IntroductionOrthodontic treatment relies essentially upon the elastic properties of wires. The spring forces produced when awire is bent are capable of regulating misaligned teeth and bone substance.

During the last few years, thanks to Dentaurum’s initiative, standards have been set for wire properties, at first ona national DIN standardized level and now at ISO level. This is not yet necessarily the norm internationally; evenso, Dentaurum is the first company world wide to present all their existing wires according to their properties andthese standardized demands (DIN 13971, ISO/CD 15841).

In this wire manual you will find the Order No. (REF) on the left hand side as usual and the mechanical propertiesof that relevant product on the right hand side.

From page 8 onwards the terms used in the wire manual and standards are explained. Further useful information, such as product descriptions for wires and arches, material lists including the chemical constituents of the metalalloys used to make the wires and conversion tables can be found in the appendix.

With these various wire descriptions and details we hope to have provided you with an aid and support in your daily work. Should you require any other information regarding the physical and technical properties of the wires and arches available in orthodontics, we recommend the comprehensive publication on this subject by Dr. F. Sernetz printed in the specialist journal Quintessenz Zahntechnik Bd 25, Heft 5-8, 1999, which we will be pleased to forward to you as a printed supplement at your request.

Extraordinary mechanical propertiesHigh flexibility, high elasticityThe fine mechanical properties of Dentaurum’s wires and arches are achieved by an ideal combination of coldprocessing and heat treatment. Thanks to these processes you will always find the ideal amount of elongation, strength and elasticity to fulfil every requirement for effective orthodontic treatment.

Excellent surface qualityLow friction valuesThe so-called diamond polishing method used on Dentaurum’s remanium® and remaloy® wires and arches andthe special processing steps used on Ti and NiTi alloy wires produce virtually scratch-free surfaces, a prerequisite for the low friction values so important in orthodontic treatment. The ultimately smooth surfacesalso reduce the possibility of corrosion and plaque build-up.

Consistent top qualityReliable results every timeAll Dentaurum products undergo strict quality controls according to QM certification. Finest materials and optimalproduction conditions guarantee a consistent and reliable level of quality, also reason for their biocompatibilityand high resistance to oral corrosion. These qualities give the user confidence in his responsibility toward thepatient.

High cross-sectional accuracy and appropriately rounded edgesBest possible transfer of torque Dentaurum’s production techniques and the quality materials used, provide exact cross-sectional accuracy.Rounded edges are reduced to a minimum, so that the wire can sit perfectly and keeping the torque play minimal. This way the best possible torque transfer can be guaranteed.

Tensic®

Thermo-active, nickel titanium archesTensic® arches are super elastic and very easy to bend at room temperature. The transformation temperature, which is close to the body temperature, is responsible for the transfer of constant, gentle pressure, which prevents the risk of root resorption during the levelling phase.

Available in the strength categories

dentaflex®

Twisted and braided, stainless steel wires and archesdentaflex® wires and arches are available as triple strand, twisted wires. They are slightly stronger than the 6-strand, co-axial version, lower in cost and offer a well proven alternative to NiTi wires. Additionally availableare the dentaflex® 8-strand braided arches. These particular arches are especially useful for torque during the initial stages.

Available in the strength categories

rematitan® ”LITE“Nickel titanium archesrematitan® ”LITE” arches are made from a super elastic, nickel titanium alloy. The super elasticity enables aneven and gentle transfer of force due to its elastic recovery, which makes rematitan® ”LITE” arches ideal in thelevelling stage. These wires can also be laser welded.

Available in the strength categories

rematitan® SPECIALTitanium molybdenum wires and archesThe rematitan® SPECIAL wires and arches are a titanium molybdenum nickelfree* alloy, and therefore suitable for patients with nickel allergies. This alloy’s module of elasticity, which is considerably less comparedto that of stainless steel wires, creates significantly lower forces but at the same time enables high elasticityand easy bending properties.

