The purpose of this annual report is to inform you of the challenges we’ve faced and the successes we’ve earned during this past fiscal year.

During the past year, Mansfield University was accepted for membership in the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), lending great credibility to our claim as Pennsylvania’s premier public liberal arts institution. Mansfield also earned a place among the nation’s “Colleges of Distinction,” and was ranked among the top 15 most affordable small colleges in the northeast by bestvalueschools.com. We implemented the new Tuition Enhanced Award for Merit (TEAM) scholarship program, which has already attracted many top academic students from within Pennsylvania and from across the United States and internationally.

We continue to face challenges, including the shrinking demographic of high school graduates, the seemingly ever-rising cost to attend college, and cuts in funding, but programs such as TEAM and others in development, coupled with an invigorated strategic marketing focus, are intended to address those challenges and enable Mansfield to flourish.

Guided by our strategic plan, MU2020, Mansfield University is on a path that will allow us to meet the needs of our current and future students. It continues to be my honor to serve my alma mater, its students, faculty, staff and alumni as we chart that course together.

u The Transition Office, responsible for New Student Orientation, has collaborated with the on- campus PSECU E-Center to sponsor Orientation Ambassador shirts, Orientation promotional items and the Orientation Handbook, The Beacon, for a total of $7,500 in financial support. The partnership brings exciting opportunities to incoming students.u The Mansfield Auxiliary Corporation (MAC) successfully partnered with MU

to negotiate an extension of earlier lending arrangements with the US Department of Agriculture. The arrangements for both phases of new housing are among the first in the nation for the USDA related to collegiate housing programs.

u Dr. Adam Brennan, Professor of Music, served as principal percussionist with the Endless Mountain Music Festival in July 2014.u The Kelchner Fitness Center hosted a

Tabata Bootcamp Training Programing that certified 10 participants, including students, alumni and community members. u MU’s Human Resources Department

co-hosted the “Believe in Yourself ” event with Judi Brayer, Associate Director of Programming & Student Staff Development, which had 60 attendees on October 14, 2014.u The Student Activities office presented a

multi-media lecture by Maci Bookout from the MTV Teen Mom television show on the topic “The Struggles Of A Teen Mom and Beyond.” The October 16, 2014, lecture was filmed by MTV and a segment from the MU taping aired on national television in the Spring of 2015.

u Dr. Mary Daly, Professor of Social Work, was awarded the national Phi Alpha Honor Society Advisor of the Year Award at the annual program meeting of the Council on Social Work Education held in Tampa, FL, on October 25, 2014. Her nomination was submitted by Social Work student, Sarah Rava.u On October 27, 2014, the Career Center hosted the

annual Professional Networking and Etiquette Dinner. Twenty-two students had the opportunity to network with 12 table hosts, composed of local community members, alumni, and MU staff. The event provided students with an opportunity to engage in networking opportunities with professionals and learn about dining etiquette in a comfortable and educational environment.u Music students Heath DeGaramo, Lucas Lourenco, Ian MacDonald, Luis Felipe Silva, and Deanna Yoder were winners at the

National Association of Teachers of Singing Allegheny Mountain Chapter Student Auditions at Messiah College on November 1, 2014. Christine Masucci, Victoria Nance, and James Scarantino were also Semifinalists. u The Panhellenic Council sponsored the Fall 2014 Risk Management Program, “Alcohol and You!” for approximately 100

sorority women participants.u Alan Zellner, Social Equity & Multicultural Affairs Officer, and 22

students attended the 28th Annual Robert D. Lynch Student Leadership Development Institute in Lancaster on November 7 - 9, 2014. u Track and Field student athlete, Charlsie Bowen, Elementary

Education, was named ECAC Division II Rookie of the Week for her impressive college debut at the Brockport Early Season Invitational on December 11, 2014. u Music student, Tom Fish, was awarded the prize of first runner-up in

the College Solo and Ensemble Competition hosted by the 198th Army Band in Rochester, NY, on November 15, 2014.u Matthew Romanauski, Nursing, was elected as the Secretary/Treasurer

of the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP). u Cross Country student athlete,

Destiny Foster, English/Art Design, earned NCAA All-Region honors for her performance at the 2014 NCAA Atlantic Region Championships on November 22, 2014. Destiny finished 14th with a time of 23:11.1 on the 6K course.u Fourteen Sprint Football players were named All-CSFL at the conclusion of the season:

4 first team, 6 second team, and 5 honorable mention recipients. u Kayla Grunza, Psychology, and Jessie Swingle, Early Childhood/Special Education, were

selected Second Team All-PSAC Field Hockey at the conclusion of the season. Kayla was also named Synapse Sports Second Team All-American and Second Team All-ECAC.

u Christine Shegan, Chief of Campus Police, was approved by the Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission as the Director of the Municipal Police Academy at Mansfield University on December 19, 2014.u Women’s Basketball student-athlete, Rebecca Evans, Early Childhood/Special Education,

earned both PSAC East Freshman of the Week and ECAC Co-Freshman of the Week honors on December 22, 2014. u Men’s Basketball student-athlete, Charles Pemberton, Biology, earned both PSAC East

