Oranges and Lemons

We now have both an orange tree and a lemon tree in the garden. The lemon tree was planted earlier this year but the orange tree was planted on 25th September 2018 and is located just to the left of the entrance gates.

The orange tree is a mature Valencia and was obtained from a block a little further along Downey Drive that was being cleared for a building development. David Vicary, under the supervision of Kingsley Waterhouse, pruned branches from the tree to make it easier to remove.

Eric Goddard was able to retrieve a substantial number of the ripe oranges from the cut off branches and these were placed in the crib room for members to take.

Thanks to Ken and Alan, the two contractors clearing the block, who kindly assisted with removing the tree and placing it on Kingsley’s trailer for transporting it the short distance to the Shed garden.

The hole for the tree was dug out by Kingsley, David, Jack (Jock) and his friend who were assisted at times by Greg Abbott and Eric Goddard.

After pruning of the tree roots, it was placed in the hole with some of the compost (moved from the compost heap by Jock and his friend). Sand and more compost were then placed onto the roots and watered in.

A final pruning of the tree was carried out by Kingsley, and to stop water loss Eric painted the cut ends of the branches and the damaged parts of the trunk with acrylic paint.

The tree was and is being given a lot of water and only time will tell if it will survive the move.

Management of Shed External Projects

Shed External Projects are those that members work on for people external to the shed. These projects usually involve a monetary payment to cover the cost of materials and labour. They are registered in the Shed Project Management System which is managed by Allan Waugh. A Work Request Form must be completed for all Shed External Projects to provide details of the project. The Work Request Form must be submitted to the Allan who will register the project and assign it to a member to work on it. The assigned person will be responsible for running the project and if necessary for organising others to help.

A folder containing the details of the Shed External Projects is available on the Crib Room table and is updated by Allan on a regular basis. There is a separate sheet for each member listing the project(s) assigned to them. Members who have been or are involved in Shed External Projects are asked to review their sheet, ensure that the details are correct and up to date and, where necessary, consult with Allan Waugh so that he can update the system.

Boiling Water Heater Timer

The Boiling Water Heater is connected through a timer which automatically switches the heater ON at 08.30 and OFF at 17.30 each weekday. On some occasions, when the shed is attended outside of these hours, it may be necessary to override the automatic controls. Shed Leaders are regularly finding the timer with incorrect settings because the controls have not been set back to auto or have been set incorrectly.

Members should note that it is not necessary to unplug the heater and use another power socket. The automatic control can be overridden by using the mode control button on the timer. Pressing the mode button moves the timer back and forward between the OFF, AUTO, and ON modes (ie ON > AUTO > OFF > AUTO > ON). The timer remains in the selected mode until the mode button is pressed again.

If the mode is selected to AUTO and the heater is OFF, to override the automatic controls just use the

Page 4: Manning Men’s Shed Newsletter · colorbond fence at the SE end of the Shed additional Storage Racks are being installed. New gates have been installed to secure this area. Please

Mode button to select the mode to ON.

If the mode is selected to ON press Mode button to select the OFF mode.

If the mode is selected to OFF press the Mode button to select the ON mode.

If the automatic control has been overridden at any time, at the end of the session and before leaving and locking the Shed, the appropriate ON or OFF mode for the time of day must be selected and then the AUTO mode must be selected. This will ensure that the automatic switching is correct.

If the timer is found to not be in the correct state (the most common occurrence is that the heater does not switch ON during a weekday or is left ON after a weekend sessions) then the Mode button should be pressed to select the required state ie ON or OFF) and the AUTO mode must be selected.

Please refer to the instruction sheet near the timer for further information

Holiday Spreadsheet

Greg Abbott is maintaining a spreadsheet to record when shed members will be away.

Please let Greg know your plans so he can keep the spreadsheet up to date.

Blue Plastic Bins

Bob Loss has brought some more of the blue plastic 50 litre bins to the shed. The bins have a black lid held in place by a large metal clip.

These bins are available to members for a $5 donation. Please speak to Allan Waugh, Kingsley Waterhouse or the Shed Session Leader if you want one.

Shed Safety

Machine Safety Information Sheets

All the Large Machines in the Shed have or will have a Machinery Safety Information Sheet attached to them.

The sheets are laminated into plastic covers and attached using cable ties.

If a Machinery Safety Information Sheet becomes separated from a machine the operator must immediately act to re-attach the sheet.

