MANUAL 1. Getting Started
We recommend that you read the complete text of each topic and then carry out the operations it de-scribes. This method will give the optimum balance between theory and practice and familiarize you with the EBC and software without making any mistakes.
All warranty claims accounted for non-compliance of the instructions.
1.1. Purchased Parts Package
EBC Handheld Infrared Reader (COMMUNICATOR)
Interface cable for communication and charging
Programming and Analyzing Software, Manual on CD
1.2. Usage
The EBC reader allows you to communicate with the EBC modules to install the EBC and download data.
The Interface cable, included in the starter kit, enables you to transfer the data on your PC or Laptop. The easy-to-install EBC-software (EBC READOUT) is also included.

The manufacturer excludes liability for damage caused by:
Improper use of the manual
Mismanagement or by using the product outside the specification

2. Safety Instructions
The within the chapter - technical data - listed operation conditions may not be exceeded! Take espe-cially care not to exceed the battery voltage.
The device may only be used according to the manual. The handheld may not be manipulated!
Aggressive cleaning fluids may not be used for cleaning the device in order not to damage the outer surface.
A possibly exchange of the accu may only be carried out by trained staff.
Note: the common safety regulations according to VDE/CE standards are valid.

4. Servicing the Handheld
The Handheld Infrared reader does not require any service.
For cleaning the unit from the outside use only soft tissue with a mild household cleaner.

5. Setting up and Operation
5.1. Handheld Reader switch on and off
By pressing the tab ON (2 sec.) you turn on the handheld.
Pressing ESC (4 sec.) the handheld will turn off.
After turning on the handheld the Display will show the Start Menue.
If the handheld has already IR-connection to the EBC, it will also show the actual battery power and the battery ID.

In case of no communication to an EBC the Handheld display will show.
INFO When using the handheld without PC or charger it will turn off by itself after 5 minutes without operation to save battery power.
Connected to a PC or battery charger by using the USB cable will automatically turn on the handheld.

5.2. Installation Handheld Infrared Reader
ATTENTION Usage and Communication of data with the EBC or a computer requires some simple steps to activate and evaluate the handheld.
NOTE Make sure that date and time of the handheld are set properly be-fore you start setting up an EBC modul.
By clicking INSTALL in the main menu you will reach following al-ternatives:
Setting up date and time of the handheld
Changing Password
Customer name
Reset of the unit

5.2.1. Setting date and time

Step 1:
The tab ↓ leads you to the main menu. Go to Setting by using the tabs ↓ and ↑ and click .

Step 2:
SETTING requires a password. After typing a password (factory setting: 000000) you will reach SETTING.

Go to Date / Time by using the tabs ↓ ↑ and click. You reach the menu to set up time and date.

Now you can type Date and Time. (Example: 16 May 2007, 13:57:03).
Clicking the tab leads you to the Setup main menu.
INFO The internal clock has a battery puffer and will run even when the handheld is turned off.

5.2.2. Changing the password
ATTENTION
Important Setting and functions of the unit are secured by a password to avoid deleting data without knowing or manipula-tion.
Please change the password (000000). Make sure that this password will not get in the hands of unauthorized personnel.
Loss of the password requires a reset of the unit. This will de-lete all collected data in the handheld Infrared Reader. The new password after resetting the unit is again 000000.
Step 1 – Step 3:
For setting your own personal password or changing the existing password repeat Step 1 to Step 3 in chapter 5.2.1.
You will reach Setting2.

Follow the screen instructions.
Repeat your number code by typing the password again.

The unit will automatically store your password after correct input.
Clicking ESC leads you to the menu Install 2.
Every click on the tab ESC takes you one Step back in the menu.

5.2.3. Changing the language
Step 1 – Step 3:
The original standard language in the handheld is German.
In need of changing the language to English repeat Step 1 to Step 3 in chapter 5.2.1. You reach Install 2.

Step 4:
Go to Language by using the tab ↓ and click .

Step 5:
Go to English by using the tabs ↓ ↑, choose your preferred lan-guage and click .
The unit will automatically lead you to Install 2.
Every click on the tab ESC takes you one Step back in the menu.
INFO The Set Up of the Handheld Infrared Reader is now finished.
From here you can start installing the EBC units.

5.3. Set up and changing settings of the EBC
NOTE Before installing the EBC units make sure that the handheld is already installed (go to chapter 5.2).
Setup of the EBC units, i.e. the ID of a battery in order to individual-ize your batteries, requires only one ID per Handheld Infrared Reader.
ATTENTION All collected data will be deleted from the EBC by processing the set-up or changing any battery ID.
Make sure that the collected data is already downloaded (go to chapter 5.4).

Go to the main Menu by using ↓.
Go to Setting by using the tab ↓ and click .

Step 2:
The function SET UP of the EBC units is secured by a password to avoid unauthorized operation and programming.
After typing 000000 (go to 5.2.2 ) or your personal password you can reach the software function SETTING.

Step 3:
Go to Battery by using the tab ↓ and click.

Step 4:
Type in the new Battery ID (see commitments) and click . Hereaf-ter you reach the function to type in the name of your customer or project.
The Battery ID contains of 2 numbers, two letters followed by 6 numbers.

