Should households be restricted to owning only one car? Manly’s Year 8 debating team argued successfully in favour of this idea in a tightly contested regional quarter final against St Ives High School this week. The team spoke with conviction about the environmental impacts on cutting car use and worked hard to rebut the negative team’s assertions that the scheme was impractical and disadvantaged minority groups. Visual Arts Excursions

Year 10 and 11 Visual Arts students viewed a number of exciting exhibitions on Friday 19

October. This included visiting the AGNSW to see the Hermitage and William Kentridge exhibition and the MCA to the David Goldblatt show. The students all appreciated the diversity of the exhibitions which showcased Modern Art, contemporary drawing and video and photography. They are pictured in front of a projection of an artwork from the Hermitage collection.

Year 9 Visual Arts students had an excursion to Sculpture by the Sea on Monday 29 October. The students had the unique experience of viewing site-specific sculptures on the walk from Bondi to Tamarama Beach. There were 107 sculptures from a number of different countries and using a variety of techniques and materials. The students photographed and analysed selected works that will form the basis of inspiration for their own sculptures.

Staff Professional Learning

This week 14 teachers are undertaking the 4-day Basic Intensive Week Choice Theory, Reality Therapy and Lead Management course at Oxford Falls Peace Park. Once they have completed the training, 54 of the current staff will have completed training at this level or beyond. William Glasser’s Choice Theory underpins the wellbeing programs at Manly and the Reality Therapy and Lead Management processes are used in conversations and interviews with students and staff. If you are interested in finding out more about this internal psychology approach to understanding behaviour and a link to Will Smith discussing Fault vs responsibility, go to the William Glasser website page - choice theory.

Selective High School Applications for 2020

Applications for enrolment into selective schools for Year 7, 2020 are now open and will close at 10:00pm on 12 November. This application needs to be submitted for students to be entered into the Selective Schools Placement Test which will be conducted on 14 March 2019. Application forms are available at local Primary schools or from the Department of Education website.

P&C Meeting 31 October

This week’s P&C meeting was different to most in that we had a presentation and a ‘Call to Action’ to rally as a school community to address climate change.

From the level of discussion, the interest and urgency to act are both high and the P&C is strongly urging parents, carers and members of our school community to get involved now to formulate our approach and support initiatives across the school community.

Please watch the video, and if you are ready to opt in, email your contact details to Nigel Howard at [email protected].

Congratulations

During the school holidays Aidan Bennett from Year 11 represented the NSW All Schools cricket team against Queensland. Aidan opened the bowling and took 2 wickets, although a lot of the 3

day match and the entire one day match were abandoned due to the rain.

Aidan is also heading to Armidale in November to represent Sydney North in the NSW Combined High Schools tournament. We would like to wish him every success in this upcoming game and are so proud to have such dedicated students and athletes as part of our senior cohort.

In this regular feature we like to recognize students who have achieved highly in school and community events, competitions and activities. Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic excellence, personal best and giving back to the community deserve to be recognized. Parents are invited to phone or email the school any achievements we may not be aware of for inclusion in The Weekly Pines.

From the Deputies Many of us have personally experienced how a walk outside or a swim in the ocean can shift our mood. This isn’t just anecdotal; most studies agree that children who play outside are smarter, happier, more attentive and less anxious than children who spend more time indoors. Being in nature has also been shown to reduce stress levels. The theories vary as to why and how nature reduces stress, but possible suggestions include that time in nature is often associated with physical activity and sometimes social interaction which can both reduce the stress hormone, cortisol. Recent research has also highlighted that daily exposure to nature increases children’s ability to focus and concentrate and, therefore, enhances their cognitive abilities (including problem-solving and other higher-order thinking skills). Time in nature also helps the brain to release dopamine, the feel-good neurotransmitter. With the weather warming up and the days getting longer we encourage you to spend time in nature with your children. Whether it’s doing the Spit to Manly walk, or having an afternoon swim or surf at one of

our gorgeous beaches, the Northern Beaches has something to suit everyone.

