, not microphone or guitar level inputs. Line level inputs should allow you to set PODxtLives amp/line switch to Line, then turn PODxts Outputup all the way (or close to it)and thereby get the best sound possible. I your gear has inputs that unction as mic/linelevel inputs, try to set the trim or those inputs to the minimum level, and PODxts Out-putto maximum, when setting levels.

7 Aux Input - Connect a CD player, MP3 player, drum machine or other devicehere, and youll hear it at PODxt Lives headphone and Amp/Line outputs. Very handyor jamming along! Use the output volume control on the connected device to set itslevel. Ths aux nput sgnal wll NOT be ed to the USB dgtal audo output.

8 Input - Plug your guitar in here. (You techies will want to know this is a mono,un-balanced connection.) Set the switch to norm or use with most guitars. The padposition may work better with guitar pickups that have particularly high output levels,to prevent them rom overdriving the ront end o your PODxt Live in an unpleasant-sounding way.

    9

Pedal -Connect a standard expression pedal, such as the Line 6 EX-1, and youll

be able to assign it to control the Volume Pedal or Eect Tweak 12 unctions. See page49 or the detail on that.

10 Select - The PODxt Live has 128 Channel Memories. They are arranged in 32banks o our channels each. (The our are called A, B, C, and D.) You can think o eachbank as a sort o virtual our-channel guitar amp.

The rst 32 Channel Memories (Banks 1-8) store a variety o complete amp-and-eectselections pre-programmed by the tone mavens at Line 6 to sound great when eeding arecorder, mixer, PA or headphones. The second 32 (Banks 9-16) are designed to run inront o a guitar amp. The next 16 (Banks 17-20) are specically set up to use with theLine 6 Variax modeling guitar, which ully integrates with the PODxt Live (see the sec-tion on using with a Variax in Chapter 3 or more detail). The last 48 (Banks 21-32) arelet or your own creations or you can load them up with one o the thousands o great

tones youll nd at customtone.com or transer to your PODxt Live using the Line 6Edit or GuitarPort sotware that you can download or ree rom the Line 6 web site.

You load PODxt Live channels by turning the seLectknob (or stepping on the Bankup/dOwn anda, B, c, d switches described later in this chapter). Note: When recallinga channel, you may have let the physical Bass knob at minimum, whereas the just-re-called channel has this control set to max. To change Bass (or anything else), just grabthe knob you want and tweak.

To leave the Channel Memory world and enter Manual operation, step on thea, B, cor d ootswitch 21 and hold it or 2 seconds. In this mode, PODxt Lives display will

show Manual Mode in place o the Channel Memory name, and the physical positionso theamptOne cOntROLs13 and channeL vOLume14 knobs will determine yoursound.

When the edit, save or OutputmOde/system button is lit, the seLectknob selects romthe available display pages. When you press edit, it selects pages o amp, eect and chan-nel parameters; when you press OutputmOde/system, it takes you through all o the

Tuner and system-wide settings. When save is lit, youll nd amp and eect customiza-tion eatures as well as MIDI dump operations. The vertical scroll bar on the let sideo each display page shows you where you are in that group o pages..

11 Displays - The let o these displays always shows the bank number and chan-nel letter o the currently selected Channel Memory. The right o these displays, PODxtLives LCD (lqud crystal dsplay), is your window into every parameter and setting avail-able. Heres how to get around that right display:

    1. When the save, editand OutputmOde/system buttons are NOT lit, the displayshows you the name o the selected Channel Memory, and the Amp Model thatit uses. (And lets you use the Sot Buttons as described in 17 .)

    2. When the save, editor OutputmOde/system button IS lit, a scroll bar on thelet side o PODxts display shows you where you are in the available displaypages. Press one o these buttons to see the scroll bar now. For those that reallyneed to get all the nerdy details, each dot in that bar represents a page. As youturn the seLectknob, you move through the pages and so does the little square. When youre on the rst page, the little square is at the top. When you get to thelast page, the squares at the bottom. Square goes up, square goes down. Squaregoes up, square goes down. Fun or the whole amily!

    3. Each page typically has words that appear in the bottom o the display. Thesewords label things you can adjust. Press the button below the thing you want to

adjust, then turn the Eect Tweak knob to do your adjusting. Heres more detail

12 Eect Tweak - When the Edit, Output Mode/System, and Save buttonsARENT lit, this knob varies some aspect o the sound the PODxt Live is currently run-ning. Turn it up and the eect will generally go deeper, louder, aster, longer or just plainmore. Youll know what youre tweakin because a window will pop up on PODxt Livesdisplay to show you. (i youre looking or the way to set the delay time, note that this

is usually set by the tapbutton). For the inside scoop, including how you can customizethe effecttweakknob see Chapter 4, Creating & Storing Sounds. I the eect thateffecttweakis targeting is o, then, big surprise, effecttweakwont change anything.