Player of the Week and Basketball ECAC Player of the Week honors on January 5, 2015. He also earned back-to-back PSAC Player of the Week honors for the weeks of February 16, 2015 and February 23, 2015. Charles concluded the season with Second Team All-PSAC honors.u Dr. Peggy Dettwiler, Professor of

Music, served as the Artistic Director of the ninth annual Invitational Festival sponsored by Performing Arts Educators (PAE), a non-profit educational organization, held in Carnegie Hall on January 17, 2015. The sold-out finale

featured more than 400 singers from 9 high school choirs; seven of the high school choir conductors were MU alumni. u Ruth Hermansen, Associate Director of Student Retention, attended

“Leaders in the 21st Century” on January 23, 2015.u In February 2015, Dr. Alissa Rose, Professor of Music, was

appointed the Pennsylvania Regional Governor for the National Association of Teachers of Singing.u Women’s Basketball student-athlete, Brielle Kelly, earned both PSAC East Freshman of the

Week and ECAC Division II Rookie of the Week honors on February 2, 2015, and February 9, 2015. Brielle concluded her season being named ECAC Division II Co-Rookie of the Year.

u Dr. Rebecca Dodson-Webster, Professor of Music, was invited to perform and judge collegiate solo and orchestral audition competitions at the International Horn Society Southeast Horn Workshop in Baton Rouge, LA, on March 5-8, 2015. A member of both the Northeast and Southeast Boards of Directors and the Pennsylvania State Representative of the Society, Dr. Dodson-Webster accompanied MU Music students Dylan Krall, Rachael Rice, Benjamin Wagner, and Megan Warriner, who participated in clinics and competed in the competitions.u After a concert in Anchorage in March 2015, Dr. Joseph Murphy,

Professor of Music, has now performed in all 50 US states. His achievement was featured in local newspapers as well as nationally in USA Today.

u All eight MU sororities and fraternities competed in a wide variety of activities as part of Greek Week 2015 which was held April 20-26, 2015. Awards were given to ASA and PSK as Greek Week winners, Suzanne Adams (AST) and Mason Maye (STG) as Greek Leaders of the Year, and Kaitlyn Gross (ASA) and Ben Ireland (PSK) as Greek Woman/Man of the Year. Alumnus advisor, Mr. Larry Mansfield (’83), was also recognized for the numerous contributions he made to the MU Greek Life community. u Four Mansfield University Swimmers qualified for the PSAC Championships. Abigail Zdancewicz, Nursing; Amanda

Ernst, Biology; Constance Medura, Medical Laboratory Sciences; and Hilary Feudale, Chemistry, qualified in their respective events in February 2015.

u Basketball student-athlete, Joe Bell, Criminal Justice Administration, was named First Team All-PSAC.u Softball student-athlete, Ashley Inman, Elementary Education, returned to the mound

for the Spring 2015 season following brain surgery in August 2014 to remove a clot. Ashley’s story was featured on the NCAA and MU Athletics websites as well as local TV media. u The MU Brass Band was awarded the second place trophy in the third section of the

North American Brass Band Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on March 14, 2015. The band competed with adult, non-student bands from across the country and missed the championship trophy by only .3 of a point. This was the first contest of any kind for this band, now in its ninth year of existence. u Sophomore tenor Micah Neiss, Music Education, was a semi-finalist in

two categories at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Eastern Region Student Auditions in Princeton, NJ, on March 20-22, 2015.u Men’s Track student-athlete, Benjamin Drexler, Accounting, was selected to attend the NCAA

Leadership Forum on April 9-12, 2015.u Baseball pitcher, Tommy Alexander, Outdoor Recreation

Leadership, was named PSAC East Pitcher of the Week on April 13, 2015. He also earned Second Team All-PSAC East honors at the conclusion of the season. u The Kelchner Fitness Center hosted an American

Mountain Guide Climbing Wall Certification Program at the on-site climbing wall. Several people, including students, faculty, and the Director of the Fitness Center, Amy DeLozier, were certified as climbing wall instructors at this event.

u Baseball student-athlete, Westyn Baylor, Business Management, was named PSAC East Co-Athlete of the Week on April 20, 2015. He was also named First Team All-PSAC East at the conclusion of the season. u Twenty-four MU psychology majors were inducted into Psi Chi, the

International Psychology Honor Society, on April 23, 2015. It was the largest class inducted since the chapter was founded in 1973. u Baseball student-athlete, Anthony Renz, Electronic Media, was named to

the First Team All-PSAC East, the NCBWA Second Team All-Atlantic Region at third base, and Second Team Daktronics All-Atlantic Region honors.u Baseball student-athlete, Zachary Sacoman, Organizational

Communication, earned Second Team All-PSAC East honors at the conclusion of the season. u Fitness Center Director, Amy DeLozier, appeared in a fitness blog on May

