    WHAT IS ROBONAUT ?

Robonaut is a different class of robot than other current

    space faring robots.

Robonaut is a robot designed to assist humans in spaceexploration missions.

The core idea behind the Robonaut series of robots is to

have a humanoid machine to work along-side astronauts.

ROBONAUT USES A FLEXIBLE, FIVE-FINGERED HAND

Robonaut's hands might have better dexterity than a human

handed inside of a space suit

    ARMS- Robonaut has two arms

designed to be equivalent to human

    strength,scale, reach and dexterity.

    HEAD-The Robonaut head has two

eyes and a neck with two degrees of

freedom-- the ability to nod up and

down and shake left and right.

    TELEPRESENCE

    Telepresence is the use of

    virtual reality hardware. This

allows the human to operate the

    robonauts movement by moving

    their own bodies.

    Telepresence allows the

    robonaut to perform movements

such as using scissors to cut, tying a knot and using power

    tools.

    WHAT ROBONAUTS ARE MADE OF

R2s head houses not its brain, but

    its vision equipment.

Behind R2s visor are four visible light cameras

two to provide stereo vision for the robot and its

    operators, and two auxiliary cameras.

A fifth infrared camera is housed in the

mouth area for depth perception.R2 has 3 degrees of

    freedom in its neck,

    allowing it to look

    left, right, up, or down.

Each arm boasts 7 degrees of

freedom and the strength to hold 20

pounds in any pose in Earths gravity.

R2 thinks with its stomach literally. With

its head full of cameras, the only place with

enough room for a brain is the robots torso.

Robonaut 2s hands have 12degrees of freedom

4 degrees of freedom in the thumb, 3 degrees

of freedom each in the index nd middle fingers,

and 1 each in the ring and pinky fingers Eachfin er has a ras in force of 5 ounds.

    ROBONAUT 2 R(2)

    The second Robonaut series (R2A

and R2B) was a joint effort

    between NASA and General Motors.

The R2 system is capable ofmoving its arms up to 2 m/s and has a

    40 lb payload capacity.

Its hands have a grasping force of

    roughly 5 lbs per finger.

All the numerous sensors in the

    robot number over 350.

    R2s can work autonomously, together

    or alongside humans.

    FUTUREPLANS

Near the end of 2009/ early 2010 a proposed mission called

Project M was announced by JSC that if approved would land

a R2 robot on the moon within 1000 days.

    EARTH APPLICATIONS

The R2 has wide applications in space and on Earth.

NASAplans to use robonauts to expand capabilities for

    construction and discovery in space.

For GM, R2 represents a step toward safer vehicle

assembly plants and greater protection for employees.

    ADVANTAGES OF USING ROBOTS

    Tasks are done quicker.

Humans are not placed in danger.

Robots do not need to be brought back to earth, which is

    easier.

Robots do not require life support (food and energy).

Robots can go places humans cannot.

Sending robots into space instead of humans is easier on the

    economy.

    DISADVANTAGES OF ROBOTS

Robots have not been designed to install and fix things that

    humans can.

Robots cannot handle problems that they are not able to see,

    where as humans can.

Robots cannot perform extensive research that humans can.

Robots can malfunction on individual missions and humans

will not be there to fix the problem.

    FAST FACTS

Designed to do task a human would do in space

    Can be controlled remotely

Helmet resembles that of the Star Wars bounty hunterBoba Fett

This is because both Robonaut's and Boba Fett's designers were

inspired by the appearance of the Roman centurion helmet.