While the editor tune/system button is lit, the effecttweakknob adjusts parametervalues instead o tweaking your eect.

13Amp Tone Controls -dRive, Bass, middLe, tReBLe, pResence. These controlthe tone o the Amp Modeling that you have selected. (Theampootswitch determines

whether the Amp Modeling is on or o; i its o, you o course wont hear any changesas you adjust these knobs.) The dRive knob controls how hard youre driving the input othe chosen Amp Model. Like the input volume control on a non-master volume guitaramp, higher settings give you more dirt. The exact response and interactivity o thisand the rest o the Amp Tone Controls will vary rom Amp Model to Amp Model, tomimic the tone controls o the original amp that inspired the Amp Model youve select-

ed. See Chapter 5 or details on specic Amp Models..

14 Chan Vol - This knob controls the relative volume level o the channel youare playing through thus, channeL vOLume. Use this to balance levels between thesounds you store in two dierent PODxt Live Channel Memories (say between yourrhythm and lead tones). In general, you want to set the chan vOL as high as possible toinsure youre getting the best signal-to-noise ratio perormance but back o on this

control i youre seeing CLIP in PODxt Lives display.

TIP: You probably want to have all of your favorite sounds as loud as possible, while also having the right difference in volume between your lead and rhythmsounds, clean and dirty sounds, etc. Right? OK, then, to get this happy balance, start with your favorite clean sounds. Turn up their Chan Vol as high as you canwithout getting the CLIP indicator in PODxt Lves display when you strum hard.

and save them that way. Then switch amongst them to see if some are too loud, and turn them down a bit to match well with the others. Next, move on to selectyour dirtier crunch and lead tones, comparing them to the clean sounds and

saving them with lower Chan Vol settings to match well with those clean sounds. Now, each time you use your PODxt Lve, you just have to set an Output volumelevel you like, and you can switch amongst your various sounds without unhappyvolume differences.

Another little Channel Volume detail: unlike theamptOne cOntROLs13 , this knobworks whether your Amp Model is on or o. PODxt Live actually stores two separateChannel Volume settings one or the Amp-on state 19 , and one or Amp-o. Soyou can balance the volume dierence between these two i needed, as well as balancethe volumes between any two Channel Memories regardless o whether they happen touse Amp Modeling or not.

15 Save - When you want to store your own tweaked-up sounds in your PODxt Livethis button is the key. Exactly how it works is detailed in Chapter 4, Creating & Stor-ing Sounds. But youre probably impatient, so here are the basics:

When using a pre-programmed sound, PODxt Live will display the bank number, chan-nel letter and channel name in its let display 11 . and the channel name at the top othe right display. I you turn one o the knobs or change a parameter in the editmodepages, youll notice an asterisk appears to the let o the bank number. This is a reminderto you that you have tweaked the memorized channel, and that you should save it i youwant your PODxt Live to remember the tweak.

To save the changes youve made to a Channel Memory, press the save button. The but-ton will start to fash. Just press save again i you want to overwrite the currently loadedChannel, using the same name. Or, i youd like to change the name rst, use the middletwo Sot Buttons to select a character, then press the right sot button and turn theeffecttweakknob to change the character. Press the sot button under dest, turn theeffecttweakknob, and you will see that you are switching through memory locations A,B, C, and D in each o the sixteen numbered banks. Pick one to store your sound in, and

press that save button a second time. The buttons light will stop fashing, a progress barwill shown on the display, and the sound is stored at the location you chose, replacingthe sound that was there beore.

Ater the sound is stored, you can bring it back any old time by simply turning the seLectknob to call up the location where you stored it, or by dancing around on PODxt Livesootswitches to select the appropriate bank and channel.

choose a place to save to, and press save again.

I you decide you dont want to store the sound ater youve started saving, press anyother button to cancel the save. (The save will also be canceled i you dont touchanything or 15 seconds ater pressing save.) I you accidentally save over a actory soundyou liked, the save buttons additional pages let you recall the actory preset version o aChannel Memory any time. See Chapter 4 or details on this eature.

The save button also lets you customize any o the Amp Models and Eect Setups toyour own taste, so your avorite version o the amp or eect comes up instantly when youturnampmOdeLs or effects. See Chapter 4 or the details on that.