1, 2015, about taking the American Mountain Guide Association certification.u Psychology students, Chelsey and Katlyn Gavin, attended the NEW

Leadership Pennsylvania Program at the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University on May 31-June 5, 2015.u The MU Bass Fishing Team of Alec Engleman/Matt Novitski qualified for

the 2014-2015 FLW Outdoors National Championship in Lake Murray, SC, in April 2015. Bass Fishing Teams Ryan Fluharty/Josh Grassi and Alec Engleman/Bryan Rupp qualified for the next Conference Championship in September 2015 for a chance to qualify for the National Championship. u Riley Thomas, English, and Kayla Hackett, Business Administration,

attended the 27th Annual PASSHE Undergraduate Women’s Leadership Institute at the McKeever Environmental Learning Center in Sandy Lake, PA, on June 6-10, 2015. They were selected to participate in the Institute by the President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) and the Office of Student Life. u The Department of Education partnered with

Northern Tioga School District to offer the Summer Leadership Academy (SLA) in June 2015. Many faculty, staff, administration members, students, and SLA alumni served as staff and/or presenters. u The Orientation Office applied

for and received MU’s first NUFP summer intern through the national organization, NASPA. This program gives fellows an opportunity to gain insight into the fields of higher education and student affairs through a campus- based experience.

u MU raised over $10,000 for the Al Dalmolen Scholarship fund for Political Science in record time and the first scholarship was awarded in the Spring 2015.u MU’s Human Resources Department hosted a two-part series of performance

management sessions. A total of 47 employees attended the four sessions held over a two-week span in July 2014.u Dr. Jeanne Kagle, Professor of Biology, received a grant from the National Science

Foundation that allowed 5 MU and 5 Corning Community College students to participate in a Genomics Workshop at Cornell University.u Dr. Nanci Werner-Burke, Professor of Education & Special Education, was an

invited presenter in July 2014 at the SREB High Schools That Work conference in Nashville, TN.u Dr. Jannis Floyd and Jesus Lucero, Professors of Education & Special Education,

presented “Effective Practices for Teaching Children from Diverse Ethnic and Linguistic Backgrounds” at the Division for International Special Education and Services Conference at the University of Miho in Braga, Portugal, on July 15, 2014.u Nichole Lefelhoc, Director of the Career Center, was quoted in an article titled “Times

Are a Changin’ for College Career Services” on StudentAdvisor.com on August 5, 2014. u Dr. Jeff Bosworth, Professor of Political Science, was featured in an article regarding

the State of US Foreign Policy on Politix, an interactive political news and discussion website, on September 6, 2014. u Dr. Jeff Bosworth, Professor of Political Science, was a guest on Smart Talk on WITF-

FM on September 7, 2014, to discuss President Obama and overseas hot-spots. u President Fran Hendricks’s essay “Nation of Heroes,” commemorating the 13th

anniversary of September 11th, was published locally by the Wellsboro Gazette and nationally on FOXNews.com.u Dr. Karen Guenther, Professor of History; Dr. Janice Purk, Professor of Sociology;

and Nicholas Andre, Instructional Designer; co-presented a session on “Using Technology to Enhance Student Learning in Online Courses: Lecture Videos and Poll Everywhere (Poll Ev)” at the PASSHE Academic Innovation Conference hosted by Shippensburg University on October 17, 2014.

u Classrooms in the Patterson Building of the Guthrie Sayre Campus received a technology upgrade. In conjunction with new instructor computer systems and laptop hookups, the classrooms have become more usable, allowing faculty focus to be directed toward instruction and learning outcomes. u Kim Slusser, Director of the Learning Center, was invited by

the Ely Library Diversity Committee to co-present “Activating Allies: How Characters in LGBTQ Literature Inspire Action” on October 17, 2014.u Dr. Lynne Hammann, Professor of Education & Special

Education, presented a poster entitled “Design the ‘Write’ Task: Using Text Structure Strategies to Foster 21st Century Thinking” at the 44th Annual Conference of the International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning held in Denver, CO, on October 17-19, 2014. She also received an award for her contributions and service as a member of the ISETL Board. Her research study, “Self-Regulation in Academic Writing Tasks,” is one of the journal’s Top 20 Downloads of All Time. u Social Work faculty from MU and Lock Haven presented

“Advancing Rural Social Work Programs: Strengths and Challenges” at the Annual Meeting of the Council on Social Work Education in Tampa, FL, on October 24, 2014.

u In October 2014, State Farm Corporation representatives made their annual visit to recruit students for internships and full-time employment. The team conducted 21 mock interviews and 14 internship interviews with students in the Computer Science Program; two students accepted returning internship offers for summer 2015; 3 accepted first-time internship offers for summer 2015; and six accepted full-time offers beginning in summer 2015.u The Swim Team was named a 2014 CSCAA Fall Scholar All-American Team during the Fall 2014 semester. This award is

given to teams with a 3.0 or higher GPA for the semester. u Fourteen students, accompanied by 3 faculty members, traveled to Keene, NH, to present their work at COPLAC’s Northeast

