Manilla Central one of seven school’s in Australia to be selected in the Agrifutures program

Below is an article from the Northern Daily Leader.

Forward thinking: Manilla Central’s Chalmonie Fletcher, Meegan Taylor, Justin Connors, Jessica Paull and Rayah Fletcher are paving the way for future farmers.

Manilla Central School could be on the forefront of the agricultural revolution after becoming one of just seven schools selected to take part in a national program.

The Agrifutures Program is a two-term agricultural entrepreneurship program, which will see 32 year nine and ten students developing business ideas, and plans to “solve some of the biggest problems facing Australian farmers.”

Agriculture teacher, Justin Connors, said some of the ideas in the works already were different styles of electric fencing, feed monitoring apps and other tech advances, as well as an idea that involves finding uses for redundant red blood cells after plasma has been removed.

“The program will build on the students’ existing skills and their personal interest in, and connections with, local agriculture,” he said.

“Changes in technology, markets and climate mean the agricultural sector today must be just as innovative as the manufacturing or service sectors.”

The program is an initiative of Liz Jackson’s startup.business,

Primary Library NewsTerm 2 has been a busy term, with many enthusiastic discussions and activities occurring in the Library. The first few weeks of Term 2 saw our students prepare their entries to participate in the Country Women’s Association - Country of Study Competition. This year’s country of study was Papua New Guinea. Kindergarten and both 1/2 classes enjoyed completing the colouring in competition. Year 3/4 prepared a post card based on an imaginary visit to a specific location in Papua New Guinea. They produced some amazing postcards with bright pictures and interesting stories of their trip to Papua New Guinea. 4/5 and 5/6 honed their research and technological skills to create a Power Point presentation about Papua New Guinea. A huge amount of effort went into their presentations and they

should be very proud of their entries. Congratulations to the CWA competition winners: William Woodward, Cohen Zaicos, Parker Freeman, Liam Webb, Charm Hackett, Taya Burns, Emillia Van Reenen, Eavie Rollason, Zari Keighran, Eleanor Fisher, Addison Buffett, Liam Hawley, Bella Scanlon, Jessica Wise, Amber-Lily Gregson, Brooklyn Russell, Shakaya Fenton, Meaghan Hawley and Claire Fisher. For our Personal Development lessons students in Kindergarten through to Year 6 have been learning about Road Safety. We have specifically discussed pedestrian, passenger and rider safety. One of the strategies that students have learnt about is to ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ before crossing the road in a safe place. Students in Kindergarten through to year 4 are also encouraged to always hold an adult’s hand when they cross the road. The primary classes participated in an experiment that supports the purpose of wearing a helmet. They needed to design a foam helmet that could protect a boiled egg from impact. All students enjoyed the lesson and were able to identify the key features that a helmet needs to be effective. Our main focus for bus safety surrounded the need to wait for the bus to leave when they exited the bus. This was to develop an understanding of their reduced visibility to other road users when a bus is present, and to help them identify a safe way they can continue on their journey home once the bus has moved off. Year 3/4 and 5/6 are preparing to submit an individual art entry and written statement for the ‘Threatened Species Children’s Art Competition’. Students have been researching information about a specific threatened species of their choice and learning a variety of art techniques that they can use in their artwork. I’m looking forward to seeing their completed entries early next term.

http://www.threatenedspeciesartcomp.net.au/Term 3 will see students participate in Book Week activities. The book fair and book week parade will be in week 5.The Premier Reading Challenge will also come to a close in late August. Please encourage everyone to continue their amazing effort in reading these texts and to record them online or on the provided sheet (due back at school by Wednesday 28/8/19).

Principal LeaveMr Windred is on leave from Thursday, 27th June until Friday, 5th July. During that time, Mrs Ferguson will be relieving as Principal and Miss Eagles will be relieving as Deputy Principal.
