In a year, McDonald·s consumes a minimum of 4.6 crore

buns, 17 lakh bottles of sauce, 1,200 tonnes of iceberglettuce, six crore patties and hundreds of tonnes of dairyproducts and other ingredients & the key challenge is toensure that none of these ingredients runs out of stock inany of the outlets at any point of time.

McDonald·s, through its unique cold chain, has been ableto cut down on its operational wastage as well asmaintain the freshness and nutritional value of raw andprocessed food products.

All supplier partners and distribution centres in the coldchain work cohesively to ensure that the final productreaches customers consistently.

Once McDonald·s has procured all necessary ingredients,how does it store and distribute them to its outlets acrossthe country? H ere comes the role of RadhakrishnaFoodland , which operates distribution centres for all

McDonald·s restaurants in the country. These distributioncentres have focused all their resources to meetexpectation of cold, clean, and on-time delivery and play avery vital role in maintaining the integrity of the productsthroughout the entire cold chain.Ranging from liquid products from Punjab to lettuce fromPune, the distribution centres receive items from differentparts of the country. These items are stored in rooms withdifferent temperature zones and are finally despatched tothe McDonald·s restaurants on the basis of theirrequirements.

The company has both cold and dry storage facilities withcapability to store products up to -22º C as well as deliverytrucks to transport products at temperatures ranging fromroom temperature to frozen state.

RFPL stored the products in controlled conditions inMumbai & New Delhi & supplied them to McDonald¶s outletson a daily basis.

By transporting the semi-finished products at a particular temperature,the cold chain ensured freshness & adequatemoisture content of the food.

Especially for India, McDonald·s also re-engineered its operations to ensure theseparation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food

products throughout the various stages of thecold chain ³ procurement, cooking and serving.So much so that the mayonnaise and the softserve they use here are also 100 per centvegetarian.

The success of McDonalds India was achieved bysourcing all its required products from within thecountry.

Today, McDonalds India works with 38 differentsuppliers on a long term basis and several otherstand alone restaurants for its various otherrequirements.

McDonald's entered its first distributionpartnership agreement with Radha KrishnaF oodland, a part of the Radha Krishna Groupengaged in food-related service businesses. Theassociation goes back to July 1993, when itstudied the nuances of McDonald's operationsand requirements for the Indian market.Cold Chain was one of the unique concepts of McDonalds supply chain in India, on which it had

spent more than six years to get the system intoplace.