Regional Undergraduate Research Conference on November 7-8, 2014.u Dr. Nanci Werner-Burke, Professor of Education & Special

Education, presented at the National Council of Teachers of English Conference in November 2014. She also presented at the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts Conference. u Dr. Karen Guenther, Professor of History, presented a paper titled

“Flight 93 National Memorial: Commemorating 9/11’s Impact on Pennsylvania” at the Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical Association on November 6-8, 2014. She is also the PHA Business Secretary and presented reports and coordinated table staffing.

u Kim Slusser, Director of the Learning Center, was an invited roundtable presenter at the National Council of Teachers of English national convention on November 20-23, 2014. The session title was “Fighting Story with Story: Our Role in Advocating for Our Youth’s Silenced Realities.”u The second edition of the book Social Work Documentation: A Guide to Strengthening Your Case Recording

by Dr. Nancy Sidell, Professor of Social Work, was accepted for publication by NASW Press in December 2014.u Drs. Mary Daly and John Mansfield, Professors of Social Work, collaborated on the article, “A Study of

Social Network’s Sites Relevance and Ethics Involving Undergraduate Students,” which was published in The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work in December 2014. u The Department of Academic and Human Development was invited to publish a column in the Journal

of Research and Teaching in Developmental Education. The column, “Innov8 & Collabor8,” was authored on a rotating schedule by the 8 AHD faculty members. The first column appeared in the Spring 2015 issue.u The Women’s Soccer Team earned NSCAA Team Academic Award for posting a team GPA over 3.0.u The Women’s Cross Country Team was named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for posting a

cumulative GPA over 3.0. Sarah Morin, Dietetics and Nutrition, and Men’s Cross County student athlete, Shakim Blackwell, Mathematics/Secondary Education, earned All-Academic individual honors for posting a cumulative GPA over 3.25 while finishing among the top 30 percent at the regional championship. u Sixteen Field Hockey student-athletes were named to the NFHCA All-Academic Team for earning a

3.30 or higher cumulative GPA. Julie Cacace, Dietetics and Sports Nutrition; Brianna Hathaway, Early Childhood/Special Education; and Laura Lawson, Biology; were also recognized as NFHCA Scholars of

Distinction for earning at 3.90 or higher cumulative GPA.u MU became the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges’ (COPLAC) 29th member on

January 23, 2015.u In Spring 2015, a cohort of five students was identified by the MU Career Center to

participate in a pilot program that supported intentional career development through 4 phases of professional growth: Explore, Connect, Experience, and Lead. Each phase allowed students to focus on steps that will assist them in preparing for their futures in their chosen field. u The Department of Health Sciences received a Highmark Foundation Academic Healthcare Program Development Grant in

the amount of $14,958 to purchase online teaching and learning equipment for the new Nutrition MS Program. The program was approved in January 2015 and began admitting students in Fall 2015.u Christina Fry, Director of Educational Field Experiences, presented a professional development session for new teachers in the

Bath, NY, Central School District on February 11, 2015.u Dr. Janice Purk, Professor of Sociology, presented a research paper at the Eastern

Sociological Society Meetings on February 26, 2014, entitled “Are They Learning? Am I Making a Change in Attitudes? Online versus In classroom Course Presentation of Social Problems.”u Dr. Gretchen Sechrist, Professor of Psychology; Erin Ratliff, Psychology; and Kylie

Smith, Psychology, presented a poster entitled “The Effects of Empathy and Social Exclusion on Prosocial Behavior” at the annual Eastern Psychological Association Conference in Philadelphia, PA, on March 5-7, 2014.

u Dr. Mary Daly, Professor of Social Work, presented “Should We Educate Students About Privacy Management on Social Media Sites?” at the national conference for the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors in Kansas City, MO, on March 6, 2015.

u Dr. Jeffrey Jacobsen, Professor of Music, along with 4 Music students, participated in sessions of the American String Teacher’s Association National Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, on March 18-21, 2015. u Dr. Mary Daly, Professor of Social Work, and Social Work students Sadye Carn, Ashleigh

Durning, Ryan Masti, and Lisa Walker presented “Learning How to Advocate for Change in Rural Communities” at the Annual Conference of the Institute for Human Services held in Corning, NY, on March 18, 2015. u The MU Career Center hosted an IBM Internship Information Session on March 26, 2015,

in collaboration with Academic Affairs and Amy O’Rourke (‘77). Twenty-three students with majors in Graphic Design, Business, Computer Science, English, and Communication attended.u Deb Rotella, Professor of Academic

& Human Development, and Kim Slusser, Director of the Learning Center, attended and presented at Pennsylvania’s National Association for Multicultural Education conference at Keystone College on April 11, 2015. The presentation,

“Critical Reading and Dialogic Learning: Uniting Students, Faculty, and Community Members Through College Book Clubs,” highlighted the MU Gateway Program’s success with book clubs as a way to involve community members and to engage students in critical literacy experiences.u Nichole Lefelhoc, Director of the Career Center, and Andee Dunham, Associate Director for

