MANTRAS FROM VAIROCANABHISAMBODHI SUTRA

Mantras that have the word o at the beginning and have svāhā added at the end are ṃfor use in pacifying calamities; If a mantra begins with the word o and has hū pha ṃ ṃ ṭadded at the end, it is for use in summoning; Those with nama at the beginning and endḥare for use in increasing benefits, and those with hū pha at the beginning and end are ṃ ṭfor use in subjugating; The word hū and the word pha are applicable to [all] three ṃ ṭsituations, and add the name [of the person concerned] in between.

The mantra for perfumed water: Nama samantabuddhānā , apratisame ḥ ṃgaganasame samatā-nugate prak tiviśuddhe dharmadhātuviśodhani svāhā.ṛ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who are without equal! You who are equal to the sky! You who have attained equality! You who are pure by nature! You who purify the dharma realm! Svāhā!)

Nama samantabuddhānā , sarvatathāgatādhi hānādhi hite acale vimale ḥ ṃ ṣṭ ṣṭsmara e prak ti-pariśuddhe svāhā.ṇ ṛ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have been empowered by the empowerment of all the Tathāgatas! Unmoving one! Unsullied one! You who remember! You who are completely pure by nature! Svāhā!)

Nama samantabuddhānā , agnaye svāhā.ḥ ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! For Agni, svāhā!)

Nama samantabuddhānā , ā mahāśāntigata śāntikara praśama-dharmanirjāta ḥ ṃ ḥabhāvasvabhāvadharmasamatāprāpta svāhā. (Homage to all buddhas! Ā ! O you who ḥhave reached great tranquility! You who bring about tranquility! You who are born of thedharma of calmness! You who have obtained sameness with dharmas that have non-being as their intrinsic nature! Svāhā!)

Very Powerful Great Protection: Nama sarvatathāgatebhya sarvabhayavigatebhyo ḥ ḥviśvamukhebhya , sarvathā ha kha rak a mahābale sarvatathāgataḥ ṃ ṃ ṣ -pu yanirjāteṇhū hū trā trā apratihate svāhā.ṃ ṃ ṭ ṭ (Homage to all tathāgatas, who are free from all fear and are in all directions! In every way, ha [kha ], protect! O you of great strength!ṃ ṃYou who are born of the merit of all tathāgatas! Hū hū trā trā ! You who are ṃ ṃ ṭ ṭunimpeded! Svāhā!)

Birth in the Dharma realm: Nama samantabuddhānā , dharmadhātusvabhāvako ḥ ṃ’ham. (Homage to all Buddhas! I have the intrinsic nature of the Dharma realm.)

The mantra for empowerment by Vajrasattva: Nama samantavajrā ā , vajrātmako ḥ ṇ ṃ’ham. (Homage to all Vajras! I am of the nature of a vajra.)

The mantra of adamantine armor: Nama samantavajrā ā , vajrakavaca hū . ḥ ṇ ṃ ṃ(Homage to all Vajras! O adamantine armor! Hū !) ṃ

The mantra of the Tathāgata’s eye or vision: Nama samantabuddhānā , ḥ ṃtathāgatacak u vyavalokaya svāhā.ṣ (Homage to all Buddhas! O Tathāgata’s eye! Behold! Svāhā!)

The unguent mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , viśuddhagandhod-bhava svāhā.ḥ ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have risen from pure unguent! Svāhā!)

The flower mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , mahāmaitryabhyudgate svāhā.ḥ ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have arisen from great benev- olence! Svāhā!)

The food mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , ararakalalabali dadāmi bali dade ḥ ṃ ṃ ṃmahābali svāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! I give a food offering of arara and kalala. I givea food offering. Great food offering! svāhā!)

The lamp mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , tathāgatārcisphara ā- ḥ ṃ ṇvabhāsanagaganaudārya svāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! O suffusion of the Tathāgata’slight, with a brilliance as vast as the firmament! Svāhā!)

The argha mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , gaganasamāsama svāhā.ḥ ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who are equal to the sky and unequaled! Svāhā!)

The mantra of the Tathāgata’s crown: Nama samantabuddhānā , ḥ ṃgaganānantasphara a viśuddhadharmanirjāta svāhā.ṇ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who infinitely pervade the sky! You who are born of the pure Dharma! Svāhā!)

The mantra of the Tathāgata’s armor: Nama samantabuddhānā , vajra- jvāla ḥ ṃvisphura hū .ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! O adamantine flame! Flash! Hū !)ṃ

The mantra of the Tathāgata’s halo: Nama samantabuddhānā , jvālā- ḥ ṃ mālini tathāgatārci svāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have a wreath of flames! light of the Tathāgata! Svāhā!)

The mantra of the Tathāgata’s tongue: Nama samantabuddhānā , mahāmaha ḥ ṃtathāgatajihva satyadharmaprati hita svāhā.ṣṭ (Homage to all Buddhas! O great amongthe great! Tongue of the Tathāgata! That which is established in the true Dharma! Svāhā!)

Samantabhadra dwelled in the samādhi “Adornment of the Buddha’s Sphere” and

uttered the mantra of unobstructed strength: Nama samantabuddhānā , ḥ ṃsamatānugata virajadharmanirjāta mahāmaha svāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have attained equality! You who are born of the unsoiled Dharma! Great among the great! Svāhā!)

Maitreya dwelled in the samadhi “Generation of Universal Great Benevolence” and uttered the heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , ajita jaya ḥ ṃ ṃsarvasattvāśayānugata svāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who vanquish the unvanquished! You who follow the inclinations of all beings! Svāhā!)

