MANLY WEST MINI MATTERS WEEK 8 TERM 3 Wednesday 7th September 2016
Principal’s Message:
The Production, ‘A Manly West Tale’
The production will be performed next Monday 12th September to Thursday evening 15th September. The matinees will begin at 1.30pm and the evening performances will begin at 6pm. The students have done a wonderful job rehearsing this week. Thank you to all the parents who have been involved
behind the scenes with backdrops, costumes, makeup and a myriad of other tasks. The hall will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week with the organization of the sound system and tiered seating. The morning programs
during the week will continue as usual.
Australian Interschool Titles –Manly West Snow Sports Team
Good luck to all those students who are competing this week in the Australian Interschools Snow Titles. We wish James Ford, Samuel Ford, Emita McCarthy, Toby McIlwaine, Tigri Olofsson, Millie Rundle, Sam Rundle, Clara Wall and Eric Wall all the best for a great experience representing Manly West PS.
Sydney North Athletics Carnival 3-6 Congratulations to all the students who competed at the District last week and also to those students who will now compete in the
Sydney North Athletics Carnival next Monday. Good luck to Ally Bullman, Sophia Addington, Dylan Swanson, Mercy Nathanael, Tylan Black Berryman, Octavia Williams, Amelie Taudien and James Linfield.
After School Care places
Occasionally students are able to obtain places for After School Care because of absences and parents are usually informed by 1pm. We ask
that parents please let the school know as soon as possible so that the office staff members are not attempting to locate students at the end of the day which can lead to unsafe practices.
Student News Congratulations to Daniella Phillips who is representing her club in State Gymnastics on the Floor, Vault, Beam and Bar at Rooty Hill on Saturday 10th September. She is already in Level 4 and has been to State twice for
Level 3 where she was placed 12th and for Level 1, where she was placed 6th. Good luck!
Congratulations to the Production Program
design winners; Orla Beacham, Scarlett Macnicol, Caylea Robinson, Georgia Ball, Ruby Mitford-Burgess and Saxon Macnicol.

new sound system, our next K-2 Assembly will be Friday 16th September.
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2017
If you have a child starting school next year and have not yet completed an
enrolment form, please do so before the end of term. The dates for the
Kindergarten Transition to School program follow.
The Kindergarten Information Evening for parents is on Thursday 27th October from 6pm.
There are two Kindergarten Orientation Days for students:
Orientation One is on Wednesday 2nd November from 9:45 -11am.
Orientation Two is on Tuesday 8th November from 9:45 -11am.
Playground Happenings
Thank you to Ivy Polkinghorne, Camille Hirose, Arran Darling and
Imogen Brown - four committed Year 4 students who set up and pack away
equipment in the Literacy and Numeracy Area on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday of each week. Jumbo versions of games such as snakes and
ladders, noughts and crosses and chess are available to all interested
students.
Thank you also to our many Year 5 Playground Monitors who continue to
organise play equipment on a daily basis for Kindergarten students.
Kindergarten Excursion to the Zoo
Yesterday, K Orange, K Purple, K Silver and K Yellow visited Taronga Zoo to complement their Geography unit,
‘People live in Places’. Students attended a Backyard to Bush workshop entitled ‘Dreaming and Living on the
Land’. K Orange enthusiastically reported the animals they met who were linked to Dreamtime stories. They
were introduced to a baby python called Child Snake who was apparently a cousin of the Rainbow Serpent.
They also met a Green Tree Frog, distant cousin to Tiddalik. K Orange enjoyed visiting the many animals,
including the big owl in the dark house, the Sun Bear being fed peanuts by the zookeeper and the empty
Meerkat enclosure with a screen showing where they were all hiding. The Meerkats had pups that were born
the day before.
Thank you to the many parents and staff, including our university students for your contribution to the day and
to Kindergarten for representing our school so well. K Blue, K Green and K Red will be visiting the zoo
tomorrow, leaving school at 9:30 sharp.