Student Life and Student Transition, co-presented “Addressing Growing Concerns of Graduates’ Preparedness to Enter the Workforce via a two-day Professional Conference” at the Innovations in Student Career Development Symposium at Shippensburg University on April 17, 2015. Amber Cloke, Assistant Director of the Career Center, also presented “The Journey: Four Phases of Preparing our Students for Their Future.”u Brittney Mink, Criminal Justice Administration; Devona Jock, Community Health Education; and Sarah Fluck, Sociology and

Anthropology; participated in the roundtable discussion “Red Flags and Book Bags: A Public Awareness Campaign at Mansfield University” at the Gender Matters Conference held in Chicago, IL, on April 18, 2015. The panel was moderated by Stephanie Allen, Associate Director of Multicultural & Equity Services. u Dr. Elaine Farkas, Professor of Physics, received a PASSHE Innovations Grant to enhance the curriculum and the assessment

techniques used in the physics for life sciences sequence courses.

u Dr. Lee Stocks, Professor of Geosciences, and Geoscience student, Nathan Harpster, presented a joint student-faculty project poster entitled “Geophysical and Geospatial Mapping of Tioga County, PA, Cemeteries” at the annual Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL, on April 24, 2015. u MU’s Human Resources Department spearheaded

the organization of the Professional Development Fund, which awarded over $45,000. Twelve PDF recipients presented oral and visual presentations, as well as musical and theater demonstrations, at the first MU Professional Development Symposium. u Four History students presented papers at the Eastern

Pennsylvania Regional Meeting of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society on May 18, 2015. Two faculty members also chaired sessions and served as judges for the paper prize competition. u Over the course of six weeks, four Chemistry students

under the direction of MU Chemistry Professors Shaker Ramasamy and Michele Conrad, along with Paul Wendel (Otterbein University), performed a water quality study of home wells in Tioga County. This study involved students collecting well water samples from 82 homes across Tioga County and subsequently analyzing the water at no cost to the homeowners. Funding for the study was provided by the Tioga County Board of Commissioners’ ACT 13 Fund.u Dr. Tiffany Welch, Professor of Social Work, completed her dissertation defense and was awarded a Doctorate in Social

Work from Capella University in June 2015. u Fifty-three members of the MU Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Peggy Dettwiler, Director of Choral Activities, won 3 Gold Medals at the largest choral competition in the world, the World Choir Games, in Riga, Latvia. Over 500 choirs from 74 countries on 5 continents participated over the 10-day festival in July 2014. MU had the best performance of any American university. Prior to arriving in Riga, the Concert Choir performed four full concerts in Germany, Poland, and Lithuania.u Dr. Guanghui Zhao, Associate Professor & Vice-Dean of the Department of

Foreign Languages, at China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing, China, was a visiting scholar in the Department of English and Modern Languages for the Fall 2014 semester.

u Tanya Tews, Music Technologies, and Jamie Salmen, Communications, each spent a semester in Jena, Germany, as part of MU’s direct exchange program with the Friedrich-Schiller-Universitat which has been active since 2000. u The Office of International Students hosted an International Picnic on Labor Day to learn about and celebrate a national holiday. u MU International Students prepared bi-weekly dinners

for their peers in the residence hall during the Fall 2014 semester. u MU’s Marching Band, The Spirit and The Pride of

Pennsylvania, performed at the Annual Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown on September 28, 2014. The festival included 25 bands performing to a crowd of 15,000 spectators. u A composition by Dr. Andrew Walters, Professor of Music,

titled Pushing Buttons for Alto Saxophone and 2-Channel Fixed Media was performed at the 57th National Conference of the College Music Society in St. Louis, MO, on October 31, 2014, by saxophonist Eric Honour.u Dr. Peggy Dettwiler, Professor of Music, rehearsed and conducted

International Sash Ceremony to celebrate students’ native countries on April 20, 2015. u In May 2015, the Human Resources Department hosted two

sessions of Chair Yoga led by a local certified yoga instructor who provided an overview of breathing, stretching and de-stressing exercises that can be performed from an office chair.u By invitation of Mark Records of Clarence, NY, and

u Frank Crofchick, Community Conduct Officer and Service Coordinator, began a new community service and leadership program for incoming first year students, called the 101st, named for the Civil War volunteers from Tioga County (later nicknamed the Mountaineers). Over 30 students took advantage of the opportunity to come to campus early to develop leadership skills and perform community service at a state park. “Before we were Mountaineers, we were the 101st!”u MU staff and students participated in a Community

Service Project at Martha Lloyd Community Services on July 16, 2015, where they assisted with landscaping and the installation of new flooring.u Dr. Nathan Rinnert, Professor of Music, served

as the Intern Coordinator for the Endless Mountain Music Festival from July 21 through August 8, 2014, in addition to playing in the ensemble. Each year the festival hosts 12-15 college-age interns on string, wind, and percussion instruments. Interns at the 2014 festival

included MU students Sara Petokas (horn), Kyle Rusk (piano), Alyssa Wroblewski (viola), Adi Sagar