Akasagarbha dwelled in the samadhi “Sphere of Purity” and uttered the heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , ākāśasamatānugata vicitrāmbaradhara ḥ ṃsvāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have attained equality with space! You who wear a many-colored raiment! Svāhā!)

Sarvanivara aviskambhinṇ dwelled in the samadhi “Power of Compassion” and utteredthe heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , ā sattvahitābhyudgata tra tra ḥ ṃ ḥ ṃ ṃra ra svāhā.ṃ ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! Ā ! O you who have arisen for the weal of ḥbeings! tra tra ra ra ! Svāhā!)ṃ ṃ ṃ ṃ

Avalokitesvara dwelled in the samadhi “Universal Gaze” and uttered the heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , sarvatathāgatāvalokita karu āmaya ra raḥ ṃ ṇra hū ja svāhā.ṃ ḥ (Homage to all Buddhas! O gaze of all Tathāgatas! that which is formed of compassion! ra ra ra hū ja ! Svāhā!)ṃ ḥ

Mahasthamaprapta uttered the heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , ja ja ḥ ṃ ṃ ṃsa svāhā.ḥ (Homage to all Buddhas! Ja ja sa ! Svāhā!)ṃ ṃ ḥ

Tara uttered the heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , karu odbhave tāre ḥ ṃ ṇtāri i svāhā.ṇ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who have risen from compassion! Tārā! savioress! Svāhā!)

Great Bh ku ī uttered the heart-mantra:ṛ ṭ Nama samantabuddhānā , ḥ ṃsarvabhaya-trāsani hū spho aya svāhā.ṃ ṭ (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who frighten away all fears! Hū ! Rend! Svāhā!)ṃ

Pā aravāsinī:ṇḍ Nama samantabuddhānā , tathāgatavi ayasa bhave padmamālini ḥ ṃ ṣ ṃsvāhā. (Homage to all Buddhas! O you who are born from the sphere of the Tathāgatas! You who have a garland of lotuses! Svāhā!)

Hayagrīva: Nama samantabuddhānā , hū khāda bhañja spho aya svāhā.ḥ ṃ ṃ ṭ (Homage to all Buddhas! Hū ! Devour! Shatter! Rend! Svāhā!)ṃ

K itigarbha dwelled in the samādhi “Sphere of Adamantine Indestructible Conduct” ṣ

and uttered this mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , ha ha ha sutanu svāhā.ḥ ṃ (Homage to all Buddhas! Ha ha ha! O you with a beautiful body! Svāhā!)

Mañjuśrī dwelled in the samādhi “Supernatural Power of the Buddha’s Empowerment”and uttered his own heart-mantra: Nama samantabuddhānā , he he kumāraka ḥ ṃvimuktipathasthita smara smara pratijñā svāhā.ṃ (Homage to all buddhas! Ho! Ho! Young boy! You who abide on the path to liberation! Remember, remember your vow! Svāhā!)

Vajrapā i dwelled in the samādhi “Great Adamantine Invincibility” ṇ and uttered his own heart-mantra and the mantras of his attendants: Nama samantavajrā ā , ḥ ṇ ṃca amahāro a a hū .ṇḍ ṣ ṇ ṃ (Homage to all Vajras! O you who are violent and very wrathful!Hū !)ṃ

Māmakī: Nama samantavajrā ā , tri tri jayanti svāhā.ḥ ṇ ṃ ṭ ṭ (Homage to all Vajras! Tri ṭtri ! O victress! Svāhā!)ṭ

O you who have the excellent attributes of the sky! You who are equal to the sky! You who are born from gifts arisen everywhere! Burn! Homage to the infallible ones!Svāhā!)

In order to quell all obstacles, Vairocana, dwelled in the samādhi “Born of Fire” and uttered this mantra of the great destroyer of obstacles, the holy one Acalanātha: Nama samantavajrā ā , ca amahāro a a spho- aya hū traka hā mā .ḥ ṇ ṃ ṇḍ ṣ ṇ ṭ ṃ ṃ ṃ (Homage to all Vajras! O you who are violent and very wrathful! rend! hū traka hā ṃ ṃmā !)ṃ

The mantra of Trailokyavijaya: Nama samantavajrā ā , ha ha ha vismaye ḥ ṇ ṃsarvatathāgatavi ayasa bhava trailokyavijaya hū ja svāhā.ṣ ṃ ṃ ḥ (Homage to all Vajras! Ha ha ha! O wondrous one! you who are born from the sphere of all Tathāgatas! Conqueror of the Three Worlds [Trailokyavijaya]! hū ja ! Svāhā!)ṃ ḥ

The heart-mantra common to mundane gods and so on: Nama samanta- ḥbuddhānā , lokālokakarāya sarvadevanāgayak agandharvāsuragaru a- ṃ ṣ ḍki naramahoragādih dayāny ākar aya vicitragati svāhā.ṃ ṛ ṣ (Homage to all Buddhas! For the sake of illuminating the world! draw in the hearts of all gods, nāgas, yak as, ṣgandharvas, asuras, garu as, ki naras, mahoragas, and so on! O you who move in ḍ ṃmanifold ways! Svāhā!)

The mantra of the expedient means for offering one’s body is: O ṃsarva-tathāgatapūjāpravartanāyātmāna niryātayāmi sarvatathāgatāś cādhiti- ṃ

hantā[ ] sarvatathāgatajñāna me āviśatu. (O , I offer myself for the incitement of ṣṭ ṃ ṃ ṃworship of all Tathāgatas. May all Tathāgatas empower [me], and may the knowledge of all Tathāgatas enter upon me!)
