NAPLAN takes place in May each year and forms an important part of our overall picture on how students are performing in the key areas of Literacy and Numeracy. We can better target additional support for students once we develop a clear picture of their strengths and areas for future improvement. NAPLAN is also used by the State and Federal governments to target support to schools as well as helping them form a picture of the overall performance of schools. The NAPLAN tests will take place during next week. Increasingly, school funding is linked to NAPLAN outcomes. Education Week is also upon us, commencing on May 21st and lasting all week. Our program for Education Week is also attached to this Newsletter. Parents are advised to take the opportunity to visit the school during Education Week and to also attend some of the activities. Students started at the Lord’s ground and walked the outskirts of town to eventually find their way to the Botanical Gardens where they enjoyed a sausage sizzle lunch. Next Monday, May 14th is a Curriculum Day where all staff will be attending the Mansfield Secondary College working with other staff from the college as well as staff from Merrijig and Jamieson schools. The presenter on the day is Jo Lange who has worked extensively in schools in the area of student wellbeing. A brief overview of Jo’s work is below for any interested parents. Jo has been an educator for over 20 years, working as a teacher with children, young people at risk, adults and in community education in the schools and TAFE sectors. Her focus is on effective interpersonal communication dealing positively with difficult behaviour, whether it comes from 5, 15 or 50 year olds. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The next few weeks promise to be quite busy for all schools in Victoria, and our school is no exception. Next Monday, May 14th is a Curriculum Day where all staff will be attending the Mansfield Secondary College working with other staff from the college as well as staff from Merrijig and Jamieson schools. who took time to come along and support the event by supervising or cooking or simply being there. Money raised will go toward a specific purpose which School Council will determine in coming weeks. The Life Ed will also be visiting Mansfield Primary in the coming weeks. The Life Ed van has been a working part of the Victorian schooling system for many years now and is proudly supported by the Starlight Foundation who provide much need support enabling “the Van”, as we know it, to visit many schools throughout Victoria. Early Birds

Some children are arriving at school very early when the schoolyard is not supervised by a qualified staff member. Parents are reminded that the school yard is supervised from 8:45am onwards. It is not advisable to allow your child to be at school too early. Buses commence arriving at approximately 8:25a.m onwards and the school yard is supervised by a staff member from 8:45a.m. School Uniform

Parents are asked to support our school uniform policy which is also attached to this newsletter. In recent weeks we have had a number of students at school who are not in correct school uniform. Baseball caps are not part of school uniform nor are “leg ins”. Tights worn under a dress are acceptable. A regular feature of our Newsletter is the Parenting Ideas section. This week’s article has a focus on Mothers and the wonderful job they do in raising our children. Don’t forget to ring your own Mum and thank her for everything she has done for you throughout your life. No matter how you’ve turned out and no matter what you have done in your life, it wasn’t without significant effort and support from your Mum. I hope you enjoy this week‘s article on Mums. In closing, a special thanks to all our great Mums who continually help and

support our children here at MPS.

CAMPS 2012

The Year 3/4 Camp at Lake Nillahcootie Camp is fast approaching commencing Wednesday 30th May to Friday 1st June, 2012. All information including permission and medical forms have been sent home with children this week. Please note that payment and forms are required by Friday 18th

May.

The Year 5/6 Camp will be held in Term 4 from Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th November. Thank you to the families who have paid their $100 deposit towards this camp. All families have now been invoiced with a second instalment of $80. With the total amount of the camp expected to be $280—$300. SKATEBOARDING ISSUES

It has been brought to our attention that some students have been riding skateboards in the main street in a dangerous manner. Parents need to be aware of the potential danger.

WALKATHON

On Friday we had the school annual walkathon. We do it for the school fundraising. The whole school walked down to the botanical gardens and had a sausage sizzle. Then we played some games on the oval. Then we walked back to school. Thank you to all the parent helpers who cooked the sausages and walked with us. Ned Angliss (Media Team) At this stage $2,500 has been raised from the Walkathon. Please continue to send any extra money that has been collected. Thank you.

CROSS COUNTRY

Congratulations to Grade 3 to 6 students who all participated in our District Cross Country at the Botanic Park yesterday. For some the challenge was to finish the course while others were aiming to win their division. Effort, sportsmanship and representing our school are much more important than results and I saw many fantastic efforts from our students. Well done to those students who finished in the top 8 in their race and will now represent our school at the Zone Cross Country and a special mention to Colby Croxford-Demasi, Brooke Mullins and Britney Allen who won their races.

ARTS COUNCIL SPECIAL NOMINATION

Our school community has nominated Mrs Marlene Bingham for their Three Faces Portrait Subject for 2012. Mrs Bingham is one of six nominations who will attend “The Reveal” tomorrow evening to announce the chosen individual. We wish Mrs Bingham all the best for her nomination.

LONG SERVICE LEAVE

We wish our wonderful Assistant Principal, Ms Hazel Bell, a wonderful time as she takes long service leave to travel the roads of Australia on an adventure. We hope she has a safe and well earned rest and we look forward to her return in Term 3.

We will miss you Ms Bell!!

BASIC BELIEF

Mansfield Primary School believes that the wearing of school uniform:

• promotes a collective and individual sense of pride in students, team spirit, and a sense of

belonging to the school

• enhances the safety and security of students by providing student identification both within

and outside the school

• provides a leveling of dress standard with little or no competition between peer groups over

clothing worn at school.

It is the policy of School Council that all students in Years Prep- 6 shall wear uniform and that the

uniform dress code will not discriminate, either directly or indirectly against any student on the

basis of sex, race, ethnic group, nationality, religious beliefs, colour or disability.

IMPLEMETATIO

1. Information on the school uniform and policy will be circulated to parents through the

School Parent Information booklet, newsletter and on enrolment.

2. The School uniform consists of plain navy blue pants (no jeans), blue checked summer

dresses, blue windcheater, red short or long sleeved polo shirt, blue shorts, blue bomber

jacket, “Team Mansfield”/navy blue vests, blue broad brimmed hat or navy blue winter

school beanie, comfortable shoes (no thongs or open toed sandals) and appropriate jewellery.

3. Where appropriate, the school dress code applies during school hours, while travelling to and

from school, and when students are on school excursions

4. The only headwear that is acceptable is Sunsmart hats consistent with our Sunsmart policy.

They must be worn outside in terms 1 & 4.

5. School Council require the Principal be responsible for implementation of the uniform dress

code in manner consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.

6. Uniforms can be purchased from the Uniform Shop on Thursday mornings. Second hand

uniforms are also available.

7. Parents seeking exemptions to the Uniform dress code due to religious beliefs, ethnic or

cultural background, student disability, health condition or economic hardship must apply in

writing the Principal.

This policy was ratified by the Mansfield Primary School Council on – 13/7/2009