(percussion), and Chris Medycki (percussion). Amanda Ritter, Music Business, also interned with

the management component of the festival. u Dr. Eaine Farkas, Professor of Physics,

traveled to each of the Bradford County public libraries in July 2014 to deliver a science-themed demonstration in order to promote the national Collaborative Summer Library Program’s reading theme, “Boom Fizz Read.” In total, 8 libraries were visited with roughly 30 first through fourth graders at each location.

u Dr. Peggy Dettwiler, Professor of Music, presented two interest sessions at the 10th World Choral Symposium in Seoul, Korea, in August 2014. She sold every MU DVD and CD brought to Korea. u MU approved preferential course scheduling for former military

personnel who were discharged or released from service under conditions other than dishonorable. As a military-friendly institution, MU expanded the veteran definition to include active military service members as well as dependents receiving veteran’s educational benefits under the GI Bill. The objective for the Course Scheduling Preference for Veteran Student Act Policy is to offer the opportunity for military personnel to register for future terms during the priority registration period defined in the course registration schedule.

u Under the leadership of Master’s candidate, Brooke Klett, the Department of Education and Special Education participated in America Reads, a reading program established under President Clinton. MU students spent nearly 1,200 hours working with elementary students who struggle with reading.u United Campus Ministry students collected the most change for the MU Foundation’s 2nd Annual Piggy Bank Campaign for

Student Giving. u On September 4, 2014, Galeton Area School District students in grades 7-12 participated in a hands-on workshop by

Christina Fry, Director of Field Experience, about the value of an education. u The Senior Transitions Conference organized by the MU Career Center and Office of Student Transition was highlighted in an

article titled “Conference Prepares Seniors for Careers after Graduation” in the September 2014 issue of Campus Career Counselor.u President Fran Hendricks was the speaker at the Patriot Day Ceremony at the Mansfield Veterans Park.u Alumni Relations, Marketing, and CT Staff collaborated to develop a fully functional Alumni House Room Reservation

website. Many alumni who utilize the accommodations are returning to serve as campus/classroom guest speakers, student mentors, or volunteers. u The MU Women’s Center and Multicultural Affairs organized the Red Flag Campaign, a campus wide public awareness

campaign designed to foster dialogue about dating violence, which included film screenings, workshops, and advocacy training in October 2014.

u Pepsi Company sponsored a bouldering competition at the Kelchner Fitness Center for the climbing community on October 10, 2014.u MU Athletics celebrated Military Appreciation Day at sporting events on October 18, 2014. Sprint

Football and Field Hockey competed on Van Norman Field where booths and other activities were set up to honor the military.u For the first time in over 20 years, the ECAC conducted a Division II Men’s and Women’s Cross

Country Championship on October 26, 2014. MU hosted the event at Lamb’s Creek with 9 men’s and women’s teams competing. Destiny Foster, English/Art Design, and Destiny Parks, Biology, earned All-ECAC honors. u The MU Brass Band performed a concert at the VA hospital in Bath, NY, in recognition of

Veteran’s Day. President Fran Hendricks also spoke at the event on November 11, 2014. u Counseling Center faculty Jolene Meisner and Karen

Crisp along with Michelle Holbein, Human Resources Department, developed and held MU’s first Mental Health Wellness Fair which included over 20 stations on November 12, 2014. u The Human Resources Department organized a Giving Tree for

employees and students to assist area children. Hats, mittens, and scarves were collected and donated to Tioga County Human Services and distributed to area children in need throughout November 2014. u Women’s Basketball conducted a “Fight Diabetes” game on

November 15, 2014, for awareness and to honor team member, Alyssa DeRichie, Biology. u The Human Resources Department launched The Retiree Connection,

a newsletter designed to help retirees stay connected to the university and to one another. The first issue was distributed in November 2014 to 236 retirees.

u MU hosted a “Know Your Numbers” wellness event for 140 university and Commonwealth employees in the area.

u The MU Concert Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Adam Brennan, Professor of Music, completed their annual recruitment tour through the Rochester, NY, area in November 2014. Forty-eight undergraduate members of the Wind Ensemble performed for 8 schools and were seen and heard by over 2,000 high school aged students.u The Student Life Division along with Animal Care Sanctuary provided

Chillin’ with the Canines to students during both finals weeks to help them de-stress and enjoy the company of both canines and felines.u The Kelchner Fitness Center hosted over 250 participants at two free community

events in January 2015. Families, members of the local YMCA, and anyone who wanted to try the climbing wall were invited to attend the first event. The second event was held for more experienced climbers.

u Scott DiMarco, Director of Library/Information Resources, accepted an invitation in January 2015 from the Encyclopedia editor to write an entry in the Sea in the World History on the Blue Riband Prize. “The Sea in World History: Exploration, Travel, and Trade,” a two-volume reference is scheduled for publication by ABC-CLIO in 2016. Organized chronologically and geographically, it will cover information from antiquity to the present.u The student organization of Pennsylvania State Education Association

