1. Overview of Institute

The Manitoba Nursing Research Institute (MNRI) was established in October 1985 and is committed to fostering nursing research in Manitoba. The MNRI is supported by the Faculty of Nursing and operates to support and advance the research and scholarly activities of faculty, graduate students and community nurse researchers. The MNRI is located within the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing. In January 2006, the MNRI relocated from the third floor of the Helen Glass Centre to the main floor to increase the visibility of nursing research within the University of Manitoba.

The new location of the MNRI consists of 1,448 square feet of space and features five research offices (rooms 212, 215, 216, 217 and 206). Room 212 is the main office of the MNRI and features a reception area. Research activities of the MNRI are supported by the four workstation Research Assistant office (room 215) that also houses a resource library including journals, books, MNRI reports, and other research and government reports. The other three offices include the

Director’s Office (room 217) and the offices of the Research Associates (room 206 & 216). A display board outside the MNRI features upcoming Nursing Research Seminars and highlights the research activities of faculty members. Staff at the MNRI include the Director (Dr. Maureen Heaman), an Administrative Secretary (Lisa Wolfe-Ulrich from December 2007 to present and Carol Cadigal from March 2007 to October 2007), a Research Associate (Diane Cepanec), a Research Technician (James Plohman from June 2008 to present), a part-time Statistician (Mary Cheang), as well as several undergraduate student Research Assistants. The MNRI fosters the visibility of nursing research, both within the faculty and the broader University and clinical communities. The MNRI promotes and supports research activities of faculty and graduate students by offering a variety of seminars, professional development sessions, networking opportunities and services. The MNRI offers a comprehensive system of support services for research grant development (including pre-review of grants, literature searches and retrieval, assistance with budget development, on-line applications, and CV modules) and research dissemination activities (including assisting with PowerPoint and poster

presentations). The MNRI also provides administrative support for grants and offers workshops on grant writing and development of research skills.

During 2007 and 2008, the MNRI hired and trained a number of undergraduate nursing students as research assistants (RAs). The training they received included: a SPSS workshop, to develop basic skills in using SPSS for quantitative data management and analysis; several literature search workshops, to introduce the students to different search tools in various electronic databases, and to assist them in searching in a more efficient, effective manner; and workshops on using RefWorks and Reference Manager for managing bibliographic references. As a result of their positions, the RAs gained an increased knowledge and understanding of nursing research as well as experience in the research process, including data collection, management, entry, and analysis.

6.2.1 Researcher In Residence 2008 Dr. DiCenso, RN, PhD Professor, Nursing, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario CHSRF/CIHR Chair in Advanced Practice Nursing Director, Ontario Training Centre in Health Services & Policy Research

The Faculty of Nursing was pleased to host Dr. Alba DiCenso from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario as the Dr. H. Glass Researcher in Residence from April 1 – 4, 2008. Dr. DiCenso holds the CHSRF/CIHR Chair in Advanced Practice Nursing and is a Professor in the School of Nursing and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. She is also the Director of the Ontario Training Centre in Health Services and Policy Research. Dr. DiCenso’s mandate during her 10 year Nursing Chair is to increase Canada’s capacity of nurse researchers who will conduct applied research related to advanced practice nursing (APNs) that serves the needs of administrators and policy makers in the health sector. Her primary research area is the introduction and evaluation of advanced practice nurses (including nurse practitioners) in primary and tertiary care settings. Dr. DiCenso is one of the first nursing scholars to advocate and pioneer in the area of evidence-based practice. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. DiCenso was the lead editor of the Evidence-Based Nursing Journal and she is the lead editor of a recent textbook: Evidence-Based Nursing: A guide to Clinical Practice published by Elsevier. Public lectures given by Dr. DiCenso included “Translating Evidence into Practice: Addressing the Challenges” and “Successful Integration of Advanced Practice Nurses into the Canadian Health Care System: Is it Possible?” A workshop for Faculty members was entitled “Supervision with a Mission: How to be an Effective Research Supervisor”. Dr. DiCenso also provided a session on

Advanced Database Searching and hosted a session with graduate students. Additionally, Dr. DiCenso met with faculty members, graduate students, and community nurses in small group discussions and in consultation around a variety of topics of mutual interest.