Each Machine has been assessed for the level of risk and has been assigned one of four levels as follows:

1. Level 1 - Danger of Causing Injuries 2. Level 2 - High Danger of Causing Injuries 3. Level 3 - Very High Danger of Causing

Serious Injuries 4. Level 4 - Extremely High Danger of

Causing Severe Injuries

For each level of risk only the relevant Approved Operator, who must have the appropriate level of training in the use of the machines, is permitted to use the machine.

Members should consult the safety procedures sheets that are located on the window to the left of the door to the Supervisors Office.

The Machinery Safety Information has a standardised format which shows

- The assigned Level of Risk

- The Name of the machine

- That only Approved Operators are allowed to use the machine.

- The requirement to check General Safety Rules before operating the machine.

- A Table showing the Risks involved in using the machine and the Safety Controls that must be implemented to minimise the risk.

- A step by step process for using the machine.

Please ensure that you follow these safety procedures.

Shed Projects

Bunning Sausage Sizzle

The Shed held another fund-raising sausage sizzle at Bunnings Carousel on Saturday 6th October 2018. After expenses about $1320 was raised for shed funds.

Thanks to Kingsley Waterhouse, Ron Tompkin, John Paisley, Alan Brown, Alan Naber, Jim Forster, Martin Lawton, Arnold Godfrey, Michael Hatsiyiannakis, Greg Abbott, Dave Winslade, Paul Moran, James Turner, Graeme Hudson, Paul Vassis, and Eric Goddard who assisted at some time during the day.

Rotary Club Motor Show

The Rotary Club of Como held its annual car show at Wesley College on Sunday 7th October 2018. Members set up a small stall for selling toys made in the Shed. Members who attended indicated that the crowd was well down on last year and a total of $239 was raised for shed funds.

Thanks to John Paisley, Don Cameron, Ramon Baro, and Graeme Hudson, who assisted during the day.

Ramon’s Plastic Recycling Project

Ramon Baro was hard at work during the last two weeks of September to get his Plastic Recycling Machine ready for the demonstration held on Monday 1st October 2018 at the Shed.

The demonstration was attended by about 25 schoolchildren, including some from Indonesia, who were attending the 3-day Millennium Kids MK21 UNconference for Future Thinkers being held in Perth from the 1st to the 3rd October 2018. The children also had a conducted tour of the Shed. The Chief Executive of Millennium Kids, Catrina-Luz Aniere, accompanied the children.

Millennium Kids is a local youth led organization, based in Yokine, which aims to develop local, regional and international partnerships which empower young people to explore, identify and address environmental issues and make change in their communities. It helps young people aged 10-25 years co-designing practical action projects in their local, regional and global communities.

The Plastics Recycling Machine is installed on one of the mesh trolleys and consists of a shredder, a heater to melt the shredded plastic and form it into a solid piece, and a heated extruder to inject hot melted plastic into moulds.

Chair Refurbishment

Two more dining chairs have been brought into the shed for refurbish. As these chairs had not had any major work done on them before they were brought in they will only need to be pulled apart and then re- glued with new dowels. Eric Goddard will be undertaking this work. Helpers are welcome.

Outdoor Bench for Metalworkers

Ron Tompkin and Peter Repton, assisted by Eric Goddard, have constructed a large wooden bench for use by the metal workshop. The bench will be located within the secure area near the SE corner of the shed.

It was constructed from a large jarrah benchtop that Ron was storing off site, and from some of the timber we recovered when the patio at the Como Senior High School was replaced during th time we operated from there. The timber from the patio was used to build a large six-legged frame on which the bench top sits.

Members Projects

Dale’s Drum Stand

New Member Dale Sniffen is “beating” a path to the shed to make a base for his Nagado Daiko drum.

Dale and the Drum Base

Matts Tables

Matt McWhirter started making two tables a while back before he helped Eric Goddard with Mrs Whytes chairs.

Matt checks out his tables prior to varnishing

His table tops use small wooden floor boards set in a herring bone style. He has fitted conventionally shaped legs and is now putting finishing touches to the table top which will have a clear PVA varnish

Alans Tables

Alan Naber’s son owns the Moore and Moore Coffee Shop in Fremantle and he favours items of unusual and rustic design. Alan has been busy making some tables with a difference. The one shown below uses an old bicycle frame as the legs

Previous designs included one using two motor cycle engines as a central leg. However, Alan is now working on one that has wooden legs, albeit unusually shaped legs.