Uniform Focus Group On Wednesday evening, parents and staff met to analyse the findings from the recent survey of the school community and make decisions regarding future uniform expectations. The group examined data drawn from the responses of 395 parents, 274 students and 39 staff (a summary of this data was provided in last week’s issue of The Weekly Pines No.33).

The meeting included discussion about the current uniform options and the need to create a broader selection that allowed for the seasonal needs and personal choices of the students. It was decided that the current catalogue will be revised with the phasing in of some new items next year. Any students who would like to be involved in the design of new items should get in touch with Mr Newcomb.

Year 7 Swim Program The practical sessions for the Year 7 swim program will begin next week (7 November) and run through to Week 9 (12 December). Students will leave school at lunch time to be taken to Dee Why beach by bus and return to school by approximately 2:30pm.

Students will need to bring a hat, swimsuit and or board shorts, towel, shoes or thongs and a drink bottle. Wetsuits are optional. Sea Australia will provide rash shirts for sun protection and identification and are compulsory to wear. It is recommended that students also bring warm clothing to put on once they are out of the water and returning to school. All students are required to apply sunscreen prior to start of session.

Any questions, please speak to Jen Walker or Leanne Low in the PDHPE Department.

Grass Skirts Project Thank you to the members of the NBSC Manly Campus community who donated shoes and sporting equipment to the Grass Skirts Project. The donation was made up of 12 pairs of sporting shoes and various types of sporting equipment. The donations should arrive in Papua New Guinea by November. Invictus Games Student Report

In celebration of a very successful academic year, the Year 10 cohort and a few select students from varying grades strayed from the everyday contests of the Northern Beaches. From across the bridge we admired the accomplishments of over 500 competitors from 18 nations.

After an extremely early start, we streamed into Sydney Olympic Park wherein we listened to two soldiers tell us their own stories of overcoming both the visible and non-visible wounds from battle. To say the least, with an approaching exam season, the talks inspired us to have a greater perspective, work even harder than before and reminded us of how mental health is equally important as one’s individual physical health.

Following this, we walked across the park to an outdoor amphitheatre where we watched a performance by blind musician Lorin Nicholson and grew our awareness on the reality of living with a disability such as a visual impairment.

Next, we entered the athletics stadium to watch the athletics for the rest of the day. We watched many emotive competitions ranging in events from wheelchair racing to visually impaired shot put.

As the day neared its ending, students excitedly claimed to have spotted the faint sight of a noble red-haired figure. We sneakily walked down a little closer. Yet, much to our mild disappointment, it

Constitutional Convention Student report

On Tuesday 30 October, I was lucky enough to attend the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention. Myself along with about 175 other students were selected from all around NSW after application and met at Parliament House to discuss the issue of whether the disqualifications for Members of Parliament as listed in section 44 of the Australian Constitution adequately reflect modern Australian society. The main point that was focused upon was whether people who are dual citizens should be allowed to run for parliament.

We were very privileged to have Anne Twomey Professor of Constitutional Law from the University of Sydney Law School speak to us about section 44 in great detail. Her insights gave us all a much better understanding of the issues we were dealing with. After her speech we separated into group discussions and delved into some really

interesting conversations. The calibre of the other student’s capability to understand and debate such a contentious and complex issue was extremely exciting and I am very glad I had the opportunity to participate.

Near the end of the day, 30 students were elected by their peers to represent NSW as delegates in the National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra in March next year. I was lucky enough to be selected as one of these students and I am beyond thrilled to be representing Manly Campus as well as NSW.

AGM and Term 4 Band meeting Monday 26 November at 8 pm, library. NEW DATE

Come to the AGM to find out what’s happening with our band program and consider joining the friendly and enthusiastic group of 20+ parents who make up the band committee.

The band committee is especially seeking the involvement of parents from the years 7-10 age groups as parents from senior years are moving on.

Helping our bands – a win/win!

• The band program thrives when good people like you help out.

• Helping out is a fun and truly rewarding way to get to know the students, staff and parents.

• There is a role to fit your work hours, skills and interests – some are regular throughout the year, others are short term.

• Most band committee members are working parents so there is no expectation that you are free mid-week. The committee meets one night per term.

• To find our more, email Band President Mel Corner at [email protected]