(SPSEA), under the direction Samantha Boner, Education, raised over $2,000 through a Scholastic Book Fair in the Spring 2015. The money was used to purchase books for Elkland Head Start and McClure Elementary School in Philadelphia.u The Mansfield Auxiliary Corporation officers presented President

Fran Hendricks with $285,000 in support of the $1,000 New Housing Incentive Awards for students living in the new student residence halls. The three year total of such support has now approached $700,000.u The Kelchner Fitness Center hosted a Fitness Expo on January 24,

2015, with 50 attendees. The Expo was an opportunity to try short demonstrations of group fitness classes, exercises, and meet instructors.u Social Justice and Unity Week, comprised of events focusing on

social justice and current affairs, was held by the Women’s Center and Multicultural Affairs on January 25-Febraury 1, 2015. Programs included a lecture by Dr. Gretchen Sechrist, Professor of Psychology, a student led discussion, a film screening, and the annual Operation Ambition conference.u A senior course in the MU Social Work Program offered during

the Spring 2015 semester challenged student teams to partner with a community agency for a semester-long project. Combining classroom learning with engagement in the local community helped students to reflect on the complex health and social problems that they will encounter in their professional Social Work lives.u Dr. Christopher Bridges, Vice President for Student Affairs &

Enrollment Management, served as a juror at the Pennsylvania Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition on February 5, 2015. This prestigious program is run by the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division.u Dr. Sheryl Monkelien, Professor of Music, served as a guest conductor

for the 2015 Baltimore County Public School All Honors Jazz Choir on February 7, 2015. u Healthy Relationships Week which featured events focusing on building and maintaining healthy relationships, including

u An after-school tutoring program at Rock L. Butler Middle School in Wellsboro was facilitated by Dr. Michele Whitecraft’s Introduction to Education students in Spring 2015. Due to the tutoring efforts of these education majors, local middle- school students gained significant academic growth over the course of this semester. u Members of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of The Kappa Phi Club, a Christian

sisterhood which is rooted in the United Methodist tradition, managed the entire worship service at the First United Methodist Church in Mansfield on February 22, 2015. u The Kelchner Fitness Center hosted roller skating events for families, members

of the local YMCA, the community, and the Dirt Road Dears Roller Derby Team with over 150 participants on February 22, 2015. Another 150 participants attended college night for WNTE, Dirt Road Dears, and students on February 23, 2015. u The MU Career Center collaborated with the Guthrie Sayre Campus to host a

17, 2015, at the Kelchner Fitness Center where 36 teams and 412 participants raised more than $21,000. u MU Greeks participated in “The BIG Event,” a community service

event, on April 18, 2015. u The Office of Greek Life hosted Blood Drives in November 2014

Rollman, and Tori Carter completed a semester-long project to increase volunteerism at Broad Acres Nursing Home in Wellsboro as part of Dr. Mary Daly’s Communities and Organizations course. u Women’s Softball hosted “Strike Out T1D” day on April 23,

2015, for awareness and to honor Rachel Sterner, Biology, who battles Type 1 Diabetes.u The Kelchner Fitness Center and the Student Dietetics

Association hosted a 5K run on campus to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Over 60 people participated in the run on April 25, 2015. u The Human Resources Department hosted two flu shot clinics

where licensed pharmacists were on site to administer flu shots to 150 MU employees and their family members.

u Dr. Tiffany Welch, Professor of Social Work, served as the Vice President for the National Alliance for Mental Illness’ (NAMI) Tioga County chapter. She organized a free fall festival to the community which included 10 MU student volunteers. She also organized the annual NAMI walk with 4 Social Work students which raised $1,400.u Steve Plesac, Director of Student Activities and Programming, presented as part of a

professional panel on the topic of “How Entertainment Buyers Buy Talent”at the Association of Entertainment Professionals (AEP) Worldwide Conference in Las Vegas, NV, on June 9, 2015. His presentation was also highlighted in American Entertainment Magazine. u MU’s annual Alumni Golf Outing was held at Corey Creek Golf Club on June 12, 2015,

with 80 participating golfers. Over $5,000 was raised for athletic scholarships.u The Women’s Soccer Team conducted a Tennis Ball Race which raised money for the

Mansfield Area United Fund, the Mansfield Food Pantry and the Tioga County Branch of the YMCA on June 25, 2015.u The Library and Information Resources Division created a partnership agreement, called

MATS, for shared services between MU and PASSHE Universities to catalog materials. As of June 30, 2015, MATS had signed contracts from 2 PASSHE Universities.

u The Individual Mentoring Program Assisting College Transition (IMPACT), administered by the Office of Retention, had 79 Mentors and 59 Mentees committed to the program.

