    my father was a mechanic for a racing team and my mother worked for a wallpaper business, which meant my weekends were often spent redecorating, or working on cars, boats or the house. when i was growing up i was fascinated by the effort that goes into creating something of quality. as i grew older my love of sailing came to the fore, and i spent more time building boats and redesigning sails. my passion for design never wavered and i always had an idea that i would return to working in design in this current form.

    when opening vela, i wanted to ensure that i could create pieces of the highest quality and to support local production. our Queensland workshop employs a team of 20 talented craftsmen and we can deliver in four to six weeks.

    at present our focus is on vela in woollahra, and upholding our ethos of quality and short lead times. However a Brisbane showroom would be a natural fit as it is close to our workshop in Queensland.

    y style is contemporary classic, which means our interiors are timeless and have the ability to evolve. we also call it “foundation decorating”, which provides good, strong bones and foundations for a house or room. this means high-quality furniture – sofas, curtains, furniture and flooring that will last. i also like to use pieces

    of furniture from the clients’ own collections, which means it is their house and has their own personal touch.

    i draw inspiration often from social media, but also from interior magazines, books and travel. i also have friends like anna spiro, charlotte coote and others within the design industry whom i talk to, and we share our loves, suppliers and new products. i do find those personal friendships and collaborations inspiring.

    i use fabric as my starting point on a new commission. sometimes i remember a fabric i think would be perfect and other times i search until i find it. i work from that one fabric, adding layer upon layer, and use this as my guide for each room. the house also needs to flow and i often use a subtle repetition of a certain colour to help with the flow.

    we have just launched our lifestyle brand bragg&co, which we are very excited about. our first product is a range of beautiful coloured ceramic lamps that are available in 12 colours and three shapes. this collection will evolve, as will our range of products. we will also introduce a range of furniture in 2018.

    Melbourne-based interior designer Adelaide Bragg starts with fabric when working on a new project, building layers and colours to create a flow from room to room

    memories of the fibro shack holidays of the past are fading. Luxury is what’s demanded these days, no matter what the beach.

    Some say Sydney’s palm beach and melbourne’s portsea are old hat, others claim noosa and byron bay are way too crowded. but most Australians – and certainly the rich and famous – have historically enjoyed frolicking in the waves around our coastline. The richest also own on the foreshore.

    A minimalist, architect-designed waterfront at curlewis, outside of melbourne on corio bay, may look like a futuristic render but marino builders constructed the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home with walls of sliding glass about a decade ago. The home sits on a 2ha parcel and has direct access to a sandy beach. There’s a championship tennis court, self-contained guest accommodation and an infinity edge pool.

    jeremy Fox at RT Edgar recently sold the home for $5.6 million on behalf of Aaron kanat, the former managing director of Hugo boss. The buyer was an executive with nAb.

    It was built around the same time as cunana, across the bay at merricks, on the mornington peninsula. The deluxe box-like design of that home was no doubt influenced by the owner having held a senior position at a luxury hotel and resort group for many years. The three glass sides offer views of the ocean, vineyards and rolling hills.

    beach houses have evolved considerably over the years, from rustic to the new wave of ultra luxury, from the quintessential cottages our grandparents secured on pristine waters to contemporary masterpieces.

    house,” the owner once said. “we let the light in, but you can still hear the wind whistle enough to soothe you to sleep. It’s not so much state-of-the-art, more of a state of grace.”

    The white House sits a few houses down from the byron bay record breaker, a record that has stood since 2006. Sydney developer danny Goldberg paid $16 million for wategos House, on 1500 sq m.

    The priciest nSw beach home has been at palm beach, where the 1920s ocean Road beach bungalow kalua fetched $22 million in 2012 when businessman Ian joye sold it to retired car dealer Laurie Sutton. The Hordern family reputedly sent their architect to Hawaii to copy the dillingham plantation residence before building the home.

    In Victoria, the $26 million portsea mansion Ilyuka held the state record for six years before a recent sale in Toorak (see story page 34). The luxury home, sold by computershare co-founder michele o'Halloran to bRw Rich Lister john Higgins, has direct access to point king beach.

    In Queensland, melbourne millionaire toy manufacturer manny Stul paid the top price last year when he bought the mermaid beach trophy home of former billabong director Scott perrin for $25 million.

    The dearest beach house at the moment is tennis legend pat Rafter’s opulent Sunshine coast home. Tom offermann and Eric Seetoo are asking offers over $18 million for the 2010-built, seven- bedroom U-shaped home designed by john burgess around a central infinity pool.

    Queensland Sotheby’s agent Simon j. cowan says a great beach house has plenty of open plan living space, with large doors opening out to big deck space. “The liberal use of louvres and shutters is important,” he says. “For the flooring, timber floors or tiles and kyoya carpets and mats.” He says it’s important that beach houses have versatile rooms that can be used for other purposes.

    cowan is marketing a home in Far north Queensland that also goes by the name The white House. A key difference is its position.Located at mission beach, it sits on an absolute beachfront 810sq m parcel with nothing but tropical gardens and a palm-tree lined border separating it from the pristine white sand.

    Renowned Sunshine coast designer Stephen kidd created the home. It features vast open spaces that allow in the ocean breeze to come in from the ocean. broad verandahs and cantilevered columns sit under a dramatic skillion roofline.

