AN INTRODUCTION FROMTHE VICE PRESIDENT

This booklet contains the bright ideas of those characterswho wish to stand up and represent you next year. Theseare the students who wish to argue your case with the peo-ple who have the power (such as the University elders) tomake your time in Cardiff better. They will be the Directors,Trustees and Executive members of your Students’ Union.

I encourage all of our students to take a little time to paysome attention to what the candidates are saying aboutyour stay in Cardiff and how they think they can help.Candidates in our elections are always people who havededicated an enormous amount of time to the clubs, soci-eties and activities with which they’ve been involved andthey work incredibly hard over the elections period. Having put myself and my potatoesthrough it all last year, I have the utmost respect for their efforts.

Our elections are a fantastic tool for finding people with some of the key qualitiesrequired of a student representative: leadership, creativity, popularity and communica-tion skills are just a few of these. But what is it that the candidates will use these skillsto achieve? Their ideas and principles, as laid out in this booklet, are the causes thatyour Students’ Union will be fighting for next year and the facilities that next year’sExecutive will hope to provide. I hope you enjoy reading about them and go out to voteon March 19th & 20th.

Hello. My name’sSi and I’m a sec-ond year philoso-

phy student and Quench Magazinefilm editor.

Since I first started at Cardiff inSeptember 2005 I have been a regu-lar contributor to many sections ofGair Rhydd and Quench.

Being film editor is a role thatinvolves keeping in constant contactwith local cinemas and national pro-motion companies so that we canprovide the most up to date reviewsand most interesting interviews.Through doing this I’ve become veryskilled at communicating with vari-ous media companies and havedeveloped relationships that canreally benefit student media.

This year I have been responsible forproviding Gair Rhydd and Quenchwith interviews with the likes of DirtySanchez, Borat (aka Sacha Baron

Cohen) and Cars and Toy Story direc-tor John Lasseter.

Over my time writing for and editingQuench I’ve gained all the skillsvital for the position of editor; agood grasp of the software and tech-niques we use and an understandingof how student media runs best.

Most importantly I have always triedto be a key and effective member ofthe Gair Rhydd and Quench teamand genuinely care about producinga paper and magazine of amazingquality.

As Quench Editorand Deputy editor ofGair Rhydd I want toproduce publica-tions that are truly interesting andexciting to read.

This means encouraging and assist-ing each and every section toachieve its maximum potential, mak-

ing sure we are always chasing thebest interviews, giving you the firstreviews and the most relevant andaccurate news.

In this way we can make our awardwinning student media an absolutelyvital part of student life.

And I want to get more of youinvolved!

I hope to make Gair Rhydd andQuench an accessible and excitingway for students to get writing andjournalism experience.

This means more opportunities forcontributors to get involved andmore support from our editorial teamfor students who want to developand improve their writing skills.

I want student media that is excit-ing, fun and vital, not just to readbut to write for too.

These are therobots of mundane journalism;

HELP ME DESTROY THEM!
