Alberta Landfil l Operator Certification
Goal of Program:
Landfill and Composting Facility Operators will increase their knowledge to operate and manage waste management facilities so that:
• Environmental quality will be protected;
• Public health and safety will be protected;
• Regulatory compliance will be enhanced;
• Landfill and composting facilities will be operated effectively;
• Waste reduction and resource conservation objectives are met; and,
• Sites are managed to follow the waste management
hierarchy of reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover.
Alberta Landfill Operator Certification
• All key operating personnel required to have Certificate
• Must have one year experience, be approved and get at least a 70% on exam
• Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
• 3 year renewal
Saskatchewan Landfil l Operator Certification
• Discussion between communities (11 Cities at the table)
• Round table meetings
• Spearheaded by COR
Manitoba Landfill Operator Certification
• Landfill Operator Basic Certification – must be present at all landfills
• Manager of Landfill Operations – must be employed by Class I landfills

How to obtain:• Must be 18 years old and be
employed at a Landfill in Manitoba• Apply to take course and exam • Achieve 70% or greater on the exam• Obtain certificate from SWANA• Renew certificate every 3 years

discipline areas• Apply to take course and exam• Achieve 70% or greater on the exam• Obtain certificate from SWANA• Renew certificate every 3 years

Course provides the information and tools needed to effectively and safely operate a
municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill.

Landfill Operations Basics
• Learn the historical problems associated with improper management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
• Understand characteristics of the MSW stream
• Understand the role sanitary landfills play in the integrated solid waste management system

• Learn about the developmental and operational changes landfills have made to protect the environment
• Learn the historical, current and future roles landfills play in the integrated solid waste management system
• Learn that it is the responsibility of the landfill owners and operators to comply with new regulations