    This white House has five bedrooms, four Italian limestone bathrooms, and a living and dining area that overlooks the private heated pool terrace. The asking price is $3.2 million.

    Homes fronting the 6km mission beach stretch of sand come with direct views out to dunk Island, where mount kut-Tay rises out of the coral Sea. Last month the trophy home known as kut-Tay at South mission beach sold for $1.795 million. The home sits in the gated Lugger bay estate designed by architect chris Vandyke on a vast 3777sq m parcel. The three-level, four-bedroom home was built from local timbers.

    cowan suggests that mission beach, between Townsville and cairns, is a little like byron bay was 30 years ago, describing it as a “quiet hideaway”.

    “It’s a quiet, relaxed location that has a lot going for it – the long beach, the close tropical rainforest, the resort on dunk Island for a sunset drink... ” he says.

    mission beach attracted singer Grace jones. when she visited Australia in 2008, she stayed at Altitude one40, a hilltop home just north of mission beach that comes with its own private helipad.

    Ease of access, the prices now being paid, and changes in employment and lifestyle have made beach homes more than the lock-up seasonal homes of the past.

    back in the ’60s, Sydney architect brian mazlin adapted the style that became known as mid-century modern, which was eminently suited to the evolution of the beach house. He built a classic beach house in the idyllic pearl beach, a small hamlet between the sea and the bush on the nSw central coast.

    Evoking california’s case Study Houses experimental program, the 1963 home received a restoration by Tom Ferguson’s TFAd in 2010. Floor-to-ceiling glass blends mazlin’s early vision – for his sister's holiday home – and TFAd’s contemporary design. Its recent marketing through marcus Lloyd-jones at the modern House agency pegged the home as a “pure Australian beach house”.

    “pearl beach House speaks of the landscape and a simpler era,” Lloyd jones says. The elevated linear box set amid eucalypts and angophoras was priced at $2.6 million before its recent sale. Last traded for $1.52 million in 2007 when bought by Sydney creative director Tim dyroff, the Green point Road home has 126sq m of internal space.

    Simple in plan and execution, the home has a post and beam structure, with a verandah-wrapped elevated platform offering views along the beach. As mazlin says, true beach houses draw you again and again towards the sea.

    concrete more than timber, with wide verandahs, floor-to-ceiling glass doors and outdoor entertaining terraces that front the beach are essential inclusions during the construction phase.

    The white House at byron bay, overlooking the secluded wategos beach, is the epitome of a classic beach house. Set on the exclusive, although non-beachfront, marine parade, The white House has been designed to frame the expansive ocean views from its elevated north-facing location.

    Four of the five bedrooms have ocean views, while the hub of the home is the second-level open plan living and dining area which opens out to a large ocean-facing entertaining deck. The top floor of the striking tri-level home is occupied by the master retreat, which has its own ensuite and private balcony, also facing the beach.

    byron bay property Sales agent jeremy bennett is marketing the home with an $8.9 million price tag. It cost $5.5 million in 2009 when the Arnott family acquired it from the founder of Sausage Software, Steve outtrim, who had paid $2.2 million for it in 2000.

    The house has been rented by the likes of kate moss and Elle macpherson, who paid $14,000 a week for the privilege – not that it’s ostentatious.

    pittwater’s prestige property market recently saw the sale of one of its most impressive trophy homes. cooinda, set on Avalon’s exclusive Stokes point, sold for close to $13 million.

    offered by LJ Hooker mona Vale selling agent Lachlan Elder, it stands as pittwater’s highest sale since 2003.

    cooinda’s buyer, builder Robert Yazbek, has signalled that he will use it as his weekender. but Elder notes that in the current digital age weekends are getting much longer for his prestige buyers: “The old Friday night to Sunday afternoon weekenders are becoming Thursday to Tuesday nowadays – and why not, I say.”

    Looking out to palm beach and beyond towards Lion Island, the five-bedroom home has been transformed by architect Rosalie Stollery since it traded for $6.5 million in 2006.

    Stollery says the design emerged from the location itself, where water laps over sandstone and against the sandstone sea wall. The elements were borrowed and extended into the house. ponds encircle the home, a huge wet edge pool appears to flow into pittwater and the house sits on a sandstone podium.

    The sloping 1630sq m parcel leads down to a 30m frontage with a sandy beachfront, boatshed and sheltered deep-water berthing.

    Elder says top-end buyers look for aspect, access, quality, privacy, value and boating facilities. The sellers had kept a 20.3m boat, choosing sailing over the surf.

    Shacks no more. The unsophisticated pittwater of the past is fast fading, though a remaining Riverview Road, Avalon, cottage is being marketed as a rare opportunity due to its prized 1160sq m parcel.

    Riverview Road had the first hint of a mega-mansion transformation in the 60s when a vast home designed by douglas Snelling, one of the most accomplished interpreters of california modern design, was built for the late office construction tycoon Arthur Little. The Tiki-style home is now up for sale at $13 million through Ray white agent noel nicholson.

    The home was first sold in 1993 at $2 million and most recently sold for $9.65 million in 2006. Set in tropical gardens on a 4200sq m parcel, it has a billiard room with bar opening to a central terrace with pool that overlooks the water. There’s also a 3000-bottle cellar.