16 Edit - A deep-dive into tone central is available at the press o the editbutton. While editis lit, the seLectknob selects pages o everything that makes up a ChannelMemory. From here, you set all the eect parameters, select cabinets and microphones,

and assign a parameter to the effecttweakknob. To learn more about deep editing, please see Chapter 4.

17 Sot Buttons - These our buttons operate dierently depending on whatyoure doing.

I the editbutton is NOT lit, the PODxt Lives display will look about like this:

Press any one o the Sot Buttons below the display to turn the item above that buttonon or o. In the example above, the cOmp, amp, and gate processing are o, and theeQ is on. Double-press any o these Sot Buttons to show the settings or that item, then

press the lit editbutton to exit that display when youre done tweaking details.

I the editbutton IS lit, the Sot Buttons will let you select which displayed settingyoud like to tweak. See Chapter 4 or the detail on that.

There are also other pages here (selectable with the seLect10 knob) or adjusting theoperation o your PODxt Live. The settings made in these pages are NOT saved in indi-vidual Channel Memories. They aect the overall, general operation o the PODxt Live.

19 Amp, Stomp, Mod, Delay - These ootswitches show you which o theseblocks o sound processing is currently running. Light on means that item is active.Light o means its bypassed. Step on a switch to switch it on/o. Chapter 4 tells youabout editing the details o the Amp, Stomp, Mod and Delay. Chapter 5 tells you aboutthe individual Amp Models that PODxt Live gives you., while Chapter 6 tells you allabout the individual Stomp, Mod and Delay Models.

20Bank Up/Down - These ootswitches choose amongst the PODxt Lives 36banks o Channel Memories, similar to the Select 10 knob. Once youve ootswitchedyour way to a new bank, youll then also need to step on the A, B, C or D ootswitchto actually load one o the channels rom that bank. (We set things up this way so youraudience wont hear you switching through channels as you make your way to your nextbank o sounds.)

21 A, B, C, D - The lights on these ootswitches show you which o the Channelsin the current Bank is running. You can step on any o them to choose a dierent chan-nel basically the same thing you can do with the seLect10 knob. You can also stepon one o these switches and hold it or two seconds to activate a Manual Mode. In thismode, PODxt Lives display will show Manual Mode in place o the Channel Memoryname, and the physical positions o theamptOne cOntROLs13 and channeL vOLume14 knobs will determine your sound.

22 Tap (Hold/Tuner) -PODxt Live allows you to control the time and speed oyour eects by simply tapping on this button. To use the tapcontrol, just tap the buttonat the tempo you want and the eects that are set to lock to that tempo will change tomatch what you tapped. Theres also a Tempo parameter near the end o the editpages,so youll see exactly what Tempo youve Tapped. This is especially useul i you are tryingto nudge your tapsetting to just the right value. See Chapter 4 to learn how to set upeects to ollow the tempo that youve tapped.

But wait, thats not all. You can instead hold the switch or about 2 seconds and Shazam! Instant digital chromatic tuner. The idea o these Tone Correction controls is to adjust PODxt Lives overall soundto compensate or the tonal response o the preamp section o the amp that youreplugging into. Weve ound that it is oten necessary to reduce the low requency

Getting The Right Tone With An AmpThe rst thing to consider when running PODxt Live in ront o an amp is what youwant to achieve. I you want to use your amp or its tone, with PODxt Live supplyingeects and some extra distortion when needed, then youll generally get the best results

turning theamp19 modeling o and using a stOmp19 when you want to add distor-tion. The sounds that are pre-programmed in Banks 9-16 are set up this way, to comple-ment the tone provided by your amp. For this setup, youll want to plug right into your

amps ront panel guitar input, and be sure youve made the proper choice ocOmBOfROntor stack fROnton the What are you connecting to? system page (see page33).

On the other hand, i you want to use PODxt Lives Amp Modeling ability to transormthe basic tone o your amp to make it sound more like another amp, youll probably wanttheamp19 modeling on, as youll nd in the pre-programmed sounds in banks 1-8. Iyouve got an amp with eect send/return jacks, or a power amp input, we recommend

you rst try eeding your PODxt Lives input into them, bypassing your guitar ampsown preamp and its tone contribution. Then be sure youve made the proper choice ocOmBO pwRampor stack pwRampon the What are you connecting to? systempage (see page 33). I, instead, youre plugging right into the guitar input on the ronto your amp, try cOmBO fROntor stack fROntmode on the What are you con-necting to? system page.