Available in the strength categories

remanium®

Stainless steel wires and archesremanium® wires and arches are the best solution when stronger forces are required or when precise torquecontrol is required towards the end of treatment. The wide spectrum of strength categories available in thisseries allows the use of remanium® wires and arches throughout the entire treatment, even when the wire isfrequently replaced. remanium® wires and arches are easy to form, possible to weld and have smooth, lowfriction surfaces.

The following information is also the recently introduced standardization:

Wire measurementsWire measurements are given in mm according to the metric system. The previously used Anglo-saxon descriptions are permitted to be used as a code(not as a unit of measurement).

Example: An arch with the previous measurements of 0.016" x 0.022" can be described in a code form such as 16 x 22 wire. Its actual measurementshowever are given in mm – eg. 0.41 mm x 0.56 mm. Dentaurum has used thisform of description for years.

Measurement tolerances (measurement limits)The stated wire measurements must comply with certain specific precisionlimits, eg. a stated measurement may only deviate from the accurate measure-ments by a certain tolerance zone determined within the German standards DIN 13971 (see Tab. 1). Dentaurum wires complies with the measurement tolerance according to DIN 13971, which is stricter than the tolerance zonesstated within the ISO/CD 15841.

Linear and non-linear elastic wiresDue to the fact that orthodontic treatment is based upon the bending characteristics of a wire, the international agreement was to classify the wiresaccording to their elasticity. The wires are divided into linear characteristics (Type 1 wires) and non-linear characteristics (Type 2 wires). When wires withlinear elasticity undergo mechanical pressure, they show direct (linear) propor-tional pressure right up to their material’s elastic capacity. All wires belonging tothis Type 1 are made of stainless steel (remanium®, dentaflex®, Noninium®,Equire), cobalt chrome alloy (remaloy®) or Titanium alloy (rematitan®-SPECIAL).Wires belonging to the non-linear elasticity type 2 wires, eg. Non-proportionalelongation when subjected to mechanical pressure, are the super elastic nickeltitanium alloys (rematitan® ”LITE”, Tensic®, Equire).

Page 10: Manual Dentaurum Ingles

Type 1 wires (linear elastic wires)The mechanical characteristics of type 1 wires are defined as follows:

1. Elasticity module EThe elasticity module E (unit of measurement kN/mm2) as a physical characteristic (at room temperature) describes the stiffness of the wire material. The value is determined by the rate of increase of pressure in ratioto the elongation curve in the elastic zone during the traction tests (E = σ / ε, compared fig. 1).

2. Stress proof Rp0.2The stress proof value represents the maximum force a wire can withstand when elastically stretched. It is a technical measurement and therefore depends upon the production process and can subsequently be differentfor each wire. For measurement reasons, the proof stress Rp0.2 (measured in N/mm2) is taken instead of the elasticity limit, since the remaining deformation (stretching) of 0.2% is the same as the elongation limit of Rp0.2(fig. 1). It describes the limit up to which a wire can withhold its elasticity without any remaining deformation(up to 0.2%). This information is not relevant for twisted wires, hence the omission of the ISO/CD 15841.

3. Tensile strength RmThe tensile strength Rm (measured in N/mm2) is the maximum stress registered in a stress-strain curve (fig. 1).Similar to the stress proof, this measurement is technical and therefore not necessarily relevant for the elasticcharacteristics of a wire. Until now (also in the DIN 13971) the tensile strength has been used as a classificationof wire strength or hardness. A ”spring hard” or ”Extra-spring hard” wire is determined by its tensile strength. However, it is more appropriate to distinguish the wires using the stress proof value Rp0.2, which is additionallystated in this brochure. The tensile strength is interesting as much as its relationship between Rp0.2/Rm as a unit of measurement for the brittleness of a wire. This is important when bending wires using pliers. The larger the Rp0.2 is in relationship to Rm value, the quicker the wire will break. This information is not relevantfor twisted wires, hence the omission of the ISO/CD 15841.