Deputy Principal Report
Manly West Production - ‘A Manly West Tale’
Matinee performances start at 1.30pm. Children will change into their costumes before their
performance and back into school uniform at the end of the performance.
Evening performances begin at 6.00pm and it is anticipated the performance will end around
7.30pm. Parents drop children at their allocated holding room at 5.30pm and BASC Staff will be taking
children to holding classrooms. A Classroom Holding Room Map is attached with the newsletter and is on
the Manly West website. Children wear normal clothes and will change into their costume once they arrive
at school.
Pick Up Details. All children are involved in the finale and teachers will take children back to holding
rooms at the end of the performance. For safety reasons children are to be collected from the holding
classrooms by an adult. It is important that all children are signed off the roll. If your child is being
collected by someone else, other than you, please send in a note with the appropriate details to your
child’s teacher.
The Partners in Learning Parent Survey Closes on Monday 12 September
Thank you to the many parents and carers who have completed the Partners in
Learning Parent Survey. Your feedback will help our school make practical

Lost Property
There are regularly many items of lost property in our lost property tubs,
located outside the Primary DP Office.
Teachers aim to instil the value of ‘taking responsibility for our
belongings’.
We would appreciate your support in helping us to manage the ‘overflowing’
lost property.
Here are some suggestions to help teach your child to care for their own belongings:
Clearly label all items, including lunch boxes, drink bottles and jumpers.
Have a conversation with your child to check they have all their belongings at the end of each day.
Ask your child to take more responsibility for finding any missing items, by asking them to search or help
you search for their belongings.
Rather than buying another lunch box or jumper teach your child the importance of searching for missing
items, such as scanning the playground, looking in their classroom or going
to the lost property tubs.
Thank you to Sofia Davidson’s mother, Kylie for your time in assisting us to
reduce the lost property that accumulates every week.

on the top 6 designs so without further wait, here are the names of
the winning designers: Orla Beacham (1G), Scarlet Macnicol (2N),
Caylea Robinson (2DG), Georgia Ball (3JL), Ruby Mitford-Burgess (5S) and Saxon Macnicol (5P)!

Term Accounts All accounts except those with extra sessions should now be finalised. LATE PAYMENT CHARGES apply for non-payment.
CENTRE NEWS Our Incursion/Enrichment Program continues this week. As a reminder, if at all possible, we would ask
parents to collect their children after 5:30pm on the relevant day. W/C 5/9/16 W/C 12/9/16 K-2 Wednesday – Earth Beats Thursday – Silly Science Club 3/4 Tuesday – 3D Printing Friday – Electronic Tinkering
5/6 Club Thursday – Cupcake Decorating Workshop Monday – Scientifix
Just a few of our other activities this week -
K-2 will be involved in joke books, dream catchers, DIY Where’s Wally Craft, touch footy skills and a game of wizards, giants and elves to name a few of the programmed activities!
In outside activities, 3/4 Club has a range from wide games such as capture the flag and running games such as survivor and bulrush. Also they will continue the time trial obstacle course challenge devised by the children.
Pokemon will take over Club 5/6 with a timed hunt for hidden Pokemon pictures. Also, three of the children will teach others the art of game programming on the computers and there will be a special afternoon tea with cookie cutters used to make fairy bread shapes.
ABSENCES To ensure the safety and welfare of the children in our care, BASC MUST BE NOTIFIED if a child will be absent from a booked session. Non Notification delays our awareness of any legitimate concern for a child’s safety.
Also, whilst looking for children and contacting parents, our Educators are having less time with the children in their care. Messages can be written ahead of time in each room’s ‘Parent Message Book’ or by email
[email protected] . We can be contacted at late notice by phone on 9948 8113. There is a Non-Notification of Absence Charge of $11 (incl GST).
We also need to be informed of both Before School Care and After School Care Absences as early as possible, as there may be parents needing an emergency casual session.
Registering With Us To register your child with us, please visit our centre’s site https://manlywestbasc.hubworks.com.au and click on ‘ENROL’. Enter your child’s details and then click ‘SUBMIT’.