Its also important to be realistic about what youre going to achieve here as goodas it is, PODxt Live wont be able to make a $100 combo amp with a cheap speakersound exactly like the vintage amp o your dreams. When youre plugging into the ronto an amp, its a good idea to start o with that amp in neutral. What is neutral, youask? Well, i you only have one volume control on your amp, set it low enough to get aclean tone; that ensures PODxt Lives sounds come through as purely as possible. Iyou have a master volume in addition to a volume control on the input, set them bothso that the rst volume doesnt overdrive the master volume (so youre getting a cleantone). This will vary rom amp to amp, but usually the input volume is going to be lessthan the master volume to get a clean, non-distorted sound. I you have passive tonecontrols, try setting your mid control at max, and your treble and bass controls at zero(this is actually fat equalization-wise on most amps). Active tone controls may vary, but just be sure youre not overdriving the amp so the PODxt Live tone comes throughwithout extra coloration. Once you get going, you can tweak the amplier settings to suityour tastes. Try to set PODxt Lives Outputso youre not overdriving the input o the

    amp.

Its just like youd expect dierentcombinations will produce a veritable east o tone! Some distortion boxes may soundoverly harsh i you max their output volume into your PODxt Live. Try lowering the dis-tortion boxs volume, and you can always add more gain with PODxt Lives dRive knobor its own stOmpeects. You can also try setting the rear panel input6 switch to the

The Ins and Outs o Great ToneI youre hooking your PODxt Live up to a recorder, mixer, or other equipment, be sureyou are plugging its outputs into line level inputs on your other gear, as opposed tomicrophone level or guitar level inputs. This will insure that you get the best signal-to-

noise ratio (lots o juicy guitar tone, not too much hiss) with PODxt Live. Some equip-ment only gives you a single input or both mic & line level sources, allowing you totrim low level signals (like mics) up to a high level at the inputs. I you are plugging yourPODxt Live into one o these inputs, try setting the trim to minimum, and twisting theOutput6 and channeL vOLume14knobs up to maximum. I your equipment has acouple o open line-level only inputs, youll probably get better perormance by plugginginto these, rather than the wide-ranging mic-to-line level trimmed inputs.

    Re-Amping

What is Re-Amping?For years, creative recording engineers have used what they call re-amping to add awhole other layer o creativity to the recording experience (some would say that its a

whole other layer o complexity, but we wont get into that particular argument here). What re-amping consists o, in the old-school way, is using a splitter/direct box to eedthe guitar to both an amp (or monitoring and recording one track) and straight to theboard (or a completely unprocessed dry signal to tape on a second track). This givesthe ability to tweak the guitar tone ater the act. I you get the perect perormance, butdiscover on mixdown that the guitar tone isnt sitting quite right in the track, you donthave to bring the guitarist back into the studio (paying his exorbitant rates) to re-cut the

track. You simply eed the dry guitar track back out to an amp and dial up a more appro-priate tone.

To do all this used to require the aorementioned splitter/direct box, some sort o imped-ance and level matching box or eeding the signal back to the guitar amp (because thesignal coming out o the board or direct rom tape doesnt look like a live guitar signalto the amp, so it wont sound quite like a live guitar when youre done), a box ull omics, a closet ull o amps, a tangle o cables, and a lot o time to set all that stu up.What a pain, huh? Well, with the PODxt Live, youve already got the box ull o micsand the closet ull o amps. Weve built the rest into the USB driver (which is, o course, available or ree rom the Line 6 website or through the Line 6 Monkey program wevementioned earlier in this manual).

Re-Amping via USBOnce youve downloaded and installed the USB driver, whether directly rom the Line

6 website or by letting Line 6 Monkey do all the work or you, youre ready to re-amp.Heres how:

The PODxt Family USB driver (which we will henceorth reer to as the driver to saveour delicate typing ngers, okay?) has our (4) dierent signal routing options, all owhich have their own purpose.

    1. Send processed guitar This routing option is the deault setting or normal

recording. As you can see rom the diagram, the guitar goes right to the internalprocessing o the PODxt, the processed signal is sent to the computer (so youcan record it) and the output o the PODxt shows both the processed guitarsignal and the tracks that youre playing on the computer. Pretty straightorward, isnt it?

    2. Send clean guitar This is the basic re-amping get my dry guitar recorded

setting. The dry guitar input signal is sent to the computer or recording, andalso to the internal processing o the PODxt so you can hear how the guitarsounds through the amp and eects youve dialed up. The tracks youre playingand the processed guitar signal are sent to the output o the PODxt so you can

    monitor your perormance.