7.1 Quality Assurance Projects At the request of the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, the MNRI conducts a series of quality assurance projects on an annual basis. During the past year, these projects have included collecting information from current students and graduates as well as employers of nursing graduates. Projects include: • Exit interviews of 2007 graduates of the Faculty of Nursing Graduate Program • Survey of exiting undergraduate students related to their employment status and

preferences • Follow-up survey of graduates from the four year undergraduate program related

to their education and work experiences following graduation • Survey of employers on their perspective on the extent to which new graduates

are prepared to meet each of the entry level competencies defined by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba

8.3 MNRI Research Grants The MNRI offers three research grants: The AManitoba Nursing Research Institute Nursing Research Grant@, the “Fort Garry Branch Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund” and the “Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant for Nurses”.

The Manitoba Nursing Research Institute Nursing Research Grant The Manitoba Nursing Research Institute Nursing Research Grant provides funding for nursing research projects. The Principal Investigator must be a Registered Nurse in Manitoba, although research team members may be from other disciplines. Funding is awarded to a maximum of $4,000 for a one year term. This grant is funded by the MNRI Trust account. 2007 Recipients - Drs. Wendy Fallis, Diana McMillan and Marie Edwards, for their project

entitled, “Napping During Night Shift: Practices, Preferences, and Perceptions of Critical Care Nurses”, $3,766.10. This project was extended to February 2008.

The Fort Garry Branch Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund Nursing research has also benefited from funding by the Fort Garry Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion through the Poppy Trust Fund. The purpose of the grant is to provide support for a nursing research project whose outcome contributes to enhancing care for older adults in Manitoba. Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant for Nurses Ms. Kathleen Ruane established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba to support nursing students’ academic and research objectives. A portion of the annual income from the fund will be used to offer a research grant valued at $3,000 called the Kathleen and Winnifred Ruane Graduate Student Research Grant for Nurses, to support the costs of conducting research for a thesis or dissertation. 2008 Recipients

• Dr. Lesley Degner was the recipient of a National Cancer Institute of Canada's Diamond Jubilee Award.

• Dr. Lesley Degner was the recipient of the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre Palliative Hospice Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented at the 11th Annual Interdisciplinary Approach to Symptom Control, Palliative and Hospice Care in Houston Texas on September 30, 2007.

• Dr. Lesley Degner was the recipient of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncologists 2007 Conference Award of Excellence for outstanding contributions to Psychosocial Oncology.

• Dr. Jo-Ann Sawatzky was the recipient of the Cardiovascular Nursing Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses (CCCN).

• Ms. Verna Pangman, Dr. Christine Ateah, and Dr. Diana Clarke were recipients of the 2008 Excellence in Professional Nursing Award from the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM). This award is given to nurses who exemplify excellence and a high degree of professionalism in nursing practice.

• Dr. Judith Scanlan was the recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award from the College of Registered Nurses (CRNM).

• Dr. Lesley Degner, Dr. Pamela Hawranik, and Dr. Maureen Heaman, were recipients of a Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Centennial Award honoring Canadian registered Nurses. The Centennial Awards signify a celebration of 100 exceptional registered nurses whose personal contributions have made an outstanding and significant impact on the nursing profession.

• Dr. Roberta Woodgate was the recipient of the 2008 Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Nurse to Know Centennial Achievement Award. As part of the Canadian Nurses Association Centennial celebrations this year, the CNA is recognizing 14 “Nurses to Know”. These 14 nurses are recognized for their contributions to the health system and the health of Canadians.