u The MU Concert Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Adam Brennan, Professor of Music, garnered honors for their recordings with the National Academy of Recording Arts with eligibility in seven categories during the 2014-2015 Grammy Nomination Cycle, including two nominations for best orchestral performance. For the second time, Brennan earned eligibility in the category of Best Contemporary Composition. u MU was listed as the second most affordable accredited

online distance education programs in PA by onlinecolleges.net. u MU’s Facebook page was ranked in the top 50 most likeable College/University

Facebook pages. u MU’s Human Resources Department organized the annual Summer Picnic which

approximately 200 employees and student workers attended on July 29, 2014.u President Fran Hendricks accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of ALS on

September 9, 2014.u The Student Life and Transition Office increased orientation participation for

incoming students to over 97%. Orientation has been proven to increase the success of students and retention rates. New Student Welcome has also grown to capture over 60% of the MU student body. u The second annual LUMA event was held on September 20, 2014. Coinciding

with Family & Friends Weekend, the event featured entertainment, tailgate activities, a Student Club and Organization Fair, athletic events and fireworks. PASSHE Chancellor, Frank Brogan, conducted the ceremonial “flipping of the switch.” u Mike Maniscalco,

Communications/Broadcasting, set MU Sprint Football’s single season passing record with 1,801 yards and 16 touchdowns as well as the career passing record with 3,072 yards and 26 touchdowns.

u Men’s Basketball student-athlete, Joe Bell, Criminal Justice Administration, set the single season scoring record on January 28, 2015, against Kutztown University. He also made his

professional basketball debut on February 22, 2015, as a member of the Schuylkill Firedogs of the Eastern Basketball Alliance.

u MU baseball student-athlete, Anthony Renz, was signed by the Las Vegas Train Robbers of the Pecos League.

u The Women’s Center and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center hosted Open Houses on March 4, 2015.

u The Human Resources Department celebrated National Employee Appreciation Day on March 6, 2015.

u MU Softball celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Helen D. Lutes Field. u MU Outdoor Track & Field hosted a home meet for the first time in over

10 years while competing on the new throwing area located at Russell Field on April 18, 2015.

u The MU Municipal Police Academy began the first full-time academy since the Fall 2013 on May 19, 2015.u Eighty-five families attended Accepted Student Day in May 2015 hosted

by the Office of Admissions and coordinated by Jessica Kerwin, Admissions Counselor. Over 65 current students volunteered to help make the day a success. u The Student Activities Office, in collaboration with The MU Student

Government Association, presented Spring Fling 2015 which included a major all-day/all-night outdoor music festival featuring the headline music artists The All-American Rejects along with six additional national artists and two MU student bands on May 2, 2015. u Following the May graduation ceremony, the MU Mountaineer athletes

started a new tradition with a group photo at midfield.

Annual Service Recognition Program

u The Mansfield University Foundation, Inc. celebrated 40 years of serving MU through their Board of Directors by providing $540,000 in scholarship support. Additionally, alumni and friends donated more than $950,000 through the annual fund and established 13 new Scholarship and Endowed Funds to assist students in pursuing their educational goals.u The Human Resources Department hosted the annual Service Recognition

Program honoring employees and retirees for their service milestones. Forty-one employees and 19 retirees were recognized who have collectively served for a total of 710 years and 437 years respectively, for a grand total of 1,147 years of combined service. u Cindy Kerr, Institutional Research Statistician, was awarded the MU Employee

of the Year Award and the Psychology Department received the Spotlight Award for Department of the Year at the Service Recognition Program on April 7, 2015. u MU achieved its highest wellness program participation rate to date when 90%

of employees who are enrolled in the PASSHE health insurance plan participated in and met the requirements for the annual wellness program; this is the second highest participation rate among the 14 schools in the PA State System. Analytics showed that MU employees rank better in many wellness categories as compared to other State System employees, as well as showed significant improvements in employee health from the previous year.u An annual Alumni Engagement Plan was created to communicate the mission and purpose of the Alumni Relations Office

who support and advance the university’s mission and initiatives by providing and promoting programs and services to alumni, students and friends to establish, grow, and maintain their interest, involvement, enjoyment, loyalty and financial support.

u The Human Resources Department sponsored a campus wide Guess the Date, Turkey Gobble Off, and Holiday Door Decorating contests. u To celebrate MU’s roughly 13% of married

alumni couples, the MU Foundation launched and hosted Mansfield Mergers, a vow renewal ceremony during Alumni Weekend. Forty-four couples participated in front of more than 100 observers in North Hall’s Atrium.

The Presidential Coin for Excellence was conceived by Mansfield University President Fran Hendricks to recognize individuals for extraordinary contributions to the university. The recipient does not have to be an alum, but rather a

person who has helped advance the university through charitable gifts, volunteer efforts, leadership activities or outstanding efforts as an employee. The Mansfield University Creed of Character, Scholarship, Culture and Service is also used as a guideline in selecting recipients.

The symbols on the coin were selected by President Hendricks to represent historical highlights and other distinctive aspects of the university. It was designed by Mansfield University graphic artist Andy Worthington.
