Manildra Show—
The Manildra show is fast ap-proaching. The students have been working towards com-pletion of their craft entry. Mrs Watts has kindly been as-sisting the students to com-plete the entry—which is a sculpture of whatever the stu-dents decide, however it must

Principal‟s Conference.
Last week I was away for a couple of days. I was part of an organising committee hosting the annual principal's conference—school princi-pal‟s from Lithgow to Broken Hill. There were 120 princi-pals attending the confer-ence and we organised a number of high profile speak-ers. One of the speakers was Janine Shephard. Janine was an elite athlete, chosen to compete as a cross country skier at the Olympics.

During her training she was riding a bicycle from Sydney to the Blue Mountains. During the ride she was struck by a speeding utility and she broke her back and neck. She was in traction in hospital for 6 months and became a partial paraplegic, meaning that she had minimal feeling in her legs and lower body, She went from being an elite ath-lete to being bed and wheel chair bound, and having to learn to walk again. Her story was really inspirational.
She did turn her life around, however she was never able to return to competitive ski-ing—however she did learn to
every night after dinner—she has a little box called the
“Grateful Box” and every family member is given a lit-tle scrap of paper each eve-ning after dinner and they write one thing about their day that they are grateful about. It can be simple, or complex, but everyone in her family writes about one thing. She said that she started this because her fam-ily started to feel down and sad about Janine‟s accident and it affected how they thought about their every day life. She wanted to get past that and to have really positive things to say and think. She said that it trans-formed the way her family reacted to good and bad

fly, became an aerobatic pilot and made it to the disabled Olympics as an equestrian. She did something more amazing though, and had thee children—a feat that the doctors told her she would never achieve.
The reason I write to you about this is that she had a powerful message that we should all live by—the will to achieve and the determina-tion to make it back from a devastating injury. She even wrote a book—which is titled “Never Tell Me Never”. It is a philosophy we should all try and live by. She also told of a ritual that her family practices

Class News
Senior Class
We have been studying all about area, pe-
rimeter, tessellation and symmetry in mathe-
matics. We have had a number of students
complete their multiplications program or
who have moved onto the advanced level—
very impressive.
We have also been putting together a news-
paper—with students acting as reporters. We
have been looking at teeth,, how to keep
them healthy, and what their purpose is.
Junior Class In the infants class we have been very busy work-
ing on our show art. We have been very lucky to
have Mrs Watts in to help us with this and we ap-
preciate all her efforts.
In PD/H/PE ‟Getting along with others‟ we have
been looking at how we communicate with peo-
ple, we use our facial expressions, our tone of
voice etc.
This term we have also been enjoying our „Fruito‟
break. The infants class are allowed to bring in a
piece of fruit and at 10am they can eat their fruit
in class.

learning, and not spend a signifi-cant amount of time of poor stu-dent behaviour. I feel grateful that I have students who are motivated to learn and enjoy the challenge of research and writing. We have a great school and I sure feel grateful for that.
I am thinking of reading this inspi-rational book to the students later this year—other teachers have done so and have found it had a profound effect of the way stu-dents thought about their prob-lems.
things. Janine recognised that the way we think, the attitudes we carry with us, affect how we re-late to others and how we think about every day situations.
I think it is easy to feel that things don‟t go our way, but in truth, compared to many millions of oth-ers, Australians have a fantastic life. I think the “Gratitude Box” has the potential to make us all think more positively.
I myself feel grateful to be princi-pal of a school that has families who care about their kids and their community. I feel grateful that when I arrive at school I can concentrate on teaching and

Get Well Soon.
Both Mr Cox (Will‟s Dad) and Mrs Whiley (Our reading teacher) have been unwell recently. I wish them both a speedy recovery to good health.
I believe that Knox Gibson has returned home after his recent ordeal. We all wish Knox a con-tinued speedy recovery—our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Knox‟s immediate and extended family. We want to give all out sup-port here at Manildra PS to the family—we are all hoping and praying for you all.
District Athletics Carnival
Zhardae competed at the recent District Athlet-ics Carnival in Orange. He was in the discuss and shot put. He competed really well and with great enthusiasm. He was our only representa-tive at this years district athletics carnival as part of the OSSA team. Well done Zhardae!
Head Lice
The dreaded lice seem to have moved on, how-ever it is important to remain vigilant. Could all families please have a check of hair this week-end, just to be sure, and treat any lice that you find. I noted that one of my colleagues across the other side of the state was seeking advice from the collegiate about what to do—maybe they have all moved to his school!
Book Fair News
The book fair was a great success—the library sold over $850 dollars worth of books during the book fair. The school also purchased books for end of year prizes, which helped push up the total amount earned. The school was enti-tled to $170 worth of books because of your help in buying so many books. The library now has a significant number of new books for the students to read.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the book fair, through the purchase of books and for the many donations of books we re-ceived.

Kindergarten Orientation—Term 4
It‟s that time of year again when our new stu-dents-to-be in 2012 will begin their Kindergar-ten orientation. During term 4, children are in-vited to participate in the morning assembly, sport and activities with our Infants children and teacher, as well as recess at 11am and lunch at 1pm.