4. Extension AThe extension value A (measured in %) shows the amount of force a wire can withstand during traction before breaking (tensile strength tests) (fig. 1). A high extension value shows that a wire has good plastic malleability (easy to bend). This information is not relevant for twisted wires, hence the omission of the ISO/CD 15841.

Fig. 2. Forces produced during labio-lingual deflection andexample of calculation.

Fig. 3: Forces produced during occlusal-gingival deflectionand example of calculation.

5. Flex strength SbThe force required to bend a type 1 wire is proportional to the deflection. This depends upon the wire’s diameter and length. It has been agreed in the ISO/CD 15841 that the so-called 3 point strength test shouldbe undertaken using a wire length of 10 mm and medium force. The length of 10 mm and medium force corresponds to the distance between three neighbouring brackets with the central bracket acting as thedeflection element. The flexural strength Sb (measured in N/mm) is therefore the method of measurement, which states the stiffness of each individual wire diameter when being bent. In orthodontics this measurementaids in assessing the amount of force a particular wire will exert when correcting misaligned teeth (fig. 2 and fig. 3).As with all wires, the labio-lingual deflection values (flex 1st degree) are stated separately from the occlusal-gingival values (flex 2nd degree).

6. Flex limit S0.1If, when a wire is being bent, the elasticity limit is exceeded, the wire will remain deformed. Similar to the tensile strength tests, the elasticity limit is also difficult to measure. Analogous to the proof stress Rp0.2, theflexural limit S0.1 (measured in N) states the flexural strength, defined when there is a remaining wire de-formation of 0.1 mm after testing. A type 1 wire can keep its elasticity entirely up to the flexural limit. As with all wires, the labio-lingual de-flection values (flex 1st degree) are stated separately from the occlusal-gingival values (flex 2nd degree).

The characteristics Rp0.2, Rm, A, Sb and S0.1 for typical Dentaurum type 1 wires are statedfor each individual Order No. (REF) according to wire and wire measurement.

Type 1 wires: Fa = Sb (1st degree) x a(Example: remanium® 16 x 22, a = 0.5 mm)

Type 2 wires: Fa = F0.5 (1st degree)(Example: Tensic® 16 x 22, a = 0.5 mm)

F0.5 = 1.18 N ≈ 118 g

Type 1 wires: Fa = Sb (2nd degree) x a(Example: remanium® 16 x 22, a = 0.5 mm)F0.5 = 14.6 N/mm x 0.5 mm = 7.3 N ≈ 730 g

Type 2 wires (super elastic wires)NiTi wire has been widely used for decades in orthodontics due to its unique mechanical properties which differ from other metals such as stainless steel. At first, NiTi wire (eg. Nitinol) was used because of its low elasticity module (1/5 of that of steel) and its extraordinarily large linear elasticity and reversibility. Originally thesuper elasticity of these wires was suppressed using the cold processing method. In the last few years, thanksto specific transformation temperature selection, it has been possible to influence NiTi alloy wires to react in a non-linear elastic manner when under stress (traction or bending) at body temperature. During bending, the elongation value does not increase in a linear manner, but curves to a flexural force plateau, and thenincreases without any considerable increase in force. Once the pressure is released the effect is reversible withthe difference that the flexural force plateau is lower than when under pressure.

The differences with the NiTi wires from Dentaurum (rematitan® ”LITE", Tensic® and Equire) are their transformation temperatures and therefore their different bending force values, at given wire cross sectionmeasurements, depending upon body temperature and transformation temperatures.