9. Services Provided to Graduate Students The MNRI supports the research and scholarly activities of graduate students in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba, primarily by providing access to research resources and services.

9.1 Data Analysis Support for quantitative data management and analysis is provided to graduate students. This support includes technical assistance and trouble shooting using SPSS for dataset construction, data entry, cleaning, verification and analysis. Graduate students also have access to statistical consultation services through the MNRI. Graduate students who were supported in their data analysis for their thesis projects include:

10. Future Growth of the Institute

Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research Background • The proposal for the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research

(MCNHR) was developed in response to a review of the Manitoba Nursing Research Institute (MNRI) by the Senate Committee on University Research.

• This proposal was developed as a plan to re-organize and revitalize the MNRI, and to comply with the University of Manitoba Policy on Research Centres, Institutes, and Groups.

• The name of the Centre/Institute has been changed to reflect a broader interdisciplinary focus on health research, and to have wider appeal for health care professionals from disciplines other than nursing to become members of the Centre. “Manitoba” is retained in the name because the Centre is envisioned to play a key role in promoting nursing and health research throughout the province.

• The MCNHR will remain based within the Faculty of Nursing.

Procedures and policies pertaining to using MNRI Services for SPSS and Statistical Consultation

SPSS

MNRI support with SPSS is limited to the technical aspects of using SPSS and the support provided is meant to build graduate student capacity in using SPSS for quantitative data analysis. The MNRI provides training (group workshops and one-on-one training) and technical support in using SPSS through its Research Associates.

• The MNRI provides technical assistance and troubleshooting in using SPSS with respect to dataset construction, data entry, data cleaning and verification, data transformation and data analysis.

• Graduate students can purchase data entry services through the MNRI (contact the MNRI for current rates for this service).

Appendix B 

 

• The MNRI will not perform data transformations or data analysis for graduate students as it is expected that graduate students will carry out their own data transformations and analysis.

• Graduate students can request a one-on-one appointment with a MNRI’s Research Associate to assist them in setting up their SPSS dataset, to assist them in data cleaning and to answer technical questions on using SPSS for data transformation and analysis.

• Graduate students should come to appointments with the Research Associate knowing what they want to do (e.g. Create an SPSS dataset, record a variable, compute a scale score, calculate a t-test, etc,) and the Research Associate will provide assistance with how to use SPSS in doing what they want.

• The MNRI’s Research Associate will not provide guidance or advisement on data collection, analysis, interpretation or presentation of the findings. It is the responsibility of the thesis advisor and/or committee members to provide direction and advice for thesis/practicum work including data collection, analysis and interpretation.

Statistical Consultation

Graduate students have access to statistical consultation services through the MNRI. If grant funds are not available to support the consultation, the MNRI will cover up to a maximum of 5 hours of statistical consultation services through the part-time statistician Mary Cheang. Mary Cheang is available for statistical consultation on Thursdays and appointments must be booked through the MNRI (474-9080).

Consulting the statistician:

• The graduate student should discuss appropriate use of statistical consultation services with her/his thesis advisor before making an appointment with the statistician.

• The graduate student should inform his/her advisor about what has been discussed with the statistician. The advisor should attend the initial meeting with the statistician.

• At the first meeting, the graduate student should come prepared with a brief summary of the thesis topic and a list of questions.

• Although there is no requirement on the point in the thesis at which a graduate student should seek out statistical consultation, likely the best time is at the conceptualization stage once the literature review has been initiated.

• The number of meetings with the statistician that graduate students require will vary. A typical nursing research project requires between 5-10 hours of statistical consultation. The MNRI will cover up to a maximum of 5 hours of statistical consultation for graduate students who do not have grant funding for their research projects.

• The statistician is a consultant. Graduate students are expected to input their data and carry out analysis based on advice and consultation from their advisor, committee members and the statistician.

• The graduate student is asked to keep the MNRI informed of his/her progress in the use of statistical consultation.
