1. INTRODUCTION This guide describes the preventive maintenance instructions for GII, ARGUS, AURORA, and the newest version of our product line, known as ADVANTAGE. Visual inspection and cleaning are the only preven-tive maintenance actions required for the Currency Validator. After the unit is cleaned, the technician will perform the Video-Level Adjustment (VLA) procedure. The VLA is used to calibrate the unit’s optical sensing circuitry. Upon completion of VLA, the technician should perform the Functional Test and/or the Service Acceptance Test. These tests will ensure that the unit is functioning properly and operating at a satisfactory bill ac-ceptance rate.

2. PERIODIC CLEANING Depending on its environment and usage, the Currency Validator may require periodic cleaning to restore it to optimum performance. Under normal use, the Currency Validator should be checked every 6 to 12 months. For unusual operating conditions, such as when the unit is exposed to dirt, dust, water spray, airborne oil and/or sand, more fre-quent cleaning will be required. To remove dirty deposits and smudges from the bezel and other sur-faces of the Currency Validator, use a soft, lint-free cloth, dampened with a 90-percent solution of isopropyl alcohol only.

CAUTION: DO NOT flood the bezel area with liquids, as this can damage the electronics within the unit.

2.1 Cleaning Currency Channel With constant use, a buildup of dirt, which is transferred from the sur-face of the bills, will accumulate on the pressure rollers, drive rollers, and optics. Periodically, these parts should be cleaned to ensure reli-able operation.

2.2 Required Items The items required to clean the Currency Validator are: • Soft, lint-free cloth

• Isopropyl alcohol (90-percent solution)

• Oil-free, compressed air.

2.3 Procedure To clean and inspect the Currency Validator, follow these steps:

WARNING: AVOID PERSONAL INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT. DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE SERVICING THE UNIT.

1. Power down Currency Validator and disconnect Host machine’s interface cable from Currency Validator’s main connector (e.g., MDB or RS-232 Serial Connector.

2. Remove Currency Validator from its mounting frame.

CAUTIONS:

1. DO NOT scratch the surfaces of the optics window while cleaning these components, as this can impair the performance of the Currency Validator.

2. DO NOT allow liquid to contact the drive belts or enter the unit, as this can damage components.

3. DO NOT use unapproved cleaners, as this can cause permanent surface damage; use only cleaners as directed in this procedure.

4. DO NOT use cotton swabs to clean the unit, as this can leave unwanted material on the surfaces.

3. Access the currency channel as follows:

• For GII units, swing out the Upper-Guide Assembly. • For Argus units, release the spring-loaded latches and then

open the Upper-Guide Assembly; DO NOT exceed 90 degrees when opening the Upper-Guide Assembly or damage to wiring can occur.

• For Aurora units, depress spring-loaded Lever Latch at rear of validator head and then pull Lower-Guide Assembly out of Up-per-Guide Assembly.

• For Advantage units, swing out the Upper-Guide Assembly.

4. Using a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with 90-percent isopropyl alcohol, clean the following areas (Figures 1, 2, 3, or 4):

a) Currency channel surfaces: remove any surface dirt on upper and lower guides.

b) Optics windows: clean optics window surfaces on upper and lower guides.

c) Drive and Pressure Rollers: clean rollers on the upper and lower guides.

d) Side-looking Sensors: clean sensor surfaces.

e) Bar Code Reader/Mag head: carefully remove deposits from surface areas; DO NOT scratch surface areas.

f) Front and Rear Optical Sensors: clean all surfaces.

g) Using oil-free compressed air only, dry all surfaces to remove residue.

5. Swing Upper-Guide Assembly to its closed (locked) pos ition; for Argus units, verify that both spring-loaded latches are fully en-gaged.

6. Perform Video-Level Adjustment (refer to Section 3).

7. Perform Functional Test (refer to Section 4) and/or Service Ac-ceptance Test (refer to Section 5).

3. VIDEO-LEVEL ADJUSTMENT The Video-Level Adjustment (VLA) is performed to calibrate the opti-cal sens ing circuitry of the Currency Validator. Using the required VLA card for your unit, the optical sensing circuitry can be calibrated to its optimum levels. This can be done in the gaming machine or at the workbench with just a power source. This procedure is applicable to all GPT Currency Validators and must be performed under the following conditions:

• At final installation of the gaming machine, prior to public use (this includes retrofitting Currency Validators into gaming ma-chines at the casino or operator site).