For type 2 wires the mechanical properties may be defined as follows:

1. Flexural force plateau F3.0, F2.0, F1.0, F0.5As determined in the ISO/CD15841, the mechanical properties of type 2 wires with non-linear elasticity, eg.the super elastic NiTi wires, must only be determined using the 3 point flexural test. These wires (rematitan®

”LITE", Tensic® and Equire) react in a super elastic manner under force and are reversible to a large extent. Theflexural forces Fa (measured in N) are therefore stated at a determined deflection value (fig. 4) of 3.1 mm andthen again after having been released at 3.0, 2.0, 1.0 and 0.5 mm. The orthodontist is subsequently able todistinguish from the tables not only how much force will be exerted onto the patient’s misaligned teeth butalso at which consistency these forces work. The established forces apply at body temperature (37 ± 2) °C /(98.6 ± 35.6) °F.With square wires the flexural force plateau for labio-lingual deflection values (flex 1st degree) is stated separatelyfrom the occlusal-gingival values (flex 2nd degree).

2. Reversibility Rev.As a rule, if the super elastic wires show mechanical properties of high elasticity they will also prove to be rever-sible Rev. (measured in %) during force and after release. For this reason reversibility is determined by thedegree of deformation after bending (in %) at a deflection value of 3.1 mm and then completely released.

3. Transformation temperature AfThe mechanical properties of the NiTi wires used in orthodontics depend upon the transformation temperatures, whereby the martensitic phase converts into the austenitic phase. According to the ISO/CD 15841 so-calledaustenitic finish temperature Af (measured in °C / °F) is a temperature which is determined when the marten-sitic phase has completely converted into the austenitic phase. The smaller the difference between the bodytemperature and the Af is, the lower the forces are at the super elastic plateau (flexural force plateau).

The characteristics F3.0, F2.0, F1.0, F0.5, Rev. and Af for typical Dentaurum type 2 wires are stated for each individual Order No. (REF) according to wire and wire measurement.

Material componentsAll wires used in orthodontics are made from metal alloys. The chemical components (in percentages) can befound in the material list in the appendix.

Corrosive behaviourThe bio-compatibility of the individual metal alloy wires can be distinguished by their corrosive behaviour. Thecorrosive behaviour is tested according to the international standards ISO 10271. Dentaurum can declare witha clear conscience that all their existing wires have passed this test proving excellent resistance to corrosion.

Austenitic structuresIron alloys (steels) are available in various crystalline structures according to their chemical constituents anddepending on their temperature.

Austenitic structures in steel are determined by their cubic surface lattice structures, showing no ferro-magnetisms (cannot be magnetised like a rod magnet). Normal steels (eg. building steel) are only stable at temperatures of over 900 °C / 1652 °F. Austenitic lattice structures can be observed at room temperature inthe so-called austenitic, rust-free, chrome-nickel steels.

With the nickel titanium alloys used in orthodontics, the existing crystalline structure (cubic space lattice structure) created at higher temperatures, converts into a hexagonal dense crystalline structure at the so-called transformation temperature. Here too the high temperature phase is known as austenitic and the lowertemperature phase is known as martensitic.

Martensitic structuresThe martensitic structures of low alloyed steels, known as cubic space lattices, convert into the austenitic phasewhen abruptly cooled (when ”quenched”) to lower temperatures. The transformation occurs suddenly. Afterquenching, more carbon is released in the martensitic phase than the thermo dynamic equilibrium can yield. In this condition, steel is extremely hard and brittle. It is possible to adjust the hardness and strength preciselyusing appropriate heat treatments such as tempering or annealing.

With nickel titanium alloys used in orthodontics, similar crystalline processes occur as with steel. The austeniticphase created by higher temperatures is converted into the martensitic phase by lower temperatures. This conversion in NiTi alloys occurs with a certain hysteresis and at a particular temperature zone, which is lowerduring cooling than heating. The mechanical characteristics in the austenitic phase comply with type 1 wiresand are very different in the martensitic phase. For example, a bent wire in a martensitic state will re-adjustinto its original form when heated above the transformation temperature. This effect is known as the shapememory effect.

A martensitic transformation can also be initiated during mechanical force in the austenitic phase, when the force is exerted at a temperature just above the transformation temperature (stress induced martensiticstructure). In this state the NiTi wire has super elastic characteristics.