Set up and changing settings of the EBC (continued)
NOTE Commitments for Battery Identification numbers (ID):
Use the first two digits as a running number (see example 15) to identify forklift, battery or any kind of equipment.
Input is uncommitted.
Use the first letter in order to identify the battery if it is a primary or secondary battery (A = primary battery, W = secondary bat-tery)
For a battery, which is equipped with electrolyte circulation system choose E
Input is committed.
Use the second letter in order to identify the manufacturer of the battery. (e.g. H for a Hawker battery)
Input is uncommitted.
Use the last six digits to type in the installation date of the battery (format has to be: dd.mm.yy).
Input is committed.
ATTENTION DO NOT USE SPACES OR SPECIAL CHARACTERS!

Step 5:
Type in the name of the customer (max.10 letters or numbers) or project and click .
To enter numbers, press and hold the keys one second.
CUSTOMER NAME or number sequence consists of (maximum) 10 points.
Spaces or special characters are not allowed.

Type in the amount of plates per battery cell. (e.g. 8) and the capac-ity of the battery in Ah (e.g. 960A) and click .
Now choose the Voltage (24V, 48V or 80V).by using the tabs ↓ ↑ .

Send Data
Step 7:
Make sure that the Handheld Infrared Reader and EBC can com-municate by controlling the communication quality in the handheld display and press.
The handheld will now send the programmed data through the infra-red port to the EBC.

Step 8:
Successful data transfer will be shown on the display of the hand-held by Data OK.
Click the tab ESC to get back to Setting. Clicking the tab ESC again leads you back in the menu step by step.

5.4. Download data from the EBC unit and data transfer to the PC
NOTE The best results the reading distance during communication be-tween the EBC and the handheld is between 50 mm to 150 mm. Date and Time of the EBC unit will be evaluated to the handheld automatically after downloading the data from the EBC unit.
5.4.1. Download data

Step 1:
Make sure that the reading distance is acceptable and click ●))) to start the download process.
The EBC unit will now send the collected data via the infrared port to the handheld. An indicator shows the actual state of the data transfer.

Step 2:
DATA OK displays the correct and successful download.
By using the ↓ ↑ tabs you can examine the downloaded data. (go to step 3).
Click ESC to change to Start menu.

The display shows the amount of charging cycles (i.e. 6) and date and time of the last charge.

The display shows the amount of disconnecting or turning-off the EBC unit (e.g.. 0) and date and time of the last removal.

The display shows the time and date the battery was first installed (see chapter 5.3 for more information).

The display shows the acid density (in g/cm³), battery voltage und Cell voltage (in V) at the time of reading.

Step 10 … :
The Handheld stores max. the last 10 events e.g. deep discharges, in-between charges, cycles of charges, charge interrups. These will be recorded and stored with date and time. Move with " ↓ ↑ " and scroll up and down the memory.
Pressing ESC finishes the data reading and download process.
All downloaded data is stored in the handheld except the data of Step 9; for reviewing the date see Chapter 5.4.2.

5.4.2. Examine Data
NOTE For viewing already downloaded data it is not required to be con-nected to the EBC unit.
Turn on the handheld and click ↓ to reach the main menu.

The display shows number of set of data, the battery ID and the customer name.
Pressing the tabs ↓ and ↑ leads you to the preferred data. Click .

Step 3:
By using the tabs ↓ and ↑ you can scroll through the whole data sheet (see chapter 5.4.1).
Pressing ESC leads you back to the menu Select Set of Data; to get back to the main menu press tab ESC twice.
NOTE The datasheets of every customer are in alphabetical order, sorted by customer name and Battery ID.
Typing in the customer Name on the keyboard of the handheld leads you direct to the first datasheet of the customer.

5.4.3. Deleting downloaded data
HINWEIS To remove downloaded data from the handheld, turn it on and use the tab ↓ in order to get to the main menu.
A connection between the handheld and the EBC unit is not re-quired.

The display shows the number of the data sheet, the battery ID and the customer name. Use the tabs ↓ and ↑ to choose the data sheet you want to delete and click .

Step 5:
To avoid deleting data you do not want to remove, the handheld will ask again if you want to remove the chosen data sheet. Press the tab and the data is removed.
If you want to stop the process press ESC to get back to step 4.

5.4.4. Data transfer to your PC
NOTE The USB port and the USB interface cable enables you to transfer downloaded data from the handheld to your PC or Laptop in order to examine the data.
Hardware requirements
Windows 2000 or higher
Port: USB 1.0 or better
The software to transfer data from the handheld to the PC is delivered on a CD-Rom with your Communicator.
If you are installing from the CD Rom drive, follow the CD Rom instructions.
Ensure that the software EBC READOUT is properly installed.
Use the USB Interface cable to connect the handheld and your computer to enable communication and transfer the required data.
With a click on the button READOUT DATA in the software the download is started.
After sending the data disconnect the Handheld from your computer by removing the USB Interface cable.
The data transfer does not delete the data on the handheld.

5.4.5. Reset of the Handheld Infrared Reader
WARNING The Reset of the Handheld unit will delete all data including the password.
We recommend to store all data files on your computer first to avoid loss of any data later required (to download data see chapter 5.4.4).
It is not possible to return to the stage after resetting the unit.
For Reset turn off the Handheld unit.
Then turn on the Handheld by pressing the tab ON and the tab; this leads you to the menue RESET.

Pressing the tab ESC the deleting process can still be stopped.

Removal of all data and successful Resetting of the unit will be shown by displaying done. Use the ESC tab to get to the start menue.

5.4.6. Calibration of the handheld
WARNING A calibration of the handheld is not required under normal operation.
Calibration of the unit is only allowed by the manufacturer.
The company excludes any liability for damage or defects in the goods caused by calibration by any other not authorized party.
6. Troubleshooting