• After the unit is reconfigured to accept a different size currency (e.g., when the width of the currency channel is changed).

• After preventive or corrective maintenance.

• Whenever bank note acceptance is degraded.

• When a database with a 100-series program is replaced by a 200-series program, or vice versa.

Note: When a 200-series program is replaced by another 200-series program, it is NOT necessary to perform the VLA. To determine the software type, refer to the XProgramX label or the Program Revision Number on your Program Specification Sheet.

3.1 Required Items Items required to perform the VLA are:

• Applicable Program Specification Sheet

CAUTION: ONLY USE the correct VLA card as indicated in your Program Specification Sheet. When doing a VLA, using the wrong VLA card can cause impaired Currency Validator performance.

• VLA Card for 68-mm wide channel (GPT PN 375EO004) used with Advantage units

• VLA Card for 82-mm wide channel (GPT PN 375EO005) used with Advantage units

• VLA Card for 72-mm wide channel (GPT PN 300EO005) used with GII+ CAN/BB, Argus and Aurora units

• VLA Card for 85-mm wide channel (GPT PN 300EO019) used with GII+ SBB and Argus and units

• VLA Card for 66-mm wide channel (GPT PN 300EO035) used with GII+ STD units

• VLA Card (GPT PN 65902) used with GII units only

• Small DIP-switch manipulator (e.g., a small, non-metallic, non-conductive stick-like item such as a toothpick or plastic tweez-ers).

3.2 VLA Procedure for GII/GII+ Units To perform VLA for GII/GII+ units only, follow these steps:

1. Power-down Currency Validator.

2. Set DIP Switch 9 to on position (i.e., move switch toward number) (Figure 5).

Note: Ensure DIP-Switches 7 and 8 are set to off position (i.e., move switch away from number); otherwise, the Currency Validator will enter the Download Mode.

3. Power-up Currency Validator.

CAUTION: DO NOT use cut, torn, creased, folded or perforated VLA cards. Damaged cards can skew the VLA and should be replaced.

4. Insert VLA Card.

5. Wait for Currency Validator to step out the VLA Card, and then set DIP-Switch 9 to the off position.

6. Power-down Currency Validator.

7. Set all DIP switches to their normal positions per Program Speci-fication Sheet for your software configuration.

3.3 VLA Procedure for ARGUS/ADVANTAGE Units To perform VLA for Argus or Advantage units only, follow these steps:

1. Power-down Currency Validator.

2. Set DIP-Switches 8 and 9 to on position (i.e., move switch toward number) (Figure 6).

Note: DIP-Switches 8 and 9 are used for servicing the Currency Validator. All other DIP Switches are set to the specific application Program Specification Sheet for your unit and SHOULD NOT be changed.

3. Power-up Currency Validator.

CAUTION: DO NOT use cut, torn, creased, folded or perforated VLA cards for this test. Damaged cards can skew the VLA. Such damaged cards should be discarded and replaced.

4. Insert VLA Card. The VLA Card will be drawn into the Currency Validator. If the in-ternal temperature of Currency Validator is between 25°C and 60°C, the red LED will illuminate and stay on, indicating that VLA is being performed. When the temperature is outside the range of 25°C and 60°C, the red LED will flash. The Currency Validator will wait, up to 5 minutes, for temperature to be correct, and then pro-ceed with VLA.

Note: The VLA Card should be stored on a flat surface to prevent damage (e.g., creases and folds) to the card.

5. Power-down Currency Validator.

6. Set DIP-Switches 8 and 9 to off position (i.e., move switch away from number), and then set other switches as specified by appli-cable Program Specification Sheet for your software configuration.

3.4 VLA Procedure for AURORA Units To perform VLA for Aurora units only, follow these steps:

1. Power-down Currency Validator.

2. To enable VLA mode, set DIP-Switch 5 to on position (i.e., down, toward number) (Figure 7); all remaining switches should be set to off (up) position.