    3. Send clean guitar, re-amp playback This ones a little tricky, but it has its uses.

The dry guitar is sent to the computer and to the internal processing. Thecomputer signal is also sent to the internal processing and only the internallyprocessed signal rom the PODxt is sent to the outputs. This one is useul iyoure trying to double a guitar track youve already recorded (or play a harmonyline or contrapuntal part to that track) or a track that youll also be re-amping.Youll generally be playing only the 1st track and a click reerence unless you likethe sound o the entire band through a raging amplier.

    4. Send Re-amp playback This would be your traditional re-amping set up. The

computer audio is sent to the internal processing o the PODxt, and the pro-cessed signal is ed back to the computer or recording and to the outputs o the

    PODxt or monitoring.

So how do we put this all together? Heres the basic workfow:

    1. Using routing setting 2 - Send Clean Guitar, record the basic guitar track while

monitoring the whole mix through the PODxts outputs. This should result in arecorded track o crystal clear, unprocessed dry guitar.2. Using routing setting 4 - Send Re-amp Playback, use your recording program to

assign the playback o the track you want to re-amp to the PODxt input and arma new track or recording thats assigned to the PODxt output. When you pressRecord on your sotware, what you should end up with is a new track that hasall the juicy goodness o PODxts amp and eect modeling, while leaving your

original dry track alone, so you can do it all over again with yet another round ore-amping.

Obviously, with all these dierent routing options available, there are a lot o otherthings you can do - ar more than we can cover in this manual, as a matter oact. We recommend spending some time experimenting with the other routingoptions ater you get the basic process down, and i you come up with somethingreally cool and twisted, let us know.

A ew notes about stu that you may run into:

Latency No doubt about it, computer recording has latency issues. Anytime you senda signal in and out o the computer, it takes time, even i its only a couple o millisec-onds. That new track you record by re-amping will be just a wee bit behind the originaltrack. Do it a ew times and itll start to sound unny. Check your recording sotware or alatency compensation eature. Sometimes its automatic, sometimes you just have to dragthe new track backwards a couple o ticks to line it up with the original. Unortunately, theres no magic wand or this. Time only moves orward, at least until you drag the trackback.

Latency, part II How your buer size is set on your recording sotware can have an

adverse eect on latency. Larger buers equal higher latency, small buers equal moreload on your CPU, which can mean clicks, pops, and dropouts. Every system is dierent,so youll have to spend some time nding out what the most reliable settings on yoursystem are. We highly recommend NOT having other programs (like email, browser, andespecially games) running in the background while youre recording. Ater all, they dontplay Pong on the board in a pro recording studio.

The last Edit page gives you the ability to decide, or each Channel Memory, how theVariax will respond when you select the channel on the PODxt Live. Light up the editbutton and spin the effecttweakuntil you get to this last page:

Press the Sot Button 18 undermOdeL, and you can choose dOntchange (PODxt Livewill not orce Variax to change sounds when this PODxt Live channel is selected) or anyo the available models in the Variax in which case PODxt Live will orce the Variax

The other Sot Buttons give you access to the other settings that your Variax lets yousave with your PODxt Live Channel Memory to give you a dialed-in guitar sound whenyou select this PODxt Live channel.

I you select Variax Models by pressing the let Sot Button here and twiddling the ef-fecttweakknob, youll see that in addition to the Variaxs Custom models, there areversions o the rest o the Models whose names are preceded by F- and a set precededby U-. The U- Models are the same ones that you get when you operate the Variaxsown hardware controls or Model selection. These are the same Models that you cancustomize using the Variax Workbench hardware/sotware package (details at the Line 6website). The F- Models are a Factory copy o these same models that are never ed-ited. The reason theyre there is so that PODxt Live sound programmers can always havea known set o Models available in a connected Variax even one thats been ullycustomized with Variax Workbench. All Line 6 provided sounds will be programmedto use these Factory versions o your Variax Models. You should also restrict yoursel tothese Models i you want to be able to share your PODxt Live + Variax settings withother Variax owners, and get predictable results even i theyve customized their Variax.I youd preer to use some other Model instead, you can choose a new one rom your

    Model or you each time.

One other detail: each PODxt Live channel actually stores a separate set o parametersor dierent types o Variax guitars. This way, a programmed sound can be ready tocall up one Model on one type o Variax, while selecting a dierent Model (or none atall) i a dierent type o Variax happens to be connected. For instance, a classic rocklead sound might be set to pull up a LESTER Model on a Variax electric, while leavingthe Model selection o a Variax Acoustic alone. We did it this way so that Line 6 pro-grammed preset sounds or PODxt Live would be able to do the right thing regardless

o which kind o Variax might be connected. As o this writing, there are two amilieso Variax available: the Variax 500/700 electric amily (all guitars in this amily use thesame Model set), and the Variax Acoustic.