Note: DIP-Switch 5 is used for servicing the Currency Valida-tor. All other DIP Switches are set to the applicable Program Specification Sheet for your unit and SHOULD NOT be changed.

3. Power-up Currency Validator. Observe the red LED is flashing and the green LED is off (indicating unit is waiting for insertion of VLA card).

CAUTION: DO NOT use cut, torn, creased, folded or perfo-rated VLA cards for this test. Such damaged cards should be discarded and replaced.

4. Insert VLA Card after validator’s green LED turns off and red LED starts flashing.

Note: The VLA Card will be drawn into the Currency Valida-tor. The red LED will stop flashing and will remain lit. After 20 to 25 seconds, the VLA card will be ejected from the Currency Validator, indicating the end of the validator’s adjustment. The red LED will start flashing and the unit will return to VLA mode.

5. Power-down Currency Validator.

6. Set DIP-Switch 5 to off position (i.e., away from numbers), then set other switches as specified by applicable Program Specifica-tion Sheet for your software configuration.

3.5 Description of VLA Process for ARGUS Only During the VLA process, the Main Optical Sensors and the Side-Looking Sensors (SLS) are adjusted. Before the card is inserted dur-ing the VLA, the Currency Validator adjusts the SLS. This part of the process starts when the Red Status LED is illuminated and remains on for approximately one-quarter (0.25) second. When the Status LED goes off, the SLS adjustment process is underway. This occurs for 1 to 5 seconds, but typically is performed in about 1 second. At the end of the SLS adjustment, the Status LED will either:

• Illuminate and remain on, indicating the SLS adjustment com-pleted successfully, the settings were stored in non-volatile memory, and the Currency Validator is ready to accept the VLA card for Main Optical Sensor adjustment, or

• Blink rapidly three times repeatedly, indicating that the SLS ad-justment failed. Should the adjustment fail, the Currency Validator will not accept the VLA card to finish the adjustment process.

While the VLA card is in the currency channel, the brightness of the emitters and the sensitivities of the detectors are adjusted. If a prob-lem occurs during the adjustment (inability to adjust correctly), the Currency Validator will eject the VLA Card – the Status LED will blink rapidly three times (repeatedly) to indicate the failure. However, if the adjustment is successful, the settings will be stored in non-volatile memory.

3.6 Precautions The quality of the VLA Card will affect the quality of the adjustment. When not in use, the card should be kept in an envelope and stored in a cool, dry environment. If the card becomes soiled or physically dam-aged (e.g., creas ed, perforated, bent, etc.), replace it with a new one.

4. FUNCTIONAL TEST The Functional Test is performed to ensure that the Currency Valida-tor is operational and can accept bills. For this test, select two bills representative of in-circulation quality (i.e., non-mint), for each denomination supported by the program. To pass this test, the Currency Validator should accept both bills within three insertion attempts.

4.1 Procedure

1. Obtain two bills, of each denomination (in-circulation quality [i.e., non-mint and without holes, tears or tape]), supported by the program.

2. Starting with the lowest denomination, insert the bills one after another, in a single direction. If unit fails this test, then call for service (Section 6); otherwise, perform the Service Acceptance Test (Section 5).

5. SERVICE ACCEPTANCE TEST When the Service Acceptance Test (SAT) is performed, the service technician can determine if the Currency Validator is operating at a satisfactory bill acceptance rate. For this test, the following criteria are used:

• Eight bills of currency representative of the in-circulation quality (i.e., non-mint and without holes, tears or tape), of each de-nomination supported by the program will be used.

• Bills will be arranged so that their orientation is the same throughout each group of insertions.

• For the first group of inserted bills, bills will be inserted once, one at a time, in a single direction.

• The test will be repeated for each of the other denominations and directions supported by the program.

If more than two bills, of any denomination, are rejected regardless of insertion direction, then the Currency Validator has failed this test (call for service).

5.1 Procedure

1. Obtain eight bills, of each denomination, supported by the pro-gram.

2. Starting with the lowest denomination, insert the first group of bills once, one at a time, in a single direction. If more than two bills are rejected, obtain another set of bills and then repeat this test.

3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for all directions and denominations sup-ported by the program; if unit fails this test, call for service (Section 6).
